If you don’t mind lots of grind and a gear treadmill, then the game will be ok for you. However, the WvW/sPvP population took a HUGE dive.

Also, there isn’t really that many different effective/viable builds per class right now, and lvl-ing to 80 without lvl-ing crafting with gold is also time-consuming comapred to gw1 (lower lvl zones are now very empty, you’ll be soloing for the most part).

Again, objectively speaking, if you’re fine with grind and a gear treadmill, you won’t regret it. That, or if you can get your hands on a lvl80 account with end-game gear.

Honestly it depends on what you want out of the game. Gw2 offers something different to most games, and you can enjoy most content even if you start out now :P

A MMO that’s 3 months old with no subscription fee. This game will be played by many for a long long long time just because of no sub. It’ll have many expansions and be around for years to come. My server is packed with players. I’ve played Rift so I know what a mmo looks like when it’s empty and dieing. I liked Rift a lot though, but it had no player base. It’s not perfect or anything, but it’s plenty good enough to be alive for awhile.

Thre is no grind per se.
Besides the legendary weapon grind (which is basically just a cosmetic skin without any in-game advantages) you get everything quick and easy.
So yeah, ignore whiners. Some people will complain about anything just for the sake of it.

Leveling is quite easy and fun, especially on your first one.

There are quite enough people to experience everything you need to. My (not the most popular one) server has almost 24\7 wvw presence with constant skrimishes and some zergs. So on the more populated servers things are even brighter.

Just chill and play. GW2 is worth it.

This, precisely.

Yes, there are issues the devs need to pay attention to. For example, a number of the classes need a little TLC. However, despite what your impression might be from reading all of the negativity expressed here, GW2 is a really good game. I’m mostly a single player RPG fan, and this is the only MMO to have ever held my attention for a sustained period of time.

Seriously, ignore the forums. I only come here if I’m in the mood for an eye rolling chuckle or two.

lmao ouch.

So true though.

@OP, it’s not a bad game exactly, you will get your $60 if you enjoy leveling characters at the very least.

However if you want an MMO that you will play for an extensive period of time there are far better ones out there.

This game was designed with players constantly dropping in and out.

It is PvE oriented like WoW but far less polished, balanced and a lot less content; you don’t pay a monthly fee and it shows.

Not at all. “The sky is falling” threads are typically what you find in official game forums. Every time a change is made there will be a subset of players that do not like it, and think that because they don’t like it then no one else must either and that means the game will be dead in a month. Enough logical fallacies to make your head spin.

Also the grind your fellow forum members are referring to is limited to the rarest stuff in the game that is largely aesthetic. And the devs have posted here and on reddit that they have things in the works to reduce that. The only “grindy” stuff that isn’t aesthetic would be the two ascended items in the game as of now, and devs have said they are working to change that also. I would wager that by the time you get to needing or wanting that stuff, it will have been fixed.

The gear treadmill that was mentioned doesn’t exist. There are several tiers: common, uncommon, masterwork, rare, exotic, ascended and legendary. Ascended items are being rolled out over time so the entire set isn’t available yet. This was recently added and players started screaming treadmill, even though devs told us “there will be no other grades of gear added in the foreseeable future.” Gear wise what the game has now is a road. There is a beginning and an end. Some people have just forgotten what the word treadmill means. They also let us know the ascended tier was a thing planned for launch that just wasn’t ready and rather than have a type of gear in game with an unknown function because nothing for it was completed yet, they just saved it for a (free) content patch later. So starting now, you are playing the game closer to how they envisioned it to be than we did.

Something else to keep in perspective, some players like to compare the content in the game and the polish to games that have been out for three, five, seven years. There are bugs, and if you rush through everything as fast as possible you will find yourself rolling new characters or repeating dungeons just because there isn’t thousands of hours of fresh content yet. If you compare the game, at six months old, to other major MMOs in their state at six months after launch: The amount of things to do and polish are very respectable.

That should cover most of the non-sense you see on the forum front page and were greeted with.

Enjoy the game. The players helping players section, and this thread in particular, https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OPERATION-UNION-Bringing-Players-Together/first#post406302, are good places to check if you are looking for people to play with.

Game forums are normally pretty bad but the only one that I can think of that compares to this is Diablo 3.

But yes, if you would prefer to play a game where the company spends all their resources on holiday celebrations instead of the actual game then this game is awesome.

Live team and content team are two separate departments. Same as in GW1. Holidays were just as elaborate (for the time), and new content still came out at a steady pace. I’m not sure you know well enough how the company allocates its resources to say they are wasting them in one place or another. But that information is out there if you want to educate yourself.

