Who gave up on the reptile already?
From an interview with ANet:
Q: Tequatl update is nice but it destroys your party, home server due to overcrowded home servers and overflows
A: We are aware of it and actively discussing it.We were hoping originally it would take days/weeks for players to defeat Tequatl instead of 12 hrs.
http://dulfy.net/.../26/gw2-eurogamer-expo-livestream-notes/Good Lord. They were expecting people to fail for WEEKS! And still be doing this in the hundreds, every 90 minutes. Is this a sound judgement of player behavior? Especially since this game was supposed to be casual friendly.
What?!!! Weeks Anet, you are expecting your players to do one boss fight 1000 times just to finish it? With that 0,001% or something like it chance to get some good stuff.
Challenging content does NOT have to mean weeks of participation to succeed. There are much better ways. You dont know how to do them.
Well maybe it would not be that bad if you would succceed in it. Becouse after 2 weeks of attempting to kill him without any sign of victory 90% of players would just give it up (like lot of players do it now anyway) and when that rest would party up and finaly kill it and get only this garbage he drops , yes GARBAGE, no one would argue about your incompetence to lead big game like GW2.
The only thing I can think of in light of them saying they were hoping it would take days to weeks for the first kill, is that this update was not for your average player. I think they expected the vast majority to give up and this content would only be done by the dedicated elite large guilds. There is no way the average player would fail numerous times and still want to do this. Especially not in the numbers required to make it work. If it’s every 90 minutes, 24 hours a day and requires a minimum of 80 people, that’s 1280 character attempts in each server per day to even have a chance of success. Since this is unlikely, they must have expected most Tequatl events to be deserted after the initial rush is over.
They basically made an open world raid, and from what I’ve read about other games that have raids, most people don’t do them. It’s only a small proportion of the population that does raids.

AFK people might also be a problem but that is a problem common to all events along with the inability to scale back down. It is just more noticeable here.
In over a year playing GW2, I have not seen any event other than this one where people AFK were a problem.
Ahhhh—you forget about Dragon Ball.
Got my achievements. Tequatl won’t see me any time soon.

That was my first impression too. If they plan on making all the bosses similar to teq, it will make only a very small portion of the player base happy. Challenge is a nice thing to add to the world, BUT they have to tone down the severity if they want to keep the casual friendly stamp they seem to want to endorse. They don’t seem to realize that their vision of “players banding together” is not what actually happens when everyone on the map has their own agenda. Add into the mix the overflows and bad % chance at good loot and you are just asking for your players to give up after they get the title (and some like myself even before).
I am rather more puzzled by them having put in a boss they thought it was that much difficult and thinking the rewards were fine for the effort required.
The main thing that’s going to keep me from coming back is all the waiting around. Both times I’ve tried with [TSS] have been successful and fun.. except for the waiting around for him to spawn. Last night it was over an hour.
He really needs specific spawn times.

I can understand why they were hoping that. This is often true of real raids in other games. BUT! Those are coordinated groups of friends that keep coming back over and over to try again again. I don’t mind wiping in raids whilst figuring out strategy with a group of friends as I know, trust them and will have fun with them. But a group of 80+ strangers? Some who might be afk? Waiting around for an unknown spawn time? Hours between tries?
No thank you.
You want people to take days/weeks to beat hard content ANet? Make proper, instanced raids then. :P

And even in those raids people are not doing weeks one boss. But whole raid full of bosses. And they are well rewarded for completing every boss.
But this is one boss with bunch of strangers awarding us with common items and VERY small chance of something good.
Bad design indeed.
…
So they designed it with the INTEND , that it wouldnt be beaten in a weeks or 2 weeks time.
I mean…. its hard for any normal ppl.
I beat it several times now with TKS/TSS/THS and I was there at the 7:42 run…………… , and it always takes a lot of preparation time as in already filling the map before it appears just to kill it 1 1/2 hours later when it appears again.
With that amount of organization its not that hard.
Normal Servers usually still dont make it in time.
And yet it drops Greens and Blues…..
_____________________________________________________________
So, here i doubt the developers sanity and let me explain why:
Imagine it really would have taken 2 weeks to do it, for even organized groups.
And Imagine the first groups would have only gotten Greens and Blues AFTER 2 WEEKS TRYING AND GETTING NOTHING.
If i was in such a group, you know what i would do?
I would close the game, press the uninstall button, and never install it again, and in the future I would boycott everything from that developer till all eternity.
Srsly the reward for its current version is already a slap in the face, and I’m NOT saying its too hard,
==> the difficulty is just fine !!!!!!!!!!!!. <===
Sorry but if it really was intended to be not beaten for 2 weeks, with that loot its like the developers slap us in the face and cry dont play our game. dont buy our products.

