Greetings Tyrians!

With the next release we will be making some changes to ascended vending in PvP and Fractals. Over the past year we introduced ways to obtain ascended gear via participation in either game mode thus allowing players to acquire gear by playing the game mode they chose. We implemented these vendors in a way that made sense for their perspective player base at the time. With the next release we are making two significant changes to these vendors to create one system that functions the same regardless of game mode.

First, each game mode will still use a specific currency unique to that mode as part of the price but the rest of the costs associated with purchasing the gear will be the same across the game modes. Having a unified system for acquiring ascended gear via vendors will give us more flexibility for adjustments, if they are needed, and it will give us the flexibility to potentially introduce this system in other game modes where appropriate.

Second, purchasing the ascended gear will now rely much more on player crafting. The cost for a piece of gear will now include a crafted token which shows a player’s mastery of the appropriate crafting discipline, the game mode specific currency, and raw gold. Ascended crafting is vital to sustaining a healthy economy and it is important that we keep that in place even when a player acquires ascended items via a vendor. For PvP, this will add a considerable cost to the acquisition of ascended gear. Please note that you will be able to buy gear with current prices until the update is live.

Ascended vending is not intended to be the optimal path for acquiring ascended gear, but rather a way for players to acquire the gear through time spent playing their preferred game mode. And while ascended vending now requires max level crafting, players that obtain ascended gear via vending will see a moderate discount in cost over traditional crafting.

This is my opinion on the topic:

The PvP Ascended Tokens from this past season were thrilling to me. A great shiny reward to a very low reward area in the game. I’d have played far more PvP if it had good rewards. But mostly the Ascended Tokens were wonderful, not because they were ridiculously cheap, which admittedly they were, but because it was an opportunity to acquire Ascended items without grinding my crafting up to 500 and then having to daily remember to slog through crafting enough material to make something.

Perhaps ascended gear is not an appropriate reward for people who are as casual as me. I have only put 4,067 hours into this game and ascended armor seems to be something for more serious people.

But regardless, you got my hopes up. You dashed them. I am disappointed. Heck I would still use the system if you added a 15 – 30 gold price per item onto the cost of the ascended gear bought with the shards. But with a new crafting token, what is the point? The point was to force me to spend the time crafting. I don’t want to, therefore I can either comply and hate the way I am forced to play the game, or I refuse and just don’t get the shiny new gear. I will refuse, I have played too much Guild Wars 2 to let you guys bully me into hating the game. Instead, I will just be disappointed and go back to ignoring rewardless PvP.

But I think this is a poor decision. Maybe I am alone. Maybe the crafting time gates are pervasively loved. Maybe not. Whatever. My input is after the fact anyways.

I think it makes sense.

Random ascended armor/weapon box drops were kind of invading the crafting of ascended gear already. This last spvp season 5 was ridiculous. 6 pieces of ascended gear in under 100 games.

For the first time in a long time I have an ascended armor box just sitting in bank because I don’t know what character to make next and give it ascended gear. I have 5 characters full ascended right now, 3 of them even full aquatic with the last 2 in the works for the weapons (breathers were easy with bitterfrost).

For people who main the same 1 character only, ascended crafting is completely pointless. Ascended gear is becoming too easy to aquire just like exotics were when the game launched.

They haven’t mentioned it, so if it’s coming, it won’t be anytime soon. Notice, however, that they haven’t mentioned Raids either.

Anyway, before they implement it, they’d better fix the leather problem first.

Ascended gear is becoming too easy to aquire just like exotics were when the game launched.

Well, if Anet’ll want for new people to get into raiding, while at the same time keeping to use sledgehammers as a skill balance tool, that gear should really stay that way.

Hey A.net, why don’t you try to make Crafting actually fun and interesting so people want to do it rather than a time-gated annoyance minefield that people will try to avoid at all costs thus reducing the need to try and force people to level it up in the first place?

I feel to balance out the modes, they should just increase the actual gold amount of the pvp one. They don’t have to go crazy and raise it 60g or anything though, afterall you have to wait months for the season to start, just to get 5 pieces.

The fractal one, gold cost should be lowered to make it more appealing for that kind of grind for it. It’s the only reason i won’t buy it, since it costs more then crafting it normally.

