Why no mounts?
? Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
They have some utility but Batdogi alluded to what I don’t miss at all: a bunch of war elephants and woolly mammoths straddled by oversized characters hanging out at the bank entrance and completely obscuring the NPCs and doorways.
Please no mounts. They add nothing of value and will only serve to destroy the believability of the world as people run around on giant turtles, rhinos, crabs, and whatever else ridiculous possibilities they come up with as time goes on. Mounts end up becoming incredibly obnoxious, and they add nothing of value to the game.
If you want mounts that are of any use then go to LoTRO where they developed mounted combat. However you cannot fight while mounted in every region of that game as they had to put in special regions, overly large and open in order to accomodate mounted combat. In other regions the mounts are just for travel purposes.
If you want mounts purely for cosmetic purposes I would rather have them spend their time on other things such housing, game fixes, town clothes, new content before even considering taking the time to develop mounts. As someone stated the sheer amount of development time required so each race fits each mount properly is just not worth the effort when that time could be better used elsewhere. With the amount of development time required they would have to wait for a future expansion and have a team dedicated just for that purpose.
To be honest we have plenty of movement increasing effects and at least one for every class. And I’ve never once ever had an issue getting around without a mount in terms of time and speed getting there.
That and honestly you know everyone would just be sitting around in LA on their mounts. I can forsee increased culling woes just because of this.
My wife and I both play Guardians as our mains. We never have a problem getting around. She uses staff, I pop on staff for traveling. We both throw “Retreat!” on the bar as well. She throws down Symbol for swiftness from staff, I throw down Symbol for swiftness from staff. She pops Retreat, I pop Retreat, rinse repeat. Get where you’re going 3 times faster than anybody else.
I can’t see adding mounts to the game as being an issue, but there would also be no point, and as stated before, it would only take more bandwidth by having to load the graphics. It would take a lot of developer time to design, and program each of these mounts graphics. As well as altering the character’s so they can sit upon them with as little graphic clipping as possible, as stated previously.
Somebody else mentioned the problem of how to obtain them, where to put them, who drops what, which one is worth more…blah blah blah. This of course, goes back to the Riding Broom. It is simply an aesthetic item you can purchase for your character from the Gem Store. So yeah…problem solved right there.
IF they put mounts in the game, and I stress ‘IF’ the dev’s decide to waste their time on this pointless addition to the game, simply design them, give no speed increase, usable only in town clothes to reduce clipping problems, and sell them in the GEM STORE ONLY. Make them worth NO achievement points, and make them non-mountable inside of major cities, to reduce morons from stacking and sitting on vendors.
In the long run, put in the simplest words I can pull from my vocabulary….
~~~~~~~Putting mounts in THIS game is pointless and a waste of time.~~~~~~~
PS. I really want those coconuts now…. XD
OOH OOH! It could be a 2 person mount! With you doing the gallop run, and a friend behind you clacking the coconuts! IT’S FREEKING BRILLIANT!!!
1) If 90 percent of players do not want mounts then why are there so many threads about mounts day after day?
Trolls who can’t take no for an answer. And they are being fed here again.
This game will never have mounts for two reasons.
- Mounts would interfere with “dodging”; which is a core functionality in the gameplay.
- Mounts would trivialize speed buffs, which in turn would make dozens of skills, including weapon bars, irrelevant.
So help me, if somebody who wants mounts in the game suggests an addition action bar upon mounting, for mounted combat…I hope your brakes fail….nah…too harsh. I hope you slip in the shower.
I want to see 2h axes in the friggin game before I see mounts (excluding broom), but that’s never going to happen.
If I want to ride mounts, I’ll go back to WoW. So, I don’t want them.
What? I do not understand you people AT ALL What in the sweet heysus jumbalia snacking puck does that have to do with anything at all?
If mount is to be implemented, most probably it will be as a toy for cosmetic appeal & offer no stats advantage, just like a broom. Hey, if folks want to spend gems for vanity sake, let them. Anet will have additional revenue to speed up development & we get content faster, win-win.
