Awful Female Human Heavy Armor Art Design
Fashion and what looks “good” are incredibly subjective.
As for Aion, ArenaNet and NCSoft are entirely different companies and Aion is a korean port game. NCSoft is the owner of ANet, doesn’t mean anything has to be similar.
I for one enjoy having a game where not every armour makes you half naked and glowing with about 100 different particle effects and auras.
All GW1 Warrior armor made females look like canned ham just as much as males. The only big outliers were gladiator and Vabian armor and men showed as much, if not more skin as the ladies on those.
Dervish was all just hooded monk robes with random doodads hanging off of chains theoretically meant to look like they would work as weapons when you spun around. None of it ever really approached anything that could be considered “heavy armor” except possibly the monument “samurai” set.
Why is it that all of it looks terrible. All of it, 100% of it.
Sure, if I wanted to look like the Terminator, Robocop, Judge Dredd, or Gregor Clegane in full armor, I’d be in hog heaven, but why isn’t there something a little more inspired? I mean, some of the sets of “heavy” female armor in GW1 for paragons and warriors looked really good. It’s pretty disappointing that they couldn’t do the same for the sequel.
I mean, Aion is under the same parent company as ArenaNet (NC Soft), and I’m not trying to compare the two since their art departments aren’t associated in any way, but why couldn’t our game take some cues from that perhaps.
What do you others think? Enjoy looking like Iron Man (Woman)?
Paragons had the worst Armor design I’ve seen in GW1 and maybe on any MMORPG to date. Except for Hayda, all her armors were awesome but she was a hero and her armor wasn’t available to players.
Funny that you mention Warriors, Primeval armor from GW1 is available in GW2 as well and in both games it’s one of the better Warrior sets. The Asuran from GW1 is the CoE armor in GW2 and there are others.
I think your “100%” is exaggerated, you should take a look at your wardrobe and you will find many sets in there.
Now, how can you call
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Barbaric_armor or http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gladiator_armor “Iron Man” is beyond me
My only problems with Female Human armor I have:
- Leggings – too many skirt like
- Boots – too many making a leg 3 times bigger
- Shoulder – way too big and too many are asymetric -and that applies to medium and light armor as well.
Anet gave birth to Gw2 – Anet killed Gw2.
Murican law 2015.
I prefer Black Widow over Iron Man
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Why is it that all of it looks terrible. All of it, 100% of it.
Because it’s in your opinion – only you can answer this question.
I think there are many great looking heavy armour skins for the ladies – especially the ones that are actually covering the whole body!
Personally, I prefer more covering for heavy armor because it’s less cheesy and more realistic. Despite that, there are armors in the game that are a big more traditional skimpy high-fantasy, so I’m not quite sure what you’re complaining about.
If anything I think most armor looks worse on males – too many of them have that awkward skirt thing that makes the models look kind of feminine. Although, that may be more an issue with the models than with the armor skins.
Funny, I feel like the medium armor makes mine look a little bad, compare to light and heavy, lol.
I would prefer to see less boob plates/cups with exposed thighs and more actual armor looking chest and pants pieces. In my opinion, boob plates/cups are really boring and uncreative.
Agreed… I want more “prostitution” clothing options for female heavy….
After all, the camera is behind my character
….. And Elementalist.
How can people, that play human complain that the armors don’t look good when there are races like charr, where armors have issues like stretching, clipping, poor texturing and generally look really bad.All of the armor sets that exist in the game except from cultural are made for humans.
I prefer my female to be wearing some clothes. Armors that expose too much skin. Especially heavy armor… Look stupid as kitten. It’s not so bad if you’re playing a lighty.
Most of it makes my guardian’s butt look too big. It’s a serious problem.
My warrior looks fabulous. Generally speaking, I like the female heavy armor options. The only one I really can’t stand is the hooker boots that come with the Phalanx heavy set.
If your looking for skimpy heavy armor outfits, the game has them. I myself prefer Anet’s take on female heavy armor, they actually make sense (almost all of ’em).
Check out the Arah armor, Gladiator and Pit Fighter armor sets.
I have that same problem like OP but then with back items, god they are ugly.
Haven’t seen any back item yet that comes close to my taste.
I would wear a cape but that’s not going to happen in gw2, and fluffy char backpacks, wooden night closets, and complete barbecue sets wearing on your back is just not my style. Therefore no back items for me

I wish we could get the male version of Phalanx on females.
That’s one of the few armor sets that bugs me a lot, because the female and male versions don’t even LOOK alike. They could have different names (IMO) and nobody would notice.