To be honest, this “change” they wanna do, just sounds more like a way to force players to do raids and get the ascended there, which i for one have 0 interest in

Personally i think id just do more fractals and get to T4 and get my ascended gear from the drops, then put up with this change. Specially since ascended gear is only marginally better then exotic lol. Just seems like a huge waste of their time to change the current system.

Before spvp season 5 the easiest way to get ascended weapons and armor was WvW. All you have to do is play the mode and occasionally an ascended weapon or armor box will drop. It allows you to pick the weapon/armor piece with core stat of choice. Zero crafting involved. If you want to use HoT stats you can buy the crafting recipe and runes and sigils you just buy them from the provisioner. It really cannot get more carebear then that.

crazy maybe, but just remove all methods of acquiring ascended armor/weapons except crafting, then make them tradable on trading post?

the crafters would have an expanded market,
the non-crafters would have a place to buy them straight up.

Of course anyone who doesn’t like crafting would hate this because deep down they know the cheapest acquire methods ingame are the free methods like spvp season 5 and random drops from wvw.

this changes is pretty much needed, if anet let how people purchase ascended gear on pvp any longer, ascended is pretty much become the “new exotic”, is not for exclusivity purpose but for the equality that non-pvp players do spend way more money and time to make their ascended gears while in pvp, with minimal effort people can acquire ascended gears and 100++ transmutation charges.

Y’know, this raises a question. Will the ascended armor boxes still work after this change? I also have one waiting the right alt, not because I have full ascended on everyone (far from it) but because I haven’t figured out which alt gets it. I still need to make/acquire 6 heavy pieces to complete that achieve. Thing is I don’t use my heavies for PvE, I have a Reaper for that.

So do I need to hurry up and give a random guardian/warrior/rev an ascended chest piece, or can I wait on that decision a while longer?

I never thought I’d see a worse implementation of BIS gear than WoW’s gear treadmill, but ANet proved me wrong. I have to admit, though, that I’m conflicted. Since the economy is driven by the sale of crafting materials, Ascended crafting was very lucrative for me because I sold everything. On the other hand, crafting is the second least fun thing to do in the game.

I liked the fact that the original Guild Wars allowed me to readily get max stat gear and that the endgame pursuit was for elite skins. It was disappointing (to me) that ANet chose stats and not skins to fuel crafting in GW2.

It’s not bad or anything, I crafted an ascended trident the other day for my reaper and I don’t really plan to use her underwater ever. But it’s best to be prepared ;-)

I am also disappointed in this announcement. I have been playing Guild Wars 2 for about 3 months now. I love the PVP and the combat mechanics. The weakest part of the experience for me has been the crafting. I found it to be hard to understand at first. There’s a lot of bloat and tons of refining materials that barely get used. You have to refine materials, in order to refine them again, in order to craft intermediary components, before making an item. It’s very boring and tedious. The Discovery tab may be easy to use once you figure it out, but I read a guide on it and still couldn’t get it until I played with it for a few hours, I just don’t find it intuitive at all. Not to mention that it penalizes players for having and using crafting recipes. My first impression was, “This is not for me!”

I have since revisited it and managed to bear through the monotony to Weaponsmithing 500. I found it to be such a chore that I do not want to repeat again any time soon. Hearing that crafting will be made much more necessary if you want to even experience the raid content is disheartening.

The other major weak spot in my interest in Guild Wars 2 is the economy. Crafting is a big part of that because in most MMOs, crafting is a way to secure more monetary income, rather than an expensive barrier to getting into advanced content. I do not think it is currently possible to make money in Guild Wars 2 using crafting. Even worse, crafting materials are the number 1 faucet in the game, meaning that you must not only pay for crafting materials you don’t have, but also lose your income in the process.

Please make and keep crafting entirely 100% optional for progression. Anything else will drive away customers.

I agree, rebalancing the costs would probably have been a better idea. Not sure why it has to be bound to crafting. In that case, you can simply … well, just craft it.

If Ascended armor/weapons dropped half as much as you think it does in WvW, there would be more playing in WvW and more attention given to it.
In 300 WvW ranks, I’ve gotten 1 armor box and maybe 4 rings.

