Cutting the lawn
I just got a picture in my mind with a huge lawn becoming bigger and bigger the more kids are showing up… poor kids xD
Not rocket science, you pay the $20 and they share it out between them, because it only took them a fraction of the time to cut the lawn compared to one kiddie doing it.
So many words about a very simple problem !
Not his point… his point is that in GW2 they all get the $20. He forgets that in GW2 his lawn scales up in size to accommodate the extra kids however.
Well can you imagine the posts here if people got a percentage worthy of the effort (or time) they put into an event.
How about 20 bucks and a clip round the ear as a bonus !
If ANet wanted that lawn cut, they would spawn it cut already.

Kind of like a Gold, Silver or Bronze level of effort recognition?
Because in this game it’s expected that other people will show up while in your example the other kids were unexpected.
The game prepared for the extra, your example did not.
Also, yes, as someone else stated, when the extras show up in game the lawn accomodates for teh extra help while in your example it doesn’t.
Well like several people said, you can not really compare it to some work in real life. First of all all kids here paid around 40-50 Euro at least to be even able to maw the lawn. Second mawing here is considered to be a fun activity. Like at a party where everyone showing up gets a drink for free or a cookie. You would not give away all 20 free drinks if only 2 or 3 people showed up, I think.
Nearly equal loot is actually a design decision but I like how it’s done here I don’t like having to compete with people about farmingspots or events. If people want to do an event scaled for a higher number of people with only 2 or 3 people they get the pleasure of accomplishing something not everyone can do, but they don’t do a “work”.
The original metaphor is rather flawed. For one thing, this is a video game where the rules of fairness are merely an arbitrary creation of the developers. It has no application to the real world at all.
Furthermore, in your example the $20 is a cost incurred upon an actual person. If five kids show up, each demanding $20 for helping out, then the $100 total is actually being paid out by someone. In GW2, the loot and gold that drops isn’t coming from anyone or anywhere. You’re not swindling anyone by bringing more helpers.
But, to answer your question: ArenaNet wants to cultivate a game where you are encouraged to work together with other players, and in some cases discouraged from not bringing a full team (dungeons). It gets more people involved in events and things, and incentivizes helping others around you with what they’re doing — and in the end, people get to accomplish more in general, as a result.

Real life capitalism encouraged anti-social behaviour.
A world where resources can be multiplied by the people who need it is great.
And even then, we’re still seeing certain resources get horded and inflated to astronomical prices.

And that is exactly the motivation behind this thread, people who need help shouldnt be paid as much as people who dont. Its only natural as my example shows.
Yet another example of how FoTM and the gear grind mentality or the dungeoneer leetest mentality is damaging the game’s originaly design. Horizontal was the original goal with this game, I’m sorry people can’t handle that but that’s the truth Nov 15th will be remembered.

Why, what’s Nov. 15th?
This is really funny, cause every MMO I’ve played, and GW1, had a vocal crowd insisting that people who group deserve more and demanded grouping incentives.
This is one of the brilliant features implemented by Anet to solve the player playing with other players problem you find in other MMO’s. Non-competitive quests and resource nodes are other features that address the same problem. In other MMO’s players of your own faction can be your worst enemy. And, adding more players to a zone there is like adding more rats to a cage. Eventually, they begin eating each other.
Anet, solved the problem of players successfully playing with other players through thoughtful game design. What you see as a problem I see as a solution.

Exactly my thoughts. Until Nov 15th this game was the best game out there in terms of player equality and gameplay choices. Now however FoTM seems to be the only way to get any loot drops of any kind. Until the loot is fixed so that it is indeed equal (ie as soon as they finally learn from history and remove DR) then it will return to being an equal affair.
It is just as important to games as it is in any social structure to have equality in everything. Having a longer more dramatic grind for those who actually have lives and can’t be online constantly is not equality in my opinion sorry and demanding that more be done to further segregate players by their play styles due to their real life circumstances doesn’t help matters.

Exactly. I think this is probably one of the biggest innovations that GW2 was brought to the MMO genre. And it seems to be working out.
The OP seems to have a definition of fun where they get more than other players. There are plenty of other MMOs that foster the competition of virtual resources because they were designed with that deliberate timesink to stretch out sub fees. Making players compete for virtual resources mean each player has to play more and thus shell out more $$$.
Most MMOs in the genre have been designed around this traditional timesink but oddly many of them have gone F2P. It will be interesting to see if the mechanic continues if MMOs start to be designed B2P or F2P from the start.
GW2 is anti Elitist. I think the forum/game your looking for is Aion or FFXI. Your welcome.
PS. The guy who farms for 6 hours a day and makes a kitten ton of coin, yea, he IS doing better than the guy who isn’t. This is a team game, everything about it is about working together. You don’t even get to win your own story, so don’t expect to be some awesome famous guy with X weapon, X title, X kills. Cause truly people who don’t work well with others, don’t play well in GW2. And those people are the ones getting “less”.

Unless you sit there and kill the same kind of mob in the same kind of area for over 30 minutes DR should not even kick in. It’s not hard to make profit without farming you know.
Wuuuuut is this??
I’m sorry, man. This is a socialist cyber reality, because unlike real economics, ‘resources’ aren’t necessarily limited here.
So don’t work so hard, okie?

You described me lol.. But I sit in the same area killing the same zombies for hours, cause I want mats not so much yellows and gear drops. I don’t notice any DR, but its hard to count the mobs etc when they come in zergs.. I like the rarity of the “rares” cause then its like woo 30s lol. For the most part though I only make money off mats which is about 50-75s per the 6 minute event. I DO notice decreased xp from the event over a few hours though. But meh.. I’m already level 185…

I just logged in because I had to comment here. This is the best, most original, inventive and totally implausible ‘entitlement’ thread I have ever seen. What comments! What insight! What a stupid, useless, analogy for a pointless claim to being worth more than everyone else, by virtue of being able to do the same thing as a couple hundred thousand other people. Or is soloing events elitist now?
A farmer went out early in the morning to hire workers for his farm. He agreed to pay them a hundred dollars for the day and sent them into his farm to work.
At about nine in the morning he went back out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, ‘You also go and work in my farm, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went.
He went out again at about noon and at about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. At about five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.
He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my farm.’
When evening came, the farmer said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
The workers who were hired at about five in the afternoon came and each received a hundred dollars. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a hundred dollars. When they received it, they began to grumble against the farmer. ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a hundred dollars? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
The fun comes from having more than someone else.
I think we owe it to ourselves to spread this message throughout the world
I am not comply sure what this is all about but if your talking about rewarding system playing the game in it self IS the reward. Its like getting sweats after you eat something its unneeded the reward is the fact that you where able to eat in the first places.

Interesting tale… has nothing to do with GW2 DEs giving Gold/Silver/Bronze reward levels for participation or the fact that the amount of “work” needing to be done would have scaled up as more people arrived, but interesting. And by interesting, I mean not really interesting at all.
The structure of this game is different than others, it actually rewards people for working together, instead of punishing you for it. Yes you may be awesome and able to solo something that another group of 5 or so is killing together, but maybe that group just understands the game better than you. together, than can kill several mobs in the time it takes you to solo, and all get loot from each of those mobs. Play smart, not hard. Enjoy a game that actually encourages teamwork.

It was in direct response to the OP. I must have missed the part where the lawn grew bigger because additional kids showed up. Anyways, sorry you missed the point

Ah, sorry… the thing was that the OP missed that point which really made his argument look silly. Then when you left that nuance out…
If it’s any consolation Amos, that’s the story I originally thought of too! Haha.
