DnT tourney comp speculation.
Part-time Kittenposter
I think the most common comp so far is 1 war, 2 eles, thief and guardian. I was kinda expecting EVERY comp to be that but there has been some variations from it.
I expect to see 1 Warrior, 2 Elementalists, 1 thief and a Guardian and Mesmer as 5th and 6th members of all teams that would be used depending on which path is drawn.
The other 4 positions are pretty much a lock in my mind, don’t really see people going away from that.
Proper “Meta” groups can complete dungeons without dying, and can complete them fast. If you’re going to be competitive, why vary from this setup?
Maybe more risk than cleric face tanking every dungeon, but there’s significant reward.
they ought to make it no duplicate classes allowed. it will create better variety
If they use the standard tactics and stream it, I wonder how this’ll make GW2 look to the casual viewer.

The casual viewer would not comprehend anything that was going on and would be left thinking “Man, this looks pathetically easy…” but the community is not aiming to please the casual viewer, we aim to prove that PvE can generate considerable interest as well and deserves to be given some love by the devs and not overlooked as a bit of stale content.
Everyone that will watch this tourney will be instrumental in helping us, as a community, secure a prosperous future for the content we love which is PvE.

I’ll try to watch too. With any luck the combination of generating interest in PvE, and the negative feedback to the meta’s lack of spectacle together would make the devs go “okay, we need to start working on this” at least them working to fix it would be ideal. I shrudder thinking about what they’d say about gw2 pve on a podcast like Cooptional. They’re already needlessly harsh on mmos as it is.

Sorry, had to be said!

And how do you think gw2 pvp tourneys look to a casual viewer? Teamfights are clusterkitten, everyone plays an asura making it even bigger clusterkitten and even if one team can win most of the fights they can still lose cause of capping points mechanics. Moreover, commentators usually pay attention to only one part of the map making you miss a lot of action.

At least a clusterkitten is more impressive looking than a stack. Spectacle is what’s going to make people who stumble upon the stream want to play this game, and let’s face it, the only thing pretty about stacking against a wall is the big numbers only the players will be seeing. To the layman, you’ll look like your cheesing it, which will reflect negatively on the game as a whole.

When you watch any teamfight, it’s spamming AoEs on points with little asura in-between. If you can watch it and understand what’s going on with post processing effects turned on, I can only congratulate you. For me there’s no difference between teamfights in pvp and stacking in pve/wvw – all being an unwatchable clusterkitten.

It will be up to myself and whoever shoutcasts with me to do a good job of describing what the teams are trying/likely to do at each encounter and the potential risks of it.
That way it instead of it being “a stack of particle effects and explosions and a dead boss” it will be “a conjured frost bow #5 to freeze the boss while the rest of the team uses Ice Storm; but if the boss gets his AOE off before the #5 the team could wipe.”

The meta is changing at an alarming rate!
With the no rez rule of the tourney in place, what kind of team comps and strategies do you expect to see in the tourney. The same old meta or teams taking a bit more defense as some assurance?
We took a guardian, thats more defense than we usually have.
Game over, yo.
DnT should definitely compete even if they organize this tourney. Their group composition should be like two rangers, a necromancer, an engineer and a mesmer.
For guangs sake.
Game over, yo.
pls limit 1 per class, so not everyone runs literally the same meta comp
Why the hate for meta comp?

Last i checked there was no such rule in tpvp to prevent meta comps. So please dont be silly and suggest such a thing.
I think most MMO gamers understand GW2 is pretty much a clusterkitten of spamming skills with as little coordination as possible and still be able to get the “job” in decent timing. This game is a boring DPS race no matter what, with a meta it’s just a boring fast DPS race. I don’t think many people care about this stupid tournament that proves nothing other than I have gud muscle memory.

