Seems to be an increase with the ToK piling up in my bank inventory. I have all my alts at 80 and don’t find them very useful. I keep them in case I level more alts, which I won’t until the new and improved trait system is more forgiving than its current form. Now I know that with new players coming to the game, they might find the ToK useful, but I’m just curious the general consensus.

The ToK are about the only reward with the new login system that I don’t benefit from. Maybe it would be better for them to be traded for those players that would use them? Suppose I could use them for skill points and turn them into gold.

I’m up to 227 Tomes of Knowledge now. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do with them once I hit a full stack. I already have 6 level 80’s (one of whom is basically a mule that I only got to level 80 so I could park him at World Bosses to farm for the collection trinkets.) I have no plans to make another level 80 unless ANet releases a new race. (Which seems unlikely.)

Would definitely love to be able to sell them to players who want them, but I’m fairly certain ANet will never, ever do this since it completely trivializes the leveling process/experience.

As a player who enjoys making new alts to test out builds or what not I am very grateful for every and any ToKs I get. It is better to be rewarded something instead of nothing albeit I agree if one truly has no use for them it would be nice to have an option allowing us to convert it into something else.

But yeah – for levelling the more ToKs the better?

I have a growing stack of them in the bank that I don’t really expect to ever use.

I DO plan on making at least 2 more characters at some point. Holding off until they add another race to the game, which I expect that will happen at some point, and even if it doesn’t I’ll probably get tired of waiting and create characters of the last 2 professions I don’t have (Thief and Warrior) eventually. I’ve already got the character slots bought.

But I’m one of those crazy people who actually ENJOY leveling. I like going around various zones, doing zone completion and having my character get better as I go. I like the feeling of progression. So I won’t use my Tomes for that.

I mean, like you said, I guess I could use them for skill points, but I have more than enough skill points lying around as it is. I’m not one of those people who have hundreds upon hundreds of them on every character, but most characters have a good stockpile of 50+ at this point (and that’s on 6 characters). And most of the time I can’t really be bothered to do all the research and clicking required for turning SP into Gold (unless I’m really low on gold and in dire need of more). So more skill points aren’t really something I’m particularly interested in either.

I guess there’s black lion key runs, which the tomes would probably prove very handy for. But I’m not really into that sort of thing either, too much repetitive grind, and my crap luck would probably mean it wouldn’t be worthwhile anyway.

Not really sure what they could do to make them more appealing, though. Maybe they could allow conversion of multiple tomes into a trait unlock or something, that might be handy for players with alts and such in the new trait system. I could certainly see myself using something like that a lot more than using them for levels, at least. But that still doesn’t do much for people who have all the alts they want and no interest in more.

Hmm, I love getting them. Once I finish my 8th alt so I have all the classes I’ll use them on new characters to 1)Run through the personal story, 2)Map complete, and finally 3) Cash out the skill points for w/e.

At minimum you get skill points out of them, with a little more effort you get all the level up rewards.

Yah, I’m only at 179/300 for Luck. I haven’t broke down and done the power salvage from ectos and ordering stacks of blues to salvage just seems boring. So, I just salvage what I get when I get and click through stacks of luck when I use my artificer to condense them.

Let’s be clear about that. For those of us who don’t have the time, or interest if we’re being honest, to play multiple alts, the tomes of knowledge serve little purpose.

Even the skill points are moot given that criteria.

I have almost 200 scrolls of knowledge as well. Once the monthly achievements, for skill points, disappeared . . . so did my need to hoard and use these items. Like the tomes, the scrolls just occupy a space for the time when they will matter again.

I find them useful because I have a habit of deleting my characters once they’re Level 80 and geared in Exotic. I mostly do PvP, though, so there isn’t any way to level up other than with Tomes of Knowledge.

If I ever have all Level 80 characters I want to keep, though, I’ll just destroy any extra tome I get. That’s already what I do with all these ascended materials. No need to re-purpose items for compulsive hoarders.

I’ve got more tomes and scrolls than I’ll ever need given their uses currently. Even if 8 new professions were released I still wouldn’t be able to burn through them all unless the level cap was simultaneously raised.

But because they are such good time savers against the game’s grind (grind from my own personal perspective) they keep accumulating in my bank in case I ever have a need to bypass leveling time gates.

Largely a waste of time for me. When I make an alt, i like to level it the proper way and experience everything fully.

Like Mordalus, I have never had any issues with the levelling experience. Whilst i understand some of the angst over the NPE, it certainly hasnt destroyed the game for me and some bits enhance the experience I found.

That said, tomes are useful for those with with a larger number of alts or wanting to get a wvw toon up to speed fast

I have 9 level 80’s with no intention of creating a new character unless a new class/race is introduced so for me they are a total waste. It is not only the Tomes of Knowledge but the Tomes of mentorship do the same thing and since I have taken all my toons through to the end of their personal story they are once again a waste.

EXTREMELY USEFUL for when you create a new character and want to skip the atrocity that is the NPE (I’m not a new player, so I’m not a fan). I gathered a bunch of them, used a scroll, the tomes, and writs I’ve acquired and got to 60 in about a minute. Then I did a few personal story instances to 66, then crafted two disciplines and ding 80.

At 8 lvl 80s, I’m still creating alts and I find these tomes extremely useful.

2 advices to those with stacks of tomes:

  • Key farming.
  • Skillpoint to gold.
20 level 80s and counting.

2- Map completion? I assure you map completion is much more fun if you do it while leveling and you will gain more then enough experience to do it without the need to use level booster.

3- And yes, ultimately, this is just some skill point that we can burn in the mystic forge.

I completely agree with this. Every alt has an earning potential, so yes, DEFINITELY worth it. Even if i don’t play the alt immediately, i know there will be a time i will want to go mapping with it or story segments with it. AND it gets me past that horrible NPE on my alts, so i can learn the class without having all the skills locked.

Plus, the more alts ya got, the more chances to make them look utterly rad.
