Giant Wintersday gift
The items found in the gifts are a bit random. Giant gifts are awarded to level 60-80 players and should contain somewhat level appropriate gifts.

Ok.. I just don’t understand why I would spend 10 sweaters to open a present that gives me one of the same sweater.

True..but did you notice all of the other stuff that he has? Most of the gift boxes contain a random chance for one of those things. Worst case, you open a bunch and have enough to purchase one outright.
wait wait wait…
I can get a Christmas Sweater? Where is this magical gift of awesomeness?

No it is busted. I spent a ton of wool stuff to get one of the same wool material
It is like blowing say 20 plat ores to get one in return.
WTF is this junk?

You bought a Giant Gift (lottery ticket) instead of one of the weapon skins or consumables, and the lottery ticket you bought was a losing one. Not junk, not a conspiracy

Well at least I know not to waste anymore on the gifts since the things the vendor sells don’t interest me in the slightest.

At least with salvaging you get something useful.

A bit random?? Seriously?
Exchange 10 ugly wool sweaters for a better gift and that better gift is a single ugly wool sweater?
Really?
ANet I thought you were better than this.
Ok, opening up a PURCHASED gift you bought with the sweaters/socks/hats should NEVER give you one of the sweaters/socks/hats…..ever. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs some educating.
It should have a small chance to give you one of the items for sale, and then a big chance for either a small amount of the tradeskill items or some other frivolous item, but never the exact thing you used to purchase it with, and only one at that. Put near worthless items in if you want, but SOMETHING other than the purchase items for gods sake!
This is MMO basics 101. A lottery that costs 10 tickets and rewards you with 1 ticket back is something that makes no one happy, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that one out either.
1. Save up your sweaters/socks/hats and buy the stuff you can’t live without. (You have chances to get them in the presents for the events afaik)
2. After you have everything you want, spend your extras on the randomizer.
It’s how I’ve always dealt with this mechanic in mmo’s.

While this is true, and the way it will be done most times….the random presents still should reward other useless crap aside from the items used to buy the presents themselves. I dont remember playing an MMO that has done it this way, but I might just have blocked it out. I am totally used to getting crap out of a lottery box, and kinda expect it, but this just struck me as worse than normal.
Its just a “psychological” thing I guess, but getting back one of an item you spent 10 to buy “feels” wrong if nothing else, and in an MMO, how something feels is very important.

Yup, just opened 3 giant gifts, 2 sweaters and the princess wand skin.
Every giant gift I’ve opened gives me 1 piece of the junk. But it’s a lotto I guess, and you can save them anyway for the skins. edit: also you seem to be able to get them everywhere, as a mob drop for example, so calling it “giant” is kind of a weird choice
(edited by TurtleofPower.5641)
I think linguists need a better word for random since some people can’t seem to understand it.
As for getting the item you used to participate, well I guess that’s supposed to make us feel that we only wasted 9 items instead of 10 hahaha.
The rate for sweaters appears to be pretty high. 12 giant gifts = 7 sweaters, 3 hats, 2 socks.

Still not even close to worth it
Rather random it seems :/ Opened 10, got 10 sweaters.

Like a lotto ticket giving you 3 more dollars for 3 more lotto tickets…
The vicious trailer park cycle of life if you will.
So 10 Ugly wool sweaters = a Giant wintersday gift and that gift gave me 1 ungly wool sweater…..
Working as intended?
MEH! Some people will never be happy! That’s why you get coal for Christmas! THANK YOU ARENA NET FOR FUN EVENTS! And that is all
I appreciate the work they bring us!
I think this game is truly amazing, and Winters day events too. But i think all expect more really needed items in gift boxes. Like some chance for 1-2 gems or 0,1% chance of Black Lion Key. Those who buy GW2 now have cool discount and those who buy it earlier have some skins for weapons. It is sad for us – think about this )
And i want buy one sweater for 100 and WEAR it. )
But i really love this game. Thanks ARENA NET.
Ive opened six and got six sweaters. If its a rare chance at something else I’m cool with that, just reporting in case its broken or supposed to be giving more than 1 item.

