A lot of people on these forums are cry babies. That’s the truth. I remember when making your character in an RPG increasingly stronger was fun. Now all you have are these crybaby hippies that think everything needs to be exactly fair. Everyone should have on the same gear so the game is completely balanced and everyone is on an even playing field! Guess what, life isn’t balanced. MMOs used to reflect society. You had the elites who had a bunch of nice stuff. Then you had the casuals that put no time in therefore they reaped no reward.

Now you have GW2 come along and make the game completely effortless… Everyone can have a level 80 character in full end game gear in roughly a week or two. Wooooo! Now you have the most bland boring MMO on the planet. No player diversity at level 80. Everyone walking around in exactly the same gear.

Gear grind used to be a way to show initiative. You could tell who actually cared about the game and would put in the work. Now you have people who have no idea how to play but they are wearing the same gear as you…

It’s a slippery slope. No one wants to be forced to run dungeons every other week chasing a carrot on a stick. But some of us who are bored to death would love a bigger hurdle than the current end game. I’m pretty confident in Arena Net’s judgement and ability to make a quality product that whatever they do will be well thought out. They have a lot of great minds in that office and I highly doubt each idea isn’t filtered through before going with a final decision.

OP is vocal minority.

Stick to what you said for years in blog posts, AMAs, manifesto videos, interviews, at the gamescoms.

Gear grind is lazy bad game design and it ruins fun.

Where did they ever say exotic was intended to be the final tier of armor? You seem in the know so I figure you’re a good person to ask this question.

Never-ending vertical progression (especially through gear) as a way to keep players engaged is a spectacularly terrible design paradigm, and it needs to die. Sorry OP, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Having said that, if they can manage to make this a one-time thing and we don’t end up at level 100 doing 600,000 damage per hit with our Exalted Greatswords with +700 Power in the next 1-2 years, it won’t dissuade me from enjoying the game.

Please go ahead and keep adding more item and character progression. Its a very good way to keep pve interesting for a long time. New skins are good, but what if you dont like the new skins or like the one you have more? After all visuals are personal preference.

… and character progression …

What.

Gear = character progression??

: – |

what you mean? Gear is part of character progression.

No, character progression is a narrative concept. It means your character evolves as a (simulated) person – learns, adapts, is permanently altered by their experiences.

Gear/stat progression is not the same thing.

That’s not society. In society, the ‘elites’ put in no time and reap the reward from all the hard-working ‘casuals’. Newsflash: rich people work less hard, not more hard. Why do you think they have so much time to patronise expensive restaurants and lounge around on yachts?

Now you have GW2 come along and make the game completely effortless… Everyone can have a level 80 character in full end game gear in roughly a week or two. Wooooo! Now you have the most bland boring MMO on the planet.

So what you’re saying is you never liked GW2 in the first place, you were against the concept, you fundamentally disagree with the design philosophy behind it, and you still want the developers to listen to you.

Gear grind used to be a way to show initiative. You could tell who actually cared about the game and would put in the work. Now you have people who have no idea how to play but they are wearing the same gear as you…

Could they have adjusted exotic armors? Maybe? But then ever since release people have been complaining that exotic armors were too easy to get and that they wanted legendary armor. This is going to bridge that gap.

As of right now, there is no stat gap between exotic and legendary.

The appeal for legendary is purely cosmetic and yet people are pursuing it.

Now they are putting a stat gap between exotic and legendary with no gap between the new tier and legendary.

This doesn’t fix a progression leap, it creates one!

Sure. If you want to think the worst of everyone. Even now Anet has done nothing to shake my trust with the decisions they’ve made in their games. From the first weeks of GW1 when they started nerfing farming spots, through all the changes they made with that game up until now. And there was a lot of controversial changes made to that game that had equally big reactions from the playerbase.

At this point people are just over reacting based on fears and assumptions when we don’t even know what the big picture is. Wait until later to have a big reaction if/when they ever add new tiers of armor.

