Title says it all. The “private” is so that people won’t have be embarrassed about their low DPS: only you see it, and it can’t be linked in chat.

I’d like to know in a real world situation if my build/rotation for this or that fight is better or worse than my other build/rotation — this would be a nice QoL feature for that purpose.

That would be very nice indeed to try different builds and see which makes the best, and see how you’re doing according to which rotation etc …
But I doubt it would be implemented.

If they didn’t want to release this because it could lead to different dps meters, maybe they could make training dummies that you could “duel” and they would give a dps report after 1 min.

Well, the meter would be “private” so no one else would be able to see or judge.

However, I agree the casual carebears would go up in arms because how dare a DPS meter show objectively (even privately) how bad their scepter/rifle/bow/staff builds are!

Everquest 2 had something like this. It was a “training wall” in the middle of a jungle zone that you could go practice and parse on. After you destroyed it, it’d rebuild after a few mins (I think it was around 5 or 10).

That was one of my most memorable experiences in that game. There would always be a crowd of people there watching whoever was training on the wall or waiting next in line. It was very social and fun and it was a friendly, competitive atmosphere.

Yes, even EQ2 had its share of casual carebears but they didn’t care about such “elitist” things such as DPS parsing so they’d stick to the major cities where they’d spend their time roleplaying, crafting or decorating their homes or guild halls. They were nice enough to not cry about game features that they were neither interested in nor affected by.

most of the time I’ve raised the point in dungeons or really anywhere, I hear an answer something along the line of ‘I don’t need to do dps, I heal the group and keep everybody alive’ – be it staffguards or eles staying in water (without a conjure ofc) etc.

so for all those people, which I’d put in the casual group, a DPS meter would in no way be a problem, as they don’t see dps as their goal and thus, it wouldn’t disturb their gameplay at all as far as I understand.

I think the negative impact on most players would probably be minimal (yes, the very vocal ones would cry rivers in the forums, as always with any new feature/balance patch).

I’d really like some form of dps meter, but please, make it in a zone where I can freely change traits to personalize a decent stolen build around my needs (i.e. for anything except dungeons I often forego the best build to get easier access to swiftness).

if that’s not feasible, a change to training dummies would be great – accepting conditions and behaving like a real enemy plus a timer how long it took to destroy would help a ton.

or, maybe, make damage calculation, trait bonuses etc, transparent enough theorycrafting actually works without all the guessing ;-)

It’s like,
I know by RPG standards something like that is pretty normal. But by Action game standards, it’s often used to derogatorily reference RPG combat.

Spending dev time and energy to implement something like this would basically be tantamount to a public admission that the action-game elements…just…aren’t…working out. Which, true or not, is not something I’d ever suspect a company to admit to.

But hey,
in WoW Meters were always something the playerbase themselves created. I can’t imagine why you couldn’t try to mobilize our more programmatically savvy ranks into a nice little side project.

LOL true. In any case, the private/no chat linking is more to prevent other party members from demanding to see your DPS — there’d be enough rage resulting from that to make this an instant no-go. But just keeping it private, for your own personal use, sounds reasonable to me.

Perhaps a clever approach to this would be to make it toggle-able. Add in DPS meter along with some other ones that would appease the casuals. They can tout their toughness meters or healing meters and have some arbitrary number by their name so they don’t feel inadequate.

I think that would be the best way to go about implementing this because I agree that it would be an awesome addition to the game. The ATK has always been a trash indicator and external calculators can be a hassle especially in dealing with all the multiplicative effects.

…nah.

It’s not like I’d have a problem with this being released but it seems so unorthodox. For me personally, this doesn’t matter. I can’t imagine the majority of the game’s population caring because FILTHYCASUALS.

On another note, I’d much rather them do more significant things like fixing bugs / exploits for a change instead of doing a half-kitten job at it months later.

Maybe we should have a public DPS meter and a public healing meter. At the end of every path we can see how much damage and how much healing each person did and then MAYBE we can finally get people to see that their shout heal/cleric healing guard builds are useless in a game where you are responsible for your own healing and damage mitigation.

