I like to think of myself as a hard-core casual.

I’m not particularly looking for challenge in an MMO, I’m looking for fun. I just want to sort of roam around and enjoy myself. I don’t mind occasional challenges, but I’m not always up for them.

I do a lot of everything. I bounce around a lot. I’m not too focused on just getting a legendary or just getting dungeon master, or just finishing my personal story. I’ll get there. When I feel like doing something, I do it.

I’m also a big fan of helping other people. Particularly but not limited to people in my guild. Anyone needs help with a dungeon or WvW or just finding a vista, I’m there.

I guess you could say I’m a social player, who enjoys the world for what it is, without putting too much pressure on the game to entertain me, because over the years I’ve learned to entertain myself.

Guild Wars 2, so far, is the only MMO that actually fits my play style.

I basically level characters. I don’t expect too much either, for the same reasons as you. My mother always said ‘only stupid people get bored, they don’t know how to entertain themselves’. The game has a lot of ways to have fun. I’ve noticed that a lot of players today race as fast as they can to max level then spend the next six months complaining on the forums about the lack of things to do. I call these players ‘premature ejaculators’ (probably got filtered) They don’t understand foreplay.

Pretty much.
I don’t like traditional MMO models because I feel too pressured to do certain things in a certain way- I also hate to be forced to play in groups because I despise online drama- be it guilds/ raids or whatever.
The moment I feel obligated, I’m gone.

In GW2 I play for fun and I do what I am in the mood for.
I like that I can pick my own goals and that nothing is forced on me.
The freedom of the world, especially when you have some max characters was quite staggering for me at the beginning.
I can never go back to playing a game where I feel like I’m on rails/ stuck in a box

Hmmm, possibly. I think I’m a bit more on the casual side of the spectrum, but fairly in the middle.

I think it’s important to know what satisfies your own personality. Some people play for the challenge, even if (or for some people especially if) it’s annoying and frustrating. Some people play for fun. I enjoy doing whatever satisfies my mood at the time I log in.

I don’t do a lot of everything. I do a bit of WvW, I haven’t really done sPvP except for when I’m messing around with my guildies (I die a lot cause I’m most used to using my warrior… and well warrior+sPvP…).

I’m more focused on working on a Legendary, but I’m not sweating the time to get it. I maybe make 2-3 runs a night in CoE for Charged Cores/Lodestones, but I enjoy it. I don’t farm CoF. I did like 4 runs in a row and then politely bowed out because it bored me to tears.

I do enjoy helping people. Guildies take priority, but if someone asks for help, I’m glad to lend a hand.

So yeah, I can’t say the playstyle is too far off. o_o)-b

The reason I started the topic is because I just got a PM from someone who thanked me for posting the stuff I do. Someone who doesn’t post on the forums apparently. It’s not the first time.

So I realize there are people out there who must share my play style. But we’re not necessarily the most vocal part of the player base.

Whenever I bring up my play style in other threads I’m told alternately that not everyone plays like me, most people don’t play like me or no one plays like me, so I thought I’d test the waters just to see.

I play to satisfy me. =P
I just do what I like to do, which lately doesn’t take me far from the starter zones. For me, that keeps a moderate income coming in. I really enjoy the Living Story content, and wherever that takes me. This game suits me. I am not the kind of person to seek out the best of whatever, unless it happens to drop. I’ve not bought any armor of the TP; to me, that’s just buying someone else’s gaming. I guess GW1 is to blame, lol. If I didn’t get something from playing the game there, I didn’t get it. Because trading with others was just too scary.

I don’t post as much as I would like to here on the forums. It feels like there are forum bullies here; where if you don’t ‘hate’ the game, you will be shot down in flames. I don’t know why you have to be a hater to be one of the ‘cool kids in town’. It is sad, really. Maybe it says something about the median age of posters, I am not sure.