Its a rare chance for the items the vendor sells IMO not worth it.

I opened one and got a toy sword skin

It’s fairly simple. You go to the store and some guy is handing out free lotto tickets. Each one has a 1% chance of rewarding you gold watch, but a 99% chance you’ll only get a token You scratch each off and only get a token each time. You go into the store, now you can save up your tokens and for 100 of them you can buy that watch, OR for all ten tokens you can buy a “super” lotto ticket, that has a 10% chance of rewarding that gold watch, but still a 90% chance of just a token.
You rolled, you lost, the game isn’t broken.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”
So 10 Ugly wool sweaters = a Giant wintersday gift and that gift gave me 1 ungly wool sweater…..
Working as intended?
Random, but definitely intended. I bought only one, and it got me 3x Bells, which are really cool consumables that allow me to do Bell Choir anywhere I choose for a short period (I suck at it though). So, it’s really…lottery man.
Ok.. I just don’t understand why I would spend 10 sweaters to open a present that gives me one of the same sweater

That would be impossible, because he would already have enough for any of the items that are offered before exchanging his sweaters for a box that only gives one sweater.
I believe that the boxes offered from the exchange vendor should differ in that they give four to twelve sweaters instead of just the one. That way the person who purchases a box will at least get some of what he spent back, or possibly more, but keeping the randomness to the amount given in this case would be a good thing, as to prevent people from turning ten sweaters into twelve.
And considering how the black lion chest, the halloween chest, and the wintersday chest work I’d have to say that his chances of getting a weapon skin from a box would be rather low to the point where it’d be best to simply save up the sweaters/hats/socks instead of spending them on yet another RNG chest.
He played the lotto, and lost what is there to gripe about? Next time don’t buy the “gift” boxes.
Rather random it seems :/ Opened 10, got 10 sweaters.
Actually the problem isn’t that it’s random; it’s that it’s extremely predictable.
9 out of 10 times, you “exchange” 10 unwanted sweaters for… 1 unwanted sweater. I guess it saves some space, but it seems kind of pointless. The gifts could definitely use a bit more variety.
Even casinos make sure the odds are around 40-49% in favour of the punter, to give the addicts some hope (while ensuring that the house always wins, on average). If the chance of winning at roulette was 5%, very few people would play, and the casino would actually make less money than with balanced odds.
The value of what you get out of gifts should, on average, be just slightly lower than what they cost. In other words, if a certain type of gift costs 10 sweaters, it should, on average, contain about 8 sweaters (or something of equivalent value).

Lol, I’m cracking up so hard. I totally understand why someone would be upset if they only ever bought 1 gift and opened it and got a sweater hahaha.
And where is giant gift, direct me please.

i love these someone has a sense of humour, since this event started i’ve spent alot of my time laughing.

Lol, what people don’t realize is that this event truly is awesome, you just have to have some LUCK. For example, my new character is level 16, and by level.. 10? 12? I had gotten a Sparky Wand Skin (Scepter Skin) -that’s worth 150 socks- from a SMALL Wintersday Gift, and so far, I have about 35 socks. Anyway, the theme/phrase of this event is luck, so keep those fingers crossed.
I had gotten a Sparky Wand Skin (Scepter Skin) -that’s worth 150 socks
It’s actually worth less than that, because you can buy the skin at the TP for 36s (and you can make 36s by selling less than 150 socks).
In fact, an even better deal is to buy 100 sweaters and exchange them for the skin (ends up costing you 28s).
In the time required to get 150 socks (or 100 sweaters) most players can easily make 1g, so the whole thing is kind of pointless for anyone high enough to run dungeons (level 35+).
I’ve done the jumping puzzle and other activities several times because they’re fun, but as a way to get the skins they’re extremely inefficient. It’s much easier to buy all the skins at the TP, and use your “farming” time to recover the gold by doing activities you enjoy more.
The only reason to gamble on the presents at all is if you are desperately trying to get the bell or pet (assuming the pet even drops, which is unconfirmed). Everything else is cheaper at the TP (and will probably get even cheaper over the next week).

