But the store exclusives? Were talking low orbit on the price for those now.
That we can agree on.
At first glance, absolutely. But just remember they are from the gem store, and returning them after the 15th patch will be a money-grabber ANet would be foolish to miss.
I’ve learned not to invest in gem store items the hard way.

Hmm… So we might actually see a drop in price for the exclusive dyes come tomorrow’s update. Might be a good time for me to pick up a couple I had my eye on, but thought were too expensive.

Anyone else think ectos could increase in value? With the scheduled metaevents, ectos will most certainly be acquired at a fixed rate now.
I’ve been hoarding my 1250 or so stacks I got from metaevents in the past 2 weeks hoping it’ll rise on average 2-3 s.
An increase in ectos would also surely result in increased T5 prices.

I think it will depend on whether the schedule winds up bringing more individual players (particularly those on small pop servers) into the metaevents.
While the people who used to hit them as often as possible may be limited, the average player will actually have more access to the events now, so if they choose to do the events more there could be a price drop in ectos.
Karka shells ….
No one in the EU will be doing the KQ because of the crap spawn times. This was the only reason to go to SC, so supply is going to get hit.

Where did you find this? I’m wondering on it’s legitimacy, and the wording is confusing me.
Say, for example, I’ve used 3 Blacklight dyes – am I getting 2*Blacklight back, or am I getting 2*Toxic Dye Kit?
I’m doubting it’s legitimacy because what stops me now going and buying Pyre, Glacial Sky etc. for ALL of my characters then just being refunded them?

Thanks.
Well, it’s been fun buying dyes on the TP for 40 copper a piece.
I unlocked all colors when dyes are like 4 copper a piece at the launch.
Prices on the most expensive dyes quadrupled. Funny how almost every change ArenaNet makes raises in-game costs. Getting to the point where you need thousands of gold to afford customization choices.

The game has become a major gold sink for just about everything you do now.
I was playing too much anyway, thanks for breaking my habit Anet.

Really? Which ones? Because everything I looked at was down.

Uh, no they haven’t. I’ve been watching dye prices like a hawk, and the only significant change is that Abyss and Celestial have gone DOWN about ten gold, and most of the other dyes are now back to pre-March 25 speculation levels. Pack-exclusive dyes are pretty much unaffected so far.

Whats the current price for unidentified dyes?
Last time I checked before work they were at 21,5s sell offer.
The trading graphs seem to be bugged at unidentified dyes atm.

If you had gem store exclusive dyes unlocked on multiple characters, you will get the SAME dye back but those will be sent to you some time between 5th and 12th of may i think, which should result in more supply and lower prices.
Unidentified Dyes will never get significantly more expensive than they are (except in bursts of rampant speculation, like we saw a week or so ago). Remember that their supply is in many ways tied to Laurels, and as soon as it becomes more profitable to convert Laurels to dyes instead of to T6, the prices will quickly equalize back to level.
tl;dr: Dyes and T6 prices are closely related through the ‘value’ of a Laurel.
So now that Unid dyes aren’t gained by drops and they cost 5 laurels, kaboom.

Missed that part of the patch notes, but after checking you’re correct. Still though the recipe uses Unid Rare Dyes
I impulse purchased 600g worth of unid dyes.
I regretted it immediately.
In real life I also get burned by impulse purchases…
I really should start putting my gold in the guild bank
I got 250 unidentified dyes at 17.2 silver yesterday.
With enough time, these should be highly profitable. The laurel change was unexpected.

See this is what I thought about when I purchased all those dyes.
But there is always a give and take.
While supply will be limited in the near future, and the low price right now is a one-time supply dump, what can we say about demand? Since dyes are account bound now, there is no incentive to purchase dyes if you have the whole palette unlocked.

