Both are decent, however I dont find Celts in any relation with Sylvari (I usualy love Celtic names), but considering the fact that the names are unique, they mean something and are pleasant to speak out. I give you 8/10
My newborn Sylvari mesmer is named Silva Aeternalis – as someone before mentioned “Sylvari usually have 2 vowels consecutively in some part of their name”, I followed the rule at least in the lastname. The meaning is as follows, Silva: growth, forest, wood
and Aeternalis: eternal, everlasting.
So the combined meaning is something like “Growth Eternal”/“Everlasting Growth”
Silva Aeternalis – 7/10. Good that it’s rich in meaning but the surname is tricky to pronounce at first glance, which means it’s a tough one to remember.
My Sylvari’s name is Weatherteller. I didn’t know anything about the lore when I named him, but as he’s a plant, I used an old folk name for dandelions. Supposedly, blowing the seeds would tell you what the weather was going to be like.
7/10 rolls off the tongue well and has a nature theme to it =P
I went with Castiel Kyros for my mesmer to keep with the 2 consecutive vowel rule and Castiel is an angle’s name which I figured would be fitting for a sylvari since their existence seems to be to be to watch over Tyria and protect it from the elder dragons corruption.
Level 80 Sylvari Mesmer – Castiel Kyros (Main)
Level 80 Sylvari Ranger – Castiel Gaanmyr (Alt)
urs is 8/10, will u rate mine please?

Clean and simple. I don’t know where you got it from, but it seems fitting.
Siofra
Sylvari Engineer (female)
From wikipedia:
Síofra (pronounced “shee-fra”) is a feminine given name originating from Ireland. In Irish, síofra literally means “changeling” a changeling is when a fairy swaps its new born fairy child with a newborn human child. (though “peaceful” and “mischievous” are other translations).
Seemed fitting with the Sylvari theme.
9/10 for Siofra. Only loses a point because non-phonetic pronunciations make me cranky. I wish everyone could agree to just use this alphabet to do the same things.
Uh… anyway. I have two Sylvari. I named them both after a weekend Trigun binge left my mind full of “[Name] the [Title]” type configurations. And all the Arthurian elements winding through the Sylvari presentation put me in mind of the Quest for the Holy Grail, so both of them have titles drawn from plants heavily steeped in Crusade-era Christian tradition.
First is Celene the Amaranth, who is a Guardian. Her first name is Greek, but a spelling seen more typically in England and Wales. It means “the moon”. She’s a shout-out to a friend’s old tabletop character, the noble fae bodyguard (and eventually spouse) of the wizard I based my Elementalist on. Amaranth is a flower with red/pink blossoms. Its name means “Unfading”, and it has been associated with Immortality and was sacred to Artemis (who was a goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals and the moon). It has also been described as having healing properties bordering on the supernatural. Early Christians appropriated much of the symbolism of the Greeks, and used the flower as a token of the Resurrection of Jesus. Honestly though, I picked it mainly because the color matched the original tabletop character’s hair.
Second is Cadfael the Dogwood, who is a Thief. I’ve seen translations of the name that mean “Beloved”, but others that mean “Battle Prince”. Cadfael is an extremely minor character in certain versions of King Arthur’s legend. Cadfael is also the name of a character from a TV show that ran in England for 17 years about a Benedictine Monk in the 12th Century who solves mysteries. My concept for him was of a Sylvari with no Wyld Hunt to focus him, who very nearly fell to the Nightmare Court before re-dedicating himself to Ventari’s teachings… and now he solves mysteries. Dogwood is a tree that is traditionally believed in certain Christian denominations to have supplied the wood for the Cross. Botanists generally dismiss this claim, as there weren’t really any Dogwoods in Jerusalem at the time, and those that were nearby (like, same continent) weren’t big enough… but, you know, Tradition. The flowers and fruit are used as symbols in many churches. I wanted to use the alleged wood of the Cross as a symbol of a character who is not necessarily proud of his past, despite his current heroic trajectory.

9/10. The dogwood is awesome
Say hello to Cyberdwarf Babyarm, the elementalist.