So, 1 ele, 1 war, 1 mes, 1 guard, 1 thief is more diverse than 2 ele, 1war, 1 guard, 1 thief, and mesmer as alternate?
I can understand the concern, but I don’t see your suggestion as something that would actually achieve the goal you seem to want.
In fact the allowance of 2 of one profession will open it up to more diverse builds. One group may value that 2nd ele over a mesmer for a path, where another might feel the quickness/CC/reflects from the mesmer could get them a safer/faster win. Your suggestion pigeon holes everyone into one group composition for optimization.
ok how about only ranger, engi, necro allowed
edit: ded game
Several teams have already included a ranger and/or an engineer in their comp already.
No one runs comps like that on a daily basis and is a pointless artificial limitation that makes compositions even more static than your previous ideas.
I’m looking forward to watching everyone else’s runs. My usual dungeon group gets it done pretty quickly but we’re no where near competition level. One run we popped every single one of Malrona’s egg sacs and killed every single spider just for fun. My friend and I took 3 hours to kill all of the spiders (just two of us). We’ve gotten better at dungeons since then but still takes us longer than zerk only speed clears….we take anyone that wants to come with us. We do it for fun & the gold.
But yeah, so want to watch the competition streams.
@Tree: Good luck with shoutcasting.

I agree, you should get a team together and each bag yourselves 150g and 2000 gems since gw2 pve is just faceroll ^^
I bet he’s probably “busy” that day, but he’ll totally watch.
Sandy is also interested in shoutcasting. Please, let him do it! The mass needs more Sanderstep material.

>_> its more that I expect myself to be involved in later organisation and therefore will likely be put in such a position as organisers can’t compete :c

When the UFC was just starting to become popular, a lot of laymen tuned in and were confused by it.
“Why are they just moving around, shouldn’t they be slugging it out?”
“Why are those two near naked men hugging and rolling around on the ground? That’s not fighting!”
But as time progressed, people learned to pick out the nuances and true skill these athletes had when combatting each other. I believe the same can be said here. Where some people see chaos, others can pick out a guardian who has a perfect aegis rotation, or the complementary build of two eles, or whatever.
While you may think people won’t care, I believe the opposite. I think that this tournament has a lot of potential, and all that remains to be seen is how that potential is executed.
I also think it cool that Tree(Nike) will be Joe Rogan.
I most definitely have some negative things to say about the PvE of this game, too.
But, I don’t think bitterly lashing out at a community effort is the right way to express that feeling.
You don’t have to support the content, to support the community.

Can’t wait to see your team compete. I’m sure you’ll rock our world with your clusterkitten of spamming skills with as little coordination as possible.

Oh snap what a Bright burn that was.
:D
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.

Yes, because winning the tournament proves that GW2 is a boring DPS race. Having the tournament in the first place is what proves GW2 is a boring DPS race. Keep thinking you’re pro for playing the meta, maybe some day it’ll be true.

Depends on which path they choose really. If they choose AC3 or something, yeah, not much fun watching that because it’s a stack n spank where the only thing to consider is how fast can I pull the mobs as there’s pretty much 0 chance of failure, but if they choose say, Arah P4, then we might see something interesting.
but if they choose say, Arah P4, then we might see something interesting.
Yeah, 5 minutes of ranging Melandru sure sounds super interesting. Especially seeing how melee tactics involve quite a bit of risk, and people don’t really want to have people die in that path. 4 manning Grenth is easy, 3 manning becomes obnoxious and 2 manning is going to be a serious pain in the kitten . Not so much because it’s hard to do the Wraith (Wethospu solo’ed it, so technically it’s possible, but I think it’s safe to say not everyone is Wethospu) but because dodging the lifesteal is going to get harder and harder once you’ve got less people.

so… its easy but you dont want to bag yourself a free 150g and 2000 gems because … well, what reason?
what kind of person turns down free money?

That’s the whole point. There’s a risk reward consideration there. You can choose to take risk, and have a chance to get ahead of the other team, or choose to play safe, and hope the other team screws up.
That doesn’t exist in say, AC3, because apart from maybe the first spider pull, there is just the one speedrun tactic, and zero risk of death.
Besides, there’s no excitement in watching AC3. You know how it’s gonna play out, no one’s gonna screw up, and it’s a dungeon you’ve played two billion times already. It’s about exciting to watch as watching your own back hand.

I wasn’t having a stab at you, I was having a stab at Arah p4 and the fact that forced ranging and time gating at Grenth is horrible design.
Same goes for AC p3. The time gating at the burrows makes the path pretty terrible to me.
That said, I hardly doubt anyone is going to pick AC p3 as their chosen path, since there isn’t really much you can do to get an edge over your opponent.
