3d Printing characters
I am wondering if anyone knows of a way for me to order custom made 3d printed characters. The reason I ask is because a friend and I are really great friends and soon her and I will need to part ways in real life and I want her and I to have something to remember each other by, and I can’t think of anything better than mini models of our two characters standing together (Or some other pose) on a small pedestal. I don’t mind if I have to hand paint it, I was just wondering if there’s any way…
(Small note: I can model environments so I could make a pedestal, but I’m bad at modeling characters so I was hoping to avoid modeling the characters myself if at all possible. (Plus modeling for 3d printing is a pain.))
There was a company that did this for World of Warcraft called like Figureprints or something. Anyhow, to do a 3D print you need the actual 3D model. I dunno how you’d go about getting that, but maybe one of the data miners on the forums could shed some light on if it is possible and how it could be done.
Once you do that, I’m sure you could find a company and/or individual on ebay that you could send the models to via email, have them print it off, and then you pay them for doing it.
The only thing is that (and correct me if I’m wrong here)- I don’t think 3D printers can do full color yet, so you’ll have to hand paint them. I could be wrong, though.

That’s going to be pretty hard and expensive to design.
If its hand crafted it would be. But if they can yank the 3D model of the character from somewhere, the way FigurePrints (or whatever they were called) did with the 3D models on WoW’s armory, a 3D printer could sketch that bad boy right out without problems.
of course, I have no clue if you can even get that 3D model though. If not- yep, expect to spend big money getting someone to hand craft those characters.
Maybe get a nice screenshot instead, maybe of the 2 of you standing next to each other in a place you really like or is interesting, then have a painting made of that picture.

This might be a much cheaper option to compromise with. There are a lot of great artists out there that work for commission, I have had some done myself of some old EQ characters years and years ago that I played. Good Idea Astral.

Makerbot and Reprap are your best options. There is a huge community that does stuff like this. Would probably not be too expensive.