the demand right now and the future pretty much is only for making bifrost as you said most people have most dyes and new players can simply purchase the specific dye they want. it will rise due to them being harder to obtain but it wont be anywhere near silver doubloons as they are even harder to get
I had 511 unidentified dyes sent to me yesterday, and I am sure many others received many more than this.
There is a massive over supply right now, that will take a long time to dissipate.
It will take some time, but if they release a new legendary that takes gift of color you will be happy you had some on hand. Also I think many people were opening their extras in hope for a abyss or other expensive rare dye. Making the dye sets through cooking is kind of expensive as well. I don’t think that the unidentified dyes will ever be really expensive but I figure they should get to around 1 gold.. who knows how long that will take though.
I got about 200 rare dyes on buy order for 5s yesterday. Throw them in the forge, got abyss on second forge, celestial on 8th. Stopped and listed all remaining dyes for 30-50s each.
I already had all the expensive rare dyes I wanted unlocked (abyss, celestial, midnight ice, etc..).
In my unidentified dye experience I get on average 1 rare dye from 20 unidentifieds. So, that means a possible 25 rares from the 511. Since launch I have had 2 abyss and 1 celestial dye drop. The odds of one of these dropping out of the possible 25 is not worth all the mouse clicks .. ;p
I bought a few stacks of dyes since I had spare gold floating around…
Highly doubt it will skyrocket or even go up for quite some time. After a really long time though the price will be correlated with laurel/T6 and the cost to make the rare dyes with Chef (for forging or w/e).
I got about 200 rare dyes on buy order for 5s yesterday. Throw them in the forge, got abyss on second forge, celestial on 8th. Stopped and listed all remaining dyes for 30-50s each.
I had a very lucky day as well. I received about 190 unidentified dyes from duplicates. I opened them all and got 2 abyss dyes. Then I threw the remaining duplicates into the forge and got a third abyss dye! Could not believe my luck! Before yesterday, the best dye I had ever found since launch was gold dye, which sold for about 3g at the time.
The way I see it is, as the cheaper abyss and celestial dyes on the market continue to sell out, more people will try to gamble for them. I believe it is a .1% chance to get an abyss or celestial to drop. So for the gamblers one out of every thousand will drop an abyss, which should eat up the supply fairly fast.
Let’s be honest, most of the people who stocked up their alts with cheap dyes to get unids from the patch probably logged in yesterday and started dumping. The supply should slow down in a day or two and we should start to see an increase in price. I think it’ll end up around the 1g mark, somewhere around the price of 100 onions and 100 bay leaves.
PS: In no way is this fact, everything written in this post is purely speculation and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Break even was 20s so I making 3s profit. Total profit would be +-200g, but I haven’t sold yet.
But who knows where the price will end up. There is too much fluctuation that it’ll take a while to settle.
btw unid is now up to 24.
I have to reneg my earlier comments. I am actually surprised at how quickly they’ve rebounded. I spent 100 gold to get 500 unid’s, I got 264 for free from the patch. Going to divest my ore holdings since I think that JC500 is a LONG way off which is why they made ascended trinkets account bound. Gonna hold my silver but the gold and platinum is going bye bye. Since unid’s are at 23 and climbing and we have to be at peak saturation, I cannot think that these may hit 50 silver.
There is actually a pretty good way to determine the average ACTUAL value of an UID.
First we have to establish what the average common, uncommon and rare costs.
Spidy is down atm so im guestimating values.
75c for common dyes, 7.5s for uncommon dyes and 75 silver for rare dyes.
The average output of 100 UIDs is 65/25/10 for common/uncommon/rare dyes.
So the value (in silver) would be (0,75*65+7,5*25+75*10)/100=(48,75+187,5+750)/100=9,8625s

If you look at current ways to obtain unids in the game:
I can see Unid dyes selling for 1g each after some time once the supply gets used up, which we’re already seeing.

If you look at current ways to obtain unids in the game:
- 5 Laurels for 1 Unid
- 4 Rare Unidentified Color Dyes (The cheapest at the moment is about 35s each in crafting costs. Completely dependent on material prices though and this may drive the prices of those mats up as well.)
I can see Unid dyes selling for 1g each after some time once the supply gets used up, which we’re already seeing.
If you take my calculations from my last post, if UIDs cost 1g, the average common dye could cost 7.5s, the average uncommon dye 75 silver and the average rare dye 7.5g.
In order for the prices to rise that high, the average crafting value of crafted dyes would also have to rise that high. Especially for crafted rare unidentified dyes, i have severe doubts that that will ever happen.
You also forgot that UIDs will still drop from certains achievements, right now i am not 100% which those achievements are or if it has officially been announced or not.
But i think i read map completions somewhere, and in my opinion there many more ways they could add supply, for example achievement chests, LS, wvw or PVP achievements.
(edited by Wanze.8410)
I could see the demand for un-id dyes lean towards mostly Bifrost as opposed to opening the dyes for colors though.
We all know what happens when supply of something is low and is required for a popular legendary (s dubloons), so this could be interesting.

That’s if we’re going by ACTUAL value of each dye, but prices are driven up more by gambler impulses to go for the jackpot dyes. Otherwise we would have seen unid dyes sitting at 10s for the last year instead of the 40s that they hovered around. But yeah of course there are possible options that could change the supply, but as of right now what we have is a very small supply entering the market besides the few stragglers who haven’t logged in to grab their free dyes.
So, will the opened dyes sell for more in the future, too, or will those prices always be low like now and unidentifieds the only ones that rise in price to 1g or whatever?
So, will the opened dyes sell for more in the future, too, or will those prices always be low like now and unidentifieds the only ones that rise in price to 1g or whatever?
Again everything right now is pure speculation, my guess is that dyes across the board go up but very slowly for right now. The reason I believe unids will rise is a combination of gamblers hoping to luck out with jackpot dyes, the very restrictive currently known ways to obtain them, and the Gift of Color needed for Bifrost.
I don’t think they’d introduce a way to mass gain unid dyes through rewards right after making dyes account wide unlocks. I believe they want to increase the difficulty of collecting dyes for future players, which is why they changed the laurel cost to 5 for 1 Unid.
Speculation.

Nothing at all. No abyss, not a single dye worth more than 1 gold.
Can’t believe how unlucky i am.
Although I think Wanze’s average prices estimates on the common/uncommon/rare dyes seem undervalued, they are not that far off to suggest 1g for unidentified’s any time in the near or long range future.
If had to speculate, I would see 50s, perhaps 60s for unidentified dye as a possible equilibrium price, and will take quite some time to reach, as in months from now.