There are some normal back-pack style ones. Depending on the look.
Also quivers. I use Rox’s Quiver on my one ranger.
You think heavy is bad, take a look at medium.

There are a ton of back item options that aren’t the crafter back items or the fluffy backpacks. Spinal blades, Light of Dwayna, Chaos of Lyssa, Shadow of Grenth, black and white feather wings, Book of Secrets/Koss on Koss, Bowyer’s Delight, Rox’s Quiver, the fractal back piece, Mawdrey (or the Cultivated Vine for the slightly less fancy version), etc.
Omg agree. Aion has beautiful armor and so did GW1 (or at least a few pieces). Why do heavy females look like blocks? Also, let’s talk about medium armor trench coats. That got old fast.

Heavy female armor… looks like armor for the most part…
I’d have to go through and look at them again, but I recall most heavy armor on females looks like it’d actually protect you :P.
I’m curious— what did armor look like in Aion for female characters? I played it briefly, and I just remember my female gladiator looking like she was wearing glass the whole time.
There’s a lot of hideous heavy armor, don’t get me wrong, but there are some very solid choices.
T3 cultural heavy armor is a really really nice set, for one. The problem is that because there’s not many options that don’t look ridiculous, it’s tough to be original and look good at the same time.
So it’s my opinion that we really are in dire need of some new skins ._.
I think your complains have more to do with the lack of female sexualized armors in gw2, rather than a real problem of lack of inspiration or good designs.

A lot of the armor in the game actually has lines that are pretty “idealized” — trimmer waistlines and more pronounced chests (sometimes the dreaded “boobplate”) than are practical or maybe even possible in reality. Attached picture is an example: it’s obviously an attempt to depict full armor that still conveys a “feminine” figure. This is similar to the design of most of GW1’s warrior armor.
On top of that, there’s a lot of heavy armor with cutouts, bare thighs, &c., too. As well as a few “gladiator” style pieces.
What do you want, exactly? Armor that isn’t even armor by the thinnest margins? No thanks. :/
A good example of fully covered armor that has a good fantasy concept to it but can still appear feminine is Klaus Wittmann’s concept art for a character from the Witcher novels/video games. Take a look at the armor set on the far left. That is what I would love to see in Guild Wars 2:
I think he just wants more sexy heavy armors. Probably nicer ones. Though I like some of the ones they have in game currently, they could use a few more. But really heavy has it much better off. Try being medium. Medium has the least amount of skimpy armors in the game and far too many trench coats. There’s a reason you always see people in the same medium outfits over and over again. It’s because there aren’t enough good choices for sexy medium armor. Not that this really affects me as my main is a charr ranger and my other leather wearing character is a charr engie, but I feel for them.
While I personally like that heavy armor looks a bit heavier, it seems that the OP does not. If you want to be a heavy that looks like it’s wearing cloth (that’s at least how I see the aion stuff), then there are always outfits you can buy in the gem shop.

The one objective part of armor criticism is how >50% of the female armor is insanely skimpy. This looks stupid for light or medium armor but downright idiotic for heavy, as there’s no way this’d be any help in combat.
Now, even then it’d be acceptable – if the male armor looked similar. For many armor types, male and female armors don’t look like they’re part of the same set. Plus as I said, it looks stupid.
One would think someone could browse a wiki before purchasing a game to find out what to expect
Which is precisely why I won’t touch Mount & Blade with the proverbial ten-foot-pole. Yuck.
There really are skimpy options, you just need to go look around a bit. Personally, I prefer the ones that at least resemble actual armour. I’m fine with stylisation and some idealisation in order to avoid looking like a can of spam, but please don’t give anyone an incentive to start making metal bikinis and spraypaint chainmail. That’s what Aion and Co. are for.
Besides, GW2 has a lot of diversity regarding your armour choices (except maybe medium. I have found precisely one chest armour that is not a coat – sneakthief. If anyone knows another, I’m all ears…). If you’re norn, you can literally wear a thong into battle, so…

That’s armor?
How is that even considered ‘heavy’ or plate armor? Reminds me more of bedroom clothing or cloth then plate armor.

