What is this “any class can do just as well if played properly” argument?
Truth is that rangers, necros and engis are worse than other professions.
What’s so painful on that, so that people continuously bring up such arguments. Back to gw1 I never see such complaints. Noone ever gets to the idea of arguing that it isn’t paragons, monks, warriors, dervishes and assassins that are not used in uw because of being bad in that content but rather the players playing improperly. Alright, most of those professions have uses in other sc’s or at least in urgoz/deep.

Well lets not generalize pls.

Mesmers can achieve massive dmg, even enough to get to the top. But to achieve that, they need 3 phantasm up. So they have the potential to be really good against boss, they are just not that good against trash mobs and their dps suffer A LOT if the player is not good. On the other hand, a Necromancer will never reach high dps, even if they are the best.

Slight thread necro, but given the announced ranger updates from last friday, and I know that we haven’t heard anything about 6 of the classes. But, assuming they go through as is, and all other 6 classes stayed the same does this change the “maths” here.

The (approximately) 10% damage boost on a sword ranger, plus the additional benefits from the signets as good (untraited) options.

Also, a slightly different question but are the greatsword buffs significant enough to put it on par with Sword, or is it still a subpar weapon set?

I’m assuming that its impossible to know without the eventual factual numbers but my expectation is that:

With the 10% damage buff, sword rangers will be a viable, on par option for dungeons and not be a net DPS loss.

Im expecting that we will see alot more greatsword rangers, however they still won’t be up to the DPS of a sword ranger. I also think that GS ranger cannot maintain cripple as effectively as sword ranger, and therefore the 100% cripple uptime won’t be a reasonable assumption on GS

It depends, most if not all those numbers assume 100% uptime on the bonuses and a 30s fight. Hunter’s Tactic’s is kinda a nuisance to proc when target is walled, same thing as trying to strafe while auto attacking. Extended fights also force you to dodge so you lose steady focus.

For really short fights(walled, FGS bosses etc.) SoTW + QZ(6/5/0/3/0) will be a significant factor pulling ranger DPS up. I find that Ranger really shines in CoE and AC because of this(non projectile heavy short fights then skip/time gate to get SoTW and QZ off cooldown plus Remorseless on trash).

For pugging where you don’t expect others in the party to be packing good dps you can even skip Nature Magic altogether(4/5/5/0/0, group DPS calculator seems to favor this build too) but then again as the fight lasts longer you may lose Steady Focus and/or Peak Strength.