So you want everyone to use only english pronounciations and spellings for your ease?? Is this an english-only game? What about all those non english natives wanting to use their own language as inspiration for names? Or all us multi linguists wanting to get our inspiration from anywhere we can? Síofra maybe non-english-phonetic but its probably quite normal irish-phonetic.

Yeeesh lil harsh much? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so whether or not we all believe its correct/incorrect doesn’t matter. Not defending that persons opinion just sayin its a “Rate this name” thread and that person provided their reason for the rating they gave, a rather high one I might add since its a near perfect rating, just try to not let it bother you. If you are willing to post your name and have someone rate it you must be open to criticism. Let’s not turn this into a flame war thread please? Let’s keep it civil. Ok end rant =P have a good day everyone and lets get some more names rated xD
Next one to be rated is Cyberdwarf Babyarm so who ever posts their name next please rate LordSlack’s sylvari name in your post

Cyberdwarf Babyarm? Emmm, 2/10, sorry, it just doesn’t sound at all.
My elementalist is named Floriee.
Floriee is cute and fit to sylvari, but i dont like double letters. 9/10.
Mine:
mesmer – Liathra de Vries.
warrior – Alaia of Askalda.
7/10 names are creative.
Now i dont have a sylvari but my brothers mesmer is named Frogless
Frogless 4/10
Doesn’t really fit a sylvari.
Guy above me said nothing, so… J Tolkien. Jrr Tolkien was taken and so were all the ent names

9/10 follows naming conventions, rolls off the tongue
mine’s an engineer and her bombs keep blowing up on her. The asura krewe she works with gave her a fitting nickname.
Zohra Sootblossom

If the backstory behind the name really was that it was a nickname given by the technology driven Asura then it isn’t an appropriate Sylvari name because it originated from a race known to be based on artifice instead of nature.
The name also would therefore have come from a source other than the Pale Tree who is the one that is supposed to assign names to Sylvari. Adopting the name given to you by the Asura and thereby refusing the name given to you by the Pale Tree is an unforgiveable complete rejection of your Sylvari heritage making this name supremely unSylvari and thus utterly inappropriate for a Sylvari to have.
I also think Engineer is an inappropriate class for Sylvari so a point was deducted for that as well.
While Zohra by itself is cute and utterly inoffensive, it is also rather generic and doesn’t really suggest anything particularly Sylvarian because it could just as easily be associated with a Human, Norn, Charr or Asura.
Tympana (A femininzed version of Tympanum. According to Wikipedia Cybele was usually shown in Rome as Meter (“Mother”, or in Latin Magna Mater, “Great Mother”) with the tympanum balanced on her left arm).
(edited by Ellisande.5218)
Tympana sounds really nice… I am rather curious to know what class she is.
I named my female necromancer Tuiren Liadan. (Liadan is NOT a last name ; I know sylvaris don’t have families.)
Both are celtic names ; Liadan means ‘the grey lady’, which fits her necromancer persona and her overall physical appearance rather well, I think.