Anet always stated they wanted crafting to be the main source for ascended armor/weapons. This is just rooting it back to that. I’m happy knowing that I’ll get a ‘discount’ on vendor prices over crafting, however raid prices need to be in-line with Fractals, PvP and hopefully WvW (when it finally gets implemented!) vendor prices.

One of the good reasons to enjoy being a PvX player.

Well, if Anet’ll want for new people to get into raiding, while at the same time keeping to use sledgehammers as a skill balance tool, that gear should really stay that way.

After looking a bit deeper into the leather market during the last week and the changes they made with the new farm, I am not sure that Anet sees any tier of leather as a problem. I would even reckon that its intended.

When asc armorcrafting got introduced, t2-5 cloth was the bottleneck because damask was used in all 3 armor weights, while gossamer got dirt cheap because it was needed in ascended crafting.

With HoT and the introduction of patches, which are needed for t1-7 armor for all armor weights, the bottleneck shifted to leather.

I think with that, they intended to addres one the first problems they encountered with gear in GW2:

Cheap Exotic Gear.

It was not feasible to make vanilla exotic gear really expensive a year after launch so they introduced ascended.

By introducing gossamer patches as requirement for exotic (and ascended) armor, crafting prices of exotic gear more than doubled. This didnt have too much of an effect on exotic gear with vanilla stats because those have too many different faucets already (crafting, forging, loot drops, karma, dungeon tokens etc.) and most of them were freely tradeable.

The new exotic gear with HoT stats however, doesnt have most of those faucets and you are basically left with having to craft them as they are account bound on acquire.

So I think the changes made to leather were done primarily in order to raise the price of exotics.

Just chiming in to tell that I’m a tad under 700 ranks and I have never had a ascended weapon/armor box drop in wvw, not as loot, nor as rank reward.

Lets just say that you may want to reconsider what you actually want to say. Because ascended is basically ONLY needed in fractals where agony starts to hit (aka for AR infusions). Anything else is nothing more then skill cap. Sure, it does have higher stats and there for makes the content easier. But not a requirement.

Great new currency. Like we needed it.
PvP ascended are cheap as kitten, but if they want to change them they should just slap a gold price on each armor part and be done with it – let’s say about 10 gold average. That could work. This way they will lose a lot of players who just played PvP for ascended armors and that may be a good thing because there are less players playing PvP just for armors, but that also means there are less players playing PvP in general. And PvP is probably the only game mode which needs increased population, sure most new player will suck when they start, but with enough games played majority could improve.
On the other hand, ascended armor is only really needed in fractals and I guess raids (maybe WvW).

Lets just say that you may want to reconsider what you actually want to say. Because ascended is basically ONLY needed in fractals where agony starts to hit (aka for AR infusions). Anything else is nothing more then skill cap. Sure, it does have higher stats and there for makes the content easier. But not a requirement.

True however….

Ascended can be used by more than one char. You have 6 chars and 3 of them are use light armour? No problem, make just ONE armour set and all three can now use as needed. What’s that you might want to mix up your game and try dif stats? NP, no need to make multiple armour sets for EACH and EVERY char. Simply just make 2 more sets and they can ALL use them.

So we see there are more uses for Ascended than the AR.

Would you rather make for example:

A Zerk Light armour set
A Condi Light armour set and
A Tanky/Toughness/Survival set (because hey you just never know)

That is 3 sets total or…….

3 sets for EACH of your light armour chars?

I know which I would go with. Then of course you can apply that to the medium and heavy armour classes as well. Also Exotics are not exactly cheap atm on the TP, well not zerk at least anyway.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Before spvp season 5 the easiest way to get ascended weapons and armor was WvW. All you have to do is play the mode and occasionally an ascended weapon or armor box will drop. It allows you to pick the weapon/armor piece with core stat of choice. Zero crafting involved.

Yeah easy except for the RNG. I play WvW almost every day. I have not had an ascended armor or weapon drop from WvW for 7-8 months. Soooo easy.

Not that I’m affected,but needing to grind the crafting in order to obtain BiS items is not necessary imo. Tying it all to one grind is just not something that is very GW2 like.

Keeping options open and keeping them apart will be more favourable than to gate them all behind crafting. There’s already a heavy dependence on crafting in lots of areas, and there’s no need to make it even more mandatory.

