Again, ANet built up too much hype...
i totally understand the OP, for a feature patch that is supposed to resemble other MMOs big patchs, this is practically nothing.
What does other MMOs give?
It’s indeed an overhyped QoL/bug fix patch. None of the stuff they announced so far, outside of the wardrobe, and 40 new traits and how you unlock them, are actually new features.
My definition of new features is clearly different from ArenaNet developers:
- New weapons for all classes?
- New skills for all classes?
- New/missing gear attribute sets?
- New attributes?
- New mechanics that enhance existing gameplay or add to them?
No one is asking for new zones in a features patch, that’s something reserved for content patches. But to call this a features patch and generate silly amounts of marketing hype around it is just... Wrong.

Yea, today and yesterday’s blog posts have kind of been a let down in comparison to the hype. Really, they could have wrapped up last weeks and this weeks blog posts together. I think it’s the livestream schedule they want to do that’s made the posts this week seem so weak.

Just wait. “Removing restrictions” means NA <-> EU server guesting.
did you even read the blogpost, removing restrictions —> no repair costs, no trait change cost, less silver in champion boxes
They haven’t even released the “Removing Restrictions” blog yet. You’re thinking of the “Say Goodbye to Armor Repair Costs and Hello to Free Trait Resets” blog.
That blog post IS the Removing Restrictions post.
Just like how The Art of Combat became Rune and Sigil Changes That We Already Told You About Two Months Ago.
I don’t think you’re right on that at all. No where in the blog does it mention removing restrictions at all, plus we know there are more coming next week with more info on what’s coming.
Oh, and we also know they’re working on removing the profession restrictions on weapons such that we’ll ultimately have access to every weapon for every profession… just saying…
Although I’m not to impressed by this patch (expected some big spvp change), I must say, all of you guys talking about TESO makes me think that none of you has even tried the beta … let me just tell you, it’s bad. outright bad.
The game got daily 12k hits on mmorpg.com, 3 days before early acsess. GW2 got 141k by that time.
Just wait. “Removing restrictions” means NA <-> EU server guesting.

…why do you think people are talking about how ridiculous that blog post is?
This is a Quality of Life update, what do you expect? Just relax and enjoy the ride. At least things are getting better.
It’s like being handed free candy, and rejecting it because it’s not your favourite brand even though the candy tastes good.
Personally, everything they’ve mentioned, I like.
1) Consolidated dyes? Yes, please. Account wide? Nice.
2) Consolidated skins? Unexpected, but I like it. Account wide? Awesome.
3) Removing armour repair costs? Sure, I like that.
4) Unlocking traits so you can modify your build anywhere? Perfect.
All of this is stuff I’m liking. Hell, friends who prefer WoW and TOR have said that the new things being added to GW2 is fairly bold – the other MMOs aren’t even touching the idea of ‘shared skins’ and ‘shared dyes’. Sure, this isn’t going to benefit EVERYONE, but it doesn’t have to, either. Overall, I’m finding this patch to be quite pleasant.
People should be realistic and if they really think GW2 is so bad, why waste your time here. It just becoems ironic when they complain about Anet’s logic when they apparently don’t have on in the first place.
Even while I find some of the changes good things, I’m with the OP. Anets has promised things much greater almots one year ago (Aka new legendaryes, prec crafting, new game modes for pvp, and a LS that should cover an expansion).
Well… as we have seen so far, NOTHING of that has been made. In place of that, they added a ton of minor changes that should be on the game since release, and I need to be fair : Its not a surprise for anyone.
I recognize the effort putted into those changes, but is totally deception that they promise a castle and deliver a house in the garden.
Please ANET, or don’t promise things you are not going to do, or DO the things you promised to do.
Just wait. “Removing restrictions” means NA <-> EU server guesting.

What you forgot to take into account is that the new wardrobe and dye changes are going to be tied to the Gem Store.
Yeah, it could be great. However, until we know about how it interacts with the Gem Store, it could actually just be an improved way to monetize their game.

