Camera Smoothing
I noticed I was standing near a chair, just in front of it in the game, the chair itself was snapping the camera close in. Objects shouldn’t snap the camera in as if it was a wall.
The camera is VERY bad near walls and in enclosed spaces. It also doesn’t zoom back as far as it should. Have to bring up WOW like some others, but look there for how to do it right. No one will fault a company for doing what other companies do well. UI and control has always been a strong suit of WOW. trying not to do something like it just to be different is like trying to reinvent the wheel. There’s no point when someone has already done it essentially perfect.
The camera in GW2 should never be the same in WoW or you could look inside keeps etc. This would be at least as gamebreaking as the player culling currently in the game. Also, do not expect GW2 to have the same options as a traditional mmo. The design of both games are very different and GW2 aims to be a more action-oriented experience than WoW. A higher FOW and a higher zoom would kill PvP.
did you know what killing pvp? having headache from low FOV
yeah
Thank god, you’re awesome. Another camera issue is the low hieght of the camera centre-point (near the chest). I would like that moved higher up the Y-axis. Thanks
This should really be number one priority right now.
Also increase distance view, extremely important as well. I’m missing on a lot of beautiful views around me because I’m sokittenclose to my character. The distance limit should be increased like 5 times or so.
And I’m not even talking about WvW. I can’t see where I am or what is happening around me cause there is a lot of height differences and I’m to close to my character to see beyond that.
Weird that noone noticed this before release.
did you know what killing pvp? having headache from low FOV
yeah
this obviously got my vote ^
for the ones that dont understand the complaining about the FOV do this:
Set your game to windowed mode (prefferbly without your monitor scaling/strecthing it) now make it half the height of your screen and as wide as it can go. Play for at least 20 minutes like this , pref. a little longer THEN switch back to your fullscreen/resolution.
You will understand instantly.
Mastermind, unfortunately, we ALL noticed it before release. During all the Beta weekends, camera issues has been one of the most active threads on the forums each time.
It simply didn’t do a thing.
I love the camera smoothing. It works great if you have a super-fast rig. However, on my laptop – it is anything but great. A simple option to turn it on/off is all that you need.
I really don’t have any problems with the movement of the camera, but I do really have issues with some of its other behaviors.
Mostly the way I stop shooting at my current target, if I look in the other direction… that one has killed me more than once. I’m strafing and moving and dodging, taking full advantage of the awesome dynamic combat, and looking to make sure nothing ELSE is in the direction I’m going. And poof… I lose my target. Argh.
I also really hate the way dense foliage completely obscures MY view, when my CHARACTER could see clearly. The lack of fully first-person is a major issue here. A reasonable fix would be to make objects between the camera & the character semi-transparent.
And, of course, providing a fully first-person view.
did you know what killing pvp? having headache from low FOV
yeah
Maybe you shouldn’t sit right in front of a huge screen, but keep the recommended distance to your monitor. You get a headache if you sit too close or too far from a monitor.
Turn off auto targeting.
as for the foliage i have never seen a third person game remove such things according to what the character COULD see at least certaintly not in a mmo.
Only read OP. And may I say hurrah? Anyways, I would like an option to completely turn off mouse smoothing, I hate it, can not stand it.
This is awesome and great to hear something is being done about the camera.
My (and many other’s) priorities while you’re in that code:
1) FoV Slider: Current minimum to 100 degrees maximum would be great.
2) Free-Look/Mouse-Look Toggle: This would basically lock view at dead center and invert the right-mouse-button functionality. Free-Look = Current RMB functionality, Mouse-Look = RMB engages cursor and Free-Look for environment interaction.
3) True First-Person View: Just let the zoom in go all the way in and fade the player model 100%. It’s almost there now, just increase the fade and let the zoom go into the model’s head.
3) Fix that bouncy camera when things are behind the camera. Please!
Thanks!
EDIT: Eh… typos.
Currently the FOV is set to a fixed ratio which means it will always be the excact same too small fov on any resolution. I really o not see why hey do not just adjust the ratio.
This is great news that the camera issue(s) are going to be addressed. This is hands down going to be the biggest improvement to the game.
I’m not an expert, but it appears the FOV is far too limitted, making for a claustrophic feeling while playing. Although I don’t exactly get dizzy or nausiated, I do find myself leaning into the screen and getting a stiff neck. Being comfortable while playing the game, while subtle, is of top importance.
Thank god, you’re awesome. Another camera issue is the low hieght of the camera centre-point (near the chest). I would like that moved higher up the Y-axis. Thanks
Yes please. Especially on Asura, if I try to look up at all the camera clips with the ground and zooms in to the point that my character turns transparent. Put a vertical offset slider just like the horizontal offset one.
Also, FOV. Give an FoV slider, don’t try to auto-set it, people have different tastes.
SLIDER ALL THE THINGS!
Please don’t merely “reduce” the camera smoothing, give us an option to turn it off completely.
Also, a slider to control the FoV, andother to control the maximum camera distance and another to control the camera height (vertical offset) are sorely needed. It’s an insult to the artists, in a game with such great scenery, that we have to spend 90% of the time staring at a small patch of ground around our character.
Also, please fix the ground targeting when mouse buttons are held down. Currently the spells are being cast on the (invisible) position of the mouse cursor. They should be cast at the location the camera is aiming at, when players are in mouse look mode (holding down the RMB). I’ve been reporting that bug since BWE1.

