You are running around wearing heavy plated armor with a dozen extra weapons and endless amounts of loot in your bags (which consists mostly from even more armors and weapons).

I’d say you can stay in a pretty fit condition after hauling all that around Tyria.

Well not everyone is. Some run around in clothed sheets with a big wooden stick in their hands. I mean, staff build elementalists must get pretty lazy just standing there, waving with their staff.

I would love more body types, personally.

Some of the NPCs are, in the words of another forum user, “adorably plump”, and we can’t have that. :/

well, even swinging stick and staff will make you fit, heck, even the “run around” part already makes you fit if you do that everyday.

but it’ll be interesting seeing more diverse types of body build.

I’m super all about varying body-types (Scott Pilgrim’s make-your-self website was an offender). But yeah, adventuring tends to slap muscle on/burn fat off.

Yeah, but they run everywhere. Players run more than Forest Gump.

Players should all look like marathon runners.

If you eat enough, you can stay pretty chubby even with huge amounts of exercise. I’ve known a few amazing skilled dancers who were quite large.

It’s amazing how many calories you can accumulate if you’re constantly drinking sodas.

Anyone that takes part of PvP, WvW, dungeons, jumping puzzles, or fractals are not allowed to be fat. Seriously, have you guys ever thought of what life would realistically be like in Tyria? Work out central XD

In all seriousness, I think it would be cool to have different body types. I can’t really see how any hero could be out of shape, but it would still be nice to have.

I’d like to have some more extra body types as well, do things like having a fat monk type of character or maybe a fat warrior (see Thulsa Doom on the original Conan movies, for example) or something like that. Right now closest you could have to a fat human would be a male norn with the “robust” body type and the minimun possible size (still would be bigger than the biggest human, but not by much)

BTW, working out like you do in tyria doesn’t necessarily mean you’d be thin… check sumo wrestlers, those guys spend most of the day training and exercising, but their diet and lifestyle is mainly directed to build muscle and skin fat that’s not as unhealthy (still is, though) as the visceral fat most of us fatties have. Also if you see power lifting competitions (or basically any body strength competition that isn’t related to body building) you’d see many competitors, even in the top spots, that would be considered fat on first glance.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

There are already some voluptuous options available for body design. I believe the designers intentionally didn’t want extremes of appearance with regards to character bodies. Outside Norn Males having the option to have extremely large……..feet.

With that said there was a rather paunchy male mesmer hero in GW1.

Hey dude you are walking into a wall.

If you want to be realistic about it; yes, you can still be large and work out constantly. However, given the age of the world and how it seems to be in an agricultural age, there’s almost zero chance of anyone being fat (least of all the average human). Most humans are living off of vegetables, grains, and some animal byproducts; and work from sunup to sundown just to live.

That said, it’s just not practical. People already complain about armor on charr and how it doesn’t fit properly. Adding even one more, distinct, body type could be a nightmare for the programmers.

  1. Constant running I don’t know about you guys, but my character waypoints. Maybe she was supposed to be really fit when she did map completion, but now, uh, not so much.
Sumo wrestlers have a LOT of muscle mass and are constantly in physical training, and yet they manage (on a strict diet of constant “over”-eating) to retain their fighting weight.
  2. RP: Some of us roleplay characters that are not out adventuring 24/7, but are scholarly types or commoners or fat nobles or whatever, and would like our character’s bodies to reflect that.
  3. “Fat”: There is a LOT of gray area between “athletic” and “fat”. I would like to be somewhere in the middle (what I call “normal”), but even though I made the “fattest” human possible, she still looks like a fashion model with her skinny arms, long legs, and supertight butt. It feels like on a scale of 1 to 10, we get to choose from 1, 2 or 3, and I would like to be a 5.
  4. Clipping: There is also a lot of grey area between the least skinny human female and the skinniest norn male. The norn male body works without the dev having to adjust the male (human) outfit overly much (if at all), so why would that be an issue for female body types? Besides, some NPCs (female norn) already HAVE plumper bodies that lie outside of the character creation slider scale, without any clipping issues.

The biggest issue is the technical limitations of their scaling with gear. Just quickly anyone who thinks they could actually pull this off ( I wish they could too) roll the biggest male norn.

Now, if you have it put on that new Noble outfit. Look at the tail part of the coat, it’s absolutely horrible!

