ok here is the maths… ure in 5 guilds and they are 10 members active at all times… thats 50 members… and there is a scenario where u have a SINGLE guild that is 5 times the size and u have 50 active members… they have the same interest as u do. What would be ure choice?

Id pick those smaller guilds. As ive stated multiple times, i will not ever join a guild that is large, ever again. Nor would i ever let them know anything about me as i have done with these smaller guilds. But you clearly do not wish to understand why not everyone likes being part of a big guild like you do. And that is fine. But this change is a good thing, a really good thing, and that is my opinion, just as yours is yours.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

You’re insisting that this multi guild chat is bad. And it isn’t. I’m in one guild that I rep. But I also have a guild for my Guild Wars 1 guildies that’s mostly a place to hold our names. They are scattered around in other guilds. Now we will be able to guild chat together, even though we are all in different guilds. I won’t have to whisper them individually. We can all talk together while repping our own guilds.

U dont need to rep them to talk to them, just make a party, skype, ts or what ever to keep ure current guild solid as u said… if u talk to them then u relly are not making an effort getting to know ure new guild mates are u? I mean a guild is a guild… solidary community… u have 1000 million ways to communicate whit ure “lost friends”

we have snapped out many of theese players and made them solid of the cause. But the problem still stands… how many hasnt feeled the warmth of a guild.. and still playes this game solo for their own needs

You keep implying that me and some other posters are selfish solo players…

I don’t see how you can jump that conclusion, simply because I support diverse speciality guilds and being a member of multiple.

Loyalty and dedication to the guild doesn’t mean you have to rep 100%.

I’ve been a member of a few guilds so far.

My first guild in GW2 wasn’t a 100% rep guild. We had a lovely, small, tight-knit community and I repped up for almost all of my game-time back then, only occassionally un-repping to practise my second language in another guild and enjoy their company from time-to-time. Unfortunately, the guild leader and his wife suddenly disappeared without a word (could only assume it was a real-life crisis). I repped for about half a year before I decided that there wasn’t much point in waiting longer- most of the other guildies left as it slowly became more empty and there was nobody else to maintain the guild.

My second guild was a 100% rep guild. There was a loyal core there, and it wouldn’t have mattered if the guild was 100% rep or not. The guild offered almost everything anyway to a moderate capacity, so people didn’t really need to visit other guilds(no big WvW raids, no PvP arena, no RP but you could ask somebody to join you in those game-modes if you just wanted to casually dabble). Just because some of the members repped 100% of the time didn’t mean that they were loyal, however. Many appeared to not care for the guild or community- a good amount were totally uninvolved except just repping up.

My point here is that you can’t call all members in a 100% rep guild loyal and you certainly can’t call members of a non-100% rep guild disloyal.

Ok, but that doesn’t really have anything to do with chat. If he fears his guild members will abandon his guild because they can chat with the members of the other guilds they belong to, he is certainly allowed to create a 100% rep-required guild. Problem solved.

Wouldnt solve his problem cedo :P They’d simply rep his guild, turn off his guild’s chat, and then turn on the chats for the guilds people really like. Thus his guild is abandoned in all but name.

And frankly, why do you care, OP? If I’m repping one guild, but also actively rep in another one, it kittening sucks that it’d be forced to miss out on things going on in the other guild because seeing chat required repping. Maybe I rep my personal 1man guild for quiet time, but I want to know if another of my guilds is starting some events?

Again u dont see the benefits of a solid guild

I belong to a guild that, at it’s strongest numbers, had 6 thousand people. Clearly, you are the one that doesnt see the point of this change. Frankly, I dont care, you’ve proven that you dont understand, or want to understand, how this change is a benefit.

Lets agree to disagree

If they are in their own party, doing WvW or guild missions or just with a bunch of other guildies, then you can’t party up with them. Why should I Skype when I can chat in game? Why should I ask them to skype with me when they are already probably in team speak with WvW. Why shouldn’t I give them some priority? They are people I’ve known for years?

You are so fixated on your guild that you would trample on everything that gets in your way.

well u off all people i have chatt whit here makes sense… ofc if u have a guild that size arent always loyal. it takes effort and time to make them loyal or dedicated to the guild. engage them and make them feel as if they are a part and a big part of the guild, give them friends and loyal officers that assist them, give them what ever assist they want. This means a 200% dedicated guild for their members. Does that exist… yeah… all this time we spend on our members and they are still here after 3 years. All time u spend on ure guildies and the trust u work up is worht more them the game it self… but if u dont have the tools to work that trust… whats the point of guilds then if everyone u know is sell swords?

ofc there will be a guild for anything… but what about that guild… that u accualy has a guildhall whit… or should u have 5 guildhalls and join them when ever u choose, then whats the point of joining a fight and claim ure guildhall? where is th dedication and guild feeling?

