Can anyone do a full version of the Jurassic Park theme?

I saw a rendition of it for the horn elsewhere, which was all wrong. And I lack the ability to play this right by ear, having never played an instrument in my life.

And I’d also love to see someone do a full version of the Journey to the Island theme. You know, that moment the helicopter arrives at the island, and the theme just explodes in epicness.

Me and a friend managed to figure out the start to Crimson Belvedre ~ Eastern Dream but after that we’re stuck, if anyone could figure a bit more out I’d be very happy.

This is what we have so far;
(- means switch octave, start in the low one)

2 4 6 5 4 3 2 1 2 2 4 6 5 4 3 – 1 – 6

and for those wondering its this theme;

I don’t think you’ll have too much luck with that. Crimson Belvedere’s key forces accidentals when transposed to the notes we have.

That said, the chorus is approximately this:

653 2 2 1 3 4
653 2 2 1 5 4
653 2 2 1 3 4
4568 (2 4 32 1 2)

Not entirely accurate, but it’s close and doesn’t sound too bad.

Do you reckon Chinese Tea would work? I’m wanting to get as many Touhou melodies nailed down as possible.

Not enough octaves on the flute, but this is what it WOULD be… (curly brackets represent an octave below the lowest on the flute)

Shanghai Teahouse ~ Chinese Tea theme:
{6} 65 87 53 556 {6} 65673
{6} 656783(2)3(3)
(3)6 (2321)7 53 556

EDIT: This means you could do this on the horn since it’s the same key but with 3 octaves.

And to the person that posted the black pearl music, do you have a video? Im trying to play this as close to the music as possible but i dont know what part you transcribed so its very difficult. Same goes for the “pirates of the caribbean” song, what part?

Still alive from portal:
43223 D5 U43223 12 D5 5 U234 2 D7 U12 D55 U3

(Note: After this repeats it changes keys: Flutes can’t change keys and thus it wouldn’t sound right so this is all that can be done)

@The person requesting the star spangled banner: It has an accidental in it where the kitten happens, so no matter how you play it, it won’t sound right because the flute can’t do accidentals.

@Everyone requesting music. If you can find a MIDI of the song, you can turn it into sheet music using a variety of programs widely available on the internet. Looking at the sheet music, if you see ANY accidentals, it is impossible to play on the flute. If the range (difference between lowest & highest note) is more than 2 octaves, it is also impossible to play on the flute. Of course if you can’t find a MIDI of the song, you could just look up sheet music for the song. That might be the easier route.

Suffice to say, most songs don’t work because they usually have key changes or accidentals. Furthermore, the flute cannot play rapid succession notes, so any song that is very fast pace or has very fast parts won’t sound right played on the flute. That will be all.

While “don’t request songs with accidentals” is good advice, I had to look up what that term even means, and I definitely can’t read sheet music well enough to replicate it in-game.

I requested this: http://musescore.com/user/22881/scores/38914#

Excusing the part where the tempo is too high, it should meet all of your criteria. If posting sheet music is more helpful to those of you who actually know what you’re doing, I’ll gladly oblige, but I wouldn’t be asking for someone else to do this for me if I knew how to do it myself.

So for all of you requesting all day long, here’s how to transcribe on your own:
First you have to find sheet music, you can have it printed out or find it on teh net, there’s alot of stuff available in form of guitar tabs which you can view with a program like Guitarpro or Tuxguitar(which is freeware). Once you’ve found your sheet music you have to check if it is playable on the flute. Your flute plays a major key (consisting of 7 different notes an dthe 8th of the lower octave being the 1st of the higher octave.
Which major mode the song you want to paly is written in doesnt realy matter for you palying alone, you will just use the base note of the mode as the 1st note on your flute.
Here are the Major modes for all of you that didnt enjoy music education or couldnt be bothered to remember them and the corresbpnding key signature (if you can’t read sheet music, you start with c one ledger line below the base line in a g-clef notation, notes going c d e f g a h c and so on):

#:
G Major (f#)
D Major (f# c#)
A Major (f# c# g#)
E Major (f# c# g# d#)
H Major(f# c# g# d# a#)
F# Major (f# c# g# d# a# e#)

b:
F Major (hb)
Hb Major (hb eb)
Eb Major (hb eb ab)
Ab Major (hb eb ab db)
Db Major (hb eb ab db gb)
Gb Major (hb eb ab db gb cb)

So you have to check the key signature, find out which key this is and assign the keys according to this. If tehre are any accidentals you cant play it on the flute, but be careful, alot of online available sheet msuic in form of guitarpro fiels and simialr dont put any key signature but just add accidentals, so it might look as if you cant paly it on the flute while in fact it’s just in a normal major key, so if i.e. every single f in that file has a # in front of it and no over chanegs are made it is in fact playable.

Have fun

Is there any chance of you being able to show us an example of how to do this? In like an image or something? I think it would help a lot, and I’d (and surely a lot of others) be eternally grateful! I’d love to be able to transcribe on my own. I can read music.. fairly ok from my elementary understand of music theory, just have some serious trouble understanding the intricacies.

I can help with that. Here’s how I transcribed the Wind Waker Title Theme.

First, we begin with the sheet music. Looking at it, we see that it has no accidentals, so it’s a perfect candidate for the flute. Next, we see the key signature: two sharps. Google can easily reveal, to anyone who does not know key signatures, that the major key with 2 sharps is D. Thus, we have a song in the key of D Major that we want to change to be in E major, because the flute is in E Major.

Next, we must understand how the flute is laid out, which is as follows:
1 – E
2 – F#
3 – G#
4 – A
5 – B
6 – C#
7 – D#
8 – E
The flute is also split into two octaves, controlled by pressing 9 to swap between them.