You people do realize that the reason this game is still alive is because of the casuals you’re bashing right?
I mean GW2 is not a hardcore mmo, the hardest fight in the game is a monster that slightly skillful people can solo under like what, 3 minutes?
I’m pretty sure ANet is going to listen the the filthy carebears considering they probably out scale you guys in numbers 1000 to 1.

But setting that aside, I don’t think those “filthy” carebears would mind a private dps meter like the one we had in GW1.
Also since we had that in GW1 it’s highly unlikely to have it in GW2 considering it’s a completely different game. Not to mention a great number of the GW1 fights were a lot more harder.

I’m personally getting tired of this stuff. I mean it’s like having a group of alchoolists consider themselves superior to a group of heavy smokers. You’ll both eventually die you know.

No, it’s a bunch of health-saavy, long-distance runners (optimum, “meta”) getting crapped on by couch potato, Amerifats (I eat how I want) for asking to have an odometer on a treadmill (that the couch potatoes won’t even use).

Comparing varieties of self-impairment to self-improvement by making them both analogous with negative conditions is a bit misdirected.

How about no ?
Public DPS meter/Healing meter is kitten, it SHOULD NOT and has NO PLACE AT ALL in GW2.
Public information about that would be terribad and ruin the game so NO NO NO as the dredge say.
We are only talking about private one with absolutely NO WAY to broadcast and inform about it.

Why would a public DPS meter be bad? People with bad dps won’t get into parties like “full offensive only, gear & traitcheck” anyway, a public dps meter would simply filter out liars. And anyone who doesn’t care about how much dps he deals wouldn’t mind the dps meter anyway. So in my opinion if there is a better thing than a private dps meter that could be added to gw2, it’s a public one.

It would only make the people mad who join the wrong groups, which your right, is a lot of people. Why can’t the people who want to play in meta only groups have something to help filter out the bads so they can’t lie anymore?

Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree, but this explanation will not work with the baddies, liars and play-how-I-want crowd.

It is interesting that they insist on playing how they want and look down their noses at people who optimize and follow META for being “boring, soul-less cookie cutters”, but they still expect to sneak into your groups and be carried. At least on a subconscious level, they all agree – even if they’d never admit it out loud – that their playstyle is just plain inferior in terms of getting things done and clearing content in a timely fashion, but they refuse to learn, change or adapt. This is why they refuse to simply just group with other like-minded people, and instead, try and sneak into “zerker only” groups.

Thus, having a DPS meter will filter them out and end their habit of getting carried by the cookie cutters, so of course, they are against public DPS meters.

I have no issue with the true I-play-how-I-want crowd. They do whatever they want, and don’t bother anyone else. They genuinely don’t care about DPS and have fun running around and exploring the open world, doing Living Story, etc, and I have no problems with them. The worst are the dishonest people who want the best of both worlds: they wish to keep their inferior builds and expect to be carried by the zerkers.

Let’s not derail this by talking about public DPS meters… Anet will never ever even consider doing a public DPS meter.

A private DPS meter, however, has far less potential for controversy — that together with the fact that (aside from the UI), the code should be easy, means there’s a bigger than zero chance that this could be implemented.

looks cool. I remember a while back someone created a rough DPS meter but many people were afraid to use it because they were afraid of being accused of botting (or something similar).

It’s great that people are writing their own DPS meters, but the fact is that Anet/gw2 by default has access to all damage information and thus Anet can write a DPS meter with little work. It’s sad that they’ll likely never do it.

Any dps meter is only really value if you can make ready comparisons. “Cool, I did 600 dps that fight! Is that good?” However I don’t like the idea of someone who doesn’t contribute to might fields, fury or damage mitigation giving someone who does all that a hard time, because the only information they understand is the dps meter. So yes, private is the way to go.

Which means either a practice dummy with a useful summary, where different weapon styles and builds can be compared against each other. One I would like to see is a breakdown at the end of a dungeon of your personal contribution as a percentage of overall damage. “Hmm, only 16% of party damage against the final boss. Time to up my game.” This way there is no finger pointing from anyone else, but it does let people know if they are being carried.

Exactly, priorities, guys! They rather bring out more zerg “content” than doing real fixes to the game or adding basic features any mmo should have which would take effort of a few minutes to code. Ohwait, there do already programs like this exist, they would just have to implement it into the GUI.