Different people will approach this in different ways. But what I think you’re missing is that not all guilds will be … well, Guilds.

Chat-only guilds will not need a guild hall. They will not need you to represent them. They’re just a way to create a chat channel for a group of people to talk to each other. They’ll never be your main guild, nor do they need to be.

well this is the core im trying to get to… there is a gray non guild area in gw2, that are playing solo and just wanna chatt when they rarly are online or doesnt have any attachment nore commitment to any guild… here is exactly where the gw2 community fails… they fail in a scense where they give this community even a bigger gap… to play solo and join what ever community they want called “Guilds”. so whats the point in Guild in Guildwars more then repping 5 guilds and be all over the place? why not just convert this to console and everyne can enjoy their time in peace.

Because a whisper isn’t good for multi person conversations. And I don’t want to join their guild. They do WvW, which I’m not interested in and they are on a different server so I’m not eligible to join even if I did like WvW.

This allows us to chat in game as a group even though we are all in different guilds and scattered.. Old friends you know. Maybe that isn’t as important to you as your guild but it is to me.

@Tyrion, it’s hard to have a conversation with multiple people involved if you’re using whisper. I don’t see why you’re so aggressively against being able to see multiple guild chats at once. It seems like you prefer people to be inconvenienced. I know that I’d talk to a lot of my gw1 guildies if this feature was in place- there would be fewer obstacles in place and it means that communication would be on a casual- “when-you-feel-like-it” level rather than having to plan it in advance. There are many reasons why I’m not in a guild now with my gw1 guildies, and that is besides the point.

This change will facilitate me being able to rekindle strong bonds with my old friends whilst still enjoying my current guild. This means increased socialisation, the opportunity to make more new friends and enjoying more people’s company at once.

If you don’t want to speak to multiple guilds at once, you don’t have to. The feature isn’t forced, you can always hide separate chats. Most will agree that the new feature will be a benefit to the majority of players.

Just because these things don’t fit to your perfect single community ideal doesn’t make it any less of a community.

PS: I love Palador’s “chat group guild” idea. Sounds very fun indeed.

whats the point is that they shouldnt have featured the representation in the first place… in this matter they should rather implement a buddy chatt system to get them in as a chatt as in mirc or any other old chatt code. Friends join and thats it… no repping guilds and joining their guld runs and guildhalls assisting in their upgrades and then switch back to assist in the other guilds upgrades… i see 0 commitment in that.. sorry but im old fashion and will ever be in the sense of guilds because thats where im raised and i want my community to be

You seem overly focused on the importance of Guilds and being part of one. Just because you’re running around solo doesn’t mean you’re not enjoying the social aspects of the game. You can jump in and help someone kill a monster, or take on a world boss with everyone else in the area. You can revive someone, or get revived. You can talk and maybe even joke with the people in map chat. You can see cool looking characters, and maybe try to improve on the look yourself.

Guilds are not the important part of the game. They’re just one way to get to it. For some people, they’re not the best way. The guild chat changes will just give more options to people, make the game more flexible in the social aspects, so more people can have fun.

Well u and me dont chare the same aspect of the game what uve been writing is one thing but the one thing u said about the sharing part is mostly for minor guild that doesnt have any other choice but to represent other guilds to get the maximum enjoyment of this game… u know why… because they will not have a chance to become a solid guild whit the ground that 5 guild representation gives them

I have to say, it sounds like being in your guild is like being in middle school again with someone above you setting all sorts of rules for what you can and can’t do, with the threat of guild kick if you don’t conform.

Bleh.

yeah almost some times that is what neccerasy to be a solid guild and when everyone accept the same rules well then u cant go back on it can u a guild is a democracy and ruels form from it eventually thats just how a modern society is and after time and many mistakes u see that some works and some dont And some makes for a verry light easy to go guild where people repp alll over the place and doesnt make any sence nore any commitment. And when u go the other way in the psykoligy u accualy makes more sense and more commitment. its just roeds to take matey. what ever road u choose is prob an easy one and i can understand that. The 5 guild rep way, easy way out from struggeling and make ure own main guild into what it can be

Along with that weird person that doesnt understand you when you break it down into simple concepts.

