Beggars in Guildwars 2
lol. Poor man’s legendary. Ive never had people begging for money from me though.
it’s something you see in everygame. though I not seen a lot of it here yet.
I’ve even heard of people scripting bots to beg for money…
It happens way less frequently in GW2 than at least one other major MMO. I’ve only had it happen in a whisper once. A couple days ago a stranger whispered me asking for 50 silver. I told him I never deigned to give a beggar less than one gold and considered his request a personal offense. That seemed to solve that problem.
Just tell them that you would like to help, but have no money to spare.
Mention the Claw of Jormag destroyed your home and you have a wife and two little kids to look after.
Ask them what is to become of you and your family.
Hitting them with RP on a non-RP realm usually has them quietly backing away.
This used to (and perhaps, still does) happen in WoW all the time. What I used to do was open the trade window and put 100 gold in to the text box. Then, I’d go and have a cigarette – maybe make a cup of coffee. On my return, more often than not, the guy was still there, whispering “Please Hit Trade… come on, pls… Hit trade…”.
I wish GW2 had a trading system just so I could do this.

That was hilarious, had to +1 that lol.
Haven’t seen any begging here, at least not like in Lineage II.
Edit: Fiennes, that’s just mean haha.
This happens in most mmos, you’re either new to mmos, or just wanted to talk about your GS.

Oh I’m sure . Although if i begged my Ele would beg in RP mode so that really wouldent work on her she’d just roll with the punches .
i agree this is common in alot of mmo and has been around since the early 90’s but as yet ive not seen anyone begging in this game, oh i mean ive had people needing help wiyth repairs in dungeons and such and i usually spare a few silver for that no problem. Im not one to go into why they dident bring the cash in the first place, just give and spread the love.. Flat out begging when u dont know someone and have not played at least 10 mins with them tho is a no no for me. i would say no also..
Tis only what you can do for all
It took FOREVER for it to happen to me, then suddenly. BAM. The 2g beggar.
I wish that it was a bannable offense. Report for harassment or something.
I’ve had 2 people ask me for money. One for a few silver and one for 2 gold. I talked for a few minutes to both of them and found neither really knew how to farm or that you should sell stuff on the trading post rather than vendering to an NPC. So if people are asking for money, it may be laziness or they may very likely be ignorant about how to make money and could use a little advice. Try talking to them and see what they say rather than just brushing them off. (Yeah, the first guy, after I spoke to him, I got the impression he was lazy but the second guy was truly clueless on what to do).
I remember in Everquest 2 being asked for money by newer players. It was because the market had inflated to prices that pretty much only supplied to twinks. It made me pretty depressed.
in Everquest we would tell beggers to target our Avatar and type /D .. for Donate!!! ….
(it actually starts a Duel)

You know, I didn’t know how to respond to him, but this… This is perfect!
I had this happen once. I answered someone that was asking for help in Queensdale, and as soon as I did, he/she started PMing me asking for gold for a few minutes.
As for Kingfisher’s RP response: WIN.
Seriously, do people actually give money to in game beggars? It’s not like its real life where people can actually need money because of bad luck or illness or whatever. If they don’t have money to buy geer for higher levels and they don’t want to go out in the big bad world, they can stick to the lower levels and hope for drops. It’s not like they will starve from lack of money.
Just a random scammer. I had someone ask me for 2g as well like 2 or 3 days ago.
“Whats that weapon you are using? Do you have 2g?”
I told him what the dagger was, and said, sure one sec. He’s still waiting.I bet these guys make 10 or 20 gold in the run of a week abusing overflows and taking advantage of kindness.
There’s a sucker born every minute.
Might be funny to give ’em 5 coppers. Good enough for a nearby WP. :P
Beggar was profession skill in Ultima online – you could talk to any NPC and they would give you a few copper.
I actually havent seen that happen yet.
I came from a game that guys would play as female characters get the skimpiest outfits and would say stuff like will censor censor censor censor for gold plzzzzz i got hacked!

Beggar still is a profession in UO … UO still alive and doing well

That’s a good point.
I might have to break out the Living Story and suggest you seek out one of those refugee camps in the Wayfarer Foothills or Diessa Plateau.
Or I could ask you to follow me to collect owed money. I’d pay you small amounts from my loot as you were really helping me quest around Tyria.
“Oh hey, look! Those skritt owe me some shinies. Let’s go talk to them.”
I wish you wold get a buff from being charitable to beggars like in another (SP)game i know

Oh – if only they would update that game with modern graphics – I wonder how today’s young gamers would cope with a sandbox environment?
I use to screw with beggars, but I always ended up blocking them in the end anyway. I eventually just skipped the middleman and went straight to blocking beggars immediately.
You got people in real-life asking for money who aren’t even homeless or jobless. Be vigilant and just say no.
this random stranger whispered me for 2 gold
…and my Profane-clad Human Mesmer female character just said: “Why do you think I’m standing on this corner?”

