So they just posted in the site about the new class revenant and new boon, conditon and cc.

The new CC is Taunt.

Taunt (Status Effect)
“Involuntarily attack foes.”
We have many different status effects in Guild Wars 2 that accomplish a variety of goals, such as knockdown, knockback, and daze. In this expansion, we wanted to open up gameplay options using taunt. Taunt will be used to both reposition foes and change your foes’ targets. For example, when used on players, it will force the taunted player to run at their target with their skill bar locked—minus stun breakers—and only use their autoattack skill to attack. This gives us the opportunity to use taunt in multiple ways, not just as a player skill, but also as a tool to create interesting creature encounters that utilize this taunt effect against players.

Is it Anet way to implement a tanks in gw2? I support the idea of having a tank. More possibilites for more complex content and dungeons. They already did some nerfs to pure dps in the past. Keep going Anet.

I am not talking about optimal. I am talking about exist or not in the game. Healers are lame but they exist. Tanks in the other do not because with no aggro/taunt active control they do not exist.

Even if Taunt becomes a legitimate strategy, the tank character is still going to be running DPS gear to contribute the most DPS while kiting and max-range attacking the taunted foes. It is a very interesting CC for sure, but I don’t think it’ll change a lot.

As a forum specialist do you have access to special information that normal players don’t?

We don’t know how the new content is gonna be. Maybe they make something that you can’t complete with old dungeons’s meta. Like in spvp the meta for conquest will not the be same for Stronghold.

It counts as a CC. Meaning it will be stopped by Defiant. We can safely assume Deep Freeze will be a better use of your CC in pve. This might be good for some trash mobs you need to gather up and cant LOS for some reason.

I can see some uses of forcing the mobs into a LOS spot. The best example would probably be SE p3 clown car where you taunt all of the dredges into the low ceiling area so their bombs can’t hurt your team or you taunt and use icebow 4 at the same time for trash groups that you have to fight.

My guess: mobs will move out of AOEs and so you’ll need AOE taunts to keep them in.

Also, we’re going to see this abused by mobs/bosses.

Anet loves chaining CCs on players in open world content. So expect to see 2 second taunts with 1 second recharge from some world boss.

While CCs are good in moderation, players don’t like it when they have no control over their character for long periods of time.

Why bother taunting? If they’re designed to run out of AoEs just bring 3-4 staff eles and 1-2 hammer guardians.

Huehuehue while the enemies continually knock themselves down in Ring of Warding while not attacking the group since they have been pre-programmed to flee.

Yeah, you can take care of that AI right now… but if you introduce both taunt and mobs-move-out-of-AOE at the same time, you can show it off in videos to magnify the hype of the expansion since it’d look pretty cool.

IMO it’s like torment: a gimmick condition that’s unnecessary.

I can’t imagine trash mobs being given stability just so they could brute force “fleeing from AoE” into the game. The system failed pretty badly in GW1 (splinter weapon/mark of pain/hundred blades + whirlwind attack/cyclone axe/triple chop/twin moon sweep anyone?), and I don’t even see why they would reintroduce it in GW2.

I guarantee any plans to program mobs to flee rather than the current system of attacking back in hopes that players stop casting will be exploited and broken the first week (if not day) the patch goes live. ANet won’t get anywhere trying to “outsmart” us.

I think the term taunt was a poor choice just because of the baggage it carries especially in MMOs. This looks more like a reverse fear than anything else – achieving the same effect as binding blade. Since it functions as a disable, I doubt the effect will last more then a few seconds, maybe 5 at most. They don’t mention it effecting aggro beyond the duration of the skill itself so I don’t think it will make tanking any more reliable than it is now.

It will cause a massive influx of pugs advocating nomads taunt builds though.

That really depends on the changes to Defiance and just how much Taunt uptime any one class can maintain at a time. If it really is feasible to completely 100% draw aggro, there may be some value to it in certain encounters. Eco has already raised some of the interesting cases I was also thinking about where Taunt could be really nifty even without super tanky builds. Maybe some of the new content could also strongly encourage bunkers in PvE. We’ll have to wait and see!

Well people advocate things like perplexity builds in pve on classes which have no confusion and barely any interrupts. Builds dont have to make sense in the gametype for people to advocate them for roleplaying reasons. So yeah im calling it even if the taunt access is inconsequential and really low duration.

Also we kind of do know how defiance works. If you go watch the stronghold preview stream you can see how “fear me” interacts with the new defiance bar against the lord. It looks like a very pug friendly system. Basically when a CC is used it removes a portion of the bar but it immediately starts regening. So it will require a bit of coordination so multiple CC’s are needed. We dont know about what happens after a successful CC though. If theres no cooldown i could see stunlocking on bosses becoming a thing.