Sometimes “simple” aint enough and u accualy have to explaine what ure trying to acheve whit ure comments. Maby u should get to know me before u say weird, anything that comes to mind is that people that doesnt make an effort getting to know others and say that they are weird… well they are pretty much… weird

So why dont u just join the same guild? dont see the problem in that? and maby expand it to ure liking if u want to do wvw or pvp or pve? get some more friends that like that and then ure set… a guild tha suits u.. ahh yeha i know…its to much work… easyer to rep an other guild that speciallice in that.. wooohooo easy mode gw2

I can understand Just a Flesh Wound’s frustration… they’ve already answered this question for you…

They do WvW, which I’m not interested in and they are on a different server so I’m not eligible to join even if I did like WvW.

Flesh would end up sacrificing their ability to co-operatively play with others in PvE/PvP just to be able to talk to his/her friends. When it comes down to it, GW2 is a game.. and people want to play it.

As for expanding the possibilities in such a guild, you’d face many problems:
-A WvW guild might want to remain as WvW oreintated as possible. Adding PvE elements in the game dilutes this greatly.
-A lack of members wanting to join a WvW for PvE content. PvE players will join a PvE guild as it benefits them more as they will be with other like-minded players.
-In this situation, perhaps Flesh doesn’t want to take up the responsibility of managing a section of a guild? There are only so many hours in a day. Most people have lives outside of GW2 and other responsibilities.

We can all see that you truly love your guild, Tyrion… and that’s excellent! I’m pleased that you have found yourself a great way to enjoy the game.

But other people get equally as much enjoyment from the game and guilds in their own, different, ways. And that’s really awesome too!

But forcing your own way to play/involvement with guilds isn’t going to work for many people. Doing so would decrease their enjoyment and that is not ok- it’s not good for the game or community.

What A-net are doing with the new guild updates are increasing the amount of ways people can have fun with their guilds and in-game. More variety is a great thing. It’s not hurting anybody.

then they prob wouldnt mind him joining their chat when they raid? He prob wants to talk whit them when they are not raiding and their guild chat would be very silenced as they are on TS doing wvw. So there is no issue there. they can talk an other time. And then they dont need an other guild chatt as they are raiding, when they get off raiding the go in party chatt or meet up doing a dungeon or what ever, Gw2 has been in 3 years whitout g1 to g5 chatt and have worked wonders whitout it. Ive never seen anyone complain about it ither so i dont see any usage of it.

A pve guild can get that kind of community to accualy do a WvW event 3 times a week at least if they want to and u can join when ever y ahve the time to join in. A WvW how ever makes u join certain days a week othervice ure considered inactive. So my vote for that is a casual pve guild doing wvw and pvp.

He doesnt have to manage a section, its a guilds responsibility to try to manage events that members wants and accualy wants to spend time doing. If they dont wanna do wvw, fine.. next week they crawe it.. then we do it… its all about democracy. And about what they want to do. And even if they are a minority u still make time to do events for them evenly as the main events occure. thats what a guild is all about! if ure not in any of theese guilds u should quit instant and look up any guild that has a community based on theese values

Yeah im old fashion sorry about that… but in a way im tired of people that doesnt have any sense of feeling as they belong to anything… and just logg on and… yeah… have no safty nett nore people to rely on. Maby they have.. but i cant see that happen in a community of representing all over the place. thats just my opinion… and yeah i know people play diffrent and i want them to enjoy gw2. You should stop worrying about whether you feel a person “belongs” or doesn’t- that’s not your problem- you can’t worry about everybody! If somebody wants to find a community like yours, I’m sure they will and they won’t struggle to find one. I know that there are many tight-knit communities out there. It doesn’t take long to bump into one!

I actually would have loved to have possibility of seeing multiple guild chats, when I was still playing this.

Due I had multiple guilds where I was in.
One for WvW, second for hanging out & everyday chats, third for personal bank space and randomly fourth for hanging out when second guild was having long silent periods due inactivity etc.

Now they’re bringing chance to represent more your main guild, while you can still see and know what your other guilds are doing. Which allows much more flexible way to balance between all those.

Overall crying over “old school” guild system in GW2 is quite stupid, I can sort of understand it, but stupid still.
Because GW2 guilds don’t have similar meaning than most MMOs. They’re more of a “flavors of the moment/day” things.
For example “feeling like doing some WvW today”, rep WvW guild and go on.
“Feeling like doing some casual pveish day with cozy chatting”, rep main guild. Etc.

Guilds just don’t have similar meaning here, it used to be even worse in the past when PVE guilds didn’t have absolutely anything to do together, or common cause.
Just running along Tyria looking for DE trains.