I would rather have working class skills than another money grab event tbh.

I don’t know how the company allocates its resources, but I can clearly observe they have much more resources allocated to seasonal events compared to what they use for bug fixes/polishing/PvE/PvP/WvW.

Elaborate holidays are cool, functional skills and good replayable content is better.

Each monthly 1 GB worth of content update IS part of the game, holiday or not. Many game forums have terrible communities full of whiners. They are pretty good games too. For example: Battlefield 3, Guild Wars 2, League of Legends, etc. But believe me, those are all wonderful games and will flourish for a long time to come (if the naysayers don’t dissuade others from playing).

OP:
No, the game is very much alive and well, with a lot of people playing…I’d guess second in the MMO market, in terms of concurrent playerbase compared to WoW. Rift would probably be third…a distant third.

In the beginning I was one of the most avid defenders of the game. After the November 15 patch, like 90% of this forum, I was livid with anger. I still am but I am making my peace with it. The game, at its core, is the best out there. None compare in graphics, world immersion(sp), MMO gameplay, combat(although TERA takes the cake hands down on this one), dungeons, etc. Im really liking the holiday events this game has to offer too.

It has its flaws, big big big big flaws. But its still better, in my opinion, than anything else out there. Maybe not as much as WoW because the developers didnt turn on their core playerbase.. But its close.

Such an interesting question. Has me wondering if the perfidious duplicity of marketing is involved. But perhaps it is sincere. If so, enjoy your guild invite, I’m sure you’ll get at least one, no doubt extolling the virtues of a new player friendly guild with lots of people who will just love doing dungeons with you, or whatever else your little heart desires.

Do I sound cynical? Well, that’s just because I am!

But no, it’s not too late. If you’re very social you will no doubt get plenty of guild invites and have lots of people to do all kinds of stuff with. Don’t look the gift manna from heaven in the mouth, just go with it.

If you are more antisocial, well, so am I, I get it. But it doesn’t mean it’s too late. There is no such thing as too late. This game won’t treat you a whole lot better than most MMOs to be sure if you aren’t a social creature, but you can still enjoy a lovely game world and some fun solo experiences.

The gear treadmill that was mentioned doesn’t exist.

Edited for brevity.

You are wrong.

Take the following into consideration:
1. According to anet, they have always planned to introduce Ascended gear.
2. According to anet, people reached legendary weapons and exotic weapons far faster than anticipated.
3. To offset #2, they introduce Ascended gear, which kind of contradicts #1. They also say that ascended is meant to bridge the gap between exotic and legendary. Exotic = Legendary. No bridge to gap. They have said this in many video interviews. Look them up. A fact. They went against their word here.
4. Assuming I dont care about the above three items, every so often..maybe 6+ months, they will introduce more ascended gear. Replacing your exotic gear. A step on the treadmill?
5. They say that they might increase the level cap for big expansions in the future. Along with that comes new gear with new stats and “ilvl”. Treadmill. A different form of treadmill, in that it is accompanied by new level, but treadmill nonetheless.

My point: It is a treadmill. They are going to increase the stats of items and upgrades in the future without increasing the stats of the gear itself. Still a treadmill, dont be naive.

With that said, still a great game even though I dont trust this developer at all to make good on their word.

That like saying reading a new story is a treadmill like thing or if they add any type of update its a type of treadmill by doing the new content.

If you do not truth them how can you trust any game to even work when you start it? Heck how can you even think that the game may not be here come the next day if you do not trust them? Lets put it this way your ONE person who has no more info then any other person other then the makers of the game how can WE trust you?

Ignore the forums, make your own decisions. Wintersday is coming and there will be plenty of events and what not you can participate in. Have fun, join a good guild, and most importantly make your own decisions about weither or not the game is “Dead”.

Any way ya treadmill is a compel lie that ppl have jumped on and cant get over the fact that they been proven WRONG. Its an ego thing or a trick they know to troll.

I think you’re the real troll here.

You’re not being creative with your ideas.

You’re not offering any ideas.

You’re not thinking clearly.

The game is very much alive. I have no problem getting dungeon groups, structured PvP is filled with people, WvW always has battles going on and there’s not a zone that is empty.

The forums are a bit of a cesspool with a few people who think just because they don’t enjoy the game, it must suck for everyone.

Well said, well said.

Don’t trust the forums at all, for anything, at all. There are a lot of uneducated people here.

Actually, don’t trust the internet at all.

Don’t go trusting educated people, either. Ever heard of Enron?
