Now, maybe the bosses at ArenaNet don’t care about veterans like me. Maybe they prefer new blood and would prefer if we just stayed away from the game. But if they do want us back, they’re gonna have to give us a lot of content. Doesn’t matter how.

Traditionally a player in your position is on the hunt for the latest and greatest skins. That was the paradigm in Guild Wars 1. In fact, there was no hunt for ascended gear back then. Your character ascended through the story line and then you purchased your end game gear for a nominal price. After that you spent a couple of weeks hunting down the superior runes that you wanted. From then on it was all about finding cooler gear models. As you pointed out, there are plenty of games out there that are more than happy to reset the gear treadmill for you every three months (WoW is a prime example). I, for one, am relieved that this isn’t one of those games. Try playing one of those games for a few years like I did, and then come back and tell me how much fun it was to have your character’s gear reset to sub-par status every three months.

For many people, playing dress up gets old quickly. Perpetual progress (ie, increasing caps/releasing stronger stuff, etc) while a turn off for others is what a large number of people PLAY MMO’s for. the sense of progress.

I for one already have the skins I want that aren’t legendaries, and I’ve only been playing a few months. I don’t want to play dress up with my characters because they’re already dressed very well until a precursor falls in my lap somehow.

I’m less concerned about it being an expansion and more concerned about what an expansion might bring to the table.

Let’s say that the level cap goes up. That may or may not be a problem for me, depending on how it’s handled. But I have 23 80s, all in max level gear.

If I have to gear them all up again, that’s not going to be fun.

I don’t think they will ever rise lvl cup because this game isn’t about that.

Pre launch Colin said that he was sure that level cap increase would occur.

They’ll have to execute that coming to the game very well to not alienate the players who gave them the benefit of the doubt when they added ascended.

New level cap would likely mean at least new ascended gear and possibly new legendary weapons. They would have to develop content for the higher levels and higher gear levels. Which would lead to players needing to get new gear for it.

And players could view that as a gear treadmill. And could penalize those who were taking a break potentially.

I agree that some portion of MMO players enjoy continual progression, but ideally none of them play GW2 because this game was marketed as not having that. Anyone who bought GW2 with the expectation of continual vertical progression for their characters should be disappointed.

Personally, i dont care if they release new content as an expansion or small releases every 2 weeks as long as it is free and not paid.
I can live with a model that charges for content unless you unlock with continous log ins (LS2 chapters).

I think it won’t be a full expansion just a LS continuation they will tell us how GW2 Great is due to lunch in China and how many Daily Logins they have (Daily rewards will boost this greatly while guilds disappear…) etc…

What i would want from and big patch or a game update would be:
1. Less grind like they promised when i bought the game.
2. RNG this is just stupid…
2. Mobs aggression now its working same as RNG…
3. Skills – Skills – Skills
4. Jade quarry battles from GW1 (Moba style pvp) – Loved it!!!!

55 Hit ting a group of mobs with a GS and landing a strike just on 3 is just dumb its not so Great anymore i hate target caps on skills that makes no sense….

6. The game is called Guild Wars but there is no “prestige” smth that tells you “man this guild is awesome” its just “After Team Prime and Team SALA were eliminated in the semifinals, the Abjured and European team the Civilized Gentlemen faced off in some of the most heart-stopping tournament matches in Guild Wars 2 history.” or just change name to Team Wars….

7. WvW make it less Zerg 2 win….

And the most important part what would i want too see is Anet work together on content and game, not like its now “teams” working on WvW, PvP, LS …..

Just my humble opinion.

I know it makes me the odd man out, but I’m quite satisfied with the monthly to bi-weekly updates of new content. No other game I’ve ever played gave me all that, for free, at such a pace without bugs that broke the game, so I kind of don’t get the complaints and demands for an expansion.

But, if one does come out, more power to them. Still, in my gut, I just know it’s not what some people are hoping to hear.

If prior statements last year are any indication . . . but, again, we’ll see in a few days. Either way, I also expect there to be a lot of rage on these forums.

The Living Story itself is not really a new type of content. It’s just more Personal Story.

And beyond the LS itself there hasn’t really been a huge amount of new permanent content.

