CDI Topic: Rewards in PvP
Um guys, there is a SERIOUS problem with gold awards in spvp. We already have guys running 3-4 scripted bots in matches (plus themselves) with no punishment in sight. It isnt a big deal right now since they just do it for fun I assume (it is hilariously effective). Are we going to allow these people, PLUS farmers come in and abuse the system? Somebody needs to tell the team in charge of that to (dessage meleted) find a solution.

The inflation is more troubling, we are adding tons of guaranteed gold to the economy and only providing gold sinks that people MIGHT use (although a lot of gold will disappear right after release). While giving spvpers some currency to throw around/make bets/give prizes is going to be great for community I think there are larger worries….
Finally I would like to echo the concern that pve/trading post players with a huge bank will be able to come in and look like top dogs simply by spending a relatively small amount of gold. This isn’t so much that I care about people using their pve skins in pvp, that’s only fair, but that heart of the mists is going to become more of a fashion shop than a pvp hub. It will be far easier to obtain ANY skin by just buying it in HotM, and I hope there are plans to combat this practice besides hoping that purely cosmetic items won’t sell.

not really. sPvP population is really low when compared against PvE and WvW. this needs to change, via drastic changes. increased gold reward is a good start.
at the moment, players play PvE and not sPvP because it is more profitable in terms of gold. they said they are removing glory and gold will be the universal currency. sPvP needs to earn lots of gold from sPvP or they will not have any spending power since everything will need to be purchased with gold in the future.

inflation is good. the gold to gems price will increase, and people will spend real dollars on gems, which is a good thing also.
since glory is going to be removed, the currency difference between sPvP and PvE should disappear as well, the only thing left that differentiates sPvP and PvE would be the fixed stats system of sPvP.
and yes, top ladder ranked hardcore competitive sPvP players (not me, i am a casual player by the way) should be filthy rich, because they can, because they deserved it, how do you think they got to the top? they got there by being better than everyone else. as gold will be the universal currency, it only makes absolute sense for the top sPvP players to control the gold economy.

does not matter. since sPvP players will have a competitive sPvP ladder to participate in, there are better unique sPvP rewards tied to that ladder, where PvE players cannot touch unless they participate in the sPvP ladder.

Unlike pve they can be very difficult to identify, especially in hot join where everybody zergs anyway. I would guess the average player plays with them without ever noticing, because when you instantly get focused 4v1 there’s not much to tip you off anyway.

Anet acknowledges that there are currently too many currencies in the game, so they probably have plans to remove most of them. I agree with this, HOWEVER, there should exist a global game-wide currency that rewards players for their merit.
In my opinion, GW2 only needs three currencies (excluding gems):
- The normal currency for the in-game market (gold);
- A time-gated currency (larels);
- A “merit-gated” currency (?);
Currently, glory, badges of honor, dungeon tokens, fractal relics and the likes are all currencies earned by “merit” and dedication, and can’t simply be brought with real-money, etc.
The game as a whole needs something like that, and so does pvp. I’d say that all the badges/ tokens/ glory/ etc should be fused into a single merit-driven currency to be used for general purposes, and the merchanics for that specific currency would have to be unlocked. For example, you would be able to buy pvp stuff with Merit from anywhere in the game, but those merchanics would only sell you anything depending on your rank/ acchievements/ ladder/ something. Likewise, the merit gotten in pvp could allow you to buy dungeon gear in Lion’s Arch, but those merchants would only sell you anything if had completed the acchievements for those specific dungeons in the first place.
Seems fair? This is certainly something that needs to be thought by Anet as a whole, and not just the pvp team. However, there NEEDS to exist a merit-driven currency, IMO.
EDIT (And to be honest, laurels is a better name for a merit-driven currency than a time-gated one)
Also in this update, the Skills and Balance team will introduce new healing skills to the game. To acquire new skills, in both PvP and PvE, players will need to spend skill points to unlock them. Unlocking the skill unlocks it for all parts of the game. Going forward newly added skills will require skill points. Existing skills will remain unlocked for PvP.

sPvP characters should have all skills unlocked.
only PvE characters need to unlock skills manually.

