What Gifts?
Play the game and you will find them.
Either as drops from mobs or from open world nodes (these will come with mobs however, so get ready to fight).

Piken Square
You can also get them from activities and events in LA. As well as purchasing them with Glory in the Mists lobby. Here, there, everywhere! =)

So, above, both of you are essentially saying that there are no gifts. That’s good to know so that I don’t waste my time running about the game like a Skritt with my tail cut off.
Not sure how you got ‘no gifts’ from our posts, but…as you wish. =)
Basically, Elbegast is working off the definition that a gift should be completely free, not something we get by trading in tokens or killing mobs. He was talking about getting free gifts for Wintersday in the mail and the like.
I am aware of that, but…he did ask about the ‘gifts everyone was talking about’. Thus, we provide the information regarding that question. And, it’s not like you have to kill anything to get the gifts the Dolyak gives. Or do anything, other than pick them up off the ground. I’d say those were ‘gifts’ no matter what your definition.

What Dolyak?
Those aren’t gifts. Those are loot/rewards for a group event. So if that’s all there is, then there are no gifts this year. Why even bother with a Wintersday event if there aren’t going to be any gifts?
Sigh…
Trololololololo
I am sure Anet just trying to deliver a lesson the hard way: Santa ain’t real, and probably doesn’t exist in Tyria, someone(not Santa or his elf army ofc) gonna work to get those gifts out.
Hopefully that doesn’t ruining too many kids’ childhood dream, cause one is already enough.
Happy Wintersday
chuckle
I betcha the OP would claim the freebie wintersday gifts given out in the GW1 finales weren’t gifts either. By having to stand there and receive them, you are thereby doing something ‘for’ them and therefore they are not ‘free.’

Have we become so complacent in our communication that words have lost their very meaning? What about the word ‘gift’ denotes that I must first complete an escort mission, kill mobs or do a jumping puzzle before receiving it?
‘gift’
noun
noun: gift; plural noun: gifts
1. a thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present.
2. a natural ability or talent.
verb: gift; 3rd person present: gifts; past tense: gifted; past participle: gifted; gerund or present participle: gifting
1. give (something) as a gift, esp. formally or as a donation or bequest.
Wintersday Gift, shortened within the game’s community to gift.
‘gift’ (within GW2 community)
You have to believe in things that aren’t real. Otherwise, how can they become?

It runs in conjunction with the “rare” drops we are guaranteed when doing certain meta events. Or the bloodstone dust that my mesmer is convinced is exceedingly hard to come by.
When you perform any wintersday activity – be it PvE gift boxes, Bell Choir, Toypocalypse, the jumping puzzle in LA, Tixx’ airship or help with the Dolyak events…. you will get the usual reward (karma, xp, …) and in addition one or more completely free items named Wintersday Gift.

So if my gift is under the christmas tree and I have to get it myself, get up from the couch, walk all the way over there, pick it up etc – then it’s no longer a gift!
Wander through Tyria, there are gifts around that Tixx dropped from his airship (they don’t fit through a chimney) – open them. Beware there might be broken toys attacking you or skritt that where already there trying to steal the presents. Sneak or run past them, grab the present off the ground – there ya go.
Sometimes there are none because those skritts are experts.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

So they aren’t gifts but rather bribes to keep you logged on, participating in the activities? I don’t do carrots on sticks. They should change the name of the item from ‘Wintersday Gift’ to ‘Wintersday Reward’.
Here’s a crazy idea: How about you give those gifts to other players and they open them as gifts?
It’s ridiculous to nitpick about “Are they gifts if I have to do something to get them?” but if you consider that you can give them away yourself, it seems the problem of them not being “real gifts” lands squarely on those who want to get more than they give.

I find it hilariously ironic that you talk about complacency.

I really should remember to grab popcorn the next time I pop this thread open to read it. Srsly, arguing over whether something is a gift or not based on if you have to do something as simple as open a box and grab it is a gift….
“Its not a gift if its not just given to you” Last time I checked, in order to get Christmas gifts children had to do things all year long. They had earn them by behaving, doing their chores, etc. I suppose I was raised, and raise my own children, by different standards than some people…
