Best and Worst of GW2 -- An Opinion
I’d say I’m proving a point in and between ours – not necessarily yours, nor mine. I’m saying that we’re both calling the whole community names although our points of view foundation is based on a minority of players.
Best: Charrs
Worst: Currently design of stealth
-Charr Thief-
It’s good to be bad!
I recently re-activated my account, and am having a pleasant time playing the game.
This is about as far as anyone ever gets going back to WoW. You recently re-activate, play a few weeks maybe a few months if you really have some willpower, then realize why you stopped playing in the first place. I’ve been there, all of my friends have been there, practically everyone I know that has “gone back to WoW” has raved about how great it is going back, then 3 weeks later they’re all playing single player games or LoL and talk about the latest MMO that’s coming out that is going to be the next big thing.
Why is this the reaction of people here at GW2? EVERY time I happen to mention that i am playing WoW while monitoring the goings on here, they feel compelled tyo point out.,." Oh she won’t be there long" or are you the same person that said the exact same thing about me On another thread a few weeks ago? It is almost as if some players feel they need to reassure themselves that " WoW is not worth it for anyone. If a Player leaves Gw2 to return for WoW, it cannot last long!!!!..They WILL get bored….they WILL Return… or they will play some single player game…or they will play another MMO!!!!!"
why???
Well umm..it’s a few weeks later..and Umm..I’m still having a great time at WoW. See what people that are always saying " it won’t last long" fail to say is….
Games change… some games improve, and some games get worse.
While I may have come here FROM WoW, there was a reason. Now I went back… and that is also for a reason.
WoW wasn’t as good when I left it as it is now. It is better now than it was when I left.
GW2 WAS good when i started here…then it got worse in MY opinion, defenitely less enjoyable. What I enjoy about MMO’s is Not viable in gw2, it IS In WoW, so i went back.
FACT: I consider it a better deal to pay a $15 Monthly to play World of Warcraft than play THIS game for free.
THAT should be a warning.
Anyway, I continue monitoring because I enjoyed Guild Wars. I like what it did, fact is i also re-activated my account with Guild Wars. That should ALSO say something.
I do hope that Anet gets it’s head out of the sand…
I’m in the same boat as you. I’m playing WoW and Wildstar, relegating Guild Wars 2 to ‘check on’ status. That’s really the great thing about the game. I can pop in whenever. Guild Wars 2 is sorely missing the reward structure that the other games have.
The best: WvW. The worst: WvW.
Best:
-Art design and the best dress-up MMO I’ve played (I’m being serious, if I had to choose between gear that looked awesome and ugly gear with higher stats, I’d go for the awesome-looking gear).
-Dynamic events.
-A combat system with a lot of potential an innovation behind it.
Worst:
-The most shallow combat customization I’ve ever seen in an AAA MMO, a 180 contrast from it’s prequel, of which the opposite could be said.
-Terrible storytelling, plots which doesn’t grab your interest at all.
-Balancing updates which do not happen anywhere near frequently enough.
-Zero sense of character progression after 80.
-Lack of expansion on core content.
-Dungeons. I don’t need to throw an essay at why they’re terribad.
I like where GW2 is in a lot of ways. It doesn’t feel like WoW Plus like so many other MMOs that just take that formula and try to spin it. It feels more like Ultima Online or Dark Age of Camelot, my MMO roots. There isn’t some nonstop stat inflating gear train to be on, or a constant parade of contrived bosses. When DAoC started to get really low on players I went over to WoW for awhile and raided tier 10 to tier 16. To me it never really felt like an MMORPG. It feels almost more like something along the lines of Candy Crush. Just give you this never ending chain of higher and higher stats to go for without ever actually making you more powerful, then charge you $15 a month to do it plus client and expansion fees. There just isn’t an enjoyable world there, everything is so static and dead. All the development focus is on instanced loot pinatas that barely anyone even seems to like. All the open world content is a 2 hour static quest chain that eventually unlocks a few repeatable fetch quests. GW2 scoffs at all of these concepts like the generation before WoW.
lol.. you really need to stop holding back, and tell us How you REALLY feel about World of Warcraft.
I recently re-activated my account, and am having a pleasant time playing the game. I enjoy that I can solo farm mats for my tradeskills, and don’t have Blizzard’s hands In My Pocket along each and every stage … I Like that what I craft has value to other players. I Like that it doesn’t cost me 11g to make a bag that then sells for 13g on the ah…if at all..since I might get undercut, and then suddenly..there is zero profit.