As a dedicated troll, I will run alongside one with mount and say “Wow, you spend X amount of gems on something that move at same speed as those who do not own one?”
If anything Arenanet will sell mounts via the gems in order to pay for server costs and such. I’ve seen of a game where mounts were trappable and man did everyone want them! It would be an alternate way of gaining revenue for the company, and a luxery for those who want these types of things.
Yes some buddies and I have a feeling that mounts are coming and i personally would scream with joy i would love mounts! Also why would some people not want to ride a mount and navigate maybe a bit faster ikittenone instead of using tons of coin i mean whats wrong with mounts lol?!?
I think it’s more of a design aspect. If you look at the land and design of the world, you could tell that it’s not meant for fast, highly mobile mounts. At most, you’d see mounts that go no faster than a player with swiftness on because the maps are smaller, and the land is more dense with objects compared to MMOs that do use mounts. If it comes, then it comes. If it doesn’t, I don’t really mind lol.
Ya if they do come though i hope they aren’t gem store exclusives that would be a sad day for many lol. I think the thought of a really super rare mount type like a pre cursor dropping is just awsome for many but who knows only time will tell!
I really have to wonder, why do people start playing a game that is different from all the others out there, then try to turn it in to “the other game” that they like to play so much? If you like the other game so much, go play that and leave us alone. GW2 has been perverted enough by players trying to turn it in to another clone, enough is enough. Go away.
I completely agree.
It is like the whole “player housing” movement. Why do people want that in this game? They already have it in other games, we don’t need it here.
I don’t even know what to say to this logic….just…….wow.
So you want other peoples screen to get clogged up by dolyak? Or even other “mounts”? My computer can perfectly handle dragon events but think of the lag and cloggage everyone will be causing….
Please no. And please use the search function.
I’m usually typing on my phone
RP and aesthetically-wise, mounts could work. Though, I think we wouldn’t have any horses. After all, I have yet to see a horse in this game. I do see the occasional bull and random cattle around these parts, but if we were to get a mount, it would be something moderately B-A, like a Charr Tank; or something bulky, like a Dolyak. Obviously, they’re a bit more overkill than your standard horse.
Gameplay-wise, we have Asuran technology. You wanna know why we have no mounts? Go blame the Asura.
I am Fleeting Flash, in-game dungeon cosplayer of Reddit Refugees [RR] .
Because this is not World of Warcraft.
There is zero need for mounts. The game is designed around going on foot. Thats why things like the broomstick have zero effect on movement speed.
Like others have said: mounts make no sense at all in this game. I really hope they aren’t added. It just becomes an eye sore because they take up so much screen space.
I would like a mount. one of the huge things about this game that disappointing me. They should make it available for those that want one, if you dont want one you dont have to have one, simple as that.
No, “you” want mounts.
Many players have no interest in them. They would serve no useful purpose in GW2 and would only increase server load and lag.
Please search the forums as this has been posted at least once a week for the past 6 months and another thread is really not needed.
Mounts in GW2 is a particularly interesting topic because its similar to Transmog in World of Warcraft. The Transmog feature allows you to change the appearance of your gear without changing the stats. You see it took years of forum posts to get this system in game. The devs mocked it and players like the one i quoted or others here said they didn’t want it for X reason. But today it is in game and everyone uses it.
I believe mounts in GW2 is on the same boat.
A feature that the devs refuse to put in
A feature that lots of players say they don’t want for X reason
A feature that if it were available everyone would use and dare i say…enjoy.
I for one would like ground mounts in game. But they have to go in with both feet with race specific mounts, fully customizable(appearance wise), and a unique control system (similar to Lotro or similar to some traveling powers in Champions online).
ikr theres sword hammer bow greatsword centaur castle trees and all those stuff in other games so we dont need them here!
Anyone here who played SWTOR may remember how rediculas is looked seeing people in hover cars driving around a space station. Its like seeing someone in a car in a mall.
Anyways there is at least 30 things this game needs to do before they are to add something that every mindless WoW clone MMO has.
The design of waypoints is so mounts are not needed no doubt because the first game had a similar system that worked just fine.