As a PvE player PvP had little appeal to me because I don’t care for ranks and switching to some ugly armor from my regular gear felt disconnecting. With the proposed changes I could see myself hopping on for a few matches every once in a while though, this gets my approval.
Only thing missing now is a death mach mode.
PvP needs to remain seamless, over complicating anything more will only confuse new players and deter existing ones from trying PvP. You shouldn’t have to do Anything in PvE in order to accomplish something in PvP. Period.
Actually, I’d argue that different skill unlocking rules for pve and pvp is more complicated than having the same system in both. Besides, you’ll be able to gain skill points in pvp, so you don’t need to do anything in pve to unlock it.
Ranks will be removed imho because they are unnecessary considering what PVP is supposed to be.
There is no competitive game (afaik) out there where you are rewarded for how long you play. Rewards are based on how good you play.
Let’s take LoL as example, since it is the most played competitive game: you have an account level, from 1 to 30, which only purpose is to be an entry barrier to ranked matches. And that is exactly how it should be in GW2 imho.Players need skill-based rewards, not farm-based ones.
GW1 had a Rank Emote and i’ll be sad to see GW2’s go. No one is saying hey lets not do these other changes people are more interested in seeing the ability for current Rank (Timesink to get higher as was GW1’s) and the ladder one co-exist. It’ll be something on the side personally i loved the /rank command in GW1 and while I don’t pvp much consistently in GW2, to think that it won’t be there to be earned is a tad bit saddening.
I would be curious to know if we can, in the end transfer gear between PvE to PvP:
1. Could we also transfer the beginner masks and shoulders that some classes have when first starting out such as the guardian helmet and shoulders, necros, mesmers, and eles masks, etc.
2. Will the masquerade set that we can get in either PvP and PvE be transferable also (as these two are different)?
3. Does this also mean that people can then move their legendary weapons to PvP and back again when they want?
4. Do you think that there will be some kind of gem fee to be able to make these transfers occur?
Honestly, this wouldn’t even be a problem if we had skins a bunch more skins that were exclusive to each PvP and PvE. Instead of having two paths to the same thing and people grinding their way through the path of least resistance, you’d instead have people using their special armor or weapon as a trophy for conquering a certain objective in a certain mode. Same issue with WvW and the fact that it needs something exclusive to it other than the Invader set.
The recent issue with the Flamekissed gem armor comes to mind.
If you want exclusive PvP gear then please, please, please, post that in the rewards discussion.

I’m very happy with the overall approach Anet is taking but I’m a bit concerned with the total removal of glory and making everything PvP obtainable through gold. There are players in the game who haven’t even touched PvP and have thousands upon thousands of gold stockpiles in their bank. It’s a bit discouraging to see someone like that have way better looking gear in PvP than most dedicated players.
BUT, that’s just some thoughts. I understand if gear needs to be shared, it has to be both ways. We also don’t know most of the detail yet so it’s really early to pass any verdict.
A few questions though:
1. How will the difficulty of obtaining the same gear be balanced between PvP and PvE?
2. Will there be any updates to the Win Reward Chests?
3. What will happen to the PvP crafting materials? Should we consider turning them into gear before the pvp-pve gear sharing update?
Also another concern I have is for legendaries to appear in PvP. Not because they are legendaries, but because of their chaotic over-the-top special effects which can make large PvP battles even less visual and more chaotic than it is already.

- I invested lots of time reaching r32 – How are you protecting my asset? I have no visibility whether I can make it to r40 and new finisher before changes or not.
- I don’t want to invest any time in pvp until I understand new target setting regarding titles better.
- I didn’t understand what changes in pvp conqueror actually means. If it doesn’t include calculation change from personal points into rank points I will be disappointed.
I would like:
1. PvP rewards to be equal in time to obtain versus PvE.
2. A chance to get LS items in the form of PvP skins via PvP.
3. Some skins that are unique to PvP (as far as obtaining them goes)
4. Good gold return so that we can have more PvP playerbase (attracting some PvErs who have thought about PvP but didn’t see the point).
5. No more year+ grinds for a single item/itemset.
6. More/new pvp skins, stuff we haven’t seen and doesn’t require a gemstore.
7. Class-Specific armor skin set (or at least shoulders/helm) for getting Champion achievement! Champion warlock for example would reward Champion Warlock armor.
Those are the major things I’d like.