The title of this thread is faulty unless you have data to back up your claim of “vocal minority.”

I agree. What an odd claim by the original poster. Regardless of how one personally feels about the announced changes, the idea of how gear and progression would work was sold to the masses very early on. ArenaNet was not shy about their philosophy and their disdain for gear chases.

My point is, everyone who purchased this game knew what they were getting in this area ahead of time. To purchase a product hoping one day the developers would do a 180 on their philosophy is silly. Thus, it stands to reason that everyone who gravitated towards Guild Wars 2 did so because they agreed with the original philosophy.

To now suggest all the players are now a “vocal minority” is just ridiculous. That would be like suggesting all the players opposed to flying mounts are a minority. Or that all the players opposed to 40 man dungeon raids are a minority. Or that players who are in favor of the absence of quest-hub theme-park style adventuring are a minority. These are all principles the game was built upon, and if you (for some insane reason) purchased GW2 despite apparently hating all the design choices the developers originally made, then you have nobody to blame for your disappointments but yourself. Don’t pretend you’re standing on the side of the majority for a second.

then you consider yourself be in the majority then? either him, or you… and how are you sure you are in the majority-camp then? by pretending? i dont get it… oO

The final tier armor was supposed to be easily attainable. If Ascended armor won’t be harder to get than exotics are now, it will technically fit that – but they already said it will be halfway between exotics and legendaries.

So it’s like +2-5 (one stat) increase now. Then it’s + 5 – 10 later. Then it’s like in that other game where my actual base stats is increased by 130k from 5k and I am wearing garbage gear I got 2 years ago. Not sure numbers but I am sure that people have at least 300k life in that game or more by now. Every tier/expansion they add zeros. I don’t want this in GW2, it is one of the reasons why I am here and not over there.

So more on topic: if only minority is complaining….put in an official ingame poll. They did it in beta so it’s already there to use. Let’s have the ‘coke v pepsi challenge’ and put it to a real vote.

All for new stuff but what I do not like is gear creep. Once it starts, it never stops.

Yeah, I used to play UT2004 a lot. Every player spawns with the exact same stats, speed, movement, abilites weapons etc. Bunch of hippy crybabies.

Both sides of a rugby field are the same length, and they get to field the same number of players and play by the same rules. Go on, call them a bunch of crybabies… I dare you…

Look kid, I have to work and attend to my family and the rest of my life. Getting a spot in a dungeon, or playing aginst you in WvWvW I want to stand on an equal footing with you based on my abilities as a player, not how long I can spent glued to a monitor grinding out an unfair advantage.

Seriously guys they are adding ONE new tier to items! ONE! They have already said that they will not be adding more. And yet half the people on this forum are all saying that ArenaNet is going to start adding new tiers every few months. That may be what most companies do but Anet is not most companies and never have been…. Give them a chance before flipping out about something that will probably never happen. And they have said that the new items they are adding the new ascended items exclusively from the new dungeon…. How exactly does that bar you from the new content? They are making you get the stuff needed for the dungeon by doing the dungeon. For proof :https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/ go here under New Rarity Type: Ascended and it says " Players will be able to acquire Ascended Rings in the Fractals of the Mists dungeon, and Ascended items worn on the back can be acquired through special Mystic Forge recipes."

This Ascended gear thing really isn’t a big deal, they already stated their will be multiple ways to aquire it. But not for nothing the stat increase on the few pieces they are releasing thursday are so minimal and will have little impact if any on everyday game play. My entire time here on GW2 never once has gear hindered my progression in PvE, even at those times when I forgot to take my mix of masterwork/rare magic find gear going into a CoE run. Or in wvwvw, whether leveling or trying out a new build with crappy gear it never prevented me from being useful or killing other players, or dying to other players. But bottom line is gear is so insignificant in this game, my failings were never due to gear or lack of, just my own lack of knowledge or ability with given character.

