Will all dailies/monthlies and infinite sources be counted in this ranking? If so, it seems rather useless as it will be all about who has the most money to blow on salvaging then.

Could any developer please give us more information on this?

As we warned earlier this year, we’ll be closing out the infinitely repeatable achievements and capping them at a reasonable achievement number due to these rankings and the rewards we plan to add to total achievement points someday. These achievements will get capped with this release.

Daily/Monthly achievements won’t be changed.

I dont understand the point of adding this but keeping the ‘missable’ daily monthly. Ive never understood why those even existed.

You are basically excluding people who:
1. Didn’t start playing from day 1
2. Took a break from the game at certain points
3. May play alot but cant login daily 7 times a week

Achievements have always been an issue for me because i missed a few monthlys when i took a break at the end of last year. Some members of the community has started using achievements as a sort of gearscore to invite to groups. Which is wrong but nevertheless. i managed to complete the majority of PVE achievements when i came back so people didn’t immediatly assume i’m a beginner with my low score.

The achievement system in this game wont equal anything until all the meaningless daily/monthy/infinite points are gone. I haven’t encountered anything to the extreme we have in gw2 in other games.

@ColinJohanson: Really looking forward to this, I think it’s essential that goals be put in that aren’t dependent on constant dev time.

You have any idea if you guys will be able to save the actual salvage amounts even if they aren’t counted towards the AP score? Would be a shame to throw away 1.5 million salvages even if it’s just something people can see themselves. (Would be a nice idea to apply this to all capped achievements as well.)

Yeah now that we get reliably useful in game rewards from daily/monthlies(laurels jugs and coins rather than just coins in the beforetime), the infinitely missable points should probably be scrapped, maybe a completionist title track for number completed, but keep it bounded. We get good rewards for doing the daily monthly anyways so its not like anyone’ll avoid ’em.

Hmm did i misread perhaps.
Would ‘Daily/Monthly achievements won’t be changed.’ Mean the missables are kept. Or did he mean they are keeping the current system of daily/monthly but capping the amount of points its been possible to earn if you did every daily/monthly since release.

That’s very good news. How about the dailies + monthlies? They currently give a huge advantage over the newer players, is there any chance they will be deleted in the future to create a more “fair” achievement competition?

If they stay the same, newer players have absolutely no chance to ever get into the rankings as they will miss several thousand points by now.

Going to have to agree that having any repeatable achievements at all, including dailies/monthlies makes this pretty pointless.

And this is coming from someone who has played since launch and has almost every monthly/daily. Removing the other repeatables is a step forward though.

The achievement points are so many times manipulated and bugged and whirled around, there´s not one useful info about them anymore except for the cheated kitten on the website. It’s really sad that the achievement system got so rushed over. And the titles stay meaningless (for those who care) because you can’t still see your OWN name. So stupid.

Halloween and Winters day were also missable achievements.. Should we take those away as well? In my game life I have only missed 2 of my dailies and I for one think that’s a great achievement. Alot of people put in some hard work to make sure they got those points so it seems illogical to take those points away from them.

Events tend to be repeated yearly. Atleast we can assume that from other games. And are giving only a small amount of points.
The problem with GW2 is that you have alot of missables that are rewarded for just logging in daily and playing alittle.

Right now a casual player who just logged in for an hour each day and did his daily perhaps never doing dungeons/fractals/pvp/world completion etc. can have several thousand ‘achievement points’ over someone who is perhaps a hardcore game/plays alot who is doing lots of fractals/wvw high pvp rank etc. experienced in most content of the game but started playing a few months later. This doesnt sound like an achievement ranking at all..

Its literrally ‘pointless’ to have the current achievement system for newer players also as despite working hard to complete everything they will always be 2k+ behind most people no matter what they do.

You can argue that achievement points are useless anyway, but when it displays it on your character in party .. well , im sure we have all seen some of the ‘LFM CoF 3.5k+ ap’.

I would instantly block these people. You only make people kitten off about you. And I saw already 3 threads on reddit that most of the people getting tired about skipping and elitists who think they´re better then a player with less points then 3500. Thats really stupid. You can only doing dungeons and be an expert in it and not having that much points. I don’t want to play with selfish player, nobody should do this. So the points are pretty useless and even more useless when you use the points as skill indicator.

I have NEVER seen a party require a set amount of achievement points. If someone asks for that, the best bet would be to leave because these people are clearly not playing the game right and will pick apart everything a person does.

Now yes new players will always be a little behind, but it’s like that in every game. In the original guildwars I missed my first halloween event so I never got the boss pumpkin head. But I didn’t get upset over it. The people who were there earned it. All I could do was make the best of my time and do everything after that.

With all the stuff they are working on now, I am sure more options for achievement points will be available soon. WvW is a good example of that if you read the updated release notes. There will be tons of opportunities to make more.

P.s. I don’t think Anet will be repeating Holiday events. They are trying to create an evolving world so even if we see the mad king again, it might be under different circumstances.

The #1 guy will have to do 100% of the dailies every day for those extra few points to guarantee that spot. Sounds troublesome, but some people are just that hardcore to be #1.

In the end, the amount of achievement points will be tied to how many days you’ve actively played, giving no chance for a new account to ever catch up to a veteran. Just a years worth of dailies by itself is a huge gap (10 points a day, 365 days = 3650 points). Isn’t it basically the same thing as being able to buy points through salvaging (age vs gold)? On the other side however, what would be the point of an achievement scoreboard once a lot of people have 100%’d everything, though the 100%ers are usually a very small minority.

