4 months ago I posted a list of requests for updates to Tequatl. I wonder how many will come to pass? Previous list of requests to follow:

Edited to add: This is a great place to throw out your ideas of what you’d like to see any of them do encounter wise to make them more exciting.

An Epic Boss needs to be just that… Epic.

Maybe it is time to go back to the basics. Where a Dragon was something to be feared not farmed.

My experience comes from an oldschool paper & pencil RPG which I started playing back in the mid-seventies. When my players came across a Dragon they knew this could very well be, the end of their character.

To put in perspective I will use Tequatl in my vision and I am assuming that Tequatl is a he for simplicity sake.

  • Claw attack – grab a talon full of people and toss them back beyond the mega-laser. Maybe the crush on being picked up by his talon doesn’t kill ya but the impact when you hit the ground might.
  • Bite – Bite may be survivable, Chew less so, but Swallow, not so much. Plus the dead players with their armor digested sliding out the gaping hole in his chest… well that may be a little much.
  • Wing Buffet – used to smack people around on his sides.
  • Tail Slap – for those that think they could sneak up on him.
  • Launch – when he takes off the blast of wind knocks down anyone in a 45 degree arc in front.
  • Land – you better not be there when he comes down, the smush is always fatal!
  • Breath Weapon – take the classic 45 degree cone while sitting on the ground and now shake his head from side to side spewing all the way. Let’s not forget the Breath Strafing from above.
  • Crush – a few hundred tons of rotting flesh are lethal if he decides to bend at the knee and you are underneath him.
  • Aura – if you are 5 levels below him you just run away in fear before you can get even in his visual range.
  • Condition – I like the dripping poison beneath him, that one works fine.
  • Minios – Bloated creepers work nicely, they have caught me snoozing a few times.
  • And last but not least: somewhere out in the ocean, beyond where the currents push us back, lies his lair. And in that treasure filled lair of his, resides lots of magic items. How about you let him use some of those magic trophies when he comes to visit that give him some sort of a boon? And one step further, maybe he is just smart enough not to bring the same booster item each time he arrives.

On a personal note: That poor watchtower gets wiped out every time he crashes our party. Let’s get some engineers up there and get that thing structurally shored up. Maybe put a few Ballista and some Arrowcarts up on that tower’s parapet to make Teq think twice next time there is “Something in the Water”

Now I did view the teaser (which was awesome) and surely that is just the tip of the iceberg on what changes they made so:

  • Before the release – Is there anything else you would like to see them change?
  • Then after the release – Did it meet your expectations?

i’ll try a prophecy instead:
it will be hard and long, the waypoint will be contested so if you die you better have friends willing to ress, the poison will make it impossible to come near, the adds will be champion kraits swarming the cannon and we will fail this event a lot before we manage to complete all the achievement attached to it (unless of course you are on a smart server with smart players). after a while sparkfly fen will be desolated as orr and southsun. and everybody will go kill the shatterer untill he will get buffed too.
i really hope though this will not happen and even if the fight is hard people will still want to kill him

Tequatl’s dragon chest doesn’t have a daily limit. You can farm it all day, every day.

After experiencing the “New Tequatl” here are the results that I have found. Mind you after 6 attempts we have not taken him below 75% so I have no idea if any of these things come up further in the battle.
Claw attack – No
Bite – No
Wing Buffet – No
Tail Slap – Yes
Launch – Kinda, I guess the tidal wave falls into this catagory
Land – No
Breath Weapon – Now a 10 second fear that I have yet to hear a warning for before it triggers
Crush – No
Aura – Not that I noticed
Condition – Poison from Fingers now too
Minions – More Bloated Creepers, Krait and Risen it seems
And last but not least – Not that I could tell

Did it meet my expectations? Allow me to preface this by saying:

  • I have not played any other online games besides GW1 but I played the heck out of that.
  • I had no preconceived clue of what a “Raid event” was

With that in mind…

I can honestly say I was completely stunned on this update.

  1. I did not complete the World event. Wh Wh What? Don’t think that has ever happened before and I have done a few thousand of them.
  2. I died. I am an Exotic/Ascended L80…I don’t die! Well, it seems that now… I do. Don’t take this to be a bad thing, I was getting too full of myself anyway.
  3. 6 attempts, 1 1/2hr invested, zero rewards. Hmmm, I know this is a contested issue “Why should you get rewarded for failure?” but hey even that crazy Scarlet gave me “something” for a valiant effort.
  4. Overflow each time. (Don’t you people have homes?-Judge Smails) I guess this was to be expected but I tried to go to Sparkfly 30 minutes before Teq landed and was in overflow the entire time waiting for his arrival, through the entire battle until 10 minutes after the event failed. Surely this will go away as time goes on but if the people get discouraged and go with it. Tequatl wins, Tyria falls under Elder control, the people are doomed.

So I have since spoken to a bunch of people who played other games with “Raid” content and found out that it is mostly for Elite specifically coordinated groups. If this was the intention then it looks like, mission accomplished.

I reflect back when my level 62 Staff Ele first stumbled into the Tequatl event:

  • Dragon cool, let me help.
  • Big clawed foot…you are mine
  • 5 minutes later, ooooo shiney
  • Moving on

I reflect back to 2 days ago when my Level 80 Full Exotic/Ascended Staff Ele ran headlong into the Tequatl event:

  • Dragon cool, let me help.
  • Big clawed foot…you arrr, ooop I’m dead
  • Waypoint and run back, hit by wave, knocked into poison, eaten by mob, ooop I’m dead
  • Waypoint and run back, attack, jump, knocked down, remove poison, heal, attack, resurrect, dodge, summon Hounds, knocked down, remove poison, attack, jump, run away, run back, resurrect, heal, knocked down, attack…
  • 13 minutes later, crap no shiney
  • Moving on

So did the update meet my expectations? Yes and No.

  • No, I expected more of the dragon attack mechanics I had hopefully laid-out above.
  • Yes, Remember back in the beginning when I said “A Dragon was something to be feared not farmed”?

Be afraid…be Very afraid!