That was the removing restrictions blog actually. That is why people are expressing their displeasure. It was a huge let down of a blog post that seemingly has no connection to what the locked title actually was. Notice how removing restrictions is no longer in the list? That’s because this is it.
Perhaps, if anet doesn’t want people to speculate about upcoming blog posts, they shouldn’t give them promising titles, then wait 2 weeks to post all of them? What do you think was the point of all that? To get people speculating. Anet has only themselves to blame if their posts don’t live up to people’s hype.
This.
They could have told us five months ago what their plans were instead of dangling the carrot to keep players from jumping ship early.
Smart companies are very careful about pre-announcing plans that may change. How would you feel if they said that they were going to do something and then had to drop it from the plan (happens more often than you might realize)?

I’m not sure if you are trying to troll, or if you are too hopeful, but we’re pretty sure this was the “remove restrictions” blog.
http://dulfy.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/featurepackfeatured.jpg
Count them up and they add up to the right number.
And we don’t know what they are doing. They are also supposedly working on new legendaries, bar brawl and precursor hunt. Heard anything about that recently ?
Also what is with the EXTREMELY misleading blog post titles, the most recent blog was titled “removing restrictions”, that suggested a huge amount of possible changes. I think ANet deliberately did this to mislead players, to deliberately get there expectations high only to crush them.
I’d say hyperbole, but hyperbole is conveyed in such a way that the intent is not to be taken seriously. Anyway I highly doubt a company would purposefully create high expectations so that they can purposefully crush them. It’s not a sound business strategy. No I’m serious, alienating your client base is very bad business.
I love it…. people complain when the changes are bad. People complain when the changes are good because they aren’t as good as you had hoped. Really people. If you are just looking for a way to complain go do it somewhere else.
Forums are for feedback and feedback is not always positive.
In fact happy customers are usually the least likely to provide any feedback at all. So by it’s nature there’s already a bias toward the negative.
I don’t recall a lot of hype on Anet’s part. Oh sure there was some, but not tons. The speculation on here has been fun, that’s for sure.
That said, I’m not displeased with the coming update. Sure, a few of the posts weren’t what I was expecting (or hoping for), but that’s just how it goes. All and all, it’s mostly good stuff. It doesn’t all apply to me, but it’s still good. It’ll make other people happy.
ANet: Please just give us ninja patches from now on. I don’t understand it one bit but apparently you uber-hyped this patch to astronomical levels. shrug
In fairness these are great changes.
But, they came far to late.
Think about it – We get this patch which is nothing more then fixes we should have received last year then Most assume no new content at all until after the wvw season which is two months long.
So from now until at least June 2014 would be the next time we see any type of content.
Odd how that time line worked out to be right about the time Wild star is released.
Loyalty To None
Anet tends to have a problem matching their enthusiasm to what they are actually delivering, but i guess its the job of marketing to make things seem exciting.
The big deal changes are
new traits
sigil /rune
and the wardrobe(though its not going to be that big as is)
Its still a really good strong update. The main problem is its not really the major thing they have to deal with right now. The number one problem players are having is lack of new things to do in game.
So what they really want is like new dungeons, zones skills, traits, stories, etc.
of those this only gives us traits.
I think anet does a good job, but i think they forgot that eventually, no matter what you got to give people new content. While fixing old stuff is cool, its honestly not going to compare to having new things to do for most players.
I know LS was supposed to kind of be the solution for this, but many of the releases jsut didnt give you that feeling. And since the vast majority was temporary, returning players feel like nothing has changed.
I wouldn’t write off TESO so quickly. They seem to be willing to make big changes based on feedback and it already looks a lot different from the start of beta. They have junked being locked into newbie island for a boring 10 levels so that instead you now can immediately start exploring the open world, and they have added BODY-BLOCKING to PvE combat to give it more weight which is huge in my opinion. I wish ANet were as nimble in responding to player feedback with such dramatic changes.
I can see people QQing after the patch over various things, but for now, for what good it’s worth, I’m going to let it pass and enjoy the benefits regardless. Sure, they’re long overdue, but better late than never I suppose.
I’m happy with all of the changes they’ve discussed so far (aside from the nerfing events and champ loot) but, I think they’ve made a mistake holding off these changes in favour of lumping them all together for one big patch. Many changes are great and I’m thankful they are making them, but will they win back players that have left or are getting fed up with being strung along for so long? I have to go with no.