Just bought 40 giant gifts and got 38 sweaters….
That doesn’t seem right.
wait wait wait…
I can get a Christmas Sweater? Where is this magical gift of awesomeness?
LOL Best comment Eeeever
Maybe Anet should consider an MF recipe (or set of recipes) for the ugly clothing items. Say 250 ugly sweaters + 250 ugly socks + 250 wooly hats + x (where x isn’t unreachable) of one of the other chrimble items to make something awesome that disgruntled peeps (those of us that only seem to get the wooly or ugly stuff) would be happy with.
(I have to know! In WvW, do Legendary NPCs drop Legendary loot?)
-_- collecting 250 of these? 150 is already to much or they should reward more.

Yes, it does. You got 2 other items as well. It will either drop an ugly thing, or any of a set of other items (bells, snowflakes, skins, etc). And that is an “OR” and not an “AND”.
But… But.. did you notice all the other stuff you can buy?
Retired Until Expansion or Meaningful Content is Released.
I may be wrong, but the way I looked at the gifts at the merchant were more for trading to what you need, for example, you were in a lower zone and got socks, but you are collecting sweaters towards your goal, so you trade towards what you need, knowing what the box is going to contain, and an extremely rare chance to get something else.
Ok.. I just don’t understand why I would spend 10 sweaters to open a present that gives me one of the same sweater

I’m not sure you are getting what they are talking about in this thread.
In another thread, a dev says that the only difference between the boxes is the snowflakes.
Bigger boxes have bigger snowflakes, and that’s all.
Both a tiny and huge box have the same chances to drop anything else, and in the same quantities.
Because of that, unless you want bigger snowflakes, getting anything but tiny boxes is a huge waste, which is counter-intuitive, since they also cost much more ugly clothes in the gift exchangers.
Bigger boxes should have given greater amounts of the items they share with the others.
Not enough to generate more ugly clothes in an endless loop, but enough not to be such a massive, massive waste that it is, EVEN if you want the bigger snowflakes.

I’m not sure this information is accurate. When I’m running around on above 50 maps and pop presents (or get presents in normal drops, which happens reasonably often), I always get Giant presents. When I open those, I either get skins, bells, snowflakes, or sweaters. I have not yet gotten socks/hats from Giant presents and I’ve been opening them like crazy. I feel reasonably confident that my magic find stats affect things and my level/map level affects things. If I drop down to a lower level map, like Gendarran Fields, I get a mix of Giant and the next size down. The Giant presents still always give me sweaters.
Giant presents are broken but no one else seems to have figured it out. They only ever award 1 item when you open them, be it a snowflake, ugly item or a rarer item.
Large and Medium presents award 3-4 ugly items, a snowflake or a rare every time.

Dude. that is exactly what lottery tickets do.
90% of scratch ticket" wins" are $1 back.
Real lottery..
Buy ticket for $1.
65% are nothing.
30% are $1 back.
4% are $4.
.9999% are $20
.00000000000001 are $50,000

I submitted a bug report because I thought the system was broken.
I bought 2 Giant Wintersday Gifts in Lions Arch and when I opened them nothing happened. I thought they the game was glitched and it just didn’t give me the gift.
Sounds like I probably got a wool item and didn’t notice when it added to my stack.
Not sure where I should have gone to find out what is in the gifts. I was expecting them to be more like Black Lion Chests.
At least with the lottery I know what the potential prizes are and I know what my chances are of winning.
Having opened over 8000 gifts, 1k giant, 1k large, 100 personalized, the rest spread between small and medium, here’s my observations:
1) They all have the same chance to drop unbreakable choir bell & endless tonic
2) Only the giant has the chance to drop Foostivoo, the mini pet
3) Giant drops sweaters; Large has a chance to drop all three; medium drops hats and socks; and small drops socks only
4) The level of the snowflakes, crafting recipes, and runes/sigils vary appropriately from small to giant.
5) Personalized has a chance to drop everything, except Foostivoo (I think).
6) Every other drop has approximately the same chance.
All this info is also available on the wiki on the presents. There is a page collecting the drop rates too ><