Anyway….yes, Vayne, I play like you, and appreciate you being the non-haters (like me) ‘voice’ of the forum. ; )

Just take it slow and enjoy. Working on my 7th toon now, and I don’t use crafting to level quickly. Going for the minstrel as legendary, because I can’t be bothered getting one of those expensive precursors. My main doesn’t even have map completion yet, because I like to talk to most of the NPC. etc.
I probably passed the 1000 hours of GW2 yesterday and I’m still not bored. And it might come as a surprise for many people, but at no point I felt the game grindy, and at least 4 of my alts are almost fully exotic.

Huh, I consider myself relatively casual yet some of the folks here calling themselves hardcore make me look like a crazy person xD

- Love taking classes and builds to their logical extreme, taking them beyond simple theorycraft and maximising their effectiveness within my playstyle.
- In a similar vein I like sticking to a couple classes I really enjoy and utterly mastering them.
- Over 1,300 hours played.
- Have the gifts and gold, but not actually interested in any of the extant legendaries
- Fractal level 38

I just consider myself fairly casual because I’m always game to party with non veterans to show them the ropes, havn’t bothered to sit down and complete dungeon master (Though I am most the way there by accident) and don’t actively grind stuff for gold.

Having “mostly exotic” isn’t hardcore that’s undergearred in my books xD

I’m very similar, I think maybe it’s an age thing. :P

Before I joined my current guild (semi big – 2 week old with 300+ members) I would just roam around looking for trouble or find players to help rather than farm or any such boring thing. Now I do a bit of stuff with my guild, helping with map clears etc. I also am a bit of an achievement hunter I guess, all JP’s/Mini dungoens etc..

But yeah I don’t need gear treadmills or nonsence like that, legendary? No rush there it will come when it does.

Oh sometimes I like to go to Queensdale when bored, throw my commander icon up and annouce I’m doing a chest run where I take those who are interested (usually a good turn out) to the 7 chests in Queensdale. That’s always a fun time and a nice way to introduce new players to how friendly/helpful our community can be.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I’m getting to this stage with the forums. Very little substance, same old stuff going round and round.

And if you stay quiet and let everyone with a different opinion speak, ArenaNet will only listen to those with a different opinion and the game will be changed, from your point of view, for the worse.

ArenaNet has always had trouble with player feedback. They listen to what players want way more than they should. The overwhelming majority of players are not game designers, nor willing to stop and think on the long term about what the implications of what they want now. Hence why listening to them is more often than not a bad idea.

In GW1, for example, the second chapter, Factions, was almost completely designed based on what players had asked for. The GW1 forums were filled with people asking for instances in which they could party with a lot of players, more than the usual 7, to do something big like killing a dragon. Factions had exactly this – a mission in which 14 players got together to kill a dragon. People hated it.

The GW1 forums were filled with people asking for a rogue-like profession – a dual wielding, low armor and high damage stealth using profession. ArenaNet introduced the Assassins, who were the source of many of Guild Wars’ biggest issues in the following years.

A lot of people asked ArenaNet to release skills for each profession in each new chapter. Originally, ArenaNet had planned to only release skills for the 6 core professions, but since the players asked otherwise, they decided to release new skills for everyone in each chapter. This was an incredibly, incredibly stupid idea: by Chapter 5, ArenaNet would have to release skills for 14 professions, adding to the massive number of skills in GW1 that they would never possibly be able to balance.

In Guild Wars 2, people want to grind. Truth be said, I have the feeling that’s what the majority wants in game too, not only in the forum. But it’s easy to understand why all content released by ArenaNet has been so grind-focused: Fractals of the Mists and the quest to grind Agony, Southsun that was little more than big farming grounds with 200% Magic Find, and now the “farm holographic enemies” festival.

If you don’t want the game to become little more than a grind cesspool, you should speak now. Even if it means swiming in another cesspool.

“I think that players are starting to mature past the point of wanting to be on that
treadmill, of being in that obvious pattern of every time I catch up you are going to

I mostly roam about and have not really focused on leveling. I couldn’t even tell you what level any of my characters are right now aside from knowing one is in its 50s and the others are in L30 range.