Translation: “We know about it and are talking, but haven’t got a clue how to fix it. We expected people to put up with the overflow issues for days or weeks because they wanted to beat the encounter that much.”
Haven’t got all achievements for it (got about 3) but can’t be bothered anymore. I’m even doing anything but for daily ‘Here Be Dragons’.

True, but anet would have been even more aware of the problems that afk’rs create because of the complaints they received, which suggest to me they ignored the problem, they don’t know how to fix it, or it would take time to fix it and don’t want to commit resources.
I’ve given up on it for the time being. I’ve got enough for Boss Week, and that’s it for me.
Not because its too hard. I’ve done it around 5 times, failed it every single time, and that’s fine with me. I would have liked to get a little more for the attempt at least, since I’ve only actually gotten loot once, every other fail has been above 75% so nothing at all and that sucks, but whatever. Its hard, requires coordination, fine with me. Eventually I’ll end up in a group who can pull it off, right?
Last night I finally got into TC main server for the first time. Wasn’t super organized as I thought it would be (there was no TS or anything far as I can tell, and only one commander really trying to get people to the right spots) but still better than the overflows I’d been into previously by a mile. There was a concentrated zerg with ice bows / greatswords, decent defense forces on the turrets, a finger team, ect, as opposed to the usual “everyone stands around and then flings themselves wantonly at Teq when he spawns” of Overflow. And honestly, even if it failed which it might have (apparently the two attempts previous did) I was still just happy to finally be in the TC main server and be part of at least a somewhat organized attempt.
Got in right after the previous fail, so waited around for an hour and a half just to get a chance at Teq in TC main. Super excited, going to be fun even if it fails, oh boy. Teq flies in, lands, throws out the first shockwave, I jump over it…. and crash to desktop.
And that was it. That was the straw that broke my back. At that moment I threw my hands up in the air and said kitten it. Failed attempts, that’s fine. Waiting around… certainly not ideal, but I can deal with it. No rewards? Even less ideal, but again I can deal with it. Crash to desktop at the very start robbing me of an hour and a half spent waiting, potential loot, and especially the enjoyment of actually being part of a somewhat organized boss attempt? No. No no no. That just ticks me off way too much.
Especially since its the second time I’ve crashed vs Tequatl. First time was near the end of a previous overflow attempt, but it was a failed attempt and another that was going to be above 75% anyway, so that one was more annoying than anger-inducing.
One thing I would urge all people that have given up on the encounter to do is stop going there, to make it easier for the people that are still motivated to form up together.

No worries there, if some players want to bang their heads against a wall for 15 minutes the .00001 % chance at one of his weapons, you have my blessing.
I’ll sit it out because as far as I’m concerned this event was not PVE OPEN WORLD content. I’ll be farming champs; they are actually worth the time spent.
One thing I would urge all people that have given up on the encounter to do is stop going there, to make it easier for the people that are still motivated to form up together.
I never saw anyone here wanted to make it easier. This thread is not about it! This is about worst design of open world content we ever saw in any game becouse of owerflow, afk, turret trolls and other things…….+ not even worth of participating becouse reward is some garbage.
Well, since my server (Miller’s Sound) seems to have given up, it appears that I will have to give up too.
During the last few days only a group of maybe 10-20 people were participating in an unorganized chaos and the TS-channel was abandoned. Guesting on another server might be an option, but honestly I see no point there to do server-hopping only to perform an event. Maybe over the weekend it will be possible to get 80+ people again…
It’s quite a pitty because I really think the basic design idea behind the overhaul was promising, but I believe this isn’t what ANet intended to happen.
I gave up on it after a few tries. After seeing what others where getting as rewards for finishing, it’s just not worth my time.
I’ve given up too. I’ve tried guesting to another world, but I can’t get a main server anywhere and there are just too many people AFK.
I think it is hilarious that Anet thought that people would stand around doing nothing for hours at a time for weeks on end to beat the boss.
If it spawned once an hour, on the hour, and you always knew exactly when it was going to spawn, then maybe people would. As it is, people can spend their entire day’s gaming time just waiting for a spawn (yes, Anet, a lot of players have RL and can only play an hour or two a day or less), just for one person on a turret to d/c, or be away when it spawns, etc and the attempt to fail.
Without a proper timer most people won’t continue attempting it, it’s certainly not worth wasting my time for, and judging by my last visit to an overflow that was the general consensus (well, of the people I could understand who were speaking in English on map chat).
What happens now? People turn up, smack him once or twice, maybe smack a bone wall or two down and spend the rest of the fight playing ‘smack the mobs spawning near turrets’ for their daily, knowing full well as soon as they appear in that overflow that there is ZERO chance of beating him.
Badly designed and executed content and now we find out ANet thinks their playerbase is so dumb they would hang around for WEEKS doing nothing but failing a boss, only to find out the drops are rubbish, and then think the players would be happy with this? Talk about treating your players with utter contempt.
Of course, probably nothing will be done in the short term and the ‘living world’ teams grinding out new content every two weeks will have to schedule in some time to fix it – so maybe six months from now…or if wvw is anything to go by, they will introduce capping stones so the middle of the map looks like a spvp arena which give no experience and don’t give you Teq completion but must be held for you to be able to beat Teq.
Yesterday oceanic time on IoJ there were about 6 ppl at teq, so I think it is fair to say that the oceanic players on IoJ have given up unfortunatly
It’s the same on Devona’s Rest.
Our server hasn’t a hope of defeating Tequatl during NA primetime, let alone when the Oceanics want to play. Driving players to guest on another server to get the achievements is unacceptable. The server lost most of it’s WvW population due to terrible WvW matchups, and now we seem to be losing our PVE’ers as well…
(edited by RottenRagamuffin.3159)
In my opinion, the level of coordination required for this type of content should be within the confines of dungeons/raids and not in open world event.
There are simply to many factors that add to the experience (AFKers, inexperience, trolling) in open world that make the event less fun that what it is on paper.

