I dislike this activity for several particular reasons described in another post:

As a gamer who moved to GW2 after multiple Unreal Tournament incarnations, I find Dragon Ball highly frustrating to play.

  • Awful camera work – zooming in and out in cramped tunnels, randomly snapping to bridges.
  • No double jump.
  • No wall dodge.
  • Targeting.

I do understand why GW2 sticks to the usual concept of movement – developing more complicated movements for a single temporary PvP activity makes little sense, and teaching players to use those is no easy task.

Targeting is also a global game concept and yes, one can disable targeting at all, but the skills are designed with targeting in mind – however the recent changes to nearest enemy made targeting even worse than before, doubly so for such a dynamic fast-paced FPS-like game.

But my biggest gripe is camera. Okay, I’ll try using my asura, but… but that just shouldn’t work like it does. I cannot see what hits me or from where, I cannot properly aim because the camera goes back and forth.

So please, ANet: before you come up with something like this again, can we pleeease rework the camera and think of some kind of first person view or at least a no-character view and no-camera-snapping mechanics? Yes, I know it has problems of 1) people investing less in looks and 2) game looking not that good when zoomed in and 3) people performing poorly because they can’t see AoE markers designed for zoomed out camera and 4) those people demanding rework of the current combat tells, but many have asked for it for very valid reasons.

It’s kind of like Unreal Tournament and such, but with less twitch required.

It’s kind of like Unreal Tournament, but with legs chopped off.

Well this is a casual MMO so the skill cap has been tuned low. You can’t expect super-twitch gameplay in a game like this, because the skill difference would be… well like in Unreal Tournament where one skilled player could dominate a full team of unskilled players. While that might sound cool to the “pros”, it would cause so much outrage in the less skilled players Anet just doesn’t want to risk it.

The skill cap in Dragon Ball is still much higher than any PvE stuff in the game. Too bad you cannot play as a team where you could also bring strategy concerning the powerup control into play.

But yeah I can definitely understand your frustration with MMO PvP if UT is where you come from. Being forcibly toned down by the game so that baddies can have fun too is just the way these games are designed.

It’s not just the skill cap, but the buggy nature of the mini-game.

I have a pretty good conection and I rarely lag, but even so, the “auto-attack” hits when it feels like it. Sometimes the animation of the projectile is not even near my target and it still hits, it also works to other way around. I have learned to deal with it, and kinda know how it works despite it being misleading

That said, there are numerous things that can be done better:

- Fix the lag/not hitting issue (as described above)
- Remove aftercast, it’s awful
- Make the 1 skill a skillshot (unlikely but still)
- (if 1 stays autotarget) Make it hit for less, like 10 – upgrade makes it hit for 15
- Make autoattack slightly faster – it takes the exact same time as dodging, if you fight 1v1, there is no reason to dodge
- Get an elite skill when you get all the upgrades
- Increase range on kick and make it hit for 20 – no one would use this if not for the achievment
- Decrease cast time on 2 skill
- Make frost trap hit for 5

Ah… there’s so many other things. One day soon, when I get super bored I’ll do a thread on all mini-game suggested revamps. Which gets forgotten in 2 days.

I don’t understand the hate for this, I also think it’s a fun diversion. There are definitely problems. Most notably the problem of spawning into the middle of what essentially amount to opposing superteams because the top players switch to be on the same side at the beginning of the match. And of course the gameplay is a little wonky. That still doesn’t make it not fun, it just makes it wonky.

Good lord, I wonder how some people would have coped with old-fashioned 8-bit games if they think that Dragon Ball is buggy and imprecise to the point of being unplayable.

Personally I do not like DB that much. Yes, it is a bit like UT and UT was great, but UT had the one thing that is necessary for this kind of fast paced activity: it had a first person cam, since it is a FPS. With the camera in GW2 still seriously broken after 2.5 years, this type of activity is not very enjoyable for me. And I am not expecting the GW2 camera to ever be fixed, so narrow tunnels and the likes are things I avoid if I can.