I Like that in THAT game, while there may be constant Upwardly upgrading gear dropping, the fact remains that before level cap, I don’t need to spend a single dime on gear. It drops off Mobs, or it is provided as a reward for quests.
Now. we can go back and forth about " My game is awesome, and wow sucks." from your end. But that seems childish to me.
You enjoy gw2 as it is, I enjoyed Gw2 as it used to be. Lately… I do not enjoy it as much, and the irony is… i have come to appreciate a Lot of things that WoW does well. At least well for me… things I enjoy are viable in WoW.
I can understand your enjoyment of Gw2. I can understand your desire to play it. What I fail to Understand is why you have to trash another game, or the people that play it. Especially since the free to play aspects of Gw2 are such, that a person can play BOTH.
Which leads me to the LAST thing I appreciate about World of warcraft, that 2 years On GW2 taught me to appreciate.
It’s community.
PS I cut my teeth on EverQuest. Make of that what you will.
you forgot to mention the constant neglect by Blizzard , even denial of the 70% dead servers where PUGing is impossible, the inability to complete “Legendary” quest due to lack of players, constantly taking things out that players enjoy ( in next expac , or should I say “shrink-wrap” culling abilities, no flying, destroying professions )
Yes Gw@ could do with opening the map more, and fixing the stupid trait system but I came from WoW ankitten EVER going back. For years people kept saying there would be a Wow killer, there is, Blizzard have given on on thier own game, final straw was selling insta-90’s ignoring 90% of the content
Back on topic..
Dynamic events rock and not having to group to help others!
Wish that there were not such huge zerg groups though or player attitudes to newer people and grinding so much in gw2 oh and of course the new trait system SUCKS the way you are supposed to unlock them either pricey as hell using SP that new players will need, or having to go to high lvl areas to get lvl 30’s traits ?
(edited by Kohlteth.3715)
I can’t understand why so many people are bashing the GW2 community saying it’s bad and all that. Looks like that you’ve actually spent so much time on here that you forgot how much worse the community is on other video games.
I came to GW2 from Dota 2 and CS:GO and the one thing that made me feel addicted to this game right on my second day around was the extremely friendly community around. And day after day I still meet friendly people or people who note that the community here is super friendly.
Maybe if you get off the General Discussions forums, where everyone pretty much only cries and complains, for a few days and get down on the game you might realize what an awesome community we have here.
Anyway, back on topic:
Best: GW2 in general, music, beauty of the game;
Worst: Traits system as it is at the moment.
This. I love the gw2 community.
Best: no competing for gathering nodes or tagging kills (except in massive events, thanks to the megaservers), Waypoints, Tybalt, artwork, community (my main guild, in particular), beautiful armor/weapon skins, dynamic combat system (I can move while casting), lack of trinity roles, Festival of the Four Winds, the sense of humor, all the details in NPC behavior/dialogue, Sanctum Sprint, Super Adventure Box, Josh Foreman, the gauntlet, the devs listening to the community and implementing ideas from the CDI threads, frequent updates with no sub, free to apply outfits, pink hair, the quaggan who says, “I’m a pi-wate!” during halloween, The Dreamer, music, mesmers who port to jumping puzzles… I seriously could go on. There’s a lot to like, here. Edit: I forgot Gaile Gray! And John Smith! And downscaling, so I’m never out of sync with my friends!
Worst: Quaggans (seriously, they’re so creepy, except the one I mentioned above), the current iteration of the trait system, townclothes as tonics, lack of precursor crafting, the fact that there’s no way to sort by armor class on the trading post- come on, ANET, this is basic stuff- the way Halloween recipes were totally borked, the design of the Crown Pavilion, disappointing storytelling, conditions, the total lack of communication from ANET about issues with the Feature Patch, the shameful Fractals reset and Chris Whiteside’s refusal to comment on it after promising he would, pet AI, engineers can’t use hammers, lack of a “do not disturb” status setting, lack of a real (effective) “invisible” setting, lack of any PvE location that is server specific (Lion’s Arch would be perfect for this), the trading post resetting my searches when I change tabs, message suppression and how it works, the lack of really compelling loot tables. Lots of room for improvement, too. Edit: I forgot Logan Thackery! And Treesus!