My brother hasn’t really played in months. Because there hasn’t been any completely new content in ages. You can catch up on the lore via the Wiki or YouTube most likely.

Okay, all the new areas, achievements, bosses, fights, etc. aren’t new content. Got it. And no amount of new permanent content, besides Living Story which is the biggest plot pusher for new content. That doesn’t count either. Got that too.

Have you actually played other MMORPG’s, or is GW2 your first MMO? if you were able to compare with past experience of expansions in other games, you would see that the content GW2 has offered over two years pales in comparison to even low budget, small dev team anime MMO’s

Expansions consist of a PAID FOR dump of content that players finish in 1 month or less followed by 1 year of NOTHING ADDED.

The GW2 model definitely needs some additional types of new content to really flesh it out, but delivering a stream of content over the ENTIRE year and FOR FREE is 100% superior to an expansion in every single way from a consumer point of view.

It is going to depend highly on the timing. If it is going to be an expansion as the video in the last LS update hinted when will it be released? If the release date is late this year or next what is going to fill the time period in between? Are there any more chapters in the current LS or is this the end of the line until the expansion is released?

So many questions…..

You might want to replace, “a consumer,” with, “my,” in order to avoid giving the impression that you meant to speak for anyone other than yourself in this matter. What is better is completely subjective.

Why do people still believe that if Anet will release an expansion they will stop releasing Living Story?

Also people have to understand that an expansion is more about commercial success than it is about mere box sales. Expansions boost the game’s popularity and re-introduce the title in the market. People are simply starting to forget GW2. So wether you think LS is the best thing in the world or not, the game will slowly gets emptied as LS has proven itself to not be a model that attracts non-playing costumers.

PS. I forgot to mention that wether this is an expansion, LS3 or any other type of content Anet is prepearing. You can already prepeare yourself for people to rage. I have played WoW for years and despite what Blizzard did during their 10 years of running the game, I have almost never seen the forums ever positive. If someone was to judge WoW based on its’ forums, you would believe that the game has been long dead and Blizzard has never done a single good update since 2004.

Depends. It’s actually more likely that “free content” ends up worse.

By making the content “free”, that means they have to make their money somewhere else. That generally means cash shop. Without even a subscription, that further presses the necessity of cash shop focus.

I don’t think I need to elaborate how focusing more on shoving things into a cash shop and monetizing almost every aspect of the game is objectively bad for the consumers.

Remember, there’s no such thing as free content. Someone is paying for it. Even if it’s not you. And if it’s not you, then you have to rely on the other people who are paying for it to keep playing the game. Because when they stop, you lose everything.

This game is in need of a face lift. WvW is still a numbers game, sPVP is a horrible Meta, and PvE gets boring after killing Ghost#876544. You can only repeat the same crap so many times before its stagnant and old. And that is what GW2 is right now, Stagnant and old.

I think a wipe and reset is what the game needs. Level raise (would make many unhappy, due to the grinding done for ascended), 1-2 new Races/Classes, different direction with story (LS2 was extremely lack luster until the last 2-3 chapters. Totally let me down.) and more high stakes content (Read: Raids).

Things that can stay the same, Legendary can get upgraded to the new level cap (I would expect this in the very least). Crafting can still be capped at 500, just add in new discoveries/Recps. (so that you can grind to 85/90/100 and just craft your new set of gear, as GW2 was never really about Gear/Levels)

Things that MUST change, Game breaking Bugs (Mainly Competition breaking, WvW/sPvP ingame exploits that have been there since day 1), A new Game engine (Sorry but DX9 isn’t cutting it anymore). And client side exploiting protection/Bot protection.

Also, GW2.dat is 20GB…does it REALLY need to be 20GB? It feels like there is less now then there was in game when that dat file was 16.5GB. Perhaps its just cause 75% of GW2 bores me to death now…

While I do not really think an expansion is going to be released, I kinda of hope one is planned. If there was going to be an expansion release It would be sometime in Q3 or Q4 as that would be a year after the Asia release. Long time for a LS break don’t ya think?

. . .

Like I said before, some people are just never happy.

