This thread should be just a little experiment.
I want just to see, how the discussion gets started by just a simple question gettign throwed in and what people think about it on the fly.

Either we will see a healthy big discussion, or this thread dies quickly.. we will see …

Now to the simple question…

What do you think about Guild Wars 2, if you see other Games like the following List of upcoming games?

  • Blade & Soul
  • Echo of Soul
  • BLESS
  • Icarus
  • Black Desert
  • ArchAge
  • Black Sheep
  • TESO
  • Everquest Next
  • Wildstar Online
  • EIN (Epicus Incognitus)

Simple asked, what is the first thing that shoots into your mind?
——

To begin with the discussion, I’ll tell you what I am thinking, when I look at this list…

It’s "missed potential*

So what do you think guys? ^^ Discuss

  • Black Desert
  • ArchAge
  • Black Sheep
  • TESO
  • Everquest Next
  • Wildstar Online
  • EIN (Epicus Incognitus)
  • Don’t know Blade & Soul: looks like a hack&slash game. GW2 is definitely better qua combat.
  • Echo of Soul: don’t know
  • BLESS actually looks like it might beat GW2 in both PvP and Story.
  • Icarus: don’t know
  • Black desert is very possibly a rising star. Great potential. Looks amazing. It might be better than GW2 on all aspects.
  • ArcheAge: the same as Black Desert looks very promising. Again a potential GW2 overtopper.
  • TESO: promised a lot, didn’t deliver. Combat looks rather… bland. PvP aswell. Good, decent, but not as high quality as GW2.
  • Everquest Next is for me the game that will beat GW2. Either it will be perfect, or it will become a hype. Potentially will cost GW2 a lot of population when it releases.
  • Wildstar is a no-go for me personally. The subscription model turns me off.
  • EIN: don’t know

All in all: I would say GW2 at this moment is probably the best MMO there is. BUT they did waste a lot of potential and this will not be forgotten by the playerbase. If any game comes that actually adresses problems such as the gear grind and the farming issues, and blobbing in PvP (I’m looking very expectantly at Everquest Next, ArcheAge and Black Desert), then GW2 will be punished for some decisions Anet has made concerning Gear grind and concerning Competition.

Why do you think this? Only because I listed some other game names ? That surely won’t happen. I want to discuss here about GW2, what people think about the game, when they have an other game, be it from the list, or not, in mind)

I am not discussing here anything about all those other games. I’m still discussing about GW2 in first line.
And thats why this thread fits correctly into this categoriy for discussing about GW2 and should be deleted, only because some other game names have been fallen/used in the discussion due to comparisons.

In discussions about a game, it should be normally allowed to compare the game with others if you want/need to do so, to explain something and make it easier to understand the things you want to explain to take it as a legal reference simply said.

@Sirendor
Yeah, thats somethign what I fear too for the upcoming years, among the list are some very good pears, rising stars as you said, where I think, that these games could cost GW2 alot of active players, becaue i think, in regard of features/mechanics do these games use better the “potential” to offer the gamers some epic experiences and simply more fun with better developed real time based action combat systems for example, character movement that just works/looks more fluent/smoothly running, more interactive things with the environment, even with creatures (mounts) for traveling in an active way, how I’ve never ever seen it before in any other MMO, very similar mechanics how I’ve seen them yet only on Offline RPG’s rather…

Alot of those games come nearer to what I would really say would count as “Next Gen MMO”, than what GW2 is.

My thought of “Missed Potential” can be so easily pointed at many things of GW2, where I just must say after over one year of playing GW2 now, that alot of what GW2 provides so far, could have been made better.
Please don’t understand this here as a QQ/complain thread, only because I’m not hailing GW2 right now for everything what this game makes very well.

Making this thread came only up into my mind, because I keep on seeing lately more and more people saying, that they keep a look on TESO, or a look on this 7on that…
Even I myself can view at myself and have to recognize/admit, that I start to look more and more after other games, like lately more and more again Blade & Soul, BLESS and ArchAge.