Still my main suggestion is that if you want 100% representation guilds back, with only options “stay or leave” switch game, most other MMOs are still stiff in this way, which is fine. Since they do have a lot stable guild needing content, like raids and such.

Switched Anet to Square E and haven’t regretted it even once.

As a person that likes a large diversity of what guild wars has to offer, its pvp, pve, wvw, rp, exc, You can’t tell me that there is any one guild that is great in ALL of them. I do not offer any disrepect but can you truely say that your guild is excellent in all EVERYTHING guild wars 2 has to offer? My point, again no disrespect, is that will having a 100% represent guild you are restricting your members to the weaknesses that your guild has as NO guild can be perfect at everything.

With the guild chat change and influence change there are two good things comming.

  • I won’t be kicked from a guild only because i’m not representing it 100% of the time. That comes from the removal of influence.
  • 5 guild chats are actually good thing. For instance i’m in 4 guilds currently(WvW/dungeon/World bosses/personal bank). If i want to talk with each one i have to click represent…Anet just skips this step and make my life easier. There is nothing wrong with that lol.

Honestly, from personal experience, a large mixed mode guild can’t offer you the same thing a small focused guild can. Surely the large guild is good if want to be casual about it, jump here and there now and then without any commitment but won’t work out if you want to be a bit more serious.

I’ve been in a large guild, more than 300 members with 80-ish online daily and yet they could barely form a group of 10 to raid once per week and hardly form 1 full pvp party and when that happened, was usually the same players every time. It was pretty much impossible to work on anything outside PvE domain.

For motives as cited above, I like the idea of segregating guilds by game modes, as well as having one small pvx guild for when just want to chill, and because of that, the new chat feature will be good and handy.

Having more than one guild doesn’t automatically qualifies players as disloyal. Sometimes the guild don’t supply what you need at the time be that PvP, PvE, WvW or/and RP (or even people online, really) and other times you just want a really closed guild where you are more comfortable.

I am looking forward for the new chat options and, in my case, think will help tighten up the friendship ties between guilds, as well as will be a great service for those huge guilds with more than 1000 members.

But the problem still stands… how many hasnt feeled the warmth of a guild.. and still playes this game solo for their own needs

Why do you care? How do you know they’d even appreciate “feeling the warmth of a guild”? How do you know they’d even feel comfortable in a guild like yours? How do you know that your idea of one 100% 300-person guild is right for everyone?

Right now, I’m a member of two active guilds. One (of which, incidentally, I am one of the guildleaders) is made up of older players, many of us 40+, with people mostly playing open world pve, casual dungeons, and small-scale or public-zerg wvw. Since most of us have a full-time job, “busy” guild hours are usually in the evening.

My second main guild is made of people I’ve met dungeoning. Most members are in their 20s and enjoy playing dungeons in a more dedicated, near-meta (or meta) environment. Running dungeons with this guild is a totally different experience than with the other guild.

Both guilds are roughly in the 20-50 member range. Both have different main languages, with people that don’t care to speak (or sinply don’t know) the other guild’s language. Both have a very different focus. Both concentrate on parts of this game that I enjoy very much, but there’s only a very small part of members on both sides that would feel comfortable in the other guild.

I like to know the people I play with regularly, and I know personal details about most, if not all of the people in both guilds, where they come from, what job they hold, family ties, hobbies, whatever. Many of them have even become real life friends, and I have even met some of them outside of the game. To me, being in a guild means being with friends I share interests with and like to spend time with.

There is a third guild that I am a member of, the first guild I joined in this game. The guild has long since become inactive, with people hopping around different games, but every few months one group or another comes back for a stay in GW2, and every time they do, they make sure to say hi to people that are still here, even if none of us reps any more. They’re still friends, even if the only show up occasionally.

You see, I very much know the “warmth of a guild”. I’d never feel comfortable in a 300 member guild, much less one that requires me to ditch my old friends that may not be around as much any more, or my old friends that speak another language, or my old friends that focus on a different aspect and thus join a different guild (dungeon speedclear, wvw, whatever). Just because my friends don’t all have the exact same interests in this game doesn’t mean I don’t know what it means to be part of a community.

Personally, I am really looking forward to the guild overhaul, because it will make it much easier for me to be an active part in both active communities I belong to, instead of having to choose one or the other. It’s pretty much what I try to teach my kids: If your friend tries to dictate who you’re allowed to be friends with, they’re not really your friend. If my guild tries to dictate which community I may involve myself in, it’s not the guild for me.

Thank you ArenaNet for making it easier to be social and really involve yourself in all aspects of this game!