Every time I do Arah p3 (which is quite often), I see that WP that has no business being there. And every time I wonder why is that still not fixed.
And then I wander around, find an event and what would you know : it’s bugged. So at least for me (and some friends) new things aren’t a priority for us. Fixing old stuff is.
No YOU built too much hype. They said they’d be rolling out a few quality of life updates after Scarlet is done. Yeah trait resets were mentioned twice but that wasn’t that entire blog post so it’s fine.

With the assumption that we will see no content until at least June (which equates to after the wvw season 2 ends) Anet should be very weary of any new titles coming out.
People for lack of better terms will try anything while they are bored then the question becomes will they ever come back?
It’s far easier to keep a player then it is to get one back – that is something that Anet should consider when it goes this long without any tangible permanent content.
These changes are all great – but they will not win any players back because the game for all intents and purposes beyond the QoL stuff is almost EXACTLY the same as it was a year ago in terms of content.
Loyalty To None
The “big” changes are fixes to things most people see as bugs and problems. The feature patch does not introduce anything new or especially good, it just fixes what needed fixing.
Then don’t call it a feature patch.
No YOU built too much hype. They said they’d be rolling out a few quality of life updates after Scarlet is done. Yeah trait resets were mentioned twice but that wasn’t that entire blog post so it’s fine.
Anet wanted us to build up hype, else why take 2 weeks to post all these blogs, and give us ambiguous titles?

Hmm… perhaps I was wrong. OK, I concede the blog was initially poorly named yet the name was changed to something more accurate prior to release.
So someone heard about anet adding new content and features in the next updates, saying that they’re not sure about how to deliver this content “worth of an expansion”, if in the gemstore/ in game/paid box/LS; then you hear about some relevant quality of live features and improvements coming our way and everyone immediately thought about a boxed expansion – magically appearing out of nowhere? Like, classes and zones and weapons and hell knows what else? Help me understand. What did you want from this patch?
No, I refuse to believe people could’ve been so dense. I have a higher opinion of the humans.
I can’t help but enjoy these good improvements to my in-game quality of life and leave you to your whining, I guess.
Wow. Why are people always so negative? It hasn’t even arrived yet (the actual changes) and people are already whining about it. Why do people play a game that they find such faults with? I sure wouldn’t. I’d go play a game that I enjoyed and forget about the one I didn’t (I’ve done that with several of them).
Who says I do play? I don’t. For me GW2 is like this, for the last half year:
log in every 2 weeks, check the new story worth of 2 hours content TOP. Maybe log in the next day for some achievements if I’m interested in the reward. Wait two weeks.
Point is, if you look at an MMO (in general) at relase, and let’s say ~1.5 years later again, you’ll see the content HEAVILY increased, if not doubled or above. If you look at GW2 at relase, it’s a fantastic game with fantastic content… that won’t last forever, and 1.5 years later minimal fixes called as “features” definitly won’t keep me playing. It’s a nice change for those who are new to the game, or didn’t joined yet. Personally, if I’ve seen everything more than 10 times / thing, collected all the skins and transmuted them to good stats, I don’t have any motivation to play because a wardrobe is added.
They said they’d be rolling out a few quality of life updates after Scarlet is done.
ehm..
Due to the size and scope of the final four story releases in season one, the next round of major features will be bundled together into a large “feature only” release that will come after the first season of the Living World 2014 has finished.
Not complaining about the upcoming patch btw, I’m really looking forward to it. But what you said is not true, they did not just announce a few quality of life updates
They really did hype it up, especially with this blog list
~Sincerely, Scissors

well i knew they wouldnt be like expansion stuff, but i think at this time in the games life, what they needed was expansion stuff. I know it will probably be a long time before we see that type of content.
I think the best that people may have been hoping for is additional weapons for classes. But this patch doesnt surprise me at all, and i thought it would mostly good, till i read most of the current blog which is vague and makes it see, like overal methods of earning gold/items from events will be lowered. And Zommoros changes which i honestly think means less promotion of items.
If i had to guess, less chance for item promotion, and probably some reworked teir promotion returns, which will lead to a net nerf.
since the game was already pretty bad in terms of reward and item/gold grind that change sounds worrisome

Every blog has a different title once it has been unlocked that details the contents of the blog. The locked title is meant to be a snippet of what to expect it to be related to. The problem with this blog is that it has no relationship to restrictions being removed as the locked title did. I honestly think it likely that the original blog (that actually dealt with removing restrictions) got yanked and this piecemeal collection of random patch note snippets and a reiterating of previously released trait reset info was thrown together at the last minute, which is why it was not unlocked for several hours after the Account Bound blog was.

