So contrary to what they initially claimed (that Ascended was planned all along), Colin specifically states in that interview that Exotic WAS supposed to be final tier and Ascended was added because they underestimated how quickly people would get Exotic.

Ignoring the fact that people like being able to get max stat gear quickly so they then only have to worry about aesthetics, here we have proven that ArenaNet did outright LIE back in November, and that Ascended WASN’T planned prior to release.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.

Depends on what you mean by ascended gear was planned. My understanding was that ascended gear was talked about, but didn’t make it into the game. It certainly wasn’t planned in it’s current form…but it was discussed.

Why wasn’t it planned in its current form? Because Anet didn’t count on the content locusts. The adapted to a changing situation.

Whether or not it was “planned” depends on how you define planned.

In one guys mind they talked about it and so it was planned, Colin didn’t take it that far.

Not a lie…but it sure shows a lack of communication between departments.

It definately wasnt planned, you can see that it was conjured up very fast and shoved in the game by mere craptastic implementation.

No matter what he says people will complain. He was right, people got exotics way to quickly and even though people want to get max gear quickly, In MMO’s getting them that quick will do more damage to the game then ascended gear ever will.

It was proven back in November. It’s been restated time and time again, and pretty much anytime we’ve spoken out we’ve been attacked by the Anetbots about our credibility while they make strawman arguments.

Everyone knows the reason people play mmos is for projects, typically gear or cosmetics, when they knew they weren’t going to add cosmetics that we could get in game without spending a dime they decided to add gear. They knew that people would have a serious problem with them going back on their word and yet they ignored us.

I like you bought this game because it was supposed to be different. It wasn’t supposed to be like the rest, and I was highly disappointed only 2 months after release to see that instead of actually following thru they simply gave in to the people who aren’t even hear anymore. Most likely those who wanted the gear treadmill, the focus on dungeons, and the harder harder harder crowd aren’t even playing this game anymore, most of them that Anet listened to are gone, just as we predicted they would be. Meanwhile they continued down the path that scared off most of the serious long term players that would have stayed had they done what they promised in the first place. 75% of the original playerbase is gone, you can tell when you login anywhere in the game despite false claims to the contrary and all because of three things. Gear treadmill, class PVE imbalance, and the worst economy in any mmo in a long long time.

We’ll see what happens next. It’s like a reality TV show at this point.

Just look at his response to more gear down the road “I really hope not” “Guild Wars isn’t about being out there on this endless gear grind” wow, just wow. I noticed that Cantha wasn’t answered. hmmm “When you see those types of features in GW2 [Guild Halls] it’s not what’s been traditionally done” You mean like gear treadmills, or DR, or the wallet, or stats on gear?

mind boggled Did Colin say his main was an engineer? That was….surprising. Haha (Or maybe I’m just behind in my info)

Still, overall, satisfactory interview. He’s said a lot of the same in other comments, so for the most part he’s consistent in his information. They sound like they have a lot of things planned (which we knew), we just have to give them time to do them. The further elaboration on the delay for Guild Halls, and GvG was nice info. Capes…good to hear about those too.

Just a lot of information here. Many thanks to Colin. =)

Last tier doesn’t mean the last gear grind, unfortunately. If they raise the level cap they will likely introduce gear for whatever the new level cap is, For example, there could be Ascendent gear that only level 90 players can wear if the cap is raised to level 90. Hopefully they cut it with this vertical progression already. I’m tired of refitting my character (who still doesn’t have all ascendant accessories).

Depends on how you interpreted it. I think what they were trying to say is the level of difficulty to obtain like Ascended currently is was planned all along. And perhaps it really was planned but desided not too do it as in initial testing they thought it would be too hard to obtain. They thought the players would simply charge more for it. Or at least charge more for the mats. A lot of pepole thought that. Now in a sence they are artifically restricting supply. Still waiting for those vision crystals to appear in the trading post.

And frainkly you know what I want to see the origional quote before I jump to any conclusion becouse pepole make posts like this and the community runs away with them. When quoteing a dev please be as close to what they actually said as possible.

how would that be a new tier? legendary already exists in the game. and since legendaries have stat levels equal to ascended, the only noticeable difference would be the particle effect created by the trinket and the ability to switch stats

Kaaboose and I and a couple of others have given them ample long lists of updates ui improvements, fixes for combat etc. I don’t just come here to complain I’ve given them great examples of these same problems other mmos have had and have fixed without any major issues. There’s a pride thing happening here however that seems to be preventing them from using history’s examples and making the game much much better for the players that have stayed and in the process capture the attention of the players who left because we got fed up waiting forever for them to realize what’s wrong and to actually fixit.

I was a little disappointed that dungeons may never get a hard mode thus rendering agony resistance forever useless.

He did make a very good point that those 3 settings would splinter the dungeon base further, but that just made me think that perhaps one of the settings should be done away with or at least merged to some degree as they are essentially the same thing, but one has sadly less reward.

That said, it has been thrown out there that they will continue to revamp dungeons, and world bosses, etc. Making them more difficult and more interesting. There is the possibility some of the dungeons will be difficult without needing a hard mode. All we can do is wait and see though.

You can’t disagree with the response though. It has sound reasoning. Look at how fragmented the playerbase is in Guild Wars 1. I at times waited for a very long time for normal mode.

Guess I really need to start working on the dungeons some more before they buff them even more if I want to do all the paths of all the dungeons.