The new changes seem absolutely amazing.
Personally, I love playing my full tank Warrior in PvP as I can hold a node by myself extremely well. Though, since I’m not really able to kill anyone, and I’m not capping any nodes I often finish at bottom of match.
There’s a few changes that I’m really looking forward to, I just hope to god they will be as exciting as they sound.
Chiming in to add 1 important caveat to my earlier statement. With the change to taking PvP gear over to PvE and vice versa, that has to be with the understanding that their needs to be some gear that is only obtained in each facet.
If the best PvP players in the world walk into PvE, you should know them from their look. The same should be said for PvErs that accomplish whatever great feat can happen in PvE, they should have a unique look that sets them apart.
Gear carrying over from one side to the next is great, having it be the same, indistinguishable gear is terrible.

idk why suddenly Anet decides to remove ranks and rank finishers frm pvp, the only reason im even doing pvp is with the motivation of rank finishers.
i thought that i could just play pvp casually due to irl work responsibilities, and slowly and steady earn myself that shark finisher

Plz do not remove rank from PvP. U have reworked on the rank system in GW1 more then 1 time. And u can rework it in GW2 as well. But removing rank system will just destroy every efford i have. I play just 3-4 runs each day pvp. Rank is the only thing i care for and the finisher. If thier will be ladder and the other things a guy like me will never be alble to have a long term goal. U are making it like GvG. Just the elite Guilds gain something for their efford like champion rank and gold silver bronze cape. And at the end everyone left gvg because their is nothing left to farm. and the elite guilds fought each other.
Give us with rank a long term goal and something we can gain bit by bit. and not through hardcore playing.
And NO i dont want to end up with a COPPER FINISHER beacause i am in the COPPER DIVISON, because I DONT HAVE THE TIME TO PLAY PVP.

In my opinion is a big mistake to delete the rank system.
It gave you some kind of real progress which was permanent.
The real reason why people left PvP wasnt the lack of rewards.
It was the lack of variety of game types.
Ranks shouldn’t be removed. Ranks are all of the motivation we have to play pvp and adding something nice and taking away something nice leaves us….where we started. Just make it a bit easier to rank. not too much but just not imgoingtofarmfor5yearstogetdragonrank hard. Also, I think we should see some high tier armor in pvp..like maybe…cultural that DOESNT take years to get? Also….dare I say it…. I kind of want a legendary in pvp. Mostly cause I could never get one in pve. and they look cool lol.
this rank removing feels like anet is addressing the complaints of all the people who stated how wrong the rank system is over the past year because it should be there to state skill to some extend and not time invested. i always thought like the complains are only there because there is no other progression system.
like it was in gw1, because the difference was to get rank points only by winning. in gw2 you get rank points no matter of winning or losing. there was the flaw.
in my opinion there is but no reason to remove the ranks entirely. this might be the wrong way to address it and may kitten many many players off.
just give a pendent to ranks by won tournaments. implement something more meaningfull. give the skilled players opportunities to show their skill.
- leave rankpoints and rankfinisher and the way to earn them. dont remove this entire system from the game. even if everyone points it worthless (skill-based) it still is a way players may progress the more they play and therefore it has a reason to stay.
- in addition get a new ranking system that is only for tournament wins. call it ‘champion rank 1 – X’ for example. give only champrank points by winning ranked matches (solo and team). give separate finishers and titles.
or maybe not finishers, maybe give the champranks a /fame animation as it was in gw1. just an idea in addition
with those options plus the season/ladder/division rewards there would be a ‘level-up’ progress for every group.
- glory for everyone: system for buying stuff (cosmetics, unlock skills etc)
- rankpoints for the casuals: the system which is already in. to unlock finishers and a way to show how much of a veteran you already are
- champion rank for the dedicated: so the more skilled players have a additional way to show how good they are. maybe get some champion vendors to trade glory for explicit champion skins
- division-rewards for the hardcore: because not everyone dedicated as much to pvp also has the time to do it. a possible place for legendaries? a wall of fame. make your character glow gold for being top of first division. let your awesomeness shine through the mists.
i am no hardcore player and don’t see myself as that skilled to truly compete in upper divisions. i play for the fun and really love to pvp. i followed the pvp scene for the past year and think the above 4-point-list would give great incentive for all kinds of players because somehow everybody has some kind of progression to work on.