The sylvari are born with experiences they shared via the dream. If the Dream chose to gift mine with the experiences of alchemy and creating technology, how is the engineer inappropriate for a sylvari? also Zohra is the name given to my character by the Pale Tree. “Sootblossom” is the nickname. If the sylvari believes in “where life, goes so should you” why are you deducting points because your view of the sylvari is so limited? If anything, your views are inappropriate for sylvari.
I won’t fear difficulty though. Hard ground makes strong roots.
Harsh comments up there … I’ll give you a 7/10 because I like the Zohra name, and your explanation. Ignore that guy.
My Sylvari’s name is Hydroponic Bud (hydroponics as in the water growing method, bud as in marijuana, duh)
Lol. Underwater weed…man, that’s the stuff. 10/10
Created a new Sylvari Necromancer…Skullman Graves. Ugh, i cringe every time i look at it.
7/10 I like it.
My sylvari mesmer is named Perchance to Dream.
7/10 sounds neat
My sylvari engineer is Petal To The Metal
Yeh!!!
9/10 – i love puns
Mine is an elementalist named Darth Deciduous
9/10. Love the Star Wars reference and “Deciduous” – very plant related. (also, i love your forum name.)
I made a Sylvari the other day, but deleted it due to it’s theme, which wasn’t as good in practice as it was in my head. x_x But her name was Keises, which was taken from “Keisetsu”, a type of azalea.
9.5/10 – Double vowel names are awesome, the fact that its a typ eof flower is just bonus points! =P
My Sylvari’s name is:
Saelvia – Mesmer
Its a play on Salvia divinorum, a hallucinogenic plant…
Famous thanks to Miley Cyrus and her mess of a life.
8/10
My two sylvari names are: Arikyali, and Ademisifi. They have no connections to plants whatsoever. I just made them up. ^^
8/10. No environment is more appropriate for using a made-up name than a made-up world! Plus I just like the way they look.
“Schizandra” is a medicinal berry; I thought it was suitable name for a plant character. PLUS, my real name is hidden in there somewhere; just won’t say where. Unfortunately someone had already taken that character name. So, I settled for just having it as my nickname, and named my 4 Sylvari like so:
Schizandria (Elementalist)
Schizandrie (Thief)
Schizandrai (Mesmer)
Schizandrei (Ranger)
7/10 – I like the original name, but I have a little bugbear about people giving all their alts the same names one letter different and such. Just seems to suggest you couldnt be bothered to create each toon with their own personality. Also, just a question – why on earth have all sylvari? Lovely race, but wouldn’t you want to try others? I adore having one of each!
My scantily clad Ele’s name is unfortunately simplistic, but then, the toon was made only a few days after the game came out before people decided plant names were cliché.
It’s ‘Oakenseed’.
I’m considering rolling a male sylvari warrior now… finding a powerful, macho name for a twig could be a challenge!
I guess it all depends on the player’s relationship to their characters. My alts are not REALLY different characters in my mind; instead, I think of them all as different versions of me. Which is why I chose a name that includes my actual IRL name. I would have named them all Schizandra if I could have.
I did try the Charr and Asura, but found that I couldn’t relate to them enough. Their aesthetics, while interesting, didn’t make me feel like I was playing as myself. Obviously I don’t look like a tree IRL, but the Sylvari convey the essence of me perfectly. Kind of a shame because I rolled other races in order to experience their storylines.
I really like your name, but I’ll leave it to someone else to rate bc I’ve run out of names to continue the thread. As for a masculine, powerful Sylvari name… how about MANdrake? :P
Oakenseed is a 7/10. It’s a cool name.
Sylvari names are Gaelic, so I named my first Sylvari “Aoife”, which means “Beautiful, radiant”.
Nice, solid 8/10. My name is Jihaii…(female)
7/10 nice name
my female ranger name is Nyrue
8/10 simple and elegant
My mesmer’s name is Amouri Clovespiel, amour denotes love.

7/10. Punny, but not too awe-inspiring or fantasy inspired.
Mine is Drezemma.

My Mesmer is named Tremula which is a species of Populus (Aspen Tree).
9/10 matching name for tree-people.
Mine is Dr Vegan. With his pig pet, Baconwagon.
8/10 because of the sidekick of Baconwagon. I got a laugh out of that.
As for names, I’m proud of my Thief’s: Ghille Dhu. He’s named after a Scottish fairy that protects trees and wears vegetation for clothing.
And there’s my mesmer/coutier Linncale.
9/10 for both names. I like that the first one has ties to nature and such.
Mine is a female ranger named Athol Brose. Named after a liqueur made in Scottland
Scottish liqueur? So its alcoholized. That can never be bad. But for a female?
Man you must be…I just like it = 9/10
Male mesmer called = Dudikoff Skorbut
I’ll go 7/10 cuz you got a legit ‘wtf lol’ outta me.
Mesmer named Spirit And The Wind

Hmmm I gotta say 6/10. Mostly becuase I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to names, and that name doesn’t fit the lore (and it sounds like a Ranger name to me lol). Looks more like an awesome Kodan name to me instead
My Sylvari Mesmer is named Aegrahm and my Guardian is Baelfynn (wanted something that sounded psuedo-Gaelic for the both of them)

9/10, I always liked Gaelic sounding names and yours sound different yet similar, as if they were related.
My wife had a saying when growing up to describe nice or kind people. I thought it sounded appropriate so I named my one Sylvari Mesmer using her saying.
Good Bean.