As Mungrul points out above the only truly new contribution to our fund of knowledge is that Ascended was not planned but rather was a response to experience post release of the game. That’s a rather large admission, but nothing here is really game-changing. He said Ascended ‘should’ be the last tier, not that it ‘will’ be the last tier. And, this is essentially what they said back in November, i.e., that there were no plans for a new tier of rarity post ascended. The plan was to carry vertical progression forward through ever more powerful infusions applied to the ascended gear. VP is all about the ascending power level of the game and it really makes no difference in how it is implemented. It would be news if they announced that VP would end with Ascended gear and that Ascended would be the final tier. That would not only be news, but good news, but I doubt we will ever hear it. Bottom line, not much new here.

This whole “legendary” armor worries me a bit though (and I guess weapons fall under that category as well).

When they do eventually raise the level cap, and these “legendary” things scale to the next level cap, what is going to happen exactly? Are they going to end up in your bags since you can’t wear them anymore cause you aren’t level 90? Meaning you are going to have to re-gear your character all over again cause you don’t meet the requirements for your “legendary” gear.

Or are they going to level with you like Heirlooms in WoW? Where they change level with you as you are leveling. So when you hit 81, they will be 81. 82, 82. 83, 83, etc etc all the way up to 90.

I think this is the one thing that worries me. These weapons/gear are supposed to always be top tier, and when we get a level increase to 90, what is going to happen to them? Will we be naked with them in our inventory and have to re-gear our characters?

Ignoring the fact that people like being able to get max stat gear quickly so they then only have to worry about aesthetics, here we have proven that ArenaNet did outright LIE back in November, and that Ascended WASN’T planned prior to release.

I don’t think Chris Whiteside actually said it was planned, a few people have pointed out recently that he qualified his statement back then with an IF.

Nevertheless what Colin says here doesn’t make sense:
1. Max stat gear was meant to be easy to obtain, it was cosmetics that were meant to be a grind.
2. Why make changes to make exotic gear easier to obtain after the Nov patch via karma jugs etc and increasing how many dungeon tokens were earned.

They made their own bed there.

Regardless of what they actually did or did not say a lot of people were unpleasantly surprised when they found out exotic was not the end of it. You can’t possibly deny the kittenstorm that it when ascended gear was announced. Anet even apologised in the end for how they handled it.

A lot of people were expecting a game with max stats set like in GW1. I believe that the original people who were working there years ago probably did have that in mind, but reality is it isn’t.

So people want some certainty from Anet and they’re not getting it. You’re right, they don’t want to make any definite statements with an eye on the future, but here’s the thing: a lot of people apparently do want a definite statement about this.

Anet is not owned by Anet for a while now. They don’t control their destinies any more. It is the reality of things and I understand why they don’t want to give a definite answer, but that’s just not good enough for a bunch of people out there.

And it’s their own fault that a lot of people have this expectation of them. Their tone has changed over the years and not everyone saw it. They certainly didn’t do anything to wake people up about it.

But this is what it has come to now. For me the reality is that the Anet I knew for years, no longer exists. For me that’s a harsh realisation because I very much enjoyed those years, but you can’t blame players for being upset about this.

It was a big discussion last year and it hasn’t been resolved to the satisfaction of the people who thought they were getting a game that had fixed max stats. Then it wasn’t and level cap raises were mentioned.

Say what you want Vayne, but this discussion won’t go away. It will keep coming back and it will only stop with all those people quitting the game.

It’s fair enough if Anet wanted to take a different direction, but they could’ve told people more clearly about this and they didn’t. They tried to sneak it in and it backfired.

Will the majority of players quit over this? I don’t think so, but it just doesn’t feel like they’ve been very honest over time.

Now they are being honest, a lot of people find out they don’t actually like what they are saying. Oh well, 3.5 million boxes sold…so kitten those players right?

Food for thought. When asked about Legendary armor being introduced Colin came into the thread and gave an answer.
“Not anytime soon”

Take from it what you will. At least the legendary armor has been in the database since release. I would be relieved if they implemented it. Grind once then done and if you change your build/traits all you do is click to change your stats.

Of course they won’t come soon. They first need people to grind for ascended weapons, then ascended armour and then a level cap raise….start all over with ascended gear for level 90 and then maybe legendary armour.

Quite simply by the time those were implemented they had planned to so something about how easy it already was.

I actually wonder if Colin is getting mixed up, back in November they said ascended gear was being introduced to bridge the gap between exotic gear and legendaries because legendaries were being made quicker than they expected, which makes more sense. I know for a fact that they were annoyed at how fast people made legendaries after launch.

Colin did say that they want Ascended to be the last tier- thank the six!
Housing! YaY!

Last tier that has better stats. Legendary armor will the last “tier”.

They are the same stats, just for the heads up.

I’m aware of that. Hence why I said what I said and put tier in quotes.

Maybe I was out of the loop, but shouldn’t it have been obvious to everyone they were being quite shady when they announced the bump to legendary stats to make room for ascended?

They had an option of not introducing any more ascended items to the game and leave it at trinkets.

Colin Johanson: “Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”

It would be more tolerable if the grind for Ascended gear is the same as that for Ascended Rings ie 10 Pristine Fract Relics – about 15hrs with your regular party.

Apologies to those who may find my posts on GW2 forums offensive and hateful.

Just finished watching it, and I’m retiring from the ascended debate. I’m still not sure I take what Colin said as absolute truth, but it sounds like that’s the official line from now on. So be it.

My parting words on the topic: I was a much bigger fan of ANet’s mistake than I am of their solution.

In regards to the rest of the interview, Colin said a lot of good things that they’d like to do, but it’s awfully frustrating that ANet rarely says what they actually ARE doing at any given moment. Basically everything Matt brought up was met with “yeah, we’d like to do it someday… and when we do do it, it’s gonna be AWESOME!”

The possibility of physical and mental collapse is now very real.
No sympathy for the Devil, keep that in mind.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.

I am glad Colin said they will make the next race based on the popular speculations. It makes me happy to know they may one day hire a voice actor to speak for a quaggan hero.
