“All permanent gathering tools will now be account bound rather than soulbound. For one week, account-bound versions of the Jack-in-the-Box Scythe and Bone Pick gathering tools will be available in the Services category of the Gem Store for 1000 gems each.
Previously purchased permanent gathering tools can be upgraded to account-bound versions by unequipping them and bringing them to a Black Lion Weapons Specialist.”

From today’s patch notes.
Thank you, ANet. The soulbinding was the sole reason I did not purchase these. Now that they are what I want them to be, I will

So thanks again.

Yep milking it…….1000 gems now is definitely not worth it, since we can buy full sets of tools for next several years for all toons for less. There’s paying for convenience and there’s being gouged for convenience. This is on par with the pet rock.

In terms of real life money → gems
You can buy 1 of each account….which equates to 3000, and simply pass them from character to character while you play….

Or you can buy one of each soulbound….which equates to 2400, and then multiply that for character you want a set on…

If you only have one character ever, the soulbound option does save you gems. However, if you’re like so many that have hollered for account binding these tools, it’s less expensive to get the account bound.

In terms of gold → gems
Yes, gold to gems conversions are outrageous, but some people will do it simply for the convenience. Some people are willing to pay for that convenience. It’s completely personal choice.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I am inclined to believe they did it because it was in high demand by their player base. There has been a loud cry from the community, in game and out, about wanting these account bound.

Understandably, they made the account bound versions slightly more expensive. You get more use out of it than it’s soulbound version, so it should cost more; however not drastically more so as to keep it appealing. Its standard business practice really. Ever bought a cell phone ‘bundle’ because the accessories were slightly cheaper that route? Lots of examples of this practice in every day life, if you take a step back and think about it.

They also listened to the players’ request to see Marjory’s and Kasmeer’s weapon skins directly purchasable. No RNG in the way. Definitely a step in the right direction, imo.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Cheaper or making them the same price at 800g – it’s a bad business decision.

The only logical move would be to increase the price. I’m actually surprised they only raised it a modest 200 gems.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but now that these are account bound, do they automatically appear as equipped on each of your toons, or do you still need to transfer the tools via your bank to each toon when you want to use it?

The reason I ask is that I gather almost daily on several toons, so I would go ahead and buy these tools for the sake of convenience, not as an investment. But convenience goes out the window if I have to waypoint to a bank before and after starting each gathering run so that I can get/put back my tools.

Can anyone answer this for me?

From the sounds of other comments, it’s free to upgrade tools you’ve already purchased… essentially grandfathering them in. Future tools will have a soulbound and an account bound version, with the account bound version being 200 gems more.

This is the impression I’m getting from the notes and what others seem to be saying. I’ll know in a few hours when I finally get home and can log on.

It’s referring to what Lanfear said about ANet listening to the players’ requesting the dagger and staff from the last LS to be purchasable directly instead of through the BLC.

I upgraded mine just now. It is indeed free to upgrade ones you already own. You trade them in at the Black Lion weapon vendor.

I would assume that future tools will only be account-bound, since what’s to stop me from buying the cheaper tool and then trading it in? If they pull that functionality from the vendor, they’ll have a bunch of people who don’t log in during the time it’s available and then can’t trade.

I would like the tools to go to all my characters, existing and new, via the mail after purchasing. Like an account upgrade with the hero’s band. It is so not worth the hassle for me with the amount of characters that I have, as I will be at a node without the tool at some point.

Still happy to see they make changes like this.

They can easily leave the functionality for the old tools, but not include the swap out feature for any future tools. Thus giving the player base the options of soul or account bound as they choose for future tools. There are even some that see no need to swap out the old soulbound to the new account bound even. I see nothing wrong with that, since it simply ‘grandfathered in’ the old tools to the account bound ability. This is not an unheard of tactic.

Gaile has suggested that if you have multiples of the same tool and write to support they may be willing to refund the extras that you’ve purchased.

For myself, I’ll keep the extras for the sake of convenience and not having to hand tools off, but for some this might be a very nice gesture from A-Net.