I really do hope an FOV increase is allowed. Currently you can actually tweak your FOV by playing the game in Windowed mode and resizing the height to extreme lows, thus playing in a very thin long rectangle. The FOV is drastically increased and the game world feels much much more larger.

yeah i explained how to do this a few posts up for the people that dont yet understand the implication of FOV (yes some dont know about it : ).
It is like walking around with blinds irl and having to have to turn your head up and down and around constantly to be somewhat aware of your surroundings :/
I would be happy if they would just up it from the 65fov to 85 and be done with it. REAL happy and changing the ratio takes minutes (unless they did not document their code which i seriously doubt). No matter how complex the game is ,changing this ratio cannot be a problem.
If so ,then i need it explained to me
Yah… the rapid-fire zooming in and out makes me nauseous…
I would love to be able to zoom in closer to my character so I can take better pics of my lovely doll face. No I’m not kidding. Another thing is when the camera “jumps” when you zoom in closer. A smoothed zoom I would love.

Make a charr and you can.
We have been asking for you to remove smoothing since BWE1 (probably before BWE1). We don’t want it lessened we want it gone. The non-linear nature of any smoothing/acceleration is awful. The threads dedicated to this issue have been some of the most intelligent and conclusive you will ever find on a gaming board.
Many of those same threads also have asked for an increased FOV option. Humans have around 180 degrees of forward field of view. In a game anything less than 90 begins to feel contricted and zoomed in. Anything above 110 in games starts to look distorted. A slider between default (im guessing it’s 65 or 70) and 110 degrees would be perfect.
Camera collision deserves a serious look as well.
HEY GUYS! can you take a look at my post! I wanna know if the camera smoothing is the problem Ive been having? I tried to explain something about the controls in a thread I posted. I don’t know if we are talking about the same thing though. I feel like there is some kinda delay when Im turning my character. Its like the character turns first and then the rest follows. I hate to bring up Wow but I want to have my controls feel the same way. When you control your character in wow it feels very sharp and responsive. Please let me know if we are talking about the same thing here in my post below.

That’s partly camera smoothing, partly inertia, and partly just plain old input lag due to bad optimization. Check out the link in my signature.
No longer blowing up stuff up on Gandara [CM] :(
Guild Wars 2 has some camera smoothing built into it. It is generally more intrusive than it needs to be, but it also has a bug with it that makes it feel really bad for people with specific mouse look styles, like mine. This bug, and reducing the amount of smoothing is being actively looked at, but must be done carefully and tested carefully as its impact will effect every single player. Thanks for your patience.

p.s. These are not the only camera issues, but are far and away the most egregious so we will address them first.
That is why it seems more logical to give players OPTIONS. I’m absolutely delighted that these issues are being looked at (and even being recognized for a start), and you are right – the implications are far reaching … however, I fail to understand why ArenaNet can’t just implement an option to turn it on or off, or a slider to adjust it.
Surely these things need not be hard-fixed. Wouldn’t you agree? I totally respect the amount of R&D that needs to go into these things (even with options available), however I would suggest giving players the option to turn if on or off as a start, as it’s clearly an issue for quite a few players, along with other issues, such as the camera collision and constricted FoV (which is imho, perhaps even bigger issues tbh).
Thank you for taking the time to create this thread. At least, it’s a comfort knowing that these issues are being considered by the developers.
@Baxuz
Dude thanks so much for sharing your link! What you explained is exactly what I was trying to describe about the camera that I just couldn’t explain right in my post. The videos that are linked on your post when the character is being turned is what I was trying to say. There needs to be a fix for this, or an option or something. I would say this should be on the high priority list of fixes as it can be a total game breaker for many people.
What made you think anyone would want negative acceleration? I am actually curious.
:D
Watch this to fix your FOV problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1XsPYPGcl0&feature=endscreen&NR=1
Seen it ages ago,so how does this fix gw2’s fov again?
I really hope the camera issues are addressed. I’ve played several other MMO’s and none of them have ever made me feel like this. I’ve been trying to play the game despite motion sickness from the camera, avoiding difficult vistas and too much movement within narrow, object-ridden areas, but realistically need to stop because it’s not worth the physical discomfort.
All the other posts above me sum it up, but the way the camera zooms in and out to your character whenever you encounter an object feels like the biggest culprit for me, beyond even the narrow FOV. The floaty, non-sharp turning is awful too.
I’m surprised none of the designers or testers had a negative reaction to the camera.
If there are pvp reasons to keep it the way it is, limit it to when you enter pvp games. That way the the rest of the us pve explorers can enjoy the game.
Please, PLEASE add some options to disable these effects. I really want to continue to play this game.
tbh honest ,the camera comming in closer to your toon because it hits a wall or/w/e is something i have seen in every mmo. Unless you want to look at a black screen all of a sudden because your cam is inside a object this is a good thing.
Is there a specific reason why this game has a camera smoothing?
I have yet to see someone who likes it.