If they added mounts that work just like WoW at that point there moving backwards instead of forward, and I say WoW because lets face it. It’s the WoW people that are requesting this.
The damand for mounts is not much different then the damand to add the holy trinity into GW2. It’s a small handful of people that just can’t move on to new things.
Console games are completely different from what was available 5-7 year previously. They evolve in both the idea’s used in them and how the game is played.
Yet PC games barely change and MMO’s haven’t change really in 10 years. There is a reason why most retailers barely even have PC games from sale, and most PC games now are some form of free to play model. Move on people your killing this genre.
I’ve changed my mind, I do want mounts.
I need player housing first so that I can mount the heads of all my vanquished. Can’t have a mount if you have no wall to mount it on.
I’d be fine with mounts as long as the majority of waypoints are removed.
One per map and that’s about it. Mount would need at leasy 60% speed buff tho.
And after that you will want mounts to give you a significant advantage for the cost of the mount. Then you will complain that mounts cost too much. Then you will complain about the sound from the mount used for grieving. The list goes on…
^ See. Ruin the game for everyone else.
Hmm. Well, I wouldn’t object to the kinds of mounts that are basically just riding brooms with different models. Especially if they’re the kind you’d have to licence from Hasbro, just to see how much people really want them.
That aside, there’s the annoying issue of actually animating them, and that includes adding animations to player characters if you don’t want it to look terrible. So even if, from a gameplay perspective, it behaves like a riding broom (albeit one that collides with many many more obstacles, have fun!), it’s still going to be a lot more work. For that reason I’d hope it’s not much of a priority.
And then, once we have them, people will say “but my mount should let me go faster!” And I will say “if my norn can’t outrun an asura, why should you?”
Why are mounts an absolute NO?
They add something to the world… I miss galloping around on my horse in other RPGs..yet.. gw2 is my favorite game. I wish I could do it here.
the maps are not actually that large. make a thief, ranger, engineer or warrior and you will see that they really are not as big as you think.
no need for mounts.
Gw2 has the best terrain design of any game I have ever seen- it is also not conducive to mounts.
There is no need for mounts and mounts will take up resources that could be better used elsewhere.
Also with culling the way it is now in PvE what do you think would happen? Enjoy playing by yourself on your mount because that is all you will ever see.
Seriously we are having this discussion again?
Btw I would pay any amount of money for coconuts with a galloping emote and sound effects- now that would be awesome!
Far superior to mounts would be pairs of coconuts, complete with sound effects.
I’d buy gems just to get me some coconuts. And holy hand grenades. For RPing. Totally.
I’d like more mounts that are just cosmetic (similar to the Riding Broom), but before that I’d rather have everything else fixed; especially culling in PvE, in big events I mostly run around spamming my 600 range cone auto-attack in the hopes of hitting something.
8/9 Professions, Asura Guardian main.
Not another mount topic. As I’ve said so many times before, I don’t want someone shove a dolyaks behind on my asura’s face while accessing a merchant. And no, limiting to towns wont work, there are merchants elsewhere. And no, merchant screen doesn’t take up entire screen (it’s more like 1/4th)
People who can’t tend to call the opponent troll, scream something utterly incomprehensible
and finally result to personal insults.
I honestly would be fine with mounts. Just give them a 50% swiftness, but they can’t be used in wvw or dungeons.
This is why we can’t even have cosmetic mounts. That would just make people demand speedbuff for the mounts, using argumetns like “I’m riding a horse but that thief can still jog faster than me? Seriously?”
i would rather devs use their times on capes instead of stupid horses in a world were you can teleport, fly, or just equip a speed signet
I think mounts would have an odd effect on WvW. So much of the game is about swiftness boosts and getting to areas of the map fast. If we have mounts that boost speed on top of our regular speed boosts it would just be too fast. Are you thinking they would run at regular speeds determined by the player without any boost? My mesmer is so slow any horse I’m sitting on would look like a stumbling, arthritic turtle at that pace.
Far superior to mounts would be pairs of coconuts, complete with sound effects.