I don’t understand why people are complaining so much. You can’t really call it “gear grind” because it’s not like it’s “kill kittentons of mobs until you get”, it’s “play a new dungeon that Anet has tried to make unique and fun to get gear that allows you to play the dungeon more”. And also, it’s not like the Ascended gear has a major stat increase.

First, everyone complains about not enough endgame, then when Anet adds more endgame, they complain.

In this case, I actually believe they won’t release another tier. I think they’re hoping the ascended and legendary gear will hold people over until their expansion. Then they’ll raise the level cap and add level new appropriate gear within the existing tiers and go “see! we didn’t add any more tiers (but your level 80 stuff are going to be obsolete anyway).”

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”

Never complained….not once about end game. Spent all this time in Wv3….which is my end game. Not dungeons, they can go rot. But not now, have to run it to go back to peak performance in Wv3. It’s also not going to be cheap, will have to save up 900+gold not to mention skill points/karma just to get one legendary weapon….I need a min of 3 (two daggers + staff) for my current build. But whos to say they won’t nerf my build and force me to go to another stat set up?

Sigh.

This looks to be a major grind rivaling most F2P games I have played in the past. Of course just like F2P games: I can cut the time and effort needed by 3/4 by using RL money to buy gold/materials. Working as intended?

Its 5 points, per item, for a minor stat. which is likely to be about 9 points per item, on a major stat. 9×12 = 108. If that was power, a full ascended person has 3 permanent stacks of might on all the time compared to an exotic person

It’s more than +2 stats. That is just one stat on one piece. Look around forums; general consensus is that each part is 8% better individually and when combined in a full set = 26% better.

This is also not factoring in buffed legendaries which will bump the difference in over all combat performance even more.

This makes them BiS and a must have if you want to compete in Wv3.

We don’t even know how Anet is going to incorporate the Ascended into Wv3. They might just make the stats equal to Exotics for Wv3.

They can’t do much unless they make Wv3 exclusive only sets which I doubt they will ever do; to much money and work most likely. Plus all the stat chasers will complain that they can’t own under geared players. So, I think they are fine with Wv3 being a gear check, I guess. This new tier proves it.

I hate to say it but you have no proof whatsoever that the WvWvW gear will be grindy… from my understanding the dungeon gear is rather easy to get. ArenaNet has said absolutly nothing on what to expect for WvW gear so wait to complain until you have solid facts not assumptions….

Proof is already there, sad to say. Getting a set of invader gear requires considerably more effort than getting that same gear in PvE. I expect nothing different unless they revamp Wv3 token/gear system which I don’t expect to happen for a while to come. They seem to be focusing entirely on PvE and trying to please that crowd above all else atm. This is what I see. Maybe it will change quicker, but probably not. We shall see, won’t we?

Even one item is +5 in secondary stat… which is likely +18 stats total. And that is just one ring. Over 14 items, you are going to have something like 300 more stats AND more armor and weapon damage? This is almost as important as the exotic tier, and makes a joke of rares.

I hope it’s worth the alienation to them that it’s creating with the players that were happy with the game and a few weeks from now the players thrilled by this news aren’t off playing pandas anyways.

The rabbit hole they’re going down right now could get very deep very fast trying to pander to that crowd.

They have been saying for awhile that significant WvW changes are on the horizon… even saw a dev post about it a day or 2 ago. Heres the post: “I can’t say too much just yet, but we’re doing some work related to rewards and character progression in WvW even now. It will be a little while before we’re ready to talk about more details though. Rewards, progression, and incentives for play are hot topics around the office. We all care about this stuff and once we have some more details hammered out we’ll let you all know what we’re up to.” It is on the second page of the WvW forum if you’re curious.

Vocal minority actually think, and has memories, and OP just label them as crybabies.