I don’t see this becoming much of a thing unless many more changes are made. It really all depends what they do and it’s hard to visualize anything because all you can really imagine is what it would be like with our current game if we had another control effect.

Imagining it like that, then obviously nothing much would change.

These new specializes/class changes, however, mean that anything could happen for what we know.

Oh interesting. I didn’t see that stream but was curious about the new defiance bar. I don’t know that it seems more “pug friendly” though. I think the number of stacks displayed is the most friendly option out there.

Adding a bar would be on par with pug groups trying to de-cap TTWurm heads at the same time. There just isn’t the communication to stack skills in unison in pugs. A little disappointed that they went with this change. It seems more friendly in an easy to see UI sense but as far as execution goes, I think it will still be something foreign to the average player.

I think the reason as to why so many people miss on the defiance system is because its visualization doesn’t stand out and its not really demanded to succeed in any content. Now with a bigger visual people may more likely pick up on its context, could this also spell out for content that requires you to CC properly to even remotely stand a chance? In the stronghold video a warrior used fear me near the boss and the bar went from 100% to 25-30%. A 25% loss per second of fear?? Maybe the new bar might have different values for different ccs. Makes sense for me that harder ccs should reduce more the bar.

fine, you taunted it and it will turn and walk to you or auto attack you for 3ish seconds.

Are you going to:

A) stand there and take the hit?

B) avoid the damage and move/dodge when it swings at you?

After 3 seconds then it goes right back to what ever it was it was doing with no realistic agro control. It may or may not continue to attack you but do you still want it on you?

Currently no one is taking any amount of drastic hits anyway so taunting it off…well no one, does pretty much nothing (new fight mechanics may ask for taunting since they made it though).

Also, we don’t know the cooldown of the taunt so maybe it is once every 30 seconds for 3 seconds…you “tanked” nothing in the end.

The biggest advantage of taunt is the prevention of special attacks. This could be used to stop incoming death attacks and buy players some extra time to get endurance to dodge another big insta death move.

Also many have mentioned the possible application of confusion making targets auto attack when they don’t want to. That is interesting as a way to encourage smart application of confusion, but PvE mobs auto pretty slow (this may be up for change in new content).

Unless they come up with some smart mobs using proper builds in HoT, this won’t change a thing. Maybe all the banner+signet warriors will have to take a stunbreak for once. But i bet the taunt will be telegraphed so you can … drumroll … dodge it!

They are not too fond of 5-man instances so whatever. It can be fun in pvp/wvw though.

lol no.

it depends on what they will release in terms of pve content.
you will probably use it to move a boss from A to B.
or what they could do is encounter mechanics that force the group to permanently keep up taunt on the boss (player 1 taunt > x sec > player 2 taunt > x sec > player 3 taunt > and so on) or wipe. thats it.

Seems much like Wildstar’s Interrupt Armour (IA) system, which was a much better evolution of the defiance system in GW2.

In Wildstar, a boss would have say 2 charges of IA so it would take 3 successive stun attacks to actually stun the boss. When stunned it created a “moment of opportunity”, when the boss would take double damage before the armour recharges.

I liked it, forced the group to co-ordinate the CC in an immediately rewarding way (interrupt dangerous skills & DPS boosts).

My guess: mobs will move out of AOEs and so you’ll need AOE taunts to keep them in.

Why bother taunting? If they’re designed to run out of AoEs just bring 3-4 staff eles and 1-2 hammer guardians.

Huehuehue while the enemies continually knock themselves down in Ring of Warding while not attacking the group since they have been pre-programmed to flee.

For bosses just maintain cripples and chills to keep them in it.

2-3 staff eles, 1-2 hammer guards, 1 mesmer with time warp + null field.

2) won’t be able to dodge the next attack that could one shot you

I mean, it wouldn’t be that hard to program the AI to have a priority list so that fleeing AoE fields is something it does, but at a lower priority than not walking into walls. So if you ring of warding a mob, it’d sit there and take the AoE until the ring went away, then move. Similarly, it could prioritize killing a low health player, or not interrupting it’s own skill activations, rather than moving out of an AoE field as well.

Non naïve implementations aren’t going to be so easy to break.

If you guys remember the last FoTM tourney one of the guild went really far with the AH guardian. Personally If taunt is actually a viable source of CC that allows for the introduction of a tank, I can see a viable/fast meta coming out of it. You basically have 4 DPS that will never down and will probably require to dodge less. Vacuum dps rotation is legit and apparently highest dps ele trait is one where you must have full endurance and 100% hp.
