Sorry to get a little “off-topic” here.

I really like that you are re-vamping PVP and the rewards to make it more accesible to everyone and proper reward the hardcore PVP-players. Honestly I don’t really like all of them and see many problems on the way, also described by the posts before mine. But I don’t want to further address this.

As I am an EXTREME Achievement-Point Farmer, my concern lies elsewhere. I know it’s my own fault and I can just stop, but I just want to speak up, as I believe there is a fair amount of people like me and we are your most loyal customers as we really (have to) play your game every day.
So my major concerns are the following:

1.) 4 more dailys in Tournaments

With introducing your daily PvP-achievements I really got my first PVP-experience. There was a time where winning tournaments was even in there. I must admit it was a real pain having to go through that every day, but at least I got better and really started to enjoy PvP to the point I got a regular Team to make tournaments.

To be honest I really don’t like the idea of re-introducing Tournament specific dailies. But I guess we just have to swallow up and do those additional 4 dailies…
I just wanted to beg you that you don’t introduce daily “Team-tournament-specific” achievements. Just make it possible to get everything via Solo-queue as that eases it up a bit.

On a side mark: I would love if you just cap daily achievement points (like 5 or 10 points per day) – That would solve all my problems!!! PLEASE!

2.) Removing Ranks & Glory

If you remove Ranks from PvP, please have a look at the Rank-specific achievements that are connected to Glory – Gladiator, Mercenary, Avenger,… and either keep the achievements in there (regardless of the rank re-vamp) or remove all points gained completely to equalise all players.

But I guess leaving it as it is will still work as points towards this are still achieved by getting points in the PvP-matches (capturing points, killing players,etc.) and even now not directly connected to the earned glory /rank.

3.) Slayer & Conquerer changes

So even more points for Skyhammer-Farmers sigh

Just my 2 cents. Sorry for the elitism. But these are things that really concern me, even if it isn’t understandable from your point of view.

I dont think its a good idea to Remove this complete cause some people liked this as a long time goal. So how about this idea?: You Remove the Ranksystem but add this Rankrewards to the Title Archievements like Ransacker, Marauder and so on? – Players would lose nothing and you can remove the Ranks

Ladder Reward

Love this is coming. And i would like to see you make it like this Wvw Season Reward so everyone can work somehow on it but at the End you give a Special Reward for the Position Archieved.
so you make a big Meta Archievement Per Season where everyone can work on it and have to do everythign we have in spvp + whats coming New – think this would help to bring a lot new Players.
And at the end you give a extra Reward for postition being in Top1000 top 500 top 200 top 100 top 10 top 3 top 1 (extra for end of season and extra for the time the season lasted – so everyone who was spot 1 per season get a reward and noone go afk after he archieved this cause extra reward at end)

I’ll post in this one since it appears to be the official discussion thread on it.

First, let me start by saying that this blog post was great. I have posted many threads over the past year stating what I think should happen to PvP and almost all of them has been done now or has been stated as planned. Obviously, that means I’m happy. I do want to break down how I feel about each one:

Gold and Experience in PvP

  • This one is huge. I’ve played PvP since head start. I leveled my thief to 80 via crafting, and I had to buy gems to do it. Otherwise, I’m made almost no money.
  • The same issue is with character progression. I acquired skill in PvP and I had no way to immediately carry that over to WvW because I was at a major level disadvantage. Like I said, these 2 changes alone make my day. I also love they are coming on the 10th.

Removing PvP and PvE gear difference

  • Again, this is something I totally agree with. See the above bullet points for gold/experience. After 1,000+ hours in PvP, I shouldn’t walk into Lions Arch looking like a trial account. Love it.

Achievements

  • This is one of my few concerns. Although, I really love this addition, I don’t like the timing. The reason I say that is the MMR issue. Currently, MMR is too high for new players. They are pooled by default in with the veterans. What this change does is guarantees that you are going to have an influx of new people in PvP. Where are those new people going? Straight for ranked tournaments, the place they least belong. I’ll reserve full judgment here, but I am mildly concerned.