I think they sould not release new update until the last one is flawless and majority of players are satisfied with it. Better new content every mounth but flawless then every 2 weeks but horribly designed.
Last 2 patches showed us how badly Anet handle it. Both are one big bad design but nothing will be done about it sooner then in 6 months like you said.

Intended… maybe. They should have predicted it, though. All they had to do was look at the attendance at temples and the Karka Queen for all those months. The events were done on a few servers (if that) and left to rot on the rest. Dragonite got people doing some of the temples again, but that won’t last, either.
They were expecting it and people complain that they were expecting it? I guess it ‘s the same people who didn’t even manage to beat him once. Pointless to complain about that fact.
Thought its absolutely legal to complain if they designed the content while keeping in mind that people shouldn’t beat him even once in serveral weeks, then the basic idea of the reward system is as bad as the Diablo 3 reward-system.
At least theoretically, and that idea was one of the reasons of Diablo 3 ’s downfall and the massive distrust in Blizzard as a company (ultra low RNG dropchance for pretty hard content namely Inferno Mode).
Beware stepping over that line AreaNet, especially with Ascended Stuff. Unless you want to repeat Blizzards massive misstakes (which they even partly admited – even if its to late for them now).
I absolutely love Tequatl and it ’s challenge, but that offical statement from above makes me think twice about the future. Some pretty big European PvE-Servers like Elona Reach and Desolation are already left short of Commanders and Organization on a Saturday Evening at 08:00 PM, not even two weeks after the Release.

Well got my tittle and ascended drop rate seems to be so bad that probably won’t do it anymore. This game is like WoW, but bosses don’t drop anything fun.
Exactly :-D They dont want this game be like wow (Yes they never said it officially, but it is clear, after all lof of them are former employees of Blizzard as far as i know). So they think that if we instead of forming big groups ourselves group up with just every random ,,someone" and not getting good loot from boss is better?
Or gearing one character for mounths by crafting and farming materials and gold instead getting whole gear in dungeons should better too?
Do they really think we will consider this game to be best just becouse they dont add new tier of gear every 3 mounths?
WoW is total grindfest game but at least its style is working.
Two patches were enough to change this game from something unique and fun to gringfest that is not even worth of participating.
I am not agains hard content but the way Anet is doing it is total fail.
The major difference you forgot about is that WoW NEEDS you to have the BiS gear for new content, whilst in GW2, nothing needs Ascended items.
I have killed TEQ once, I have a some of the other TEQ achievements, and 4 more to go.
As there’s no notification now of when TEQ is about to start, and as I am not going to sit in Sparkfly for hours bored stupid, I have given up getting those other 4 acheivements.
What’s actually sad is most in the forums already voiced their concerns with the 80 man min req even before teq was launched. even foreseeing a repeat of southsun as well as several suggestions to make the loot count if they’re making the content this hard. sad to say EVERYTHING WENT TO DEFT EARS and to make matters worse we see this “We are aware of it and actively discussing it.We were hoping originally it would take days/weeks for players to defeat Tequatl instead of 12 hrs.” which is pretty much what arena net thinks of our opinions.
And ohh god the same clueless group is still planning to screw around with the other bosses…

The reason the good drops are rare is because once people start getting the hang of it, people will be downing teq as if he wasn’t buffed at all.
If you take a look at this screenshot I took, this was the latest run I did with my guild, he’s got pretty much no hp left and we still have 6 minutes left on the clock, this has been happening on a daily basis for the past 5-6 days. If we had a really high chance of good drops, we could potentially have a gold farm going on.