I don’t think this particular leaderboard is a good idea. The players who have 25k+ points through salvage kits have already cornered the top tiers and after the latest update removing that ability it will be extremely difficult for any normal player to catch up.

A possible fix would be to remove or exclude those points earned from using thousands of salvage kits. Though I realize that would be very annoying for those who did this trick, so perhaps they can keep those points but have those points specifically excluded from the leaderboard.

I’m trying not to make this sound like a complaint. Just trying to look at this from all sides.

I feel like the daily and monthly should stay, but should not give achievement points when this is introduced. I think it is still nice to have a daily and monthly for the bits of XP you can get and the silver, laurels, mystic coins, karma jugs and when lucky some extra item. But they are in themselves infinite achievements that goes against the removal of infinite achievements. So next to those fun items we are rewarded with, I feel they should not give achievement points and the ones we gathered should be removed. Then you will have the most fair leaderboards in my opinion.

I likely won’t be at the top, but I should be pretty near it I think. I currently have 7,138. Only 300 of them are from salvaging.

No idea what the cap will be for that, but I think is should definitely be under 500. Well really the best way they could do it would be to have it % based off your total points, something like 5%. So if you have 1,000 points you can have up to 50 additional points from salvaging (etc). I think this would be a great system that will expand with the life of the game and the players.

Risingashes himself suggested a linearily increasing salvage title which would drastically reduce the amount of achievements it gives.
tier 1: 100 salvages
tier 2: 200
tier 3: 300

His 25k points would be nerfed to 8000 or so. Personally, I support his suggestion.

Percentage based off of your total other points is way more elegant, better scaling, and is more fair for everyone with much harder to achieve ‘achievements’.

all the points obtained from repeatable achievements like “daily/monthly/hobby dungeon/hobby salvage/hobby tinkerer” and special event achievements should hopefully be excluded from the leaderboards to make it fair ground.

The points that people have collected from the abovementioned examples should be converted to some sort of rewards instead.

Majority seem to be in favour of keeping daily/monthly points for some odd reason.

I would rather see a leaderboard that is deceided by completionist things. 100% is going to take an immpossible amount of time to get especially if they add more monthly. Some of the WvW titles are basically undoable right now.

It would be great if the leaderboard is contesting over achievement points earned by things like PVP rank/Tournament wins/WvW/unique legendarys etc. Not just whoever logged in daily, those give too many points to play in a fixed way. 9 missable points for a daily, 5 points for legendary?

Why not just make them into a currency that we can spend…

Or tiered entry levels… like you need X points to have access to item Y (which can then have a karma/gold cost itself).

Either way this would be a more inclusive way to do this while still rewarding people for the achievements.

So is this our reward for our achievement points?

What I recall is that they mentioned four things that they were going to do.

Add reward for dailies/monthlies
Update dailies so you can pick/choose
Cap infinite rewards
Provide rewards for other types of achievements, not necessarily laurels

So… I look at this as just another step down the path.

Why?

Because without them, achievements points show what -unique- achievements you have earned in the game.

Those achievements give older players an “advantage” because newer players can never catch up in anyway. Besides if they have some repeatable achievement why not make everything repeatable? Why count how many times you salvaged something infinitely and not how many rabbits you killed?

Having some achievements infinite while others aren’t is dumb, plain and simple.

Edit:

And another reason:

As we warned earlier this year, we’ll be closing out the infinitely repeatable achievements and capping them at a reasonable achievement number due to these rankings and the rewards we plan to add to total achievement points someday.

Why should someone who was just salvaging staff get better rewards than someone who did many more -unique- activities? Fortunately Anet understand this, I just hope they limit the infinite achievements a LOT.

This would be a nice system if…

not achievments are still bugged ( tipps achievment for instance for me )
not most achievments are stupid to get ( kill achievments/weapon achievments)
not some are simply moeny based ( legendary / fashion)
there are some achievments actually are achievments ( only achievments atm for me is the achievment for completing the clocktower)

Since most of the achievments are purly gained through playing and not with doing hard stuff in the game. This system is kind of a grinding Achievment in my opignon.

Just an example I played to fractals scale 80 ( witch is currently the cap ) three months ago … And still I didn’t have the achievment for fractals completed… To get to scale 80 you need aprox 7*40 = 280 fractals completed out of 500… So I basicaly have beaten a dungeon on the hardest levels and still have less achievment points than some guys on lvl 20 I know.

This is just the Main Issue I have with the current achievment system/ I really hope they add hard rewarding ( in achievment points speaking ) achievment so that the system actually makes some sence:)

My point was that they said the reward would not be laurels. -Colin. Okay. In an interview on Forbes (March 12th 2013) Isaiah Cartwright alluded to the fact that there were already enough currencies in place and that the future would be more about polishing the current reward systems. So…..

I feel that a couple of the repeatable achievements would need to stay in.

I understand that new players will not be able to catch up to Veterans……but should they be able to? Also, if all repeatable achievements were removed from the total calculation, that would suggest there is a set number of achievement points that can be earned….and no more unless another achievement is added. What happens to the Leaderboard at that point? Do we see 10,000 people with the max number of achievement points? Woo hoo…..great leaderboard.

I am not the one you quoted, but I am concerned about new players because I want them to have a good experience as well so that they will stay around. When you join a new game and notice that you can never “catch up” it can put you off and make you leave the game. We are playing a MMO where playing with more is more fun than playing with few atleast for me.