Setting goals for gear

  • Although they didn’t give a lot of details, I’m pretty sure I understand what they mean. I think they mean where you identify a piece of gear you wish to obtain and then through a journey of sorts, you obtain it. This is what has been missing in PvP. Currently, it’s just a random mess of gear being dropped all at once, then nothing to work toward after. I love the idea of putting in a lot of hours to achieve a specific item.

Glory being retired as a currency

  • This one really has me puzzled. Not that glory is being retired, this is also something I’ve suggested. The weird thing is that it’s being replaced with gold. Who has the most gold? PvE players. Who has the least gold? PvP players. So, what prevents a PvE hero from coming in here and dropping all of their gold on everything day one? Your aesthetics should be a sign of your skill level. The other part of this, and possibly the most concerning, is the fact that gold can be bought with gems. If you have the best rewards tied to gold, and gold bought with gems, doesn’t that mean you can purchase the best rewards in PvP? I’ll have to hear more on this and just hope for the best for now.

Removing Rank

  • I personally love this. I think rank in this game was a really bad initially implementation. Rank was gained by glory gained, not winning. The fastest way to gain glory? Farming hotjoins with builds that weren’t conducive to team play. I think the whole rank system is a farce and I’m glad to see it die.

Ladders

  • Yes please! This is the true progression. More than gear or anything else, a ladder creates the progression that is the most meaningful…skill progression. You travel through each tier as you get better by playing with people in your same skill range. The top tier people should get the best rewards and when you see someone that has those rewards, you should immediately know that he/she is a beast.

Unknown
So, there are 2 things that I was really hoping to hear in addition to all the other goodies.

  • I have hundreds of chests. Should I wait to open them?
  • I have a bunch of glory boosters, hundreds of each of the tokens, etc. Is there any plan on finding some way to convert those items to gold or glory? It seems like all of those rank tokens would be completely wasted if there is no way to convert them to a usable currency.

In summary, thanks for the blog. I am hopeful for the things to come. I’m mildly nervous for the time frame (next few months) only because of what that has meant in the past. Hopefully the devs will understand our skepticism with that.

You forget the buff food and repair costs you have in PvE and the Material you need to craft your gear etc. While in PvP you need nothing. A small amount 15-25 silver per match will be enough. The reward should only compensate the inflation gold has, but not make PvP players richer than PvE players.

Maybe introduce turnaments with high risk but high reward. 1,25gold fee per team and winner takes all.

uh no, no, no. sPvP population is all time low.
we need drastic changes to change that.

hardcore high level competitive sPvP players should be controlling the gold economy, causing massive gold inflation and not PvE players.

the end game is sPvP, this message must be struck out very clearly.

“you want faster gold? you come do sPvP!”

i know that many players do not participate in sPvP because it is simply much more profit-able (gold wise) to play PvE / WvW and not sPvP.

this must change.

  • How these emotes are obtained is also a staple of Guild Wars 2

I do agree with this. Rank as a number and supposed show of “look how good I am/how much I’ve grinded” can go, but keep rank emote progression in the game. Don’t just turn that off.

PvP is not endgame, it is something you can do, but not that you have to do. You can start PvP with a lvl2 champ (right after you finished the intro) and you can be as effective as someone who player 3k+h and you dont need gold to do so. While in PvE or WvW you need gold to get your gear.

PvP should not be more rewarding than PvE. You should get enough gold, so you dont feel poor after playing 2 month PvP only, but not becomming richer than someone who needs the gold to buy equipment, bufffood, blueprints, …

So i have been saving my glory for over months now, and i have been leveling as intended, no glory farm in skyhammer..

I was hoping to get to the level where you can buy bags for glory. so now i would have to result to farming skyhammer to reach my goal set months ago.. to get those bags..

I guess i should have exploited to get what i want, like everyone else in this game?

Maybe you are forgetting that finishers, custom arena kits and custom arena coins costs gems, a good amount of them.