I’m surprised that they think this will stop the flood of players leaving for ESO.
Or that we needed to wait five+ months for these changes.
Flood? I beta-tested it. No way there will be a flood. The game, when I played it, sucked.

Truly I hope I am wrong but if rewards become even less then they are now – there simply isn’t enough game play let alone content to have me run on the hamster wheel for no cheese.

The point is: Yes, this is a great patch, and most of us like all the features in it, but most of it could have been implemented months earlier, and Arenanet made us speculate about there being more, unable to live up to that unnecessary hype.

See the thing is this.
What people fail to realize is sub games are less impacted by players not logging on then micro transaction games.
For the few months people try these new games – even if they don’t like them and don’t stay Anet makes absolutely zero money since the majority of their revenue is from the gem shop.
It’s been proven with sub games that people generally don’t cancel right away while trying other titles since subs are assumed reasonably affordable.
Between Teso and Wildstar GW2 will loose people just as other games do as well. Add into the fact that we will see no new content till at least june and people may stay gone a bit longer longer then you think.

i totally understand the OP, for a feature patch that is supposed to resemble other MMOs big patchs, this is practically nothing.
What does other MMOs give?
Well I’m currently playing an old MMO that I came from to here because it has a lot of content. Something that this game is lacking in right now. Having said that I am not on Anets case about it, it will come in time. And the way this game is (pretty much free to play) there is no worry about not playing this as much or as often as I normally would. Having said all that I am still playing here and am watching what’s coming here. There really is NO NEED for people to play the “anet better do something big or special or they will lose players” game because really, the way this game is designed, it’s just not needed.
The real question is how much of this feature patch was just a run-off of work for China’s release and how much is truly work being created and modified for the game itself?
Are they exclusive? I’m not sure. I just don’t get what dev work is being done from a coding perspective, unless the dev teams are mainly production support rather than release development.
The problem is how Anet advertised this patch. Expectations were to high because we aren´t really getting any permanent content at all. If you take a closer look, the only real content we got is this:
- Fractals (nice idea, but rewards still way to low on higher levels to be worth many players time)
- One dungeon path
- One new WvW queue map
- An empty zone because no real content in it
Now remember: this is the only new stuff since game launch, which is over 1,5 years ago. All the QoL changes that are coming now put the game in a state that it should have been in since release, but it isn´t new content.
In all honesty, things like account-bound legendaries hyped me up more than an expansion.
This is really the problem with the gaming industry these days. Everything has to be big. Huge bosses, massive expansions, blah, blah, enormous, blah.
Often its really the little things that makes a game good, and that’s largely forgotten.
Just please shut it for once and enjoy the changes they brought which we’ve been asking since beginning, oh my Dwaynna.
Thank you ANet for all the awesome changes!
So even after they make the game better and more approachable, you still complain. There is no satisfying some people.
I’ve had my issues with the direct this games been going (or not even moving, in terms of wvw and spvp), but these changes are great. They’re listening, and are acting. There’s hope for the future.
PvP modes are the “endgame” in every MMO.
Stop failing at PvE, start fixing PvP/WvW. Thank you.
I’m surprised that they think this will stop the flood of players leaving for ESO.

But on the flipped side of the coin, there’s also the advantage of GW2 being B2P instead of P2P. It’s the reason I’m not playing FF14.
I got the box, and some recent additions intrigue me. But the fact that I need to pay to check them out is a barrier to re-entry for me. With GW2, if an interesting update comes along, I’d probably jump in just to check them out, and maybe, if I like them enough, I’ll spend some money on gems.
Nothing new about that. ArenaNet has always been all about the hype train; even since before the game launched.