That game needs more than modern graphics to get with the times. It’s a good trip down nostalgia lane but there’s so much going on within it which just doesn’t fly too well these days to a larger audience. Frankly, more often than not there’s nothing to do . . . well, except fight PvP, with really limited forms of tactics which work.
As far as what young gamers would do with a sandbox? Have you heard perhaps of Minecraft? Or Dwarf Fortress? They play sandboxes, just no MMO has really had a sandbox feel to it . . . and UO doesn’t let you do as much as those other two games so they’re not as interesting in a sandbox way.
What I find surprising about the beggars in GW2 is that it took so long for me to run into any, and now every day there’s someone begging in LA map chat.
I’ve played a lot of EQ and some WoW, and begging was a pretty regular occurance in each – though WoW had way more beggars in it that I saw. I don’t give to beggars, but I have given free stuff to a couple of people in EQ.
One was a rogue who had been away from the game since the days of wearing banded mail armor (a crafted armor that was pretty poor by the time I started the game). He seemed like a good guy and wasn’t actually begging, so I gave him one of my bard’s illusion masks just because it had way more armor value than what he had. The other one couldn’t get a hold of a particular clicky to use in swarm kiting as it was very expensive, so I gave him a comparable item I’d outgrown. (Anyone who played a lot of EQ will probably recognize the references).
What’s the deal with making threads for something that barely happens in GW2?

They can’t ALL be about loot drops… :P
Besides, beggars will inspire more to beg. It’s small now, but it will likely grow.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

It’s quite obvious that they are the dragons’ new recruits.
(Story Spoiler Alert/Reference)
Undead beggars will start crawling out of the waters in Claw Island and overwhelming the defending players trying to keep them out of Lion’s Arch. Right now, it’s just the scouting parties hiding in plain sight.

What’s the deal with people asking total strangers for money? And starting at 2 gold? Seriously? I nearly fell out of my chair, when this random stranger whispered me for 2 gold.
Is the situation so bad that people are begging for money now or are they just lazy?
Kinda flattered though, I look rich…. with the poor man’s legendary, the Fractal GS.
Yep it is just that bad. two seconds looking at the TP at the prices to gear your toon in all exotics with runes will let you know just how bad it is.
I get them, so I offer to meet them at random locations all over the map. I keep “moving” and having them look for me while I do my own thing 2 zones away..
Love stringing the beggers along
It would be sweet that if they could build in that whenever anyone asks you for money if you could instantly enter PVP mode and slap them around. Then if/once you thrash them you can take one item from them of your choice.
Lol it happened in GW1 if anyone remembers going to Random Arenas and seeing dancing naked females with the names “Tip me plz” and “Tips pls”. They exist in almost every MMO I’ve played..

You know, if it was males (Norn, Charr, and the occasional Human), that MIGHT actually work on me and get a few coins.
Maybe. And it wouldn’t be gold.

Random Arenas? Try Kamadan in high-numbered districts.
People will choose to be beggars, unless it doesn’t work for them. Then they either get frustrated at not getting in easily or they get to work earning it themselves.

There is a sandbox game called Eve online.. it all in space though..
However, the stuff that goes on inside the game is hilarious. The only reason I played that game for 3 years +… the game play is not the most exciting, but all the back stabbing and scamming and griefing just made a great game.
It hasn’t happened to me yet in this game luckily, guess i’m always in hiding or look poor. In some darker countries, people get their limbs cut off by big evil organizations and kicked out there to beg for pity money.
I hardly ever pay attention to the chat window at all. Most of the time I just have it set on combat, so I guess if anybody has begged me, I missed.
yea people try their luck in all walks of life… seen this in other games to… beggers that all, tell them to get to a dungeon and move on
hehehe this is hilarious- I almost wish it would happen to me.
The closest experience I’ve had was when someone asked me for jute to finish up a crafting tier, the person is on my friends list though so it was a reasonable request.
I like to send people random stuff like trinkets or loot- so I guess I’m a reverse beggar
Beggars? Easy.
Beg at them before they beg at you!

I did this on my ele though it was more for reaction than for the money itself and i used a real name for her . She did have a back story for doing though . Her parents died during the searing when she was young ans she couldent get a job so this is the only way she had so make money .
Every MMO has such people.Don’t be so surprised when you meet them

Some person spun such a yarn to all in Divinitys Reach for so long that I felt sorry for them and gave them some cash. They promised to return it to me which I knew was a lie before they hit enter to lie about thanking me. They still haven’t returned it since months before I quit. Shock, horror.

Every online game I’ve ever played has beggars. I just block them, and I suggest never giving them anything. Otherwise they’ll just keep doing it.
Honestly the best way to get rid of beggars is to not react to them . to them the reaction is half the fun of it .