In response to all the folks saying all that matters is the new ranking system. We already have a ranking system for tPvP, and Solo queue. If you’re not on that board what makes you think it’ll be any easier to get on the new ladder system. So we scrap our existing rank system for a new one resetting all of us back to zero. 1.) I would like to see skins that drop exclusively in PvP, but have the ability to be converted for use in PvE.

5.) Let us keep earning our rank banners. I am level 40 atm, I have been working my tail off toward high end ranks. Don’t stop our progress please. It’s just time wasted. It would be akin to you guys saying Legendaries are being taken out of the game and only the people that have them now get to keep them. It’s unfair to those of us that have been working on our ranks and aren’t there yet. It’s not for lack of trying or a time investment. I have spent HUNDREDS of hours on sPvP.

6.) Give us access to all the emotes we have earned. For example /rank1 would do a bunny, /rank4 would do a wolf.

Totally agree with these three points as they are also my experience and view.

PvP exclusive armor/weapon/tonics/back items. I think it should have been that way since day 1. Why? Um, mainly due to doing different things to earn different rewards is inherently more appealing to me than doing different things to earn the same rewards. By things I mean game areas (pve/wvw/spvp). By rewards I mean skins.

Note: I do not need rewards at all to partake in pvp. Most of my characters are in early skins still. I mess around in pvp because I always find that playing against other players offers a lot more variety and exhilaration than what scripted AI offers.

Been wanting access to all the emotes I have earned since the day I started looking to get wolf. Got it, spammed it. Now I don’t have it anymore and I really want it back.

I personally want ranks to stay even if I was the only one to see it. Why? Mainly because it’s an easy way to track my personal progression. It’s the reason there are levels in any game right?

Beyond that, do what you wish…won’t make or break my decision on whether or not I play the mode. I think that part of the player base is pretty much set at this point. I feel that rewards aren’t the reason why people aren’t playing spvp/tpvp. Issues are much deeper than that.

If rewards are not significantly higher spvp populations will increase for 2-3 weeks every 3 months for the seasons. After that who wants to spvp when they can get so much more gold farming or running in wvw. I can make 2 gold an hour in wvw. I feel the rewards would need to be at least that good.

Currently one of the most underwhelming rewards within PvP is the daily & monthly system, with only four tracks to progress in each category it lacks the variety we currently see in the PvE counterparts. In the recent blog post it references changes to the daily category, this something you should extend to the monthly in time.

Suggestions for monthly: Kills, Captures, Defence, Revives, change monthly wins to games played.

gold in spvp we get cause ppl right now feel when they do spvp they miss out alot in this game what they need for there goals in this game

so ppl go farm gold, karma, items ,m aterials whatever isntead of pvp cause they cant get atleast some in pvp

per hour in pvp have to be same like per hour in pve or wvw – never higher

oh, whyme, i see plenty of others who agree with me.

a PvP player needs lots of gold for various reasons because glory will be removed, gold will be the universal currency.

they may then earn their hard earned gold on various PvP things since by then, everything will need to be purchased with gold.

yes, in the future when glory is removed, sPvP players will need gold.
and they will earn a lot more gold than those who participate in PvE / WvW.
this is for sure.

sPvP is end game. PvE players often complain about lack of content, in sPvP, sPvP players just need to have a place to kill people. that is good end game.

oh, PvE have plenty of methods to get gold to get their gear. which is sufficient enough. yet they ask for more, and still complain about lack of content.

sPvP should definitely be more rewarding than PvE / WvW because if that is not the case, then those PvE / WvW players will never be bothered to try out sPvP at all. because it will be more profitable to just keep on playing PvE / WvW. why bother with sPvP?

sPvP needs new blood, especially from PvE / WvW. the current sPvP population will never be enough.

you can only achieve this by drastically increasing the gold rewards to attract more players from PvE / WvW.

This is a great topic, and I would love to give feedback, but it seems you are already planning a lot of ideas that would integrate pvp more with wvw/pve in terms of rewards, and I like where you are going with it.