Because we can’t be angry about both?
(edited by Guhracie.3419)
Best
1 dynamic events
2 Graphics/Art
3 Music
worst
1 community
2 magic classes to weak in pve to low dps ( mesmer ) to weak in deff to
3 the new trait system
Best
1. Community – A lot of people list this as the worst, but I rather like the GW2 community especially in comparison to games such as League of Legends. Sure you get ragers and BM in PvP, but I mean it is PvP. Most of the game on the other hand has always seemed very good (especially if you are in a good guild)
2. Scenery – Guild Wars in general has always amazed me with its scenery and immersion. I’m not a role player, but I can understand why so many RPers play GW2.
3. Equal playing field – This is more for PvP, but I really like how the game is skill based. Although this has changed of late (Ascended armor, weapons, trinkets), the “no-gear grind” aspect of GW is what drew me to the original game in the first place.
Worst
1. Lack of Balance Updates – League of legends has over 100 champions. Riot releases balance patches at least every 2 weeks. GW2 has 8 classes. Anet releases a balance patch once every 6 months or more. Is it that they don’t know? Probably not. I just don’t think they care.
2. Skyhammer – Not even going to explain how bad this map is. Put it in hot joins and custom arenas. No one should be forced to play this game in Solo Q. But will this ever change? Probably not.
3. Lack of transparency – Almost every patch Anet makes changes to the game that they never release on the patch notes. This is incredibly annoying and frustrating for every player. Who do they think they are fooling by leaving things out of the patch notes? The devs should always let the players know what they are changing. Sure, stealth buff dungeon encounters (I don’t give a kitten, I rarely dungeon anyway), but kittening tell me about it so I can let newer players in my guild know about it.
Just my 2 cents. xD