On a side node I think that the activities themselves should be pushed somewhat. Yes, from time to time they’re in the daily rotation, but since there is quite a few of them and they are not very often part of the daily, they are in a state of neglect. I really love the sanctum sprint and with the zephyr-sanctum crashed and gone the sprint will only be around in the form of the daily activity and it has to share even that place with all other activities. So: make activities a fixed daily again, please

Each time I suffer through it for the extra laurel, I tell myself ‘At least it is not crab toss or the NPE’.

I think it’s pretty fun at first, but very same-ish. Every game you run around the same symmetrical area, doing the exact same things. Which is more or less true of all the activities, of course… but for me, Dragon Ball does seem to ‘get old’ a lot faster.

Well, two of the other activities are like Crab Toss and Keg Brawl, which have less interesting areas to run around. The tunnels and the jumps make this more interesting to me than the Crab Brawl Arena, where you basically run around the same circle.

Yeah, idk. Maybe it’s cause Crab Toss has a variety of abilities from all the stuff, some of which you can combine in useful ways, and giant karka crashing around enjoyably, and two different playstyles based on whether you’ve got the crab or not, and of course is entirely a very different playstyle from the main game. While the area is less interesting, the stuff you’re doing in it entertains me more.

It’s all subjective, of course.

Actually, I quite enjoy Crab Toss. The primary difference is that you are solo with the opportunity to have temporary alliances among players. The random aspect of unknown items (just with there were more variation) adds a small luck element to it as well.

However, what ruins Dragon Ball is the random ‘teamwork’ aspect with a very repetitive activity. Besides the afker’s who never get dealt with (since they are only there for 2 games and out) and the teleport hacking players (very odd that you suddenly appeared behind me). The middle damage buff is way overpowered and it isn’t announced when it is coming (unlike other PvP maps).

There also should have be “mini-brackets” for Dragonball based on player wins and then create a DragonBall specific reward track. Hint, give something for losing but not as much. Give something for most points (highest kill rate), most buffs consumed on a team, and most health bonus consumed along this track as well.

Promotes mindless zerging.

That, I disagree with. EotM promotes mindless zerging. Champion trains promote mindless zerging. But Dragon Ball? It’s not mindless at all. A team that zergs is extremely vulnerable to AoE damage from skill #2. A single player can shut down a whole team if they are chasing one of your teammates in the pit and you have skill #2 handy.

I think Dragon Ball is far from mindless. It works a lot like a small-map FPS. Unless you consider all FPSes to be mindless zerging, then you can’t accuse Dragon Ball of it.

So it has to be worse than EoTM for it to be mindless zerging? You blob up and spawn camp. If one person even manages to get to the aoe, you can just have one person use winds or daze them. But yea I guess it’s harder than fighting a door? >.>

And dear Dwayna no, this does not deserve a reward track.

Dragon ball can be fun , but unfortunately DB is part of a daily for a laurel , so far no win for me because of AFKers at daily reset … AFKers are automatically teleported in the middle of the arena and are killed. Better than that i’ve seen players spawns and run directly to the enemy and don’t fight at …all they want is to be killed so the match end faster.

Love the map but the game mod is not very latency friendly and it is very in favor mouse movers over keyboard turners. Wouldn’t mind seeing how the map played in SPvP.

As far as activities, give me back Snowball Mayhem, still would like that one year round.

Good hunting!

I find it infinitely frustrating, which is funny because I actually enjoyed it the last time it came around. Not sure what exactly changed between now and then, but it seems nowadays I can’t hit anything nor can I avoid anything. My shots will constantly miss despite being 2 feet away from my opponent, but they’ll hit me with near perfect accuracy. All an opponent needs to do is run away when they get low on health and I’ll never be able to kill them as I’ll get obstructed by every wall, hill, and pebble as they run around and grab every health boost on the map, but if I try to do the same thing I die in seconds. Enemy hits a jump pad, they may as well be invulnerable. I hit a jump pad, I’m a flying target just waiting to be nailed by every projectile in the vicinity.

I don’t think its latency as I get no skill lag or anything of that nature (I can tell if my internet is acting up because I’ll get that sort of thing) but who knows, maybe it is. Or maybe there’s just some magical trick to avoiding hits that all the usual PvP’ers know and I don’t (wouldn’t surprise me, honestly). Am I supposed to be constantly mashing left and right to throw off the aiming or something?
