I know this is something a lot of people want, and others really think is a bad idea. ESO had a great launch on consoles, and the game is great all things considering. Perfect? No, but it is a month old.

I’d love to see GW2-3 on consoles and I know you guys have dabbled into it before on the PS3/XB360.

Look at Tera for instance. Has a way of mapping up to 16 keys on a pad and the game seem to run equally good on it. As they have implementation for controller even on PC. It would be equal for everyone playing with a controller. Meaning it would work in the grand scheme of things as everybody would be at an equal disadvantage compared to using a kb/mouse.

Is this something you guys would be revisiting now with the better equipped console specs and tech?

Don’t compare it to Tera.
New Classes there can roll on Pad, but old ones will not.

To make Gw2 roll on Consoles, we would need a Crosshair and Crosshair mouse lock/unlock just like in The Secret World.

Then, GW2 would work with pads.

But one thing stands for sure.

MMOs on Consoles don’t perform well in matter of controling character.

I did some light reading and here’s what I can summarise:

-They were working on a console release before the PC version released
-They knew that a console release date would be quite some time after the initial PC release
-They have since found out that a console release would be more pricey than anticipated: in one article it mentioned how updates/patches are more expensive on the consoles, so it would be likely that the quality of the console version would deteriorate or updates would be slow
-It’s now very unlikely to happen- we haven’t had much positive news on it for a while. With the way A-net is heading now (PC Expacs), expect more of their attention directed there than on consoles.

Make sure to look at the time stamps on the articles!

PS: I could be wrong here, but I seem to remember seeing a red post not too long ago answering a similar thread, explaining that a console release is not in the works. Players were also commenting how technically difficult GW2 would be to adapt to consoles.

I agree wholeheartedly that GW2 might not be the game to bring to consoles due to the fact of how it is built. What I am asking about here is the future of GW. GW3 for instance. I forgot to mention this in my initial post.

Ok so I see you guys have a lot of mixed feelings about this. It is very understandable, but please me explain something. Many gamers don’t have the economy or aren’t in a position to buy a gaming pc. Consoles are cheaper and last for a long time without hw getting as quickly dates as a pc. Making it a valid option for a bigger array for gamers. Also, by catering the actions of the game to consoles there won’t be a gap between players when it comes to reactivity and lack there of. Obviously the PC version wouldn’t look the same as the console version, and it would definitely have to be a stripped down one, unless it gets tweaked like ESO did. Having less skills which force you to really spend time combining skills and making the build synergise.

When it comes to controls I’d say you guys are wrong. I play a rogue on ESO PS4 and I have steel control over that character. It feels buttery smooth and I’m surprised how much fun it is. Also the quality of the performance is impeccable. It lags more on pc in Cyrodiil 200v200 than on consoles. Obviously, the difference is you have less skills on the bar, and need to swap between stances to use more than one set of skills. And to be fair, using an aiming system seem to work best, but I believe a lock on could work too. It would require some quality logic coded into it to make it snap to a target and lock on. Having some sort of switch mechanic which would be triggered without much hassle. Hard? Yes. Impossible? Probably not.

I just want people to understand that these games can be enjoyed on a console. The experience is different and more laid back, but by all means not impossible!

In fairness, the immersive combat mode mod adds all that quite easily, and I for one wouldn’t want to go back to playing this game without it. If one guy can hack it together with a 3rd party tool, I doubt it would take much effort at all for Anet to add the features to the core game. Crosshair and Crosshair mouse lock are so very easily doable that they’ve already been done.

Just an FYI. I don’t really have an opinion one way or the other as far as the console thing goes, I haven’t owned one since the Sega Genesis and don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I always wondered. There were murmurs of it happening around release time and the simplistic mechanics when compared to GW1 would make it seem viable but I highly doubt it ever would.

If it did I’d assume it would be on completely different servers. Mixing PC users with console users in this genre would be a disaster imho.

I just hope that, if ANet ever decides to release a GuildWars game on console, the PC version doesn’t suffer from it. Neither grafikal, nor gameplay quality should compromise just because the platform doesn’t support it. Just get better hardware for your console and a few extra buttons for your controller.

With great pain I remember Skyrim’s release: low quality textures, maximum 4GB ram and an increadibly clunky UI. Rumors say that even the release-date was late because of the console-version. Most issues were quickly fixed by the modding community. In order to make sure this desaster doesn’t happen to the GuildWars franchise I’d rather not have a console version at all. Especially when I read about lock on target, aiming assistance and other plaques I sincerely hope that they won’t ever find their way into a game that I enjoy.

It will never happen. ANet have said it would cost too much per patch, plus MS and Sony QA the patches to make sure they do what they are supposed to and don’t do anything they shouldn’t. So that will delay any patch by an unknown amount of time. This would mean that a console version would have to have it’s own servers. This will mean ANet would have to pay out for more servers. Also game size is a big factor in a console. The game is 35GB already. And it will only get bigger as time go’s on.