Best:
On release, they had a clear vision, with a game designed with the players’ convenience in mind. Deposit collectables to bank from anywhere, shared experience and loot without needing to be in a party, bank accessible from crafting stations, etcetera.
All of these little touches were well thought out and made other MMOs look a little bit silly.
Worst:
Over time they lost that focus, and now whenever a new feature or piece of content is released, you can guarantee they will have spent more time working on monetisation strategies than player convenience and enjoyment. The focus is now on quick, easily developed content that they can attach some form of monetisation to.
This is the reason we’ve ended up with endless achievement hunts and a wardrobe system that charges for every change made.
It’s no longer about the players; it’s about the shareholders.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
OP, we really don’t need posts like this. Situation with material loot is already really bad. We don’t want another nerf.
Best: Graphics, in-game community, PvE leveling
Worst: Living Story Season 1, Obsolete dungeons, no mounts, no dueling, “open” world made up of small fenced off zones and funnels you to portals into next zone (makes world feel smaller to me).

You’re the minority my friend. I’ve been back to WoW. All of my friends have too. We all have left already, and we were hard-core WoW players back in the day. The longest of us lasted a month this time around. I think maybe one person logs on just to talk to friends and stand around.
I have no doubt you will rave about WoW until the day the servers close, and it’s your right to do so. But, fact is, it’s a shell of its former self.
There’s a reason pretty much every WoW player is looking for a new MMO to play…
Blizzard needs to hurry up and make a new MMO is what needs to happen quite honestly.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Best is the combat engine for WvW, even with all it’s flaws, overdone nerfs and useless or slow skills. The combo fields is a nice mechanic that could be pushed further if Anet wasn’t scared to change things.
Which brings us to the worse of GW2, Anet is scared to change it. WvW is the same old since release, which in turn makes it so that most servers have empty borderland maps except in Tier 1-2-3.
But the very worse in GW2 is that they dismissed the most important element of Guild Wars 1, proper GvG.
Best for me is the combat, it does have flaws, but I can never experience anything like it in other game (Wildstar is pretty close but it just doesn’t do it for me).
Worst, RNG, when the game was announced, I was completely amazed by the dungeon tokens, no more running the same dungeon 50 times to finally get the bow I needed, then get it stolen by someone else who pressed “need” instead of “greed”
Then with fractal came fractal skins, 2-3% chance to get a random skin after a 45 minutes run (level 50).
Just look at the “chance” from queen’s gauntlet, 0.1% chance of getting something good, else you get NOTHING. I made more money this year with this than last year with the 10 silver per bag, but it was much more enjoyable, and every time I killed a boss, I was rewarded, not once every 200 kills.
Best: the fact that the design of the game almost always gives players an incentive to cooperate rather than compete.
Worst: Systems/mechanics that got started and then were seemingly neglected or abandoned.
For me…
Best:
- Combat system.
- Character builds.
- Basic gameplay.
- Gorgeous environments to explore.
- Music.
- Great lore established from previous game.
In essence, a great foundation.
Worst:
- Severe lack of substantial new content.
- Severe lack of meaningful titles or achievements.
- Lack of prestigious items that aren’t simply gold grinds.
- Lack of great challenges.
- Severe lack of new pvp maps and game modes.
- Apparent lack of attention to pvp feedback (do they really think people like skyhammer?).
- Lack of good new lore.
- Lack of exploration of past lore.
- Lack of balance updates.
- Lack of attention to dungeons.
- Lack of attention to poor mechanics such as Defiant.
In essence, poor use of the great foundation the game started with.
(edited by Xenon.4537)
…the worse of GW2, Anet is scared to change it.
This pretty much sums up everything.
Best: Real time fights where you dont just watch animations play out, actual dodging and need for skill in combat rather then targeting an enemie and pushing a set up macro for a combo and watch pummeling till the enemie drops dead (or you). A reason to work together for a goal, vastly different races with fleshed out lore and design, obviosly a lot of love in the map, no P2W or P2P cept you count boosters or other convenient items like indestructable gathering tools p2w what i personally dont do cause you can get boosts from banners and tools from almost every vendor , devs who really REALLY want to make this work and do their best to make it happen.
Worst: the lack of class specific armor designs aswell the lack in quality for non human race armors, the massive amounts of clipping (and floating backpieces and shoulders if you play charr as i do) in said armors, the rather small skill set per class, beeing unable to assign skills to the weapon you use, the “dps is all that counts” mentality what reduces “accepted” builds for each class to far too few (for my taste), (in my opinion) not enough different weapon types alltogether in the game and for certain classes, hobosack issue (check engi forum.. ya will see what i mean), some minor balancing issues that will be prolly worked out anyways soon.
Best: Some people in the community
Worst: Some people in the community
:D
Best
- Open World: amazing artwork and atmosphere in most locations, very memorable and satisifying to explore
- Combat: my favorite of any MMO
- Character creation: not the most exciting, but better than most MMOs
- Get to the action quicker, doesn’t require a day’s commitment to get meaningful play
- The UI has a lot of QoL features
Worst
- Lack of RP functionality or impactful character choices. Remember all those choices we were given during character creation? Don’t matter. Character history, non-existent. The choice of Orders doesn’t open any new storylines – totally a missed opportunity.
- Lack of new zones, storylines, etc. I would love to explore Deldrimor Front or north of Divinity’s Reach. Anything really.
- Lack okitten man instances
- Lack of new instances
- No Guild halls
- No player housing
- Storywriting

I completely agree.
The most dire issues imo is:
- The lack of additional sPvP game modes
- The lack of other PvE “platforms” besides dungeons and the very similar FotM
- The lack of PvE content that provides an active challenge, as oppose to the current content that mostly comes down to just remembering the tactics, rather than a dynamic challenge.
* The lack of titles/items that requires varying degrees of greatly skillful play, rather than just grinding gold.
… Also the culture of exploiting, stacking and skipping in dungeons; The dungeons are actually rather enjoyable by themselves, but since everyone practices this sort of “cheating”, they become too trivial and boring. Although it seems like this is not a very popular opinion.
Cred to Latinkuro
Gw2 is a masterpiece at it’s foundation. Content-wise however…
Best: The Asuran Race!!
Worst: NO LABCOATS!!
Seriously did Norn make this game?
-signed Angry Asuran Army
Best: Active combat, Free-to-Play done right
Worst: The entire game revolves around using dat dodge button, ALL THE TIME. It gets boring.
Also, I’m a sucker for playing healer roles and I really miss it when playing this game for a while, its actually what drives me away eventually, every time.
Oh yeah, and those ugly kitten 1950s skirt models everywhere.
One of my friends recently returned to the game. He’s treating it like Skyrim – wandering the open world, gathering, making his own quests and goals, finding loot, and hidden places. It’s all there. That’s one of the best things about this game – its open world. At 80, it really opens up for you. Craft special armor for yourself, find your own adventures. I only wish this game would add more content – the vanilla game was amazing and I still love coming to it. We’ll see with season two.
That my friend, is a perfect definition of how to enjoy this game. And if you ever get slightly bored you can just go have some epic battles in wvw or test your skills in pvp.
Join us and RISE to the challenge!