Credibility, people. They quoted Radiance from LOTRO, Attunement from WoW, Ascended item stats > Exotic item stats /w upgrades…

Whats more OP need? OP needs the broader view that complainers really want NEW CONTENT, but not BRAIN DEAD and SHALLOW content (increased stats). If people want a number game they can play other MMOs.

Item progression rules
legendaries are item progression, legendaries are stronger than exotic weapons, and it’s fun to *Grind them.*

thats all i’ve to say.

Because everyone knows, we already have a big PvE content.

I don’t think a 150+ page thread with over seven thousand replies could be considered a vocal minority. I’m against vertical gear progression. Skins and other cool stuff like new runes, sigils or skills is fine, something substantial to spend more skill points on, but not new tiers of itemisation.

Stop lying.

At this moment Legendaries are not stronger than exotic weapons.

Grinding is Optional now.

ANet is making Legendaries Mandatory if you want to be competitive after this patch.

That doesn’t say anything other than they are not going to add another new tier every 3 months not that they are not going to add a new tier down the line say every year or 6 months. Good try though.

Lol sounds like you need to go back to school they said: “We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.” Which also means after 3 months there still wont be any new tiers….. 3 months was used as an example for what other mmo’s do…

You need to start school sir. That spiel is just PR damage control plain and simple. If they were so adamant about not adding another tier in again, why not just say “we won’t add another tier ever”. Because they will, and at that time, everyone can point fingers at this and their behinds will be covered because they said “every 3 months”. Wake up and smell the coffee, you’ve been duped.

Nah no new tiers, but more types of infusion based thingies which (+Ascended gear) makes runes/sigils/etc. obsolete.

What I don’t really understand is why everyone is calling this a “gear treadmill”. If I’m not mistaken, a tier above “exotic” already exists in the original build of the game (legendaries). There is currently a massive gap (progression-wise) between standard exotics and legendaries, and the “Gift” exotics don’t help much. The ascended stat improvements seem marginal at best (likely not affecting game balance outside of Fractals in any meaningful way), and Anet has stated that legendaries will be boosted to remain the “best” tier. If everyone is already working towards a legendary, the established “ceiling” for in-game progression, and existing legendaries get upgraded, all this update really does is even out the progression curve a bit.

If the developers were sure this was a one-time thing they would have said so, emphatically. The fact that he said “three months” seems to imply they’re keeping the door open and not blatantly saying “never,” as they’ve already been caught in a lie several times now. Saying it this way lets imbeciles do damage control for them in the short term, and then in the long term, keep the door open for adding more and more tiers.

Gear grind used to be a way to show initiative. You could tell who actually cared about the game and would put in the work. Now you have people who have no idea how to play but they are wearing the same gear as you…

We had just that in GW1. What you just described is the desire to show off your initiative and how hard you were willing to work. That’s called prestige. All of our GW1 mega grinds were purely about prestige.

Also just because someone has Super Ultra Awesome Staff of Noob Pwnage doesn’t mean they play better that someone without. I saw that daily in Aion.

There is no direct correlation between “things to do” and stat grind. It’s simply the most commonly used method to keep players doing things in your game. GW1 was different, and GW2 was supposed to be different.

Yeah that’s the most likely, and what I personally believe. Just stepping in on someone else’s argument for fun.

Also for the argument that casuals don’t produce as much income, I would just like to point out that Call of Duty is an FPS for casuals.

Legendaries are not higher in tier than Exotics currently. They will be when the next tier Ascended comes out and they will be bumped up. So no…. there isn’t a current higher tier as Legendaries = Exotics.

They uh back tracked on their Manifesto and all the things they said for the past 5 years so what makes you think they won’t back track again? Whatever things they say now can be changed at a whim later on. They already did it once; so what’s to stop them from doing it again and again?

A hundred or so elitists on a forum that have little else to do with their time other than complain about an unreleased feature should not be taken seriously. Especially since it is being given to them for free and none of them have even tried it.

If Arena Net have any sense, which they do. They will wait till a week after the content has been released before taking any serious feedback.