Probably a legacy of console aspirations.
More like a legacy of low dpi mice.
+ Need to zoom out further from character.
+ Need to zoom in CLOSER to character than current defaults allow (hey some of us like to look at our characters or take screenshots without the aid of a nearby wall to fake a real close-up).
+ The whole siezure-inducing jerking camera thing in tight spaces and jumping puzzles.
+ Invisible terrain where camera is. I need the freedom to move my camera around without worrying that tree branches and stuff are in the way. Plenty of other games do this just fine.
+ Option to turn off auto-pan in defeated state.

Use a skill that makes you big! Like the warrior’s rampage or a mushroom in sylvari beginner area that makes you big.
That’s what I do to take screenshots of my armor, because it shows details better :D
I agree and why is there no first person mode available ?
Also one gripe i have is not being able to zoom in or out while i have the right mouse button pressed, why ? :/

No, I think it’s more a remnant of the Guild Wars 1 engine – it had camera smoothing too. The only place where I find that useful, is when I do machinima – it helps smooth the motion of pans, but that’s it. That’s also the reason why I feel these things should be options, rather than fixed yay/nay choices.
For all it’s goodness, I have to say that the overall customization options in Guild Wars 2 is really lacking. Granted, the first priority for them was to release the game and deal with the launch aftermath, but then, the camera and mouse movement are such fundamental things … with respect – it becomes very hard to understand how these issues gets past years of alpha and beta testing, QA, and all the BWE’s.
To me, it’s almost like purchasing the best computer rig, sparing no expense with components, but then buying a cheap $10 keyboard + mouse combo and forgetting that the input devices with which to operate the rig, is just as important as the rig itself.

Add Fov slider and make it so we can zoom out more.

Soz, I just want to jump in and say that we’ve got an excellent thread going on other camera issues over here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Camera-control-issues-a-documented-list/first
Perhaps it would be helpful to keep this thread specifically for the issues surrounding camera smoothing. (I’m guilty myself, since I touched on FoV and collision issues briefly in one of my posts here). It would be great if we promote the thread I’ve linked for the other issues, as it’s getting a nice amount of attention and it sums those other issues up very nicely.
it would be nice to at least have an option to disable the smoothing. i do not like it at all, though i have gotten used to it, i would still rather it just not be there.

Super Ultra Mega Awesome [SUMA]
I run at 1800 DPI usually on my Razer Abyssus 3500, I absolutely love the camera in GW2.. it’s pretty slick. For me anyway.
Seen it ages ago,so how does this fix gw2’s fov again?
GW2’s fov is designed to be low. You only get sickness if you sit to close to your screen. Sit further away, problem solved.
Ah, so if this is kind of “inbuilt” into the GW engine, and the GW2 engine is build on the GW engine, maybe it’s part of the optimization of the game?
Maybe something like making peoples’ panning and turning more predictable so that it’s easier for the engine to render and send data over the internet, something like that?
In which case will we never be rid of camera smoothing in GW2? Or perhaps it’s just something they’ll work on gradually (like training wheels on a bike, eventualy they can get rid of it)?
@ Jon Peters or any of the devs
Is this something that you guys are currently working on or it is a future plan at the moment? Just wanted to let you guys know that your game is great and I can’t speak for anybody else but I read other posts about all the other issues about the game but personally I’m not bothered by any of it because I know you’ll fix those other issues. The camera smoothing is the only thing that bothers me and I hope that an option could be available soon to disable it or minimize it in some way. Do you think that you can keep us updated on whats going on and let us know what your plans are such as if you will add an option to disable it or a slider? Or maybe let us test it out like a beta or something?

Designs that makes a person uncomfortable is cool in art but not in a AAA mass product.
What people don’t realize is that an increased FoV will improve the experience for everyone, not just the ones who get motion sickness. And yeah, my 27" monitor is at the edge of my table, it’s maybe a solution for people with motion sickness but it doesn’t change that I don’t get a proper view of Orr or any massive building.
Ever watched the trailer and saw the brief glimpse of Orr with all it’s beauty? Ingame you can’t even see a quarter of that which is just a kitten shame.
