I don’t like keg brawl, or crab toss, but I loved Aspect Arena, Sanctum Spring and Dragon Bash. If they were permanent and had achievements related to them, I would achieve them eventually as I would play several times a week, for weeks.

But they were/are temporal, and have achievements required for the meta, so I played in the optimal way specifically for achievements (in Sactum Sprint that’s easy, you just run to win, Aspect Arena I capped as much as I could, and only targeted crystal bearers).

IF the mini-games where not part of the meta achievement AND they were not temporary content, I bet we would see a lot less of “fixed games”. ANet want E-Sports? they are right there: Keg brawl, Dragon Bash, Aspect Arena, Sanctum Sprint. They can even organize an Olimpic event across servers!

Some of the mini-games are coming back on rotate depending on which candidate wins. I keep telling people, Anet has a love of reusing content, but nooooobody listens…

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Choosing an “answer” to agree with your opinion, biased much?

Many of you go on about how it is just a game without realizing it is just a game. That is why the achievement system is what’s wrong. You think human nature is what needs to be changed when it never will, because its human nature.

Your achievements are not your achievements, they are a number that people equate to experience. These problems didn’t exist when there was no achievement system. People did what was fun and that was that.

Achievements bring people into content they don’t consider fun because they reward players in ways not relating to that content. That’s the problem.

The ‘achievement system’ has been in the game since the beginning. People were doing them anyway. Using them as guides to help them find little things, using them as goals both long and short term, etc. People did the ones they wanted to do and were happy. They only difference now is that we get nice tidbits for the work we put in. There is no reason to change how you treat that list of achievements unless you are playing only for the shinies. Sure, if you are playing a reward centric game, you’re going to suddenly grind those APs and that is the issue. Greed.

I am speaking about MMOs in their entirety. Ones that didn’t have the system didn’t have the problem.

Again, this is a video game. You are setting out on a grand quest to change the way people behave, only a fool will think they can accomplish that. Video games are tailored for people’s entertainment. They are not designed to change human nature.

Don’t like the complaining, change the achievement system. When you give people a number that they can brag about, they are going to set out to get it as big as possible with as little effort as possible, particularly when it involves things that are not fun. When you introduce rewards, same problem.

People play video games to be entertained, not to be required to be morally ethical or do work.

“Please, you can look down on people without having to be physically above them.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”

well it changed how people perceived the achievement when the leaderboards started, once the daily gave you 5 points, now they can be 8 if you do everything, 12 if you add pvp daily.
but before the achievement reward, the content based achievement gave another boost to the urge of staying away from the permanent content in order to finish the new one since it wasn’t permanent.
and if you add chests (specific to that event) to that the urge is greater.
as i already said i’m happy with achievement reward, i’m less happy of achievement tied to temporary content for the sake of a useless leaderboard just to create some “fair” competition between players.

While I’m not intending to change human nature, it’s not far fetched to expect people to have some manners and not behave like spoiled children. Once upon a time such things as sportsmanship, good grace, and manners existed even with the game setting. It really should not be socially acceptable to throw those things out the window as we have done just because this ‘teh internetz.’

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

This is what happens when you add a prize to the achievements. Because the prize is available people want it right away. They feel they can’t wait. I’ve seen it with achievement titles as well. Someone mails someone else a bunch of gold so they can get the “Golden” title. Look at the “Combat Healer” title. Do you think most people with that title went out of their was rez 1000 other players? It is more likely they farmed downed NPCs.

Now there are chests with shineys tied to it and people “have” to have it right now.

So you are saying that resing NPC’s shouldn’t count? What about the players who boosted this title by having their friends suicide over and over simply because it was a lot faster than finding Npc’s to res?

In my opinion NPCs should not count. It would give the achievement much more merit. Dead NPCs are all over the place and rezing 1000 of them while playing normally in my opinion is not a major achievement. If someone want’s to jump off a ledge 1000 times so their friend can get the title so be it. I don’t really see that happening that much though as it would be rather time consuming. It’s too late though as changing the achievement would not work now that it is already in place.

I guess you didn’t see the bot’s doing it in Divinity’s Reach…..jump off edge near bank, WP right back to bank and repeat. these people were getting this achievement/title in 1 day where I earned it over a month or 2 from both players and npcs.

Btw saying resing 1k of npcs does not merit it is kind of like saying that most of the slayer or weapon master achievements are worthless as well since it’s 1k kills for both of those with the added fact that resing is a lot more boring/less rewarding than straight up killing.

I guess you would want 1k Player kills too for weapon master?

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I have seen more impact of this in the forum than in the game personally. As for moochers pleading to let them win and similar behaviour in mini-games: there is always block… or report if pleading turns into insults and threats.