Ok, now, put on the Ninja outfit, look at the stupidly large shoulders.

When scale gets bigger there seems to be an automatic function for these gear choices to just expand it in the same proportions… which leaves them looking terrible. There is no reason the bottom of a coat should flare out and look like it was part of a coat 2X the size, but because of the body frame having noticeably larger hips it just automatically flares it out. Same with the shoulders.

I just don’t think they could do it and still have gear look good, clipping issues, /shrug, but the scaling issues and fitting the body types… just wouldn’t look good in my experience. I love my giant norn but so many things are just unwearable because of how that works.

I always liked WoW’s slightly chubby human girls. Dat booty.

Back to business, though, there are already a lot of body types in GW2, I don’t know why they can’t go to the wider end of the spectrum. I used the barrel-chested human male for my avatar character, as he fits me pretty well (just a liiiiiittle bit of a paunch there). But, I could see how people who are a bit bigger would wish to have something that matches their appearance more closely.

Heck, ToR let you choose to be blatantly fat, and I thought that was pretty cool of them.

I get ya, just saying, if there is a 10% increase on the hip size there seems to be a 10% increase on the garments as well as the 10% increase from where they start making it look like you have Big Mama June hips even though without the clothes you don’t. Same with shoulders.

Like I said look at the largest male norn and the way things scale and you’ll see what I’m talking about. If they properly adjusted that armor scaling to actually fit the bodies instead of just saying “ohh it grew by X, lets increase the size of the armor by X” then it’d be different.

Hate to break it to y’all, here are plenty of hefty people who don’t lose weight from exercise or diet due to a myriad of genetic and hormonal issues. I invite all the eye-rolling in the world this statement can bring, because I know how some people are, but the truth’s the truth.

Now, clipping issues and things like that? Actual legitimate problem, but given the incredible size of some male norn, I don’t think it would be too bad. Something to consider, though.

I’m all for more body types. I tried to make a heavier set female norn once, who ended up average size compared to real-world humans (save for her gargantuan height), and her butt clipped though her armour. But that would have taken a small tweak and was more a “shame on the artist responsible” thing.

It’s possible to play a craftsman/merchant in this game all the way to level 80.

Do it in Rata Sum, and your character will never break a sweat moving between the crafting stations and trading post. On the way to max cooking, your character will be inundated with food containing plenty of refined carbohydrates and saturated fat.

There’s no reason fat Tyrians wouldn’t exist.

As others have pointed out, however, there’s plenty of reason not to have fat PCs. The biggest one is that return on investment is too low. Time spent by ArenaNet creating the models and making sure armor conforms would get better return invested in something else with a larger audience than the niche group who would like a plump toon.

The argument of it not being realistic always amuses me. We’re talking about a game here that has plant people.

The only issue I’d see with larger bodies would be clipping. I know the largest female Norn body clips in quite a bit of armor.

You mean waypoint then do a quick 2 minute jog to somewhere… Yeah you can still be quite portly.

I’m a big guy, though the largest norn fits me pretty well (a bit more of a gut now ) but I use to wrestle and play football. Wrestling season I’d run 3-4miles a day then wrestle for about 3-4 hours. Football would be an hour of lifting, 3 hours of practiced finished off by 30 mins – 1hour of sprints and conditioning drills.

Still, I was a big guy.

Turn on your TV tomorrow and watch CBS, you’ll see some SEC football, look at the lineman there, work out every day, but still big guys.

While personally I can’t keep up with my former self it still bugs me a little when people think that just because you’re large that you can’t be in shape.

While I kind of like the idea, the amount of effort it would take to add “large” versions to all 10 sets (5 races, 2 genders each) is about the amount it would take to add in models for an entire new race and leave everyone “fit”.

I’d rather have the new race.

Alternative body types are always a good thing for variety’s sake. Unfortunately I have no human characters. Or charr.

However, my asura warrior is certainly bulky as can be with his body type settings.

My asura thief was once too, but his tier one racial armor (and face) made him look fat. The shoulders clipped badly and some armor pieces left missing texture/alignment gaps in various body parts. Try looking into the ear covers on the medium tier one asura racial armor sometime.

Airhead. Nothing between the ears. :p

Devs probably don’t want to spend a lot of time creating body types that only a few people will use. I’d be surprised if more than a couple of percent of players wanted to have a fat toon.