I never said there was no new content. Please find the comment that says that. I said not a HUGE amount of truly new content. Please read all of what I say before reacting. You obviously skimmed my post as you missed the adjective describing how much new content has been added to the game. You inferred I said none. I said there wasn’t a huge amount of new content. Which is not equal to none the last time I checked.

A few new bosses used new mechanics. Other bosses weren’t completely new.

Two new areas that are relatively small compared to other zones we have.

I can’t speak to PvP as I haven’t played it (lack of interest in it, I can’t think of anything that could push me to try PvP either).

What new WvW zones? If you’re putting EoTM separate, then you can’t claim new WvW zones.

Seasonal content was there pretty quickly, we had Halloween events a month after release. I wouldn’t put Seasonal content in with things that make up or don’t make up expansion level content as they made it pretty clear that it was part of the base game. Seasonal also isn’t permanent content. And I was talking permanent content.

New achievements are part of that not a huge amount of new types of content that I mentioned.

New types of content have been lacking via LS episodes.

New areas to explore, there have been a few, but not enough to really claim expansion level amount. And there haven’t been new areas for characters under level 80 since launch. This would help with the burn out of leveling if there were new areas to explore while leveling.

New classes, new skills, new weapons. We’ve had a few new skills. No new classes or weapons. I’m not talking skins, I’m talking actual weapons.

There just hasn’t been a huge amount of truly new content added to the game. When people only log in long enough to do the LS and the achievements, which for some takes only a day or two at max if even that, then that’s a sign that something majorly new needs to be added.

Increasing the level cap is a deal-breaker for me.
I’m fine with new weapons/classes as long as they are paired with a complete rebalance of all existing weapons and classes.
New races don’t interest me.
New maps are only good if they are designed well (like Silverwastes or Dry Top, we already have plenty of “hurry and level through this area, then never come back” maps).

In this day and age, expansions are no longer needed but instead represent a relic from a bygone period in gaming history. We can continuously add content in a natural expansion of the game without the need for a sudden upending of everything (with a large sticker price).

I disagree with that. Expansions are still a huge part of MMO’s. The living story is interesting but in gw2’s example, it hasn’t proven to even remotely replace an expansion. Look at the games content increase after 2 years and seasons of living story. How much? Through the living story, we only had 2 new maps, 8 story instances, 1 dungeon path, 2 new pvp maps?, 2 new world bosses. I don’t technically consider the beginning of Season 1 to be living story because it was so experimental and was so much more diverse in content compared to the narrowness of season 2. Southsun cove and fractals don’t count because they weren’t added as part of the living story.

However, both Southsun and Fractals are/were considered part of the Living World, which the Living Story is part of, therefore they should/need to be included in your count, just like the LS S1, even if it was only temporary…it was still new content. You can’t change facts to suit your needs, and in this case the facts(and announcements) prove you wrong.

Zaklex is right. You can’t ignore things added due to LS1. Just because it was experimental doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. The first expansion pack was experimental. Should the content added to that game, whatever it was, not be considered new content because expansion packs were experimental at that time?

And let’s give credit, ANet did listen when players asked for permanent content to come from LS seasons. We’ve gotten a lot more permanent content from LS2 than we did from LS1.

Finally, you didn’t understand the message I tried to send with my post. I tried to gently say that you made 23 characters, grinded them to max gear and now will block anything that works against your perfect world. Well, let me bring it to you -this is life, the more you have the more you have to pay attention to it.

This is not life this is a video game. A fantasy world where you can do the things you never could in real life. That kind of logic has no meaning here.

Having to regrind gear is not what Guild Wars is about, period.

I’m not going back and forth on a point where someone called themselves out when all they had to do was keep quiet and look wise instead. I’d rather be playing the game, than proving a point about measuring quantity of content, thank you.

Now excuse me while I play that new content that apparently isn’t huge either.

Dear lord you like to assume things.

Did I ever say I was unhappy with the amount of content released? Nope. Didn’t say I was happy either. But you just assumed that because I didn’t say I was happy that I was unhappy.

Just because the content released has not be a huge amount doesn’t mean I’m not happy with it. Just that do need to add a lot more truly new permanent content to the game to attract the veterans who left due to boredom back and to retain new players.