It feels like the goal posts have shifted because many of the suggestions I had in mind are similar to what you posted in the blog. I am intrigued by the reward system for working toward gear sets that you mentioned.

One concern is that taking away rank feels like taking levels off players in pve, will we get an advanced standing for our current rank in the new system? Another way to measure our progress for time spent playing as opposed to rewards based purely on competition (ladders)?

I don’t care that much about a total reset to “level 1” to be honest (will be fun just working up again), but I can see why some people would feel bad about it.

i highly doubt there will be enough gold rewarded for it to actually be profitable by active farming (compared to what u can make in PvE with CoF runs and the like)

not having instant access to skills is pretty meh – i wont be able to create characters on the fly and hop into tourneys right away so its kind of a waste of time to have to grind for the skill points

And what´s this new need to level a pvp character, this is ridiculous! the foundation of this game pvp is, everyone is equal and hability is what matter…But now i can´t even create an alt and go to play with it….

People were earning 30k+ glory a 5min match because of this. Say you earned 500glory on average a match you were getting 50,000glory at the end of matches and they never rolled back the people who benefited from this the first day which was stupid. So you have some people with millions of glory that benefited from this that never had that glory taken from them. No one cared about glory and this bug before because it was worthless but if your putting stuff in the game that makes it actually worthwhile thats not fair to legit players and players who didn’t benefit from the bday bug/skyhammer farming. First, thank you for taking the time to map out your intentions and I’m sure you have more planned.

The short version first with the explanations below
While I appreciate that gold may not be the only sPVP reward, gold as the primary sPVP reward mechanism seems very difficult to properly balance. Properly rewarding skill and commitment across very different game types, maintaining prestige when allowing things to be transferred between different methods of achieving them, and keeping a balanced, skill based sPVP system with skill unlocks all have potential to be problematic.

commitment vs skill
While not mutually exclusive, some players want to demonstrate their skill and other players know they will never be the best but would still like to receive rewards as they play. Currently some people feel most in game sPVP rewards are a way to reward commitment more than skill. Winning tournaments hosted external to in game mechanics(ESL, PAX, etc), and leader-boards are how skill is rewarded . Some players would like in game skill to be rewarded more, and its possible that ladders could be one way to do this, though properly rewarding higher ladder players vs lower ladder players sounds contentious. Further removing all rank rewards may make some players feel that they are no longer being rewarded for long term commitment to the game since they lack the skill or regular play time required to effectively play in a ladder season. Gold may provide some reward for commitment but doesn’t provide any means for these players to differentiate themselves from a PVE player. Are titles going to be the only distinguisher?

Prestige vs accessibility
There is currently prestige associated with equipment. Allowing unlocking of all skins with gold will diminish the prestige. Players like to demonstrate accomplishments in a particular area of the game which requires the means of demonstrating that mastery be exclusive. Other players want to be able to get any skin regardless of the game mode they feel inclined to play. This is not compatible with demonstrating mastery of a certain area. It is already impossible to attain certain things without playing or having played certain content. This needs to remain true for rewards relating to hard content in both modes or else these players will not feel rewarded for their accomplishment.

Gold as the primary pvp currency/reward
There must be something of value to spend gold on in sPVP as well as WvW and PVE otherwise it will not be useful to players who exclusively sPVP. However, people who have sPVPed currently have far less gold than those who have PVEd. If gold becomes the main tool for getting rewards in PVP, existing PVP players will be disadvantaged unless a reasonable conversion rate appears for glory. Another issue is experience, karma, gear, and a number of other currencies are also received while playing PVE. If there is no PVP exclusive currency or rewards, that could perhaps be combined with gold when purchasing things, then PVP rewards will likely remain behind PVE rewards. If PVP players are further required to spend the gold they are getting on Experience to unlock skills, when experience comes through most actions in PVE they will further be disadvantaged. Instead of having a system where you can gain rewards and use them in both game types it could be only possible to move effectively from PVE into PVP. With only gold gain being possible and the requirement to use this gold to access skills which will come through natural XP gain in PVE, it would appear you would need to gain gold much more quickly in sPVP. Additionally passive XP gain feels more natural to me than converting gold or glory.