I’m trying to make sense of this, but I fail. Sorry. Guild Wars 2 can work wonderful on consoles. First of all, have you played Final Fantasy XIV on a console? Or on PC with a gamepad? It works really well, and it’s a LOT more complicaterd than GW2 ever will be.

Controlling our character in GW2 with a gamepad should be easy enough. Jumping is important, so we can use B for that (on an XBone gamepad). Then we simply map the first three weapon skills on the other three buttons, and the fourth and fifth on the shoulder buttons. All could easily be swapped out temporarily with utility skills by holding down the left trigger, or profession skills (mesmer shatter etc) with the right trigger. Easy peasy. It gives us access to evertything, and we still have the D-pad unusued, as well as Start and Select. If FFXIV can do it, GW2 most certainly can too.

I prefer PC games.

The question is if GW2 will also come to consoles, not if it will move there. The PC version is perfectly safe, don’t worry.

@BattleCat
You forgot to map dodging (which is probably the most important button), F1-F4 and with upcoming specialisations even F5, Weapon swap, call target, target called target, switch target, draw/stow weapon (important if you want to cancel skills or stop attacking), look behind (useful in WvW and PvP) and probably some others.

The upcoming F5 skill is a good example: If GW2 had console-support ANet might have come to the conclusion that another key can’t be efficiently mapped to their default controller layout. This would have prevented F5 skills from being implemented and the chronomancer wouldn’t work the same way it will due to the lack of controller support.

Who knows, maybe we’ll get F6 – F8 skills with upcoming elite specialisations. Maybe we’ll get some new functionality for other keys. ANet is free to develop so many things simply because there is no controller support.

It being more cost effective for the consumer is fallacy thats been proven wrong countless times. Consoles have significant hidden upkeep and expansion costs most supporters like to avoid mentioning. Especially when it comes to the double-dipped subscriptions, often purposely confusing store sub-currencies, hardware replacements, and closed off networks.

Only a few MMOs do cross platform, and they are not only more expensive to run, the interfaces tend to be severely stripped down, or uses KBM anyway. FF is probably the only game that managed to pull it off successfully (designwise as well as financially), but Blizzard won’t even touch it. That kind of says a lot about the situation.

L Stick – Move
L3 – Weapon Swap
R Stick – Look
R3 – Dodge
Up – F1
Right – F2
Down – F3
Left – F4
A – 1
B – 2
C – 3
D – 4
R1 – 5
L2 + A – 6
L2 + B – 7
L2 + C – 8
L2 + D – 9
L2 + R1 – 10
R2 – Jump
L1 – Target Nearest
Start – Menu1
Select – Menu2

L2 could act as a modifier for “shift state” on more keys, if you want weapon stow, call target, about face, F5, with a few more keys left.

If you want to get really crazy with shift states make both triggers (l2 and r2) modifiers I guess.

It “can” work, not as efficiently as the PC, but it can work.

The remaining issues are, is there a want/need for it on consoles, and the cost of maintenance/development. Right now the cost benefit is against making it on the console, not necessarily the feasibility.

I highly doubt it will ever see console release, because the game was not developed with console compatibility in mind so the development workload for console compatibility would be immense – likely involving a complete recode of the entire game.

I don’t think it would be cost effective

For some its easier than a keyboard, people who think a controller cant work just never have had it work or dislike controllers and consoles. I’ve seen controller’s used in tons of games where people said it wouldnt work or would make u less effective, and those game had way more keys needed to be bound to play.

In gw2 you only need like 16-20 keys bound which is nothing.

But GW2 won’t be on consoles, all we can hope is gw3 will be eventually, since mmos are making it work to a broader audience now.

Yeah controllers can work. Actually I use both a controller and a mouse at the same time. For me it works great and it’s more natural to use the controller for things like movement, jump, dodge and auto run. Then using naga for everything else. But in regards to OP no we won’t see GW2 in a console

XBone and PS4 are technically weak PCs that require a game engine to be coded to take advantage of the 8 weak cores. And by weak I mean each core has roughly 2/3rds the performance of the cores found in the original Core 2 Q6600 or 1/3rd the performance found in the i5-2500K.

Currently the GW2 game engine can keep two cores busy but beyond that not so much. And we know how the game’s performance is limited by the maximum performance of a single core.

So it’s not going to happen. They would either have to roll an engine for both consoles that can take advantage of all those cores or port the game to an already existing engine and either case port all the assets as well. And I’m not even talking about the logistics dealing with either console’s network.

Probably because they don’t want to move their butts off the couch to their PCs.

More likely wanting a single “gaming box” that doesn’t require the level of maintenance that a PC should be getting, it just “works”. No patch Tuesdays for the OS, no video driver updates that break the game or perform worse. There are on consoles too but they don’t bash you over the head, usually.