For the first time in a long time I have an ascended armor box just sitting in bank because I don’t know what character to make next and give it ascended gear.

Y’know, this raises a question. Will the ascended armor boxes still work after this change? I also have one waiting the right alt, not because I have full ascended on everyone (far from it) but because I haven’t figured out which alt gets it. I still need to make/acquire 6 heavy pieces to complete that achieve. Thing is I don’t use my heavies for PvE, I have a Reaper for that.

So do I need to hurry up and give a random guardian/warrior/rev an ascended chest piece, or can I wait on that decision a while longer?

Holy cat. I hadn’t thought of that – I took the announcement as a sign to hurry up and spend my ascended shards while I could, but if the boxes are going to be disabled it’d be really nice to know before the patch hits. I have a few sitting around because I don’t want to waste an ascended box on the wrong piece…

I mean they state this:

Please note that you will be able to buy gear with current prices until the update is live.

They should’ve said something if they will be affected.

Ascended can be used by more than one char. You have 6 chars and 3 of them are use light armour? No problem, make just ONE armour set and all three can now use as needed. What’s that you might want to mix up your game and try dif stats? NP, no need to make multiple armour sets for EACH and EVERY char. Simply just make 2 more sets and they can ALL use them.

I have ascended sets myself and i do swap them out now and then, the problem with this however relies in the fact that it is not optimal. for example i would use Aristocracy runes on a condi ps war. For burn guardian i would use Balthazar runes. Same for others: Perplexity for mesmer, thorn for necro etc etc. So despite armor/weapons/trinkets being more adoptive. You’re still most likely to be swapping sigils and runes all the time when you swap your gear from one class to another. Instead i prefer to make additional sets. and just keep those on my characters. Might be an investment at start. But it will safe me some mats/gold overtime.

Well this change sounds both ominous and terrible. I think we can expect the price of ectos and T6 mats to go up when this change drops.

That and that a lot of people are going to have a lot of “useless” ascended currency.

Terrible, who thought this up? You know, I tried my first pvp this last season and had a lot of fun ranking up to silver league. I had planned on continued ranking over the next season. Now I dont know if Ill even bother. I hate playing a game who has these kinds of people at the helm. If I weren’t playing pve with my grade school age daughter Id be gone from gw2 as of today.

I crafted all three classes of ascended armor. The time and materials required were more than I can begin to describe.

Arena net will still offer ascended equipment at a discount to the pure crafting path.

There was some verbiage about expansion into other modes in the future. Likely an off suggestion that “its possible but I’m not going to get raked over the coals by the community if it doesn’t happen”.

If WvW isn’t included there will be a huge outcry from that community given the neglect over other rewards. Given that they are revamping the system it would be a huge mistake to not include all modes in the revamp, take a little more time to do it if thats requried.

Then you’re without a doubt the luckiest person I know, I’ve gotten 1 box from WvW so far (rank 600 only, zerging is boring). Either way RNG is terrible

lol I don’t even have a full set of ascended armor on any character I have and ive been playing since the start. The price of making the armor is a complete joke and they refuse to fix the cost to make them .. now force to craft it ONCE again which is insanely pricey to any person to do without just completely over investing your gold in it. I don’t get why they want to make everything harder and force people to play Trading Post.. its obscured. Could of just easily made stuff at vendor require more of the actual activity instead of forcing people to do something which is a huge boring mess and just more money money money.
Oh and how about taking a look at your leather situation lmao NO LEATHER YET LETS DO FORCED CRAFTING NOW FOR ARMOR for each armor class. Feels like im in the twilight zone. This update better come with fixes to actually obtaining crafting items to actually do this leveling im not paying so much gold just to reach 500 at these current prices.

Edit: slash that … it will never happen as the promise to help lower prices of t6 leather has done nothing. lol not paying 90s for each t6 piece of leather.. im not that stupid.(not buying those until they reach below 30s)

Another big “kitten you” for the people who were enjoying playing the game and getting rewards, having fun is forbidden you must do mind numbing grinds to get anything, spend tons of time in convoluted menus crafting stuff and take months because of all time gates. Way to go devs! Keep up the good job! The Trading Post is the top priority!
