I sincerely like the effort to introduce the selfless and thoughtless potions as new form of flare, but the mechanics have areas that need improvement.

The unearned Evon Gnashblade and Ellen Kiel badges are persistent when transforming, zoning, and allowed in dungeons/spvp/ fractals; yet, the earned Selfless or Thoughtless Potion effect are not. The effect is either denied, or removed during the normal course of gameplay. For example, during a world boss trains, the effect will be taken off after porting to different regions.

Furthermore, the offset of the effect is at equal height with the character nameplate, effectively covering up the appeal all together. Although the halo is already too translucent to be noticeable even at close proximity, the fact that it is also covered by the nameplate makes it virtually unnoticeable.

Summary restriction and limitation:

  • Restricted in dungeons.
  • Restricted in fractals.
  • Restricted in sPvP.
  • Effect removed upon zoning
  • Effect blocked by nameplate (selfless potion halo)
  • Effect too translucent to be noticed (selfless potion halo)
  • (new) Effect is not applied to Mesmer clones. [»]
  • (new) Effect is too low and too small on Asura. [»] [»]
  • (new) Effect removed upon transformation (e.g., tonic, mist form, elite).

(The election badges suffer from none of the above.)

I hope the restriction and limitation points listed above are simply an oversight that will be addressed, as they conflict with the very nature of the item function; a new form of shiny flair to enhance character presentation.

Thoughts?

Agreed, there is certainly an inconsistency with various living story reward restrictions. For example, as mentioned by the community, one can transform into a Watchknight in a dungeon, yet they still restricted from halo/horns.

I am also highly disappointed with the prominence of the halo by comparison to the horns. To correct this, the halo height and transparency must be reduced..

I am not a big fan of flair items, but if you are going to provide something, then at least the visual should be unobstructed. Besides, calling it a halo is a bit daft. That thing is no glorious circle of light, it is more a dull golden ring. Where is the vibrant shine like the Wings of Dwayna has?

And it pops off when zoning? Makes no sense, man, makes no sense at all.

IDK why Anet puts so many location restrictions on harmless items like these so often. If it doesn’t give you an advantage in combat, stats and so on and are purely visual, I don’t see why they’re not usable everywhere.

Going that far would be bad of course. I would not want to play if everybody ran around with a glaring sun above their heads, and I doubt anyone would use them if it were so.

The radiance from the Dwayna wings however is much more what I was thinking.

I agree, the usage restrictions on this potion (and items like it) are completely unnecessary. Maybe it is just an oversight?

This is most likely the case. Unless everyone continues to raise a big stink about it, Anet will probably do nothing. Think of the uproar that happened with flamekissed armor. They have to gauge the amount of upset players against the amount of work involved in fixing these issues to see if its actually worth their time. I know that sounds appalling to some, but its the harsh reality of running a business with a finite budget and limited time for employees to work on assets.

Was disappointed when I saw my horns go away after a TP.
And the sad part is that I don’t think they will ever fix this, because this is how pet works since release (for no apparent reason) and they never fixed that and in that case they even have a direct economic interest into making pet more usable.

If Anet is going to operate on a fire-and-forget mindset, then they need to do more work on the front end to make sure things are right before they get thrown into a patch, and I’m pretty sure we all know that won’t be happening.

Most likely not intentional, they probably didn’t test it out in all different parts of the game. They probably just checked the visuals (different races, armours etc.). Since the election badges do work perhaps they can just reuse that code.

Not being a gem store item hurts the possibility of this ever getting fixed. Even though it’s been made clear on the forums by players that it is in desperate need of a fix.

Agreed.

In terms of the halo, I find there are too few sanctified items available in the game, while there certainly is an abundance of satanic options. A properly implemented halo will be a great addition to a growing theme.

Oh man, this.

My character has this whole holy knight/paladin theme going on, but there’s so little to work with…there’s very few weapons and effects that fit the theme. I wish there was more divine/radiant type equipment in game.

Not sure if I can mention other games on this forum, but to answer vaguely it was from another (now shut down) NCsoft game.

Other than by artistic choice, the only other reason I can think of the halo being so transparent was during testing they found it obscured more than an acceptable amount of the character, probably the character’s name.

This is the Guild Wars 1 halo. Not only did it have a golden glow but it had a trail of golden sparks coming off it when you ran (if you look at the halo you can see the edges are smeary because of the constant flow of sparks dripping from it). I was hoping this version would be like it. However I doubt they will change it, no matter how many complain. I base this opinion on the Everlasting Watchknight potion, only good for 5 minutes and then a THIRTY minute cooldown. Totally unreasonable restrictions that was not changed in spite of numerous posts complaining about it,

They’ve been making art passes on Charr dungeon armor lately. I wouldn’t say that an art pass on the Selfless/Thoughtless effects aren’t a possibility.

This is the Guild Wars 1 halo.

Jesus! Does GW1 really look that good?!

In many ways, the fun items in Guild Wars 1 were far superior. Many items were better designed, the horns (similar to the thoughtless potion) for example were on your forehead and had smoke fuming off the bases.

In fact the whole cosmetic system was better designed. Costumes were stored by an NPC so they didn’t need to be in inventory, all of your characters could wear the same costume once bought and it could be worn in combat. Potions lasted for an hour and you could wear them in combat.

One of the things a friend and I would do was to both use the same transformation potion and then go out to an area looking identical and in a fun shape. It would be like using Quaggan tonics and being able to go into combat like that. Innocent fun impossible in this game because of the completely unnecessary restrictions this game has on fun items.

Why ANet ditched a fun system to put in and keep a rigid potion/costume system is beyond me. It makes me think they have forgotten how to have frivolous fun.

I think the problem here is players seem to be under the impression this is supposed to a type of armor skin. It’s a potion, it works like other potions work.
Instead of complaining that a potion is working like a potion, what you should be asking for is armor that has a skin like these that you could wear at any time.

From the pictures, it looks as if the Thoughtless Horns are at least coming out of the Asura’s head. What’s with the horns floating in midair way ABOVE a human? This can’t be as intended… can it? Tell me they’re planning on fixing the horns so that they emerge from the head.

In fairness, some of the aesthetic rewards have been all over the place in terms of compatibility. I can use my Flames of Kryta with tonics, for example, even if I’m a plastic spider or holiday dolyak. It would be a lot more sensible for me to be able to have a halo over my transformed head than for me to be able to hold things, but here we are. Just because it’s called a potion doesn’t really tell us anything about the mechanical workings of the item.

(I have a collection of different endless tonics, and they behave very inconsistently. Some let me roll through forms directly, some require me to become human again, etc.)

I’m disappointed that I can’t become a beautiful Celestial Toxic Krait, but, knowing how disjointed aesthetic items can be, I’m not totally surprised.

On the bright side, the halo has looked pretty great on the charr I’ve seen wearing it, so I’m planning to try it out on my norn, or hang onto it for when I eventually make a charr.

I’m also more psyched than I should be at the prospect of getting the Selfish Potion and stacking the horns on top of my Devil Horns. I think the floating horns are strange, but, as long as they’re here…

Didn’t you hear? They are releasing an armor “halo/horns” in the gem store. It will cost you 1000 gems, but will look even more impressive than the “selfless/thoughtless” potion. ;-) On a serious note…

The halo does not look 10g worth. The design looks like it was coded/made in less than a days work. The particle effects look less vibrant and lively as a halo should (bold, bright and spewing stars). The opaqueness of the halo is too clear. Honestly, I think A-Net is beginning to cut corners, in terms of looks. Ha ha. Other than that, I do enjoy them wanting to reward players for doing LS… But the halo does need some “improvements” done. :-)
