A new nvidia driver update just popped up for me… seeing as people are also linking the problems with nvidia, I can’t decide if i should wait til after the 64 bit client to update the driver, as if there are further problems I won’t know if it’s the driver or the client :/

Doubt you will see your nVidia update cause issues. I installed yesterday and played without issue. You can always drop back to the 32 client if you have issues – or back out the nVidia update.

Review after a couple hours of usage:

I’ve been using it since it came out, and as someone who was having major crash issues on the Hot maps it seems to have improved stability thus far. After participating in both a full start to finish VB and AB meta map I did not crash, and had less stutter which sometimes would prelude an incoming crash. My RAM usage is up from about 2-2.5 GB to upwards of 3.5-4 GB; which is a good thing if that was the limitation causing the crashes.

So, my overall feedback so far is positive. I haven’t noticed any hiccups with graphics, stability, loading, sound, etc. Nicely done for an initial release!

For some reason, the “auto detect” graphics are lower on the 64bit version than on the 32bit version. 32 sets everything to high, 64 sets Environment and character model and limit to medium.

should I get the 64 bit version or just stay where I am now?

If you are not encountering OOM crashes, there is no reason to switch to the beta 64-bit client. GW2 is not optimized for 64-bit, so you’ll likely see slightly less FPS and higher memory usage. In the future however, the 64-bit client will likely become a requirement. The new zones on high settings for example is already almost there.

this will only present itself as a problem to very few people. While areas are not specifically optimized for 64 bit, they will still run just as well under 64 bit. The only difference here is the allocation of memory to processes. It should run the same if not better… how much better is the key issue here. People are already reporting either the same with no change or an overall better experience, which lends credit to my statement.

Submit crashs to the 64bit cliente beta FAQ page.
Here is a simple explanation: 32bit aplications can only use up to 3.5Gb of RAM. Before the limites is reached parte of the game assets will be writen to the virtual memory on your hard disk. This will sometimes cause a crash due to lack of both memory or error when assets are transfered to the HDD, speacialy on the new maps.
The new 64bit EXE means that the game can now access more than the 3.5Gb of RAM, it ill now write less to the HDD and the possiblity of a crash is minor. This also means an decrease in load times due to the fact that writes less in the HDD and more of the game assets are avaliable to be fast acessed in the RAM.
Overall, when Out of beta, the 64bit cliente should behave better than the 32bit client.

On my old machine (First gen i7) I had a pair of 275s in SLI. In general everything was fine for most games, but GW2 HATED it. I had to turn the SLI off then GW2 was happy to run on a single 275 card, lower graphics settings of course, but at least it never crashed. Got the new machine with the new 670 (3 years ago) and GW2 started being a dog.

As a non computer literate person, what does this mean to me?

If means if you have it the game will use more ram. Typically a 32-bit game will not use more than 3gb of ram even if you have 16gb in your computer.

64-bit will allow the game to use as much as it wants/needs.

So, as someone who uses a Dell laptop and have windows 10 on it, running GW2 on more or less the minimum settings and not having many connection issues if any with the game, should I get the 64 bit version or just stay where I am now?

Depends first on your processor (most likely a 64-bit one if it’s a recent purchase, 5 years or so) and then second how much ram you have in your computer.

If you don’t have more than 4gb of ram it won’t help you very much.

Peak memory usage 5.7 Gb ram… doing dragon stand.

1920*1080 max graphic settings. no crashes, seems stable, only thing I found weird was the amount of memory usage, but I do not mind, having 32 Gb It should work out fine.

Sli-ed graphics solution. min FPS seemed a bit higher

64bit can use more memory than 32bit, this might resolve some of the gw2 crash issue. Yes, gw2 now using more memory than before. What happen to game optimization?!

This is the problem with asking for “optimizations”. You don’t mention what you are optimizing. For example various speed optimizations involve using more memory.

I just checked my trading post while out adventuring in the new hot maps and saw that i had 32 gold in my pick up tab. I zoned into the city in order to speak to a representative npc of the black lion trading company to pick up my gold. By the time i reached him, i had 64 gold in my pick up tab. Is that a related bug or working as intended because i am beta testing the new 64 bit client?

If its working as intended, is there any ETA on the 128 bit client?

I would love to beta test that one also.

Wat.

You do realize utilization is a core of optimization? If a program is only using half of the available resources and suffers because of it, its poorly optimized.

For anyone curious, the 64 bit client will have NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER. UNLESS you have more than 4 GB of memory. This is because with 32 bits, you end up with 4096 available memory addresses, whereas with 64 bits this is increased exponentially into the billions of GB range (meaning computer can use as much as it wants).

Where will this be good?

In any situation where the program hits that memory cap, meaning:

WvW zergs

Meta events

It should run better in more intensive areas in general.

So Colin, can we ever expect DX11? :P Would be nice to play the game running off an API that isn’t roughly 13 years old.

In the tech world there is a saying: “Unused ram is wasted ram”.

Meaning if you have 16gb of ram and it’s sitting there unused then not only did you waste money buying 16gb of ram but your computer is not performing as well as it could.

Anyways, yesterday during the last phase of the Dragon Stand meta, fighting on the platforms I had a crash. Today doing the same event it ran flawlessly. I’m not saying the crashes are fixed but so far so good.

K. Ram is random access memory, if I recall correctly

How does a game having access to more ram affect it? Does it run smoother or something?

To use an analogy, it’s like packing and unpacking boxes. Say you’re in a 2,000 square foot room, but you’re only allowed to use 200 square feet of it, and you have 3,000 square feet worth of junk in your boxes – that’s just fine if you only need 200 square feet of room at a time (just showing off bits of your rock collection every day), but as soon as you need to use 400 square feet you’ll be running back and forth between the room and storage, clearing out room and unpacking boxes like a madman. Of course, running between rooms like a madman increases the chance of tripping and face vaulting onto the floor or messing up some other way.

Similarly a 32 bit client has a limit on how much memory (the room) it can unpack GW2 files in, so upgrading the client to 64 bit will allow it to unpack more and spend less time running back to the HD (storage) for files. This won’t make a difference in the older maps, because they were designed to work with the old memory restriction (only needs 200 square feet), but the new maps aren’t and need the extra memory, so it will only really improve stability and performance in the new maps.

I played smoother fps then ever before with the 64 bit client for 4 minutes till my 4 gb of ram maxed out at 98% usage. Then my client froze up and I had to ctrl alt delete my way out of the game. Then I went back to the 32 bit client and the game runs just as smooth as the 64 bit. Where as before trying the 64 bit client my 32 bit client would be a kittenoppy. Its like just running the 64 bit client made my 32 bit client run smoother. Very fishy… I do say so my self….

There is virtually no benefit to be had from a 64-bit client if you only have 4gb of ram. Keep in mind that your operating system and any other programs you’re running such as media players and web browsers will also be taking up ram, GW2 doesn’t get to use up all the ram even if you wanted to. That would cause bad things to happen such as what you describe with the game crashing.

And as the guy said in his faq even with the 64-bit client there will not be massive performance gains.

What you think you are experiencing is placebo. I can just about guarantee that.
