Can we get a statement on the 'field of view' issue?
I agree, there’s been tons of player interest in this for months. I’d like to know if we’re always going to be stuck with the horrifically low FoV or what.
I think it’s fine. It’s fair for everyone.
There are a lot of other things I’d rather see them working on before considering this.
ANet has been ignoring this issue for a very long time which is kind of strange considering how “in touch” they pretend to be with the community.

How is something that makes some people ill while playing fair for everyone?
It doesn’t seem that bad for me in 16:9. Of course, now I’ll probably notice it next time I log in and never be able to stop noticing it >.<

I think if you got a chance to play it at 90ish fov, you’d never want to go back

Quite possibly. Like I said, I’m probably going to notice it now and have it bother me constantly from now on… thanks interwebs! XD
It’s funny, FoV has been a primary reason I haven’t played many other games (Skyrim/FO for example), but I have no real issues with it here. Also, I do believe they said, way back in beta, that the limited FoV is intentional, and that they wanted it to remain limited for PvP reasons.
Phaedryn, any chance you have a quote from that response? Also it’s weird as you can circumvent this with a 3 monitor setup that has a FoV of around ~140 or, if you are really desperate and want to have a minor advantage, use the windowed mode trick where you can get ridiculous high FoV values.
Would be nice if Anet supported this. Its not exactly a new concept.
I’m mostly bothered by the fact that there are all sorts of gigantic beautiful things to look at in the world, and I can’t get a good view of half of them because I’m peering through a telescope all the time. I understand wanting to enforce a max field of view for PvP and performance reasons, but c’mon at least give us up to 90 degrees! The game already changes the FoV to at least that high during some events (there’s video evidence of this occurring during the Shadow Behemoth fight on Youtube).
C’mon, Anet. Pleeeeeeeease?
Makes me wonder why they don’t ban people with two or three monitors then. They have an unfair advantage! ;p
Anyway, I’m not concerned with seeing more to the sides, I’m not interested in having more zoom, I just want to be able to perceive distances accurately. Which means we need to be able to adjust vertical FOV. The low FOV makes it so the distance between objects shown in the screen is not the actual distance. You can verify this by guessing how far you are from an object in front of you, then turning the camera sideways. You’ll see your guess was way off.
This makes it difficult to use ranged skills correctly unless you keep looking at the red bar under the skills.

I just don’t want to play when I’m 5 feet away from an object (a wall?) yet it seems like the wall is right in front of my nose. Claustrophobic.
I too would like to see some movement on this issue. The FOV is too low. Ideally it would be adjustable to suit the individual player’s preference. This is a game which is designed to be appreciated for its beauty, and yet people are deliberately playing in windowed mode and shrinking the Y dimension just to get a wider FOV, sacrificing large swathes of monitor space.
Unaffected by this personally, but giving customers vertigo can not be good for ANet’s bottom line and by extension the population of the game. Support bump.
I think FOV is the number one issue facing the game.
It’s subtle but powerful and makes me feel claustophic playing. I’ve never really been able to marvel at the scenery as I’m usually just lookin at the few feet of dirt in front of me. People are not going to keep playing a game which makes them feel vaguely uncomfortable or even nauseous.
If Arenanet thinks this is a good tradeoff for pvp reasons, jump puzzles or whatever, fair enough, but I’d at least like a statement.
I just want to add that I completely agree. The only way we will get a response is if the number of people who demand it rise. If this is an issue for you and you have not yet added your voice to this movement, please do so, you count.
I check the forums everyday just to see if there is any new news on the camera smoothing and fov. Please give us some info on whats going on with this

No, it’s not, and having a slider would make it MORE fair. Right now people with triple monitor setups do not have to deal with low FOV like the rest of us.
It’s not okay, it’s not “fair” by any stretch of the imagination for ONLY people with $1000 monitor setup to be able to play the game with an acceptable FOV.
Phaedryn, any chance you have a quote from that response?
Sorry no. It’s just something I remembered from a discussion during beta.
EDIT: I would add, the default distance was much closer early in beta and there was no ability to scroll out originally. What we have now is actually a compromise.
Here are two links from beta discussing the issue:

Even if its not an issue for you specifically, hold arenanet accountable. This is a huge issue for a lot of people and the lack of even a response shows a lack of commitment to the playerbase.
If this issue’s actually making players with vertigo ill, then it should definitely be addressed. In the meantime, what aspect ratio do you guys have on your monitors? The game looks fine to me on a 17" 16:9, but I definitely see what you mean when I switch to 1600×1200. If you’re using an older 4:3 monitor you could try forcing it to run in 16:9 or 16:10 for some improvement, though you’ll get the black “widescreen” bars on it.
If that doesn’t help, you could try turning off post-processing. Different issue, but things like motion blur can cause nausea, so it could be contributing as well. I’ve never suffered from vertigo, but excessive motion blur does give me motion sickness and migraines, so I always turn it off. It is, in fact, the only thing I’ve found that gives me motion sickness, which is good considering I work on ships XD
My monitor is 16:10. I don’t get vertigo per se, but I do get dizzy from a low fov, mostly just because of the tunnel vision. You’re basically looking through a telescope and swinging it around wildly.
Patiently waiting on FOV slider, increased zoom distance, and the camera collision to be fixed. The game isn’t that fun when you get a headache from it.
FOV options are needed… It’s a PC!
Another day, another FoV thread. I think I’ll keep this thread updated.
My wife and I have the game…. my wife gets sick after 20 mins in the game and has to stop playing….. we have many friends from GW and want to play the game with them… the FOV issues causing nausea diminish our playing ability and have in effect cost us £130 for games we can’t play or play very little…. its disappointing.
We both worked our ****** off to get 50/50 in GW to be prepped for GW2 and waited years for this to now have a game we are reluctant to play
A game that causes MANY players to become ill from its playing should have some priority to assist those players overcome the issues…. it’s a known issue and seems there are some simple things Anet could do to allieviate this for the player base and some kind of proposition from them would be nice to see.

(User was infracted for this post.)
This guy was infracted for it? really? :/
Yeah, because I made a company call-out. But it’s all good, he edited it very nice and left the thread open.
Please give us a slider/console command to adjust fov. I have a 30" monitor and I hate it when I cannot enjoy the real estate. I feel blind at 2560×1600.
Oh, and from here on every post I see asking for this to be fixed or complaining about motion sickness, I kill an innocent bunny in game. So please fix it or have the blood of the innocent on your hands.

Anet PLEASE address this. I have vision probs as it is – not seeing wth I am doing half the time makes things MUCH worse.
Plus, you do a dis-service to the beautiful scenery your artists have created by making sure most of us never see them.
Surely there must be a reason for this, I’d just like to know what it is.
My support to this, too.
I’m one of the lucky ones. I don’t get sick due to this, but I do feel uncomfortable if I play for more than an hour or so (which I generally do), and sometimes get headaches.
Anet, are the problems with field of view (lack of scrolling out all the way and what you parts of the screen you can see at any one time) being worked on at all?
I am a disabled gamer (blind in one eye) and so the FOV problem reaaaly affects me. I’m blind enough as it is without having my “view” artificially blocked/hampered in-game.
Will this be fixed? If not, why not? I’m not trying to be annoying, I’m just wondering what the rationale for this “feature” is.
Thank you
Please get back to us on this, it seems silly given that you can get a wider FoV if you have multiple monitors, or if you set the game to windowed mode, and shrink the window vertically a little.
I find it pretty ridiculous that they don’t respond to this.
There have been a tremendous amount of posts across several different sites and they stay mute through it all.
If it’s in the works, just say so. If you’re not going to do the right thing let us know that too.
Ignoring us only makes you look bad.

This, it makes no sense at all.. it can’t be for PvP reasons either since I get an insane FoV if running in 5760×1080..
ANet will ignore this post as all the others about FoV.
I can see no logical reason for not adding FOV adjustment. The issues of nausea / motion sickness / headaches / dizzyness (it varies from person to person) etc are REAL and they need to be taken seriously. It has been proven that allowing the FOV to be widened to around 90 or 100 is sufficient in many cases to alleviate the problem to a point where the game becomes playable instead of inducing long-lasting sickness (the problem often doesn’t stop the moment you close the game).
To hide behind the PvP argument is lame, lazy and evasive. Widening your FOV (within sensible limits ) does not give a significant advantage and besides anyone with multi monitors can achieve this anyway. If its really a genuine concern then just cap the adjustment at FOV 100, this is far from an extreme FOV but should be plenty enough to help alleviate the sickness problems for most sufferers.
Ask and ye shall recieve: Camera and FOV!
:)
HI everyone,
As has been pointed in the previous post, Jon Peters has made an official statement about FoV issues. Therefore, this thread is being closed to help keep the forums organised. You can find the thread here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Camera-and-FOV-field-of-view/first#post343813
Thanks for your understanding