The only time I have farmed has been during this Dragon Bash to get coffers but even that was fun for a little while, getting revenge on some mobs that used to give me troubles.

I have not done a dungeon yet because I’m so casual I’m still trying to master my skills, when to use certain ones, maximizing them, and of course have an alt in each profession training my hands to remember which keys for each professions. I don’t want to be that person in a dungeon that constantly gets killed or messes things up for everyone else.

Sometimes I go days with out playing and never log in just to do my daily. The game is pretty much something I do when I want to step out of real life activities for a little while and I enjoy it.

When I don’t feel like doing certain tasks I try to find different ways to create fun such as sponsoring map races for a prize, messing with the look of my gear with colors and transmute stones. I go to different areas to create my own vista/jump puzzle by trying to find areas that are not obvious to get to by jumping.

I do WvW from time to time but my current character levels put me at a pretty big disadvantage. I generally participate more when my team is focused on things that I can help with without face to face combat like supplies. I also found a fun way to help my team by being a decoy/set up an ambush. We gather a small group where they hide some place. Since I have the please kill me arrow I run about and find a small group of enemies. I never get in range for them to attack me but as soon as they see me I hit a turbo speed boost and basically lure them in to the ambush.

I don’t worry about money too much until I get to a place where I need to upgrade my gear. I actually give away a fair amount of money because when someone helps me I’ll mail them a silver or two as a thank you. I get helped a lot thank goodness.

I almost never use waypoints unless I’m dead. This allows me to see and find different things I might have missed on my way to the waypoint to start with. If I see a type of mob I have not dealt with before or very little I’l go out of my way to engage them. of course this often involves a new set of armor repairs.

Kind of lumped in with my thread the other day I have noticed a correlation between not getting myself involved in some of the negative in this forum and the amount I enjoy the game. There was a span when I got really involved in debating on here and I noticed I didn’t really feel like playing the game that often. The more I stepped back from it the more I seemed to enjoy my time in game.

These are just a few things I do. I’m probably about as casual as you can get but I really enjoy the game when I do log in.

Unfortunately the type of players that play simply to see lore, to watch the scenery and who aren’t interested in the rewards system at all are the minority. I place those players in the same category as RPers who have the same lack of concern for the rewards system or for the problems this game faces with it’s rewards. It’s not a bad thing at all but it doesn’t help with the fight to make the game the best it can be and to fix the problems the rest of the community who does care faces on a week to week basis.

I have the same wanderlust, no real focus when I get in there, I just go from place to place trying to finish my daily and gather a few things I know I’ll need. I do alot of events whenever I’m in a the area, but like the majority of the PVE players I expect that the rewards match the time spent on the game. You never hear dungeoneers saying that they love to run dungeons for just the boss fights, they are always in there with the purpose of getting rewarded, and that’s what most of us are talking about when we talk about the open world events not only not providing a reward that fits the time but not providing the types of rewards that are necessary to make the consumables/enhancements we need to play.

I’m extremely casual. I’ve wanted fishing in this game since before launch, which wouldn’t provide a single thing but ambient fun time and maybe a few cosmetics props and some achievements but I too know when somethings wrong with the rewards system.

I’m just happy they are trying to work on it.

Proof? Because you don’t really know this to be true. You only know the most vocal segment of the population.

I know you like to say stuff like this as fact, but it’s really just your opinion. And I’m guessing a lot of devs don’t share it…and they KNOW how people play.

I have a very relaxed outlook on the game myself. I kind of just do whatever I want to do at that moment. I’m a pretty big altaholic, yet I only have three level 80s. I like to ‘smell the roses’ and take my time rather then rush everything. Heck, I’ve played since release and both of the 80s I’ve had for a very long time aren’t even in full exotics. :P

So yes, I’d say that I probably play a lot like you, and I have to say it makes the game very enjoyable.