Now, to transcribe a song from D Major to E Major, we have to figure out how many semitones apart the two scales are. Semitones can be thought of as the most immediately adjacent note on a piano keyboard. For example, the two semitones on either side of F are F# and E.

E Major is two semitones above D Major, and you can tell this by starting on a piano at D and counting the number of keys you have to move across to get to E from D. So, starting at D, I would go “D#, E”, which gives me two keys.

Now, looking back at the sheet music for the song I want to transcribe, all I have to do to transcribe the notes is to move any note up two semitones and find the corresponding note on the flute.

(It is important that you move each note UP two semitones, because E major is two semitones ABOVE D Major. We could also have found that E Major is 10 semitones “below” D Major, and transcribe to E Major by moving every note down 10 semitones, but moving up 2 semitones is much easier to do)

The first four notes of the song are, on the sheet music, D, E, D, A (more accurately, the first four notes that are part of the tune. The sheet music has full chords, but we can’t do that on our flute, so we just go with the notes that represent the tune, which are usually the highest notes of the chords).
Moving all of these notes two semitones up gives us
D -> D# -> E
E -> F -> F#
D -> D# -> E
A -> A# -> B

Referencing the flute’s button-to-note mapping, this gives us
E -> 1
F# -> 2
E -> 1
B -> 5

Now, taking into consideration the fact that, in the song, the E F# E is supposed to be followed by a lower B, I have to use the higher octave to play E F# E and the lower octave to play B.

So now we have
(1 2 1) 5
as the first four notes of the song. Move the rest of the notes up two semitones and match them to the buttons and compare them to my transcription.

EDIT: Make sure to share your transcriptions, we all want to expand our repertoires.

Ok so I gave it a shot.. and assuming I got it right means that I probably can’t transcribe the song I want to play, which is a shame! But to make sure I’m doing it right:

Rose of May

This is the song I wanted to try. It’s kind of simple but very pretty and suitable for the flute. I cut out the beginning and started at the melody because.. the beginning scared me (so many squiggly lines and things). I googled and it’s in the key of F Major, so for it to be transcribed to E major, I’d have to go down just one semitone. So this is what I got:

Original (F major)
FGAB B | CBAG G

Semitone down (E major)
E F#G#A# A# | B A#G#F# F#

Looking at the flute.. there’s no A# and the song doesn’t sound right so I guess.. it can’t be transcribed properly? Or maybe I got it wrong. Also thankyou for the detailed reply, was super easy to understand and give it a go. I just hope i dun gud job and didn’t mess up. :P

Original (F major)
FGAB B | CBAG G

Semitone down (E major)
E F#G#A# A# | B A#G#F# F#

Therein lies your issue. The original is actually

DEFG G | AGFE E

which makes it, in E Major
C#D#EF# F# | G#F#ED# D#

You shouldn’t be able to get a B natural without accidentals in this song because the key signature says to turn all Bs into B flats. That’s why you had an issue: B natural is an accidental for the key signature of your song, so transposing it to E Major means you’d need an accidental in E Major.

You may find this note reference helpful for determining what note corresponds to each location on the staff.

Keep in mind that the key signature changes notes. In your song, the key signature contains a flat on B, so every B shown on the staff in your song is actually a B flat unless noted otherwise via accidentals.

Oooo I see. Things aren’t as simple as they seem then. I’ll have to do more reading and experimentation then. I’m musically challenged to say the least but I’ll keep trying things out.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Anyone else having troubles playing songs since the new patch? When you use the same note it cancels the sound completely… No more:

  • My Heart Will Go on
  • Puff the Magic Dragon
  • Fear not this night
  • Guild Wars Theme
  • Ode to Joy
  • Rains of Castamere
  • God save the queen

Well, this is crap.
Can Anet check this out and revert the change? Make the sound cancel if you click Escape key, but not pressing the same key twice as it ruins a lot of good songs!

Lets hope Anet sees this and reverts the change or puts the Esc key as the sound cancellation… Otherwise we just got half our songs ripped off.

Sure! This is the “full song”, that is, it includes directions to repeat when the song repeats and such. Some of the lines written out are also basically the same as previous lines but with slight timing differences, so I just wrote those out as well. There are probably still some duplicates but whatever.

Here it is. Unfortunately, since we don’t have 3 octaves, we can’t do the second part exactly right (we get all the notes, but it’s not in the right octave in comparison to the first part).

The Irish Washerwoman

(311) 588 (313 543)

Do you reckon Septette for Dead Princess or Candid Friend would be playable?

Dear Anet,

While I appreciate the option to halt the flute notes, I do wish we had a special key to do so (i.e “ESC” – which already halts the tone by itself) while leaving the other notes undisturbed. The way it is now, we can’t play repeated notes without an annoying break in it.

Thank you

While you can’t hold the note through to another note, you can quickly double tap the key to “restart” the note. Not as pretty as the held note to held note transition, but it works for me in most cases. Hope that helps

Septette has some accidentals that prevent parts from sounding right. Candid Friend I can’t make sound right (more specifically, the first bit sounds OK, but the second part just sounds wrong).

Sheet music is helpful yes. It’s a very simple task to make flute music from sheet music. Also, if you’re having so much trouble with the note cancellation just double tap the note you wish to play. If you do it quick enough it actually allows for things like staccato, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, etc instead of just legato quarter, half, or whole notes. I like the change albeit difficult to get used to.

For transcribing music you can just look up the key it’s in, if it’s a major key, simply find the first note of that major key’s scale and set that to be your 1/8. From there just figure out the other #s from the 1/8 you’ve previously established (low octave 8 = high octave 1)