Need a way to use the old glory boosters or convert them to some other stuff. I already have 250 at the locker and some at inventory. Because I only play 3 matches a day for achievements I always forget to use them… and then I get 1 more and more and more. And sometimes they also dropped from chests.
If you remove glory let us convert them to some other items. A little bit karma maybe or luck.

Hi, my toughts about the changes here I’ve been playing pvp since start of the open Beta and haven’t stopped since.
Ladder
What this game needed since start. But it should NOT be playerbased. GW2 needs a Guild based ladder. (make so that at least 3/5 have to be from the guild, and you can only play for a guild if you are in it for 2 weeks or something, to avoid smurfing. But that is another theme to discuss)
Removing Rank and glory
I personally think this is a BAD idea. It just doesn’t bring anything positiv. Why not keep both? Give us glory AND gold. I think a player needs something who shows, how much time he invested in this gamemode, which a ladderspot just doesn’t show correctly. Let’s say I have been a top 10 player for 5 months, one of the best. Now I stop playing and drop out of the ladder. I come back and have absolutely nothing to show my skill again (you know how I mean it).
Players need:
- A Ladder to indicate “I am better than you”
- A PERSONAL rank system to indicate “I played more than you and have a bigger e-kitten”
I don’t care about gloryfarmers. I personally like to play for the gloryfinisher (and wanted to get phoenix someday.. currently r61). But I also like to see me having a bigger number than others.
So I think rank should stay as something complementary.
I honestly would play less, if I woulnd’t get rank points!
So I would recommend thinking of something in addition (rather not removing everything we worked for..) but give us gold in addition to glory.
Armors
This is great. BUT it also removes one of the only indicators of better players (gloryfarmers left aside…). Now I see someone with flame armor “oh he is r50+”. Later on EVERYONE has it.
That’s another reason why I think rank should STAY as a system that indicates the invested time in this mode.

Also i would like to see unique pvp armors that can be transformed to PvE as well. An armor (better more for different preferences), to show in all game modes what you have achived in PvP. This would be a reward, that i would like AND if would FEEL rewarding.
You also finaly have to do something about the skyhammer farmers… Remove their rank or give everyone else the same amount the “highest” skyhammer farmer has farmed in ADDITION to his/her current rank/glorry. Would you are doing right now (NOTHING) gives a very wrong signal to everyone, who has not abused that. I feel like an idiot for not having abused ANY of the uncounted bugs you manage to put in the game… (No blame… everyone does mistakes, but fix them faster and remove the effects they have/ban the abusers). If you make it beneficial to abuse every bug, everyone else will start abusing too! I’m not only talking about pvp here, same for pve… until no you have not managed to fix the possibility to skip lupicus, which is exploited by hundreds of arah rushers… they make more money than most of the forum users here can imagine… we are talking about 10 legendary weapons and more… and anet is doing nothing about it! And this is REALLY disapointing.
PLZ PLZ dont remove rank and glory, this is all the pvp veterans can show of… if you remove this we have no possibility to show that we are veterans. Removing this would be a reason to quit the game entirely and forever. You just remove everything we have achived? WTF!
Dont replace glory by gold, instead make glory a meaningfull currency, give us cool stuff we can buy for it!
Transmute the glory boosts into glory/ rank consumables… Everyone bunkers them, just make them usefull… And if you are doing this, plz keep my 100+ tiger finishers in mind… they are compleately wothless… i can do nothing with them!
I also dont like the idea that pve players can get their armors into pvp, as long as we have nothing different to show off (unique pvp skins). Dont get me wrong i got almost 17k ap and i am playing every game mode… so i can equip my pve armors in pvp… i just dont think you should make the pvp players feel like jerks with cof armor, which they are proud of beeing a “crap” armor compared to the nice t3 armors from the pve players.. thats UNFAIR! Also a reason to quit…

Speed the things up if you dont want to loose more and more players! It is unacceptable that you guys need ages for every little fix…! What about the rank barrier for soloQ? YOU ARE DOING NOTHING HERE! It is one if (rank < 20) then {hide the join button}. I did your work in 1 minute! What takes you so long? QA? (Don’t say yes or i start counting the fractal bugs that ruined fractals for me… TY for that btw… another good reason to quit…)

First 2 i agree with, the rest no. Maybe they can ban people that abused skyhammer but an easy fix to the whole glory to skill conversion to tradable items can be fixed by making those skills and tradeable items account bound instead.