No offense but I suspect this might be because you’re too unfocused to get one single thing done. Which is in itself not a bad habit, but it does stretch out the content in GW2 “unnaturally”. I have no specific goals I’m working on and thats not a bad thing. Sure, I have goals like that I’m saving for a legendary….but as I do other things. In time I’ll be able to make it, I don’t need it this second.
I love they don’t set specific goals for me. I logon and do whatever I want in this big world they made with no consequence other than I’m actually enjoying myself in a game with no pressure.
I’ll fractals, dungeons, hit the meta-events, wander world maps to help people with sp’s and chain events, work on an achievement or two, dive into WvW a bit, sometimes I’ll just go do mindless mob grind while listening to tunes or watching TV or chatting with friends, or do stuff with my guild – all depends on what I feel like doing at any given time. I’m not saying GW2 is perfect, because it’s not. But it best fits the way I want to play an MMO and the most important part is that it’s fun for me to be in and be able to float around doing different things. It is a game after all.
GW2 fits my lifestyle pretty well too. I don’t have to treat it like a second job to keep up or schedule my life around raid times or anything of the sort.

LOL he has one and is working on a second… that’s not how it works. Most people aren’t obsessed with “best in slot” or whatever and ignore 90% of the game to reach some mythical finish line. My mother always said ‘only stupid people get bored, they don’t know how to entertain themselves’.

Your mother was entirely wrong. The higher the intelligence the more the need for external stimulation. This is why there is frequently a link between high natural intelligence and poor behaviour in children at schools. It is also the reason why big cats, elephants, primates etc frequently display pacing behaviour, aggression and self-harm in captivity.

It is also the reason why highly intelligent people are usually not found working in highly repetitive jobs such as assembly line work.

Rare is the day where I have to rush the daily, or jump about madly to kill my quota of event bosses because I am forced to. I WvW (badly but with enthusiasm). I do dungeons on occasion, and run with guild members from 1 or other of the guilds I belong to, as I see fit. There is no need to rush through content and I wonder why people do (they are different to me, is all). And I do not have a lot of time to play, although I play a lot according to my wife:-). Absolutely not. No one has to do it at all. Defending every action, whilst noble has only exasperated the issue ten fold because it keeps these threads in view longer than needed.

To answer the original question..I play this way, although even I’m finding this has finite life. Probably because I have over done the open world game so much, which is a testament to how enjoyable the pve experience is. Bizarrely I can’t seem to replicate this experience on any alts, which annoys me no end. For now, I roam whichever land takes my fancy or where I need mats. And rather than make it a grind, I try to make an adventure of it, regardless of how cheesy and corny that sounds

I’m a lot like that myself, but with a slight difference. You may recall from a thread or two of mine that you’ve posted in that I am rather unhappy with the lack of motivation to go for a legendary with my engineer, this isn’t because I am one of those players who feels like they must grind for the shiny right this instant, I just like having a goal lying around.

I’m not particularly focused on these goals, and certainly don’t pursue them doggedly like some other players. I just like to know that they’re there. That way if I ever find myself in the mood to “make some progress” I can just shrug and say “oh yeah; I was working on X” and do that for an hour or so. For me progress isn’t the be-all/end-all of MMOs, but rather another type of content I can play around with whenever I feel like doing it. So GW2’s cosmetic only “optional” progression is perfect for me, I just wish it was actually worth the time on my main.

I disagree. Whenever someone posts a negative comment, several others jump in to echo the OP, whether they really agree or not. Without any input from the “other side” it makes these posters feel like everyone agrees with them, and to a casual observer it may seem like the game experience is overwhelmingly negative.

Also, a lot of these complaints are based on unsubstantiated rumors, mistaken assumptions, and malicious lies. If the mistakes are legitimate, they should be corrected, and if trolling, those reading the forums should at least be alerted to the fact that what these posters are claiming is not true.