To explain this, I’d have to say.. that I’m a PvE Player, I love character creation and my goal is always to come up with characters, that end up to look and play as “epically/heroically” as possible.

Something where I think that GW2 currently lacks in alot and currently misses alot of potential, because the game has yet near to none real character progression.
A topic by the way a would love to discuss next with the Devs in their collaborate development discussion threads, once the one about all the Living World stuff is over and we move on to other topics…

Maybe I started this thread also to see, if there are more people, that have the same taste of games, like me, when it comes down to having heroically flashy characters.
However, not all of the games are that way, which i listed up…
Alot of them also made other things alot better, used the potential in the right way as to say..

For example in regard of story telling (cutscenes), in regard of episodic storytelling come also other games now into my mind, which are already there (Vindictus), when thinking on the Devs analogy of GW2 being similar to a TV series, what is also something, what I kind of cannot see existign in G2 yet, where I also would say, theres alot of missed potential.

However, good start, lets see what other people get into mind first, once they see the list in regard to the question

Death, dying, empty, lifeless, unmoving, pointless, generally boring, full of pointless grind, pointless activities, full of bugs, full of glitches, and finally, not worth it. Those are the words I use to describe GW2 when I see those other games.

If you want to know the truth, Rift did everything GW2 did, but they did it better. Much, much better. The dynamic events in Rift are really beginner friendly and you are rewarded properly for doing them. You are also able to scale down you level so you can play with friends. Or you could just stay your current level and one hit things.

Oh and I haven’t seen anything about EQN yet, just EQN: Landmark. There were some nice concepts in their presentation but some things sound better in theory than they are in practice. That is assuming they implement everything they mentioned.

As for Landmark … well it’s great if you like voxel builders but that is not the same type of game as GW2.

  • Blade & Soul Never going to happen, least not till I get an east asian language install.
  • Echo of Soul It’s WORLD OF WARCRAFT! I thought we were done with this as an industry. . .
  • Bless seems to have a weak animation system. Other than that I haven’t seen anything real exciting about the game at all. I read about how people harp on about the “graphics”, but in terms of overall graphical fidelity, the game looks worse than Black Desert Online. Aesthetically I’d say it’s much more boring than Guild Wars 2.
  • Icarus Online I hear a lot of familiar sound bytes, some from WoW, some from B&S. Combat and animations look boring, and overworld seems to reek themepark grind.
  • Black Desert Online Actually looks like a game I could adventure in, man it’s been a long time since I’ve had an adventure of my own. The lighting during dark thunderstorms actually excites me, as well as the caster gameplay. I’m just going to save everyone time and simply go with Black Desert Online is the only game in this thread that actually excites me.

Bugs me too, but I was going to let it slide.

I was excited about ESO until I learned more about it. I think it will fail to meet expectations and die off quickly.

I’ve head good things about EQ Next, but I’m unfamiliar with the franchise. I’m curious about it.

Don’t know anything about the other games.

Well only one out of that list that I could be slightly interested in is ESO. But we all know that Elder Scrolls combat has always been lackluster at best. And bad combat makes for a pretty painful MMO no matter how good the lore is.

Wildstar really doesn’t feel like it offers anything new for me. It might be different in some areas but nothing really draws my attention.

So for general thoughts on GW2 in comparison to those, I can say that my mindset on continuing to play GW2 is not threatened by it, and I will probably enjoy GW2 more then those for various reasons.

To me, I looked over the list and most of them are Korean (or at least I think are Korean, judging by their nonsensical names, like BLESS), thus I pretty much automatically assume I won’t be interested, because I don’t like playing a second job.

Possibly apart from Black Desert. That game looks like Vindictus with an open world setting. Since Vindictus was the one Korean game I’ve ever slightly enjoyed (before Nexon typically came in with its usual cash shop antics and levels of grind which would make even Asians cry), I might give it a try.

Wildstar is basically WoW-in-space, with graphics that looks equally as dated (no, being cartoony doesn’t exclude it from looking bad). If I wanted to play WoW, I’d go play the original with years more of content.