Light armor is cloth. It’s not meant truly to ‘tank’ blows in a sense.
Medium armor varies, I personally like to see it as ranging from able to take light hits to simply being all about speed (in character at least :P).
Course, through in enchantments or magical aids, and it gets more complicated.
However, I agree with the statement especially about ‘heavy armor’ (mainly plate)
I mean, Aion is under the same parent company as ArenaNet (NC Soft)…why couldn’t our game take some cues from that perhaps.
Thank god they didn’t.
I would love to see some more sexy shoes! More high heels.
short skits too since there are so many pants.
Someone hasnt visited Wardrobe as it seems…
There are plenty of armor choices…
But my personal concern is about most of the Shoulders and Boots, which are too large…
- Most shoulders should be ~25% smaller (Hellfire shoulders as an example).
- Most boots should be 10-15% smaller
Thank god taste in looks is subjective, and your is very heavily driven by sexualization.
Believe it or not, there are many who enjoy the fact that armor actually looks like armor and not some dress or skirt thrown over.
my sole factor on judging female armor is, does the armor have breasts? If yes, it is crap design, begging for an axe or sword to bight in and cleave the unfortunate victim in half. If no, good design, and max respect.

ppl who want sexualized armors are playing the wrong game
there are tons of Korean, Japanese MMO offer that
and i like GW2 heavy armor set, it doesnt make sense a heavy armor showing so much skin and provide huge defence
It is rare for a fantasy MMO to actually do some research for their armor and weapon designs. I think if they studied real armors more, the armors would look much better, and not look like a costume for a Lady Gaga concert.

A good mmo should provide both practical and skimpy option for players, for that i respect GW2, they do provide a large range of armors to mix and match.
this game have something that Anet can do also is dye your weapons and shield
and there gear looks great to
My only problems with Female Human armor I have:

Nonono, shoulders should be bigger, boots should be smaler, period. I kinda Agree with this thread.
GW1 armor designs >>> GW2 armor designs
(And by ‘armor’ that includes those made of cloth as well)
While I do think a lot of the heavy armour looks quite samey, the medium armour classes have it worse for different armour, as people have already pointed out.
If you’re wanting more “sexualized” armour, then the Norn female heavy cultural armours, will probably be more to your taste. I personally, would like to see more varied styles, especially for the medium armours, but not more sexualized. I’d prefer some really cool looking armours.

That’s like telling the dealer that you’d prefer the Honda civic that you’re looking at to be red and they recommend a red f-150 truck instead. Obviously people like the gameplay but would like the option for the aesthetics they prefer too.

Yeah, the female shoulders and models in general are tiny and puny looking compared to the males. It’s especially apparent in the norns. I also want the option to turn one or the other paulron off so i can make them asymetrical if i choose.

Except this isn’t being objective at all. I’ll list skimpy (truly skimpy at least by GW2 standards which is much more modest than every other fantasy (besides ESO and AoC) MMOs I’ve played) sets, blended sets and full coverage sets for you concerning armor (I won’t touch medium, that’s just 99.9% trenchcoat ugliness)
Skimpy (6) Which is: 12%
Grasping Dead
Gladiator
Barbaric
Pit Fighter

Flame Wrath

Scallywag
Phalanx

Covered (38) Which is: 76%
Ascalonian

Forgeman (tied with ugliest in my opinion)
Flame Leagion (tied with ugliest in my opinion)

Avenger’s
Protector’s

Draconic
Illustrious

Heavy Plate
Dark Templar

Radiant
Carapace
Luminescent
Atherblade
Primeval
Rampart
Please stop perpetuating the myth that GW2 heavy armors are skimpy. The reason you think they are is because the skimpy armors are preferred so you’re really seeing the same ones over and over again. Asking for variety should not be so opposed.
I debated about carapace and lumi given the one thigh you can see a little bit of, but over aesthetics (especially from behind) give the feel of full coverage to me.

That’s your opinion of course. There are many who disagree. Plus, it’s absolutely not true that 50% of medium armor is skimpy. Not even close. Light armor, sure they have lots. But not medium.