But you can’t really claim that we’ve had an expansion’s worth of new content added in either. Whether or not someone needs expansion level content added to the game every 6 months or so to be happy with a game is personal opinion.

I personally don’t need a lot of content to be happy since I jump from game to game. Unfortunately one of my breaks from the game came during LS1 so I missed a lot of that content. Oh well. My fault for not logging in. I’m glad that they made LS2 where it could be done after they’ve moved focus on. Not too thrilled with the pay if you aren’t online solution, but it serves a purpose (to try to get people to log in and do the LS episodes as they are released), so it’s not the end of the world.

“Thanks” to the communication philosophy we still do not know what LW really means for Arenanet. What role will it play in the new framework to expand GW2? A major or minor? Was Season 2 already the stage Arenanet wanted to reach and is happy with? Was the current season an additional test run and filler before “Heart of Thorns” was ready to be shipped based on the LW concept?

I really hope the panel on PAX will give us some answers and clear statements what LW will do and not do in the eyes of Arenanet. And at the end of the panel I really would like to know what we can expect from the LW concept in the future: Season-2-like stuff or something more.

3. If you go to “Best Burger Ever” and order a pizza, they aren’t going to make you happy. If people tell you not to order pizza at “Best Burger Ever” and you tell them that their argument is stupid… well, let’s just say you may need to look up the definition of “stupid”.

Incorrect analogy. Guild Wars 1 had expansions and this game was advertised as a Guild Wars game. By the time the game launched nobody knew we would be getting Living Story. As far as anyone knew, Guild Wars 2 would have gotten expansions just like Guild Wars 1 got them.

If Arenanet made clear from the very beginning the game would have no traditional expansions, then your argument would have made sense.

In a room full of people, I yell out, “Hey, stupid!” And you’re the only one who turns around. Did I call you stupid or did just do that yourself?

Think about it.

Bad analogy.

You didnt make a generic statement such as, “hey stupid,” you gave specific direction to your comment.

just like the LS S1, even if it was only temporary…it was still new content.

It was content. It is no longer content. Therefore, no content was added. To anyone who came in after it was removed, it never actually was content at all.

If I give you $1,000,000.00 and then punch you in the throat and take the money back, are you going to be happy that I gave you $1,000,000.00 (and a free throat punch!)?

If this is really an expansion and Anet plans to go with Living Story alongside expansions from now then I can see GW2 being a healthy game for a long-time as long as they deliver polished expansions.

yeah I agree
when they said "Join ArenaNet president and co-founder Mike O’Brien and Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson for an exclusive sneak peek at what’s next in Guild Wars 2 and be among the first to hear how we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe "I tried to understand what they really meant, if this is what they said, then it’s really something new!

If the plan is “paid expansion alongside free content between expansions”, then it wouldn’t be new at all.

Nothing is new in the MMO industry. It is all about how you implement the system. Otherwise, most of the systems have been out there in other games in the last 15 years.

Then I probably don’t know MMO world that much, which has LS story updates often and expansion?

The analogy is fine because REALITY trumps YOUR PERCEPTION OF IT.

What you expected is 100% irrelevant when compared to what has happened. You expected expansions, but none have been delivered. This means that your expectations are out of line with reality.

Continuing to expect reality to change itself to match your expectations leads to “cognitive dissonance”, which makes you unhappy despite getting exactly what you paid for. Now, ArenaNet could eventually release an expansion, but until they do you are still just a guy ordering pizza at a burger place and yelling at everyone who tells you to go down the road to Pizza Hut.

Except Arenanet did not say what release model they were going to use before launch. Yes they never said anything about expansions but they never said anything about Living Story either.

So a better analogy would be: Going to a restaurant that is called “restaurant”. You have no idea what kind of restaurant but still, it’s a restaurant. You go in, order a steak, then they suddenly change the name to Pizza Hut.

Given you’re previous posting about me, in this thread, I find this a more than a little ironic. But far be it from me to point that out. I’m sure a moderator will address it instead.

Regardless, I don’t believe anyone would dislike an ‘expansion’ or whatever it may be called in the future. But, still, we’ll see what the future hold as far as ANet’s intent and direction.

But, as always, I’m doubtful about a ‘boxed’ expansion given their previous statements.