Changes seem pretty cool. Going to have to go ahead and say that being able to buy everything on day one of this change with gold is a huge step in the wrong direction if that’s what you intend. Some pvp only rewards would be awesome! Someone mentioned capes, and if those carried over into pve that would be a pretty cool way of showing off your characters time investment.
I believe this is such an important thing, that it should go without saying, but here it is anyways.
PvP exclusive armor and weapons!
- If those dirty pve’rs get to bring in their cultural armor, or Twilight Arbor armor into pvp, then we pvpers deserve exclusive armor to show that we in fact ARE pvpers. It would be nice if this armor was also able to transfer to WvW/pve. But only obtainable through significant pvping. (Perhaps rank 40)
Pvp legendaries!
- I have long since come to terms that I will never get a legendary through pve. I just don’t play it enough, and when I do, all the money goes to WvW. I don’t even care if these are only usable in pvp. Having them transfer would be nice, but unecessary.
- It would be nice if they looked different from pve legendaries, so if they do transfer to pve, people will see the skin and know that you’re a pvper.

your answer is somehow paradox. at one point u want inflict all other player cause some abuse by changing the items account-bound. on the other hand u dont want to inflict other players with updates. seems u dont understand that as example hambow war is broken op in wvw too and in pve it doesnt matter that much. btw its the job of the balanceteam to find a solution or split skills that inflict several parts of the game different. but its not acceptable to wait several months and see how unbalanced the competive part of the game is. so i dont see any reason against more frequent balancing updates only poor balancing in your argumentation against it.
yes give pvp player gold for previous wins would relate in some inflation but that would be only fair considering the poor state of pvp for a year and how little gold pvp players have accumlated. on the same time u give pvp players gold u also has a new market, cause now the pvp player can equip and level his chars for alternate parts of the game to enjoy like wvw. so speaking of my perspective. if i would get gold for prevoius wins i would by stuff from trading post to equip my chars. i dont see anything whats wrong with that. on the other hand i could also use my gold to buy the pvp armors i like and was playing to for nearly a year and a pve-hero now gets direct from start cause he has more gold to spend. dont u think all players should be on a equal step esp the pvp players regarding pvp armor? do u think its fair that a pve-players come to pvp with his t3 armor and i need to win xxx amount of tourney first to get the gold to buy the same armor cause t3 is rank 60+ atm?

Unlockable stats for the PvP armors and weapons when you are in PvE/wvw. Like how legendary stats work.
Should be a tiered unlock. You win a bunch of arena matches and you unlock helm stats for a certain skin…
Backpack and jewels are out of this. If you want max stats on those you should grind PvE.

I would like pvp exclusive gear that could be taken out into the pve/wvw world. It’d be nice to have people wonder where I got the cool looking gear and perhaps bring more population into the arenas.

I have talked about this before too. We have been putting hundreds and some people thousands of hours into trying to get the dragon finisher. We knew it would take years. We have already put forth a year and a half’s worth of effort and now we have no way of getting to it ever? For a lot of us it’s the rank that matters. For others we were working on the rank emote.
I will repeat what I said earlier for emphasis: I am at my Tiger Emote. I am working toward at least my Phoenix. Many people are MUCH further along than me but I have invested hundreds of hours into PvP just to try and get that Phoenix emote.
This is akin to you guys saying you are going to remove Legendaries except for the people that already have them. That’s what this is to the PvP community. It’s like some guy doing map completion, getting all his gifts and precursor and being some T6 mats short and then you take away the ability to make Legendaries. The only part that is different is that the time investment for sPvP emotes and ranks is on a MUCH larger scale. Please reconsider locking the rank emotes. In my opinion it is a terrible waste of so many people’s efforts and time.
If anet is rly reading this please…The answer to fix pvp is much simpler than what you guys are trying to do…

New game format (arena, gvg…Something different)
More unique stuff to dedicated pvp players, can be seasons….
We just need THIS not some deus ex machine crap to take something precious to some players and bring others that will leave the pvp after 2 weeks, and just go back to farm…Because your changes just gonna transform our pvp in a farmville!

-PvP Legends – *no conversion" pve→pvp. last thing we need is tons of Twillights running around. Make em achievable ONLY though pvp. O N L Y.