Ah heck. We already have the killer bunny, and GW1 had a black beast.
Oh boy…this thread again >.> Seems like at least once a month this pops up, wouldn’t be surprised if the people that keep posting this know each other or are alternate accounts. Enough already….we don’t need mounts, they aren’t going to make mounts. There is absolutely zero need for them other than being yet another thing to clutter inventory, use up server space, and become yet another ego-measuring contest. No. just no.
~Surrender fiend and you will get an easy death
~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…
+1 for coconuts. Also, if there absolutely would have to be mounts, make them only capable of walking (or trotting). Blam, speed issue solved.
It’s not so much the speed boost issue. It’s that mounts don’t have anything to do in GW. At best, if they ever introduce mounts, it would be something like the broom : a town cloth item that disappears when you are hit (because town clothes in the gem shop rarely have anything to do in GW).
Well, the Stone Summit did ride Dolyaks and Snow Beasts… Both which are quite big. However, it would be a bit silly to ride them but not in combat, so your point stands.
Why can’t the two factions on this compromise. Its not like you can stop it anyway, since we have the first mount in the game already, and nobody made a fuss over the broom getting into the game. It came and the Nay Sayers said nothing.
I have made suggestion after suggestion on how to do a traditional mount system. I have conceded to areas that the people who don’t want to use them could have what they do not want to see in the mount system affect them.
like this:
Fred and I have debated over this topic in other threads, as he is making the point that he made in that other thread, before I can remake my point to it in his current post. I told him before that the F button still works no matter what and that yes the screen will pop up in your face so a animal butt makes no difference. He suggested I go get another monitor since my screen is so small that his screen is so huge that the monitor is only blocked with 1/4 the merchant access screen. After which I then suggested a compromise that all people who have mounts no matter where in the game if they go within the range of a NPC that the range that they will dismount would be the distance that the game has already set up for the on screen visual “press f button to interact” would dismount them if they go into that area and stand still for more than 2 seconds. He told me that it would break the game and a lag fest would ensue. I told him I don’t see how that’s even a possibility since the game is already doing millions of hit detections every second already mounted or not and there is no lag fest from it. I don’t think we got to finish that before that thread got shut down.
I feel strongly about my wanting mounts of all types cosmetic, combat, or speed buffed. Nay saying is not gonna change my mind, but I am willing to work out a compromise. If only some of the ones on the other side of the fence would give into that, we might could get something we could all love to have.
Wow you seem to be using lore baseline argument, then say its ok for anything that comes from the gem shop. Seems to me that anything that breaks lore from the gem shop would upset people, but it doesn’t, that stuff gets added all the time and nothing is said in opposition from it.
i would rather devs use their times on capes instead of stupid horses in a world were you can teleport, fly, or just equip a speed signet
The thing is Anet divides up the development into many areas of the game. They don’t come in on Monday and the entire staff works on culling, for example its spread out.
I don’t remember them saying we was getting capes or that they was working on them. If you could message me a link to that so I can read it too, ty.
No matter which side of the coin you are on, your opinion does not = fact.
For every 10 people that don’t want mounts, 10 do. To me, it seems the pro-mount folks try more to speak opinion, and the anti-mount folks seem to think theirs is fact.
sorry, no they didn’t, but since we talk of a feature that isn’t there why not capes? they were nice in gw1.
the only think about capes i know i read it in a review long time ago that said they wanted to add them, but they glitched with everything so they didn’t.
I have never played a game with mounts (got bored of WoW in a few hours of playing so I bet it does not count), so enlighten me, please, how exactly would that work in GW2?
Will you have to get off your mount before engaging a battle?
Will your mount help you out in the fight, like a pet? What happens if it does not survive?
What happens during a DE? Will there be stables for your mount to keep them during the fight?
Should you die, in lack of wps will you have to run (or ride) back from the nearest town to the spot the DE is taking place?
Will you have to get off your mount whilst collecting crafting material?
Seriously, can anyone answer these questions, please?
I don’t want mounts to be implemented in GW2, because we don’t need them at all.