Totally agree. I just wish they’d add a bit more RP stuff in the game to accentuate that. I don’t want this game to be about raiding – I want it to be about grabbing a few friends and exploring Tyria. If they can do that this season, all the better. I still love the world that released at launch.

As regards to WoW, I think you and I are playing two different games. I was playing it last night, and have been for a few weeks, not sure when you last played the game you played. But your description of WoW, while very pessimistic in outlook, does not match my experience, and I am pretty sure, Mine is more current, and My memory of the game less colored by negative experiences or perceptions.
So Not Knowing when you last played, or the status of the game at that time, since I was Playing Gw2, for the past couple of years. All I can say is, that yes, your perceptions of the game may:
1: be outdated.
2: biased.
And therefore, I prefer to believe my own eyes, instead of your words.

Firstly about being in the Minority. That is only conjecture on your part. All I can consider is what my eyes tell me. And while I am certain you are sincere in your beliefs, I am sure both of us suffer from some Confirmation Bias.
Secondly:

You will see that the very same can be said about Gw2, and it has the very same demonstrable truth to it, as your previous statement… None to speak of, since it is simply your opinion. My opinion ..is also NOT demonstrably true.
Lastly appealing to the masses. What you and your friends enjoy, says nothing. it just says what you and your friends enjoy. And do not change anything about Gw2 or wow.
Which leads me to what I consider the Worst about Gw2.
it’s community. Many players feel compelled to white knight the game whenever someome mentions another game, specifically WoW. Not just White Knight Gw2, but also trash WoW. The fact that both games have existed together for 2 years, and will continue to exist together, as long as BOTH Publishing companies keep their collective heads out of …the sand…. does Not seem to be a consideration for some players of gw2.
Which leads me to an observation. The number of times that players of WoW trash gw2…compared to the Number of times Players of Gw2 trash WoW.
I think that may say a Lot about the white knights in Gw2.
WoW has been the bellwether for MMO’s for a long time. That status invites comparisons, both good and bad. There is at least some WoW-bashing in virtually every other MMO’s forum. There is even WoW-bashing in the WoW forums.
GW2 is a wannabe game, like every MMO other than WoW. If you want to compare game defense in GW2 v. another MMO’s, you’d need to compare it to games other than WoW. WoW’s special status means that its defenders don’t need to bash other games with opinions — all they need to do is point at numbers.

Except I am not the one bashing gw2. All I do is say " in it’s current iteration gw2 is Not as enjoyable for me ..and here is why. Since it is not as enjoyable, I went back to WoW, and I also play Guild Wars."
and then I get responses Likr the above.
Why would i compare Gw2 to any game other than WoW? I am playing WoW.
Secondly, since WoW is the game that I am currenly enjoying for the very things that I enjoy, while Gw2 is not providing me with the same enjoyable experience, does it make sense for me to compare it to say " ESO" which i don’t play? Archage which i know Nothing about… or Wildstar which i will not touch with a 20 foot pole?
I was Not comparing it to say “Gw2 sucks” I was saying " this aspect of the game is Not enjoyable for me…so i went back to wow, because they have thi s aspect of the game In a way that is enjoyable for me in WoW, and Not in Gw2."
Now… as Much as players of gw2 may not Like being compared to WoW, it comes with the territory. And just because WoW is the 800 lb gorilla in the room, doesn’;t mean that gw2 white knights are excused for WoW bashing. it puts them in a negative light… and it doesn’t seem to be either a fair representation of perceptions… or a reasoned argument.
it comes across as negative, insecure, hating just because…