Skills and new players.
One draw of the game is sPVP players to be on a balanced playing field in terms of stats and gear. Requiring XP to unlock skills seems counter to this.

Rewards influence player behaviour in games. It is great that you get XP for rezing and that resource nodes are not exclusive. Making rewards in sPVP based around the challenge your opponents presented rather than speed of completing things while maintaining the ability to reward less skilled players seems like it will be difficult. Further maintaining a sense of prestige and accomplishment relating to skins acquired in different game types will be difficult. Finally balancing the rate of reward gain when the currency is shared between game types also adds complexity. Maintaining some division between these game types might make it easier to balance between them.

While I do enjoy the rewards, and appreciate the idea of having some transfer of rewards between game types my primary concern is that a positive playing environment is maintained in the game. No matter what I’m sure you will offend someone but I appreciate the effort you are making to try to improve the game and allow players to feel rewarded while playing multiple game types.

My only real concern is, what will happen to our existing skins in sPvP? Please give us the choice to not just bring PvE skins in, give us the capacity to bring our PvP skins out! At least for the ones that exists in both game modes.

As a player who did PvE in the past and almost completely switched to PvP, I don’t like all of the updates.
Ladder: I like the ideas of Ladders. This way we can get closer to real PvP and have more competition. Hopefully some teams will return once this update hits.
Currency: Being able to aquire Gold in PvP is not a good thing in my opinion. This will encourage PvE Farmers to come to PvP and this is the last thing I want to see.
Removing Glory is good, because it is acquired to easy, but I would like to see a different PvP only currency. There are players who do PvP only, and they don’t care about gold and pve experience at all – they should not be forced to do PvE.
Skills: This is the most awful idea you had so far, Anet. If new skills are implented in the game, they should be unlocked in PvP from the start. GW2’s mentality in PvP would be stepped on if this were to happen. All players should be equal in PvP, regardless for how long they have played PvP.
Ranks: Do not remove ranks. Some of us have played PvP for a long time and acquired r50+ with tournaments only. I was so proud when I finally reached bear rank after 9 months of PvP. Those ranks still have value for us. Don’t remove the only lasting thing in PvP, as someone has already mentioned in this topic.

Lastly, I have to agree to Acandis when I say: Take care of the stuff that needs taking care of first. Such as:
- Adressing the issue with Afk’s in SoloQue
- Removing Skyhammer (and maybe Spiritwatch) from SoloQue
- General Balancing. (I would also like underwater combat to be balanced (such as stomping under water), but I see that’s not the top priority right now.)

This will most likely work against GW2 ever being succesfull in E-Sports.

Having to unlock Skills is – for obvious reasons – very unkommon in (E-)Sports.
What am very curious about this. Why do you want us to unlock the skills for sPvP?

Personally the rewards don’t do much for me, so I havn’t much to offer the current conversation – but as things move on discussing the rebirth of some heling mechanics and the new game types… I’ll give it another go round.

(I say the rebirth of healing mechanics in response to a comment that new healing skills are available… I am making more than a bit of an assumption here I know, but I guess Im hoping for the best because being a pessemist gets old after a while.)

TITLE CHANGES? I am unclear if they are getting rid of the “champion” based titles. I had much joy earning Champion Slayer and wanted to work on Champion Legionnaire. Its the only title in the game I really wanted, but takes time to get. I am 20/150 matches and want to know if I have time to get it before titles are gone.

Extremely disappointed in the second half of the post, Gear and Rank changes need to be rethought. I planned on having r60 as a long term goal, now I need to sweat about “Can I get r60 before the change? Will I finish in time even if I try?” I understand that rank was essentially devalued with hotjoin heroes and skyhammer farming but this seems a bit much.

I’d like to see glory/rank stay tied into hotjoins and a new ranking system (preferably with new GW1 similar emotes) that is tied to tournament match wins, much like how Hero Rank in GW1 was tied to HA match wins.