I’m very interested in TESO and EQN, EQN especially due to what it promised to deliver. I’ve been disappointed slightly however as both games announced they’ll have the Unholy Trinity as basis for their combat.

I have friends in the ESO beta, and they’re not impressed. Neither is the Reddit set up to talk about it. I don’t think it’s going to be a great game, but it’s still early days. Bethesda should have made their own game instead of passing it off to someone else. Then again, as buggy as their games usually are…might have been a bad idea for an MMO.

But it’s all irrelevant when talking about games that aren’t yet released anyway. The stuff people are saying about those games are the same things people said about Guild Wars 2 before launch. Sooner or later the shine wears off.

Guild Wars 2 is the only MMO I could stomach for more than about 4 months. It’s still fun for me to play.

I assume that when these other games come out, it’ll still be fun for me to play.

Considering that GW2 has been the most cruel and disparately unrewarding game I have ever played, looking at that list only makes me think one thing.

Hmm, what for a big sense does it make to post in a thread about other games, when you nearly know nothing about those games, especially when the topic is about what you get into mind about GW2 ins response to those other games… I don’t get it.

Also this threads intention was it not to judge over those other games, what they are and what they are not, if they are good, or not (but I think thats something that will always automatically happen..so meh xD I should have known it better)

And what on earth is please now the problem with the wording of “throwed in” ??
—-

However, now that people started with comparisons of what is worser than GW2 in their opinion, or better.. I just have to say at this point – good that tastes are different!

Because when looking at the list of upcoming games, and yes, most of them come from korea/china, so to say the lands which make still the most MMORPG and where I think, that this won’t change so quickly, as long there aren’t enough western companies to jump on the bandwagon to get into the MMO Market to make some serious competion in regard of quality and quantity of making new new games with the same level of developing themself further to come up always with new technologies, features ect. like the eastern companies push in yearly massive amounts of money into development exactly for this..

Wouldnt we have all those people there living in their constant competition, then the MMO market would be already totally stagnant and the only games basically on market now would be only WoW and GW2
—-

As I’ve mentioned earlier, all what I see, when looking at that list is “missed potential”.

Sure thing is, none of those listed games is perfect and there I have totally to agree with IndigoSundown, that every game that exists, be it already released games, like Vindictus (which I have started to play yesterday just to get some new inspiration influences on what GW2 could improve, something id suggest to the Devs to do to – play the other games, the best and most simple way to get new inspirations and to see, what you can improve in the own game), or upcoming games – none is perfect.

Every game has their pros and their cons. How much pros and cons a game ha is for every player different, because everybody likes somethign different, so you can’t take every pro and every con for general. Someone might like game X especially due to something, that someone else would take as a personal Con just as example.

To come back to the missed potential i keep speeking of… every of those listed up games has to me something, where those games shine in and where they are in my opinion much better or just fit better my personal tastes, where I think that ANet has yet missed the potentials to improve the game in significant ways that the whole game makes in the end as a result of all this more fun in general.

Lets start with my little comparison in the next posting to keep it overviewable.

My first thought is that there’s no way I would invest in an MMORPG without seeing if it fails in the first six months.

Also, the reason some people mentioned you using the word “throwed” is because it’s not a word.

Coming from console games to GW2 as the first MMO I’ve ever played when I see those other titles it spurs some interest, but the real threat to my playing GW2 is still console titles, when Fallout 4 comes out I’ll be gone till I finish it, A new version of Skyrim, I’ll be gone again, it’s been a year since I’ve touched my PS3 or Xbox I’m not itching for console time but the right game will make stop playing GW2 at least for the amount of time it takes me to play those titles. As far as other on-line titles not so much, I’m so far happy with GW2 and still I have lots of things to do in-game to keep me coming back.

Well these games for the most part are not out so they are worst then GW2 in that fact alone you can only know the truth worth of the games once they are full out and even then there is a time test of how often they update how often they deal with bugs how they deal with gold seller and how they deal with the communally. You can say any thing that is not out yet is better then every thing that came before it but it dose not hold any truth.