Just make reward from him account bound and no good price from vendor and problem is solved. He should have high chance to drop ascended stuff (weapons) anyway. At least it would invalidated ascended crafting.
Beat him once, after probably 20+ failures. Each of those failures consisted of me sitting around, waiting for him to spawn, for at least 30 minutes – an hour. I’m on US servers, but I work 10-12 hour graveyard shifts, and have to sleep during primetime. This means that I’ve actually lost quite a bit of sleep, trying to stay awake until primetime, just for the sheer chance of beating him.
I bought an entire invader’s PVT gear set to try and pull my weight as much as possible, given away countless undead potions and set up as many trays of food as I could, trying to get people to pitch in as much as possible so I could have a chance of killing him even once. I’ve guested on servers where I was told they were more active during early morning (When I get off work) and tried to beat him with those servers.
Eventually, while staying up for almost 24 hours straight, I finally managed to beat him. With my home server, thankfully…and I was shocked at how bad the actual rewards were. Yeah, I got a title, but there’s ridiculously easy bosses that drop better guaranteed loot. Did they decide to trade “reward for effort” for “chance at epic gear,” and expect people to be happy with that?
Am I disappointed? Extremely. I jokingly said “watch, we’ll beat him and we’ll all walk away with nothing but blues and greens.” I didn’t honestly expect that to be the truth. I’m just disappointed with the amount of coordination it required, how easy it is to fail, how one rogue / bad turret operator can lose the battle, how long we have to wait for an unexpected appearance, and how quick we have to control all other factors…and then to top it all off, how absolutely unrewarding it is. It’s pretty much the hardest boss in the game.
Granted, I felt proud that I killed him. I’m happy with my title. Server loyalty, coordination, togetherness….all that’s good. I’m not gonna lie. There’s absolutely no way that I’m going to waste all that time again, just for a gamble on a gamble. I invest an hour into waiting, gambling that the current people I’m waiting with are going to win. And then even if they win, there’s another gamble that’ll more or less decide if I get properly rewarded? With something other than a single rare and crappy blues/greens?
Or, you know, I could do a guild bounty and get 2 guaranteed rares / exotics. So yeah, you could say that I’ve given up on him. I see no reason to come back to Tequatl in its current state, unless I find a guild that’s entirely devoted to killing him 800 times a day or something. Risk vs Reward (vs time invested).
I’m just shocked that the guaranteed drops are so absolutely kitten poor. I got my achievements, I’m not going to spend my life Akitten Sparkfly waiting for a chance to kill him for a chance at an ascended weapon and a chance that it can be equipped by my class, and a chance that it has a stat combination that I can use. Oops, cancel that. It’s condition, Prec, Toughness. No thanks. The skin alone isn’t worth all this noise.
TLDR: Not asking for a nerf. Asking to properly reward effort. Teq’s going to be primarily empty from now on if they leave him in this state.
(edited by Sokina.8041)
I really enjoy all the dragon fights and the changes made with Teq. That being said, I seriously doubt I will be attempting that fight again anytime soon. I’m on Blackgate and every time I have gone out there I was in an overflow. After waiting around for 3 rotations of the fight and STILL being in overflow I gave up. Maybe after the hype wears down and you don’t get stuck in overflow for several hours I will consider trying again.
I did the achievement and got the wings. I’m not interested in the sunless title. Unless they scale him back a bit I will never visit Teq again in this incarnation. There’s no point and no motivation to do so.
Yak’s Bend Server
Crimethink [ct]
i havnt given up on him but i did get super kittened after waiting on a guest server for 2hrs only to DC during the actual kill, FML. If i wasnt on holidays i would not even bother with this boss event.
I was close to beating Teq once, but got disconnected with 1 minute before the kill. Didn’t make it back in. No reward.
Things I didn’t like:
- 30min spamming join x party member to get in the main server.
- another 30min waiting in Sparkfly for event.
- I was in mumble with 125 random people (should not be a requirement to go through open content in a game; or make voice chat available in game for people to communicate properly)
- the fight itself was boring on a personal level. Just a zerg-ball with a lot of bloom and special effects; couldn’t see much of anything. Nothing hard about it. I’d say the only thing hard about this fight is the wait time, getting in the right server instance and for the commanders to organize the turret parties)
But after failing this event I realized how toxic the game was becoming. Everything was frustrating, no fun at all.
So I stopped playing GW2 (for ~ 3 weeks now) and picked up five other games. Wow, what I good change that was. Having a blast and I recommend that to anyone who has become frustrated with the game. Do yourself a favor.
Might try GW when I see something fun (which is the whole point of a game)
TL;DR: Take a break and try something new if you’re dissatisfied with the game experience GW is giving you. A sensible advice.