PvP players? Well you can keep your finishers… Okay you cry so loud… you can have 1 silver per win… so if you win 10,000 matches you can now buy a legendary weapon on the trading post! AND here is the cool thing: You can use it in PvP!

Bu be at least a little bit consturctive:
- Give gems as reward for tQ and sQ matches so pvp players can buy custom arenas and skins, like pve players now.
- Keep pve and pvp seperated!
- Give the pvp players a way to show their skill! Some cool aura around the character, so that everyone can see: “WoW, this is a top 100 PvP player!”
Maybe golden aura for top 10, silver for top 100, bronze for top 500…
Then ppl can skillfully push other ppl from far point with their skillfull engi tanks and reach with this skillfull playstyle the top 100 and show their skillfull skill!

BTW: To all the players that still think their skins show how skilled they are…
You can buy your arah rush in the lfg tool… Ando the skillfull rusher just exploits some bugs to skillfull skip lupicus and all the other dungeon content! But you can show then how skillfull you are!
So keep skillfull runnin gin skillfull circles in cursed shore and frostgorge sound and skillfull kill the skillfull champions! And if you are done with that, come here again and post in this thread, that you want better drops from champions! Because this thread is for pve players that want to get more money and more possibilitys to spend their money!

I know that with the introduction of being able to move armor/weapon skins between PvP and PvE/WvW making PvPers less distinct in their ranks. One thing that I would like to see is maybe an exclusive rank (later ladder) armor set per tier that can only be acquired through PvP to allow people to show off their own level and dedication not only among PvPers but also those that just PvE/WvW (since, I would assume, these would also be transferable to PvE). I believe that this also would be an incentive to get old and new players to try PvP in order to get these exclusive PvP armor/weapon skins to use in both PvP and PvE/WvW and also hopefully enjoy PvPing too.

Yeah, I didn’t quite understand that part of the blog. The best part of GW2 is that spvp is a level playing field. Is that really going to change? Surely there was some communication error there?

sPvP and PvE does not need more separation, need more merger in fact.

removing glory and replacing with gold is the first step.

next step is to make sure that the gold rewards from sPvP is much much more than PvE / WvW.

we want the PvE / WvW players to sPvP.
this is to save the low population crisis of sPvP.

the only way to do that is to drastically increase the sPvP gold rewards.

I like this idea. I’m a PVE player that plays PVP also since the begginning, i’m not quite good, so i can said by myself that to see someone’s skin doesn’t mean that she/he is a good PVP player, I’m rank 40 and i think i still need a lot to do in PVP to improve. So, i think that the best way to have the PVP community happy is this, to introduce some PVP exclusive skins, like the dungeon exclusive skins or the WvW ones, so if u are using that skin, that means you play PVP and that you are in X-rank, place in the ladder. And with the possibillity to have skins in both PVE and PVP the community will be happy because the “you can have this armor everywhere” is still in use.

My question is about the PVE live story unique items, like the holo wings backpack. In the past i needed to choose to take that skin to PVP or to keep it in PVE… we will have the chance to have both in this change? What we will earn when we take a PVP skin to PVE, a design? something that need transmutation stones? There will be chest or something to still get armor via PVP only? (for those who don’t wanna run dungeons), What will happend with order’s armor? Will i be able to bring a vigil skin and use it with my Priory character?

The main problem changing these rewards is to be fair. I have a lot of tournament win chests and a nice stack of glory saved. I know guildies who spent their glory for the rank boxes in order to fulfill that useless lockbox..

They are going to be really kitten ed off if the situation won’t be addressed giving some sort of fairness.
It already happened with karma jugs and karma boosters, and you had to rollback. Think about it from the beginning this time, will ya?

Also in this update, the Skills and Balance team will introduce new healing skills to the game. To acquire new skills, in both PvP and PvE, players will need to spend skill points to unlock them. Unlocking the skill unlocks it for all parts of the game. Going forward newly added skills will require skill points. Existing skills will remain unlocked for PvP.

sPvP characters should have all skills unlocked.
