Something strange happened after GW2 decided to bring back gear progression, I realized that if the game is shifting towards gear and gear strength well we have a 10 ton gorilla MMO called WoW that not only has gear progression but raids and dungeons joined via a simple tool that are easy and friendly to use….

GW2 main selling point to me was NO gear progression, whether they said it or not it was implied….So now GW2 feels like a TRUE Korean grind fest MMO with TRUE gear progression…

Thank you from Blizzard.

Well there’s no item type you really have to work for (except Legendary weapons), and Colin said in an Interview at Pax that they thought exotics would be harder to get, but they weren’t. So now they added Ascended to give us something to really work for besides Legendaries. Colin said that they don’t plan on adding more tiers and the only thing we can do is trust him. I don’t, but I have to live with that.

As someone who does not run dungeons, does not do fractals, and hates crafting. I never have much gold, all I do is WvW and even that is going down hill. The Ranks were not supposed to add Stats, yet we have 2 that add stats. One adds 250 Vitality = Quite a bit of health. The other adds an extra 100 power and condition damage.

I have a feeling these WvW Seasons where we will see no updates for almost 2 months at a time to WvW is just going to kill it more and promote unfair zerging gameplay, worse than it already is.

So, I have been finding it harder and harder to log in, lost all motivation to play when Ascended started coming out, and now I just feel like I will never be able to gear my chars.

As a casual player, and I mean casual (2 – max 3 times a week for only a few hours) will never see a lot of gold/materials or the time to craft for ascended.

Well I’ve gotten over most of my crafting rage. I don’t need to have everything right away with the ascended and I pretend that pres and legendaries don’t exist for me. And alt token gone, oh well I will just go back to enjoying the game like I used to and doing as I feel.

Do you want to know the truth?
I love fractals.

I used to play 1-4 daily fractals.

I didn t play them last 2 months because i need Money to get ascended weapons to play fractals

Fractals now are for rich players only because if they ever remove the cap you will need 55 AR and to be ready when that will happen you can t play fractals.

Quite sad

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

IMO, fractals were added to appease the wow-grind type players, the ones that simply want to do the same thing over and over (and over) again trying to achieve a specific item, but that item has the tiniest chance of dropping, ever. A very distinct carrot/stick mentality. It’s not my play style. I’ve done a few low level ones to experience them, but that’s all I desired from it.

We’ll see how the vertical progression goes. I wasn’t happy about ascended, however I’d made my peace that it was coming months ago. We’ve been giving some “reassurance” that this will be the last tier of gear, although not necessarily of power creep. Admittedly, I am not happy with this, I do not want a “shallow power curve” or however it was put, I want the power plateau we were told to expect. However, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, for now, and ride it out. Ascended doesn’t seem that hard to get right now. Just requires some patience, which I can manage as not having it doesn’t bar me from any of my game play.

Locking the weapons (and the armor) to crafting doesn’t bother me (much) personally, since I was planning on doing at least all of the crafting professions at least once. It’s annoying that it’s account bound upon acquire, since for the time being my husband and I share the crafting, but this simply gives me incentive to level mine now. Something I had been procrastinating on.

So, to the general question do I play as much? Yeah, I still play quite a bit. Actually, I’ve been logging in more now since my husband is playing again. Who knows what the future brings though…

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Which begs the question. If GW2 has the same gear progression as other games does it really have it’s innovation intact? How exactly is it better? That’s what I’ve been asking myself.

Sure they have an open world and some events are enjoyable to a degree but have they damaged this part of the game so much that it’s no longer overall better than the other games out there?

I’d say yes they have damaged it. It’s not beyond repair but while they are revamping the major world boss mechanics they also need to take a look at the lack of diversity lack of even the Arenanet trinity in PVE builds, the mechanics used on champion level bosses and why they make CC and condition damage builds completely useless, the lack of a pure support role, and the rewards imbalance between doing WvW/Dungeons compared to doing open world boss fights even under their new system.

Basically other than logging in and doing one’s daily and grinding (which I know most people hate and thought buying this game would remove that factor) there really isn’t much more to the game. People also tend to make the false impression that this game is casual, it’s so nowhere near casual, it’s more relaxed than the rest I’ll give you that but not casual. Themepark grind would be more appropriate.

You are totally wrong

Players who plays fractal does it for PURE FUN.
0 Reward most of high level fotm players already have all fotm skins….they play fotm anyway.

A fotm player is poor because he likes to play an unrewarding content.

No I don’t play as much. Mainly because all my guildies left except for 3 of us. Then there is that feeling of way too much time and gold needed to get where I want to be. Or that feeling that it wasn’t supposed to be like this.
I don’t think this game can be compared to a WoW grind. There the grind had purpose with the introduction of harder/more challenging content that required it.

Ascended items have three uses at the moment:

1) FotM – You can’t have too much Agony Resist.

2) WvW – a small advantage over other players – but in the hands of an organized WvW guild with zerg busting intentions – can be quite deadly.

3) Dungeons – faster runs for those that like to minimize time inside.

There is no new ‘harder’ content to apply this advantage in PvE. There will soon be the typical complaints of PvE being faceroll easy since it was balanced with exotics being top stats. The Devs will be stuck at a crossroads as more people get the gear. Should they leave the content as is or add harder content to satisfy the ascended geared crowd while leaving behind the rest.

I did express that it was my opinion as to why it was instated.

Perhaps you and yours play it for fun, and are poor because it doesn’t reward you. I can’t say that I understand how you can repeatedly do the same…what 10 or so missions?….repetitively and not find it boring, or grindy, but to each their own. However, from my experience, the people playing it are not doing it for fun. Far from it.

Yes, I have heard the gripe that higher levels aren’t as rewarding, and have seen many a call for the revamp of the loot for the higher levels. I’ve not done them, I have no opinion on the matter.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Yes I still play.

Regardless of all of the ups and downs this game as already endured, I would still choose this game over any other current MMO on the market.

The only time I would disagree that GW2 is the best, is when comparing to GW1. Though a lot of people hated the grind. It was a small, niche community and I made a lot of friends, and have many, many fond memories. That’s what makes a fantastic game imo.

But yes, GW2 is still fun for me, even if I don’t agree in every direction. That’s why I make voluntary effort to talk about it on the forums

A big downfault for me, is trying to stuff the players with bloated rewards all of the time.

Not as much as the first few months after release, but still a moderate amount.

While the introduction of ascended weapons can be seen as the first step towards a gear treadmill, until they actually release content that having ascended weapons would be absolutely required. Oh wait, there’s the Fractals of the Mists for that. never mind then.

I agree with you. And for the record,Colin’s idea of what casual is doesn’t fit with most people view of what it is. I find that i login less now because of the direction the game’s going. Its fine by me i have no regrets i got my money’s worth out of the game. There are other games out there to try.

Since the Sept. 3rd patch, I’ve played a total of about 10 minutes. Although there’s been a lot of features in the game that I’ve truly enjoyed, it has progressively moved toward grind and progression through gear acquisition. And quite frankly, other games do that better — and with purpose. There’s really nothing in GW2 to grind gear for.

Since release, there’s been lots of temporary, fluff content updates, but nothing of any consequence to me. And now we have gear-based progression on top of that, plus an ever-increasing emphasis on farming. If I’m going to get caught up in that style of game play, I want the content to justify it.

So, no thanks. All in all, did I get my money’s worth out of the game? Sure. But now it’s time for me to move on to other things.