Absolutely not. No one has to do it at all. If ppl just let those whining and moaning have their say and not jump on their threads every 5 mins, their threads would die and the forums would be less cluttered and a lot more positive/constructive. Defending every action, whilst noble has only exasperated the issue ten fold because it keeps these threads in view longer than needed.

I disagree. Whenever someone posts a negative comment, several others jump in to echo the OP, whether they really agree or not. Without any input from the “other side” it makes these posters feel like everyone agrees with them, and to a casual observer it may seem like the game experience is overwhelmingly negative.

Yes for sure..but not over and over and over and over. Make a point sure, but if they don;t listen once, they aren’t going to listen after the 10th argument in as many minutes ^^

I see myself in everything you just said. I have played since release, and i think this is why i still enjoy the game. I joined a guild, i help my guildies level, i help them in dungeons and i just have fun together with them. I have played on 2 characters the whole the time and still love it.

1st january this year i started on my legendary. i am STILL not done with it. I need the precursor and some T6 mats. Im not in a hurry to get it. I just keep helping my guildies aka friends, i do WvW and have fun.

Heh, similar here.

I consider myself casual, although I tend to commit to one game at a time for months on end – GW2 is pretty much the only ongoing thing I play atm, apart from the odd singleplayer title that comes along with good story (ie bioshock infinite).

I’m a “main character” kind of person – don’t really care for alts due to the extra time, and also I like to perfect one class/role/build.

I don’t play a lot in terms of quantity/number of hours, but I do like to play well.

So you could say I’m sort of a “focused casual” – play one thing, play it well.
Same motto for RL tbh.

Same here; I play for fun, do what I want.

I burned out on dungeons/heroics/fractals/raids/operations/flashpoints….all of it…pvp….the drama in games ….

GW2 is all I play now, it allows me to just have fun with the various play styles of the classes.

MMOs became a job for me, and I got sick of the negative attitudes, the condescension and arrogance of “pros” ( who I had to associate with in the end game stuff). I did it all, and wanted to…or so I thought. The challenge eventually became a job, and no matter how many fun people I met there were always enough jerks to turn my stomach.

Most of my gaming friends are ok with that, but it reached a point where I wanted no more involvement with it.

And GW2 has so far been a pretty good match for how I feel now. I play solo for the most part and help ppl when I can. I just explore, try out different builds, do dynamic events. I go to the places that interest me. I have zero interest in dungeons or anything anymore. And I find I am enjoying things here a lot more than I have in other games, in the final analysis.

Yeah, honestly there’s nothing “hardcore” about what you said you like to do. People that are hardcore rush to get things done, want things as fast as possible, and are dedicated to a specific part of the game until they complete it. In other words, they focus on certain aspects of the game, giving it their undivided attention, until they finish so they can move on as quickly as possible. I know this because I’m a hardcore player myself, and I know that I focus on individual aspects of the game. Unfortunately, when I finished the most important aspects of the game, (hitting 80, getting all exotic/ascended, and getting everything I wanted), I found that there was nothing left in the game to hold my interest. I tried to become a casual gamer at first, but it was so boring that I instantly went to other games. So, no. I suppose I’m not a gamer like you

No offense but I suspect this might be because you’re too unfocused to get one single thing done. Which is in itself not a bad habit, but it does stretch out the content in GW2 “unnaturally”. I promise you, a few days after you manage to get a Legendary or whatever other goal you set yourself you’d be bored.

You’ve broken your promise. I’ve had a legendary for weeks now. I’m not bored. I’m not even close to bored. I’ve gotten dungeon master too. I’m STILL not bored.

Your move.

not to be a groupie :P
but Vayne does have a legendary

Okay, I didn’t know that. Still, if your goal is to not have a goal, of course there’s enjoyment to be had. Most people just try to achieve things methodically.

Most people don’t try to achieve things methodically. Most people who do just assume most people are like them. But that’s not a fact at all. That’s a statement you’d have a hard time proving.

At very least this thread should be an eye opener at just how many people don’t play that way.