I do not think removing existing content and rewards like rank and their finishers is warranted. Some people like them and they serve as extremely long term goals that don’t impact gameplay in the least and can’t even be seen until you get stomped. My problem with ranks was how so many gear pieces were locked behind them. Since you guys seem to be addressing this I do think removing them is worth the trouble.
I additionally share the concerns others have expressed towards unlocking PvP skills with skill points. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Players who play PvE and WvW have tons of skill points, while players that do nothing but PvP have none or few. What’s the reasoning in adding this sink for PvPers in the first place? Is that the whole point? As a gold sink? Why bother removing glory and substituting it with gold, then, if you might fear inflation without money sinks?
It also seems to go against the entire spirit of PvP – that a brand new player can go into sPvP and still have every choice available to him without any disadvantage, with skill and skill alone as his only handicap.
A good reward that could go along nicely with ladders would be profession specific gear sets that you could only earn in spvp. A nice set for each class that goes along nicely with the overall theme of the profession. For instance, the elementalist set could look sick with some flashy looking flames/elemental type set. Mesmers could have a dark purple aura and look like illusionists. Engineers set would look like an engineer etc. but all the gear has to look nice for each profession. It has to be really really crazy and gear that people will want to use in all parts of the game. Something that if you see someone roaming with in wvw, you will know they are a top tier player on the spvp ladder (when we get ladders that is).
Tie this to rating on the ladder/leaderboard so only the skilled players will be able to get it. Different, less graphic but still class themed sets could be made for lower ranked players so casuals would still have rewards to aim for. If the gear is sick and can be used in pve, AND we get gold rewards for solo queue/tpvp then I can see a lot of pve players getting into pvp which is exactly what pvp needs.
I feel using different classes as themes could really help the artists get creative with these sets. You could just make gear specific to spvp, but I feel having it resemble specific professions would really help it stand out and be recognizable. Limit the sets to only be used on the profession it is designed for, but allow players who have the preferred rating to buy any set that they want.

Achievements for leaderboard position could be nice too, like 100 achievement points for getting into the top 100 in team queue.
Yee i don’t understand why i always have to go through the pve tutorial if i just want to play some spvp tournements with a new created char.
I think gold for tournement wins and some tomes to lvl up your character sounds nice, also unlocking dungeon skins through pvp without a 2 years grind sounds awzum to me aswell,… but in all seriousness if you r not willing to allow me to progress towards my r60 shark finisher I will neva notice those changes at all…

Why retire rank finishers. What drove me to pvp in the first place was the possibility of one day reaching that elusive dragon and being able to spam it proudly on the corpses of enemies. Now you’re binding that to a ladder which makes it impossible for everyone to have a chance of attaining it, and for those that do it only lasts until someone knocks them off. Why not keep ranks as they are and also implement the new ladder with ladder specific finishers.
Replacing glory with gold. I don’t see the need for it, sure it will be nice to sometimes win an insignificantly small amount of coin instead of glory which we use to trade in for boxes for skins and dyes… oh wait no it wouldn’t. That being said what’s stopping you from keeping glory and also having gold as an alternative method of currency.
Keeping pvp/pve armor and weapons separate was a great idea, it’s a shame to see that go.
This game has been changing a lot recently, and I’m not sure it’s for the better. That’s my opinion but it’s likely I won’t continue playing depending on the upcoming changes over the next few months. I’m just one person though, so who cares. Fudge me right?
when/ IF glory is removed (it’s not completely decided yet as that’s still being developed) then I say that some new pvp currency should be implemented next to earning gold from matches. For example, the new currency/rank might be called something like Honor, or Prestige, or Reputation, etc. Then there might be new titles to be earned for how much of the new rank or currency you gain in Pvp.
I also liked the Daily Pvp stats/achievements like: Assaulter, Defender, Neutralizer, Capturer, Teammate revivals. and some of the map specific stats: Cannon shooter, Communer, Trebuchet hits, Trebuchet destroyer/repairer, Orbs captured, NPC’s/Lord Killed, Forest Creatures killed. I really love those stats and I’d like to see those implemented as actually achievements with tiers/titles in the future because the Pvp Conqueror achievements right now are kind of boring/bland, but the titles you can earn are pretty cool.
