Hi , i am still in the process of downloading GW2 , but i want to start off on the right foot , i am based in the U.K so therefore i will be playing on a EU server , but i am wondering which of the EU servers is a good server with a good balance of English speaking players please ?

I did consider going with a NA server but based on me been asleep when a lot of the games events where happening due to the Time difference , i figured best to pick a EU server .

Help and advice welcomed

Desolation.

They had the world first Tequatl kill:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzCNYbfHoRU

They had the world first Jungle Wurm kill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ_1F2hLDVo

And they are T1 in WvW. Top 3 in PvP and PvE, so all your needs will be met there and you won’t miss out on anything.

Servers only matter if you want to play wvw, otherwise it’s all megaservers, so everybody on EU is mixed together (with preferations though, so if you’d chose a German server you encounter more German speaking people). You can set your options to only read the language your game is in, for times in which the 10 languages in map chat are getting too much (people are mostly able to speak English though but they like to troll). Anyway if you go NA then you will have more lag.
Oh, and btw: I like Gunnar’s Hold a lot.

Desolation has elitist issues, you will never get into WvW due to Q times!

Come on over to Aurora glade, where its fun, not just about TRYING to be the best. :P

Thank you for the advice , with me been a newibie , i had a quick google on desolation , some people mentioned you can end up on "overflow " when doing popular events !?!? i presume due to been a very popular and busy server .

Can you hop between servers if you find a particular server to busy etc and take your characters with you , or are you stuck on the server you pick when you first play the game ?

Thank you for the advice

Desolation.

once you choose a server you have to pay in gems (c.q. real money) to transfer.
but it really doen’t matter wich server you choose, it only matters when you want to play WvW.
p.s. you can transfer to an other server for free, but you have to delete all your toons.

Any server which isn’t tagged with a language is officially English speaking.

Personally I’d recommend Desolation, Gandara or Piken Square.

Deso has been my home server since launch and I love it. as mention we tend to be good at organising for large group events and WvW, but I’ve never felt it to be elitist or difficult to play on. If you don’t want to join the organised groups you just don’t. But if you do you have the option. And in general I find people to be very friendly.

Gandara seems more chatty when I’ve guested there. Not necessarily more active but there’s more likely to be a random conversation going on in map chat, which can be fun sometimes.

Piken Square is the unofficial role-play server so you’re more likely to find people talking and acting in character there (especially in cities). They’re generally pretty friendly but may choose to pretend they have no idea what you’re talking about if you ask about out of character things like lag. But there’s a lot of other people too, it seems to be a popular server in general.

Desolation has elitist issues, you will never get into WvW due to Q times!

I’m on Desolation and rarely see a queue for WvW. Maybe Eternal Battlegrounds in the evening, but I prefer the Borderlands anyway.

You pay for transfers with gems and gems cost either gold or you can buy them with real money.

Any US server.

Forget EU if you want only English, or if you want a friendly community. US servers are the way to go.

Whatever game I play, I never go to EU servers.

Pretty much this, but substitute effectively for officially. I’m on Piken Square, and map chat is almost exclusively English. You sometimes get announcements from Polish, French or German guilds looking for members, and the occasional conversation in German or French, but that’s it.

Also, with the Megaserver, which server you choose really only counts for WvW, although it will have some influence (along with parties, guilds and friends lists) which players will be put into the same map instance as you.

(Edited because nitpicks.)

Doesn’t matter much, only when you do WvW.

However if you want particular English speaking the whole mega server pretty much killed that. You could easily be leveling, or going for a world boss, and end up in an overflow with a lot of chatty Frenchmen or Germans.
It’s not their fault they picked their own language server, but the megaserver lobbed you all together anyway.

Any server which isn’t tagged with a language is officially English speaking.

They’re officially international servers, not English speaking. If they were officially English they’d have [EN] after the name.