It’s my style of playing, too. I do what I want to do. Ok, somethimes I do what my wife wants to do. I think I will have fun for years in GW2. Maybe I’ll have a legendary or two sometime in the future, if not then not. In other games, I do much more to get on instead to have fun.

We have this is common. I do what my wife wants to do in game too, most of the time anyway. lol

Most people believe most people think and act the same way they do, because it’s the right way to think/do things and who wants to be wrong?

When confronted with evidence to the contrary, the most common reaction is denial. So, you probably won’t open very many eyes.

You’ve said some untrue things but this is absolute at the bottom of the barrel. Intelligence doesn’t necessarily need to be spoon fed entertainment. SOME intelligent people can make their own entertainment.

What you’re confusing is something else with intelligence…and that’s drive. Some people are driven but many MANY intelligent people are not. A lot depends on their upbringing, their life experiences, their genes.

My intelligence tests quite high. I’m almost never bored. (and when I say quite high I mean just around the beginning’s of genius level). But I grew up in circumstances where I LEARNED to entertain myself, because when I grew up entertainment wasn’t spoon fed the way it is today. You had to think. Had to use your imagination. Had to figure out how to entertain yourself.

And once you get into that habit, external stimulation,. while nice, isn’t necessary.

This is actually what the quote is talking about. Smart people interact with the world and find ways to entertain themselves, stupid people sit back and demand the world entertain them. Unfortunately the latter method has become easier over the years, there’s a reason why television is called the “idiot box.”

I long ago used to be a forum posting frequenter.

The mood rarely strikes me now to debate with people. I just play online with my guild and enjoy myself.

I’m getting to this stage with the forums. Very little substance, same old stuff going round and round.

I don’t play Forum Wars like you, Vayne

It’s a dirty job…but someone has to do it. lol

The problem here is two fold (with regards to posting on negative threads). First of all I don’t post in all negative threads and sometimes I agree with the posts in negative threads. I don’t know white knight mindlessly.

By the same token I know that the biggest percentage of forum readers never post at all and I also know that repetition has an effect on how people think. You probably don’t read a thread and believe what’s being said but a whole lot of people do…and most of them will never post.

By providing a balancing point of view, I’m giving those people a chance to see both sides of the issue.

Yes I am just like you V. I take it easy while being focused, right now this is the only game I currently play that keeps me interested, I am in no hurry to rush content, and enjoy the game for what it is , a game, entertainment and nothing more, I just cannot understand some of the mentality of the “hardkore” players that constantly whine about the game, sure it has issues, but is in no way the wreck they claim, on the contrary.

As has been stated, no game will ever fulfill the emptiness in some peoples lives, that unending longing for something indeterminate will never be sated in videogames or in entertainment, for me its a sign of the times we live in, sad reflections of human beings, angry and bickering about nothing important just waiting for the next fix, addicts to everything, codependent on their imagined crutches, life looses meaning, so they need to consume everything, as everything is the same thing.

But I suppose part of growing up is looking at things from different perspectives, a game is just a game, leisure time is something one earns after hard work, entertainment is just a pastime, one chooses to make it worthwhile.
This game has allowed me to actually play, and have fun, running around, socializing, making like minded friends, and I mean dont get me wrong, Im focused, I want a legendary and map completion and all the cake and ice cream, but it will come in time, I don’t need it now, to feel I have accomplished something or am being rewarded, playing the game is my reward after stressing out in RL, my objective is to have fun, and in those aspects, GW2 has given me that, like few games have, imagine I feel this game has enormous amounts of content while some say it needs more…

Everything is a matter of perspective, back in the day games weren’t like this, this is a revolution, and we are all invited.
So to all like minded players, congratulations, we have been rewarded and some of us have gotten more than our initial 60 dollar investment, to those that cant have enough, let me tell you , you will never have enough, no amount of content will ever suffice, no game will ever fill your needs…

Cheers!

I am the wonder, I am the storm.
