IGN on the new masteries

But 3 legendaries?
…
Legendaries take work, it sounds like they’re making them far more intricate with not only unique legendaries but multiple unique precursor levels. So, they’re only promising 3, and will continue working on more to release as time goes on. Seems reasonable to me.
Three is fine, as long as the quality is up to Kekai Kotaki’s level – basically the reason I adore GW2 legendary weapons so much.
the ability to summon challenging five-person bosses with unique loot tables
This sounded really promising, until I remembered that these “challenging five person” bosses will most likely be in the open world and end up on the route of a zergtrain.
More “run in circles with 60 other players mashing 1 to ‘earn’ shineys” content confirmed?
I suppose they are instanced, other wise, it’s redundant to mention “five-person bosses”. We’ll see.

Depends. If Wyvern showed us anything it’s that they can link a smaller instance off a larger one. If summoning these things doesn’t just summon it, but create a portal to a new area where these 5 man bosses are, creating pseudo instances that can be joined until the cap of 5… could be pretty cool. A more natural feeling, you’re running around doing your stuff, boom open up a portal, even solo other players could potentially join you just by chance….
but, that’s being hopeful, but point is it’s possible, lets just pray it happens that way but who am I kidding?

I read it as “tuned for 5 players.” But it’s speculation. You’re right, we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe a dev will pop up on this thread to clarify?
lel…idk, it happened on the static FotM thread…Are things changing? Change is good!
But unexpected and unlikely sadpanda.

TBH, that has been in the game since day one. Much of the e.g. personal story episodes take place in instanced regions of the open world map.
It’s been an annoyance of mine, because it was a fun guild activity to take on world bosses / temples / etc. as a guild, but we haven’t been able to do this since megaservers, and it was difficult to do beforehand due to randoms scaling things up and not coordinating.
Employing that existing technology to allow the challenging open-world events to be instanced for a party/guild would have been great. They could have. They should have. But instead we got the NPE.

Agreed, with all points.
True, may have been able to do this all along, but maybe they start actually utilizing it effectively? And weren’t PS instances linked to the group?
They were party instanced, but that’s still an instance. It would take some work to modify the system to allow a larger number of players in, but not as much as, say, rebuilding the Lion’s Arch map geometry twice from scratch.
Someone called it, exclusive HoT buffs and foods to allow progress in high tier content. CD resets and exclusive infusions anyone? Hope that wont be too bad.
But 3 legendaries?
…
Keep in mind that the new precursors will be acquired through a lengthy “scavenger hunt” style of collection achievement, and having to create that for every single new precursor will take a great amount of time.
Also note that they said they will be releasing more new legendaries as the story progresses.

Yeah I forgot about all that stuff, I just saw only 3 and went ._.

Aren’t they supposed to be starting out replacing the joke legendaries like the Moot and Quip?
3 new legendaries = 2 surfboard greatswords that can be combined into a 3rd surfboard.
ArenaNet was keen to emphasise more Mastery Lines will be added in future patches, but it estimates collecting all 39 Masteries coming at launch will likely take players as long as levelling from 1-80. The good news is the system is account-wide, meaning once they’ve been earned on one character you’ll have them on them all.
So it’ll only take a week to get all the masteries? That’s how long it took a lot of people when the game first launched to make 80 without craft leveling, swapping at end of dungeons, tomes, etc.

Also, I hope that collecting all of the masteries will actually take a little longer than originally leveling from 1 – 80, unless they are able to introduce new masteries a lot faster than when they expect players to be completing the original 7 masteries.
Not sure where this info came from on it taking the same amount of time as getting from levels 1-80 -> but simply put it’s incorrect.
A) We haven’t decided how long it’ll take to earn them all, and are doing beta weekends to help decide a good time length.
B) Currently as timed in game today, it would take a good deal longer than that in total game hours to earn all the mastery lines.
Ultimately – check it out this weekend and let us know what you think!

Thanks. IGN writer must have misheard something.

And we all know how that goes… cough fractals cough
