Dragonhunter revealed... meh
Will we have to spec as Dragonhunter to use LB? Or will it be available to all Guards? Not excited for most of the skills n such but LB might prove useful. IDK tho. I picked Guardian so I can be front-line… not back-line support.
This seems interesting. I have guardian all ready to try it out.
Edit: I don’t have a problem with the name either.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

Giving Guardians a “Dragon Hunter” specialization basically says…
“Sorry guys, there are no more thematic aspects to be explored in the areas of light, divine strength, benevolent magic, or spiritual infusion. Instead, you’re going to be dragon hunters (not slayers, because that would be meaningful). That’s your theme. How do you like it? You like it a lot right?”
“You’re going to be the best at hunting dragons (but not actually any more valuable in dragon fights than anyone else).”
Dragonhunter? Really, Arena Net? This is the best you can come up with? Really?!? That name is so amazingly awful. Holy kitten of all kittens……. Who in the office let their 10 year old decide on the final name?
You passed on a great opportunity with such names as Paladin, Paragon, Holy Knight, etc.?
You did right with Chronomancer. You have such a vast amount of rich lore to tap from. How about using it!?
You do realize technically all players in Tyria are ‘dragonhunters’ right? Good grief Anet. Pull your kitten out of your kitten. It’s kind of condescending to the other professions when you think about it.
See people, it’s things exactly like this that turned me from a GW1 Anet supporter to a cynical, jaded, critic of Anerf. The levels of kitten they are able to produce never ceases to amaze me.
>Name specialization of a guardian ‘wrong’ even though the added skills arent even a new class and are just one trait line of guardian
>“HOLY KITTEN ANET”
Your cynicism may be misguided in this instance.
Its not worth exploding over. If enough people dont like it, they can release a small PSA in 3 seconds saying “lol now its paragon.” Save your energy.

The Shield of Courage is a fitting skill for the guardian. The idea of shielding allies, and requiring some clever positioning. Only, this class seems to want to turn the guardian into a backline support class, which seems contradicting.
The point of the elite specializations is to expand the roles of the professions. So if guards suck at backline support now, dragon hunters will make up for that.
This is something everyone keeps forgetting.
“Please stop complaining about stuff you don’t even know about.” ~Nocta
It’s supposed to be called a specialization…not a re-roll.
LOL ! :-D
Obviously.
I doubt it. I’ve been playing GWs for a long time. Anet has honed my cynicism to a fine tuned level.
Let me put it to you another way:
A lot of people feel the Anet train has jumped the track for a lone while now. With the announcement of Chronomancer, an homage to the non existent Utopia profession, it was a sign to many that Anet was working towards getting back on track. Instead, it seems the train sprouted off road tires and a half track and started a vertical climb up the side of the mountain.
I was kinda excited after seeing the concept art this week and after reading and watching the preview post… it’s just meh. First of all the name. It is so cliche, it doesn’t connect to the guardian in any way, like the name you think of when someone tells you “this is the game where you kill dragons, what would be the best profession?” “oh my god, a dragonhunter!” I mean… what?!
And the skills… just another boring ranger like.
I have to agree with your points and first let me say that if this is the direction they’re going in with the masteries, “Finally” and “Really?” is all I can say.
The reason I am saying “Finally” is this. After years of having classes who’s only purpose was to be CC heavy be completely nerfed to the ground because CC should affect the most important mobs in the game because “reasons” (which is pretty much the answer we’ve received when we asked why they are nerfing their own game design so people can’t use it smh) they suddenly see the light and fix that aspect of the game.
The reason I am saying “Really?” is that they added CC as a “feature” of the expansion something that you can only get if you upgrade to the expansion in order to grind to get to be able to use rather than fix the overall lack of CC the game already has.
Now I know it’s far too early but cmon now, part of the reason why expansions get so much money to start off with is to actually FIX problems the game has suffered from for a long time and the lack of CC in the standard layout of skills is one of those problems for Veterans + in PVE.
For me it’s not that they did this to the Guardian it’s that they haven’t really fixed the underlying issues the game already suffers from before trying something new.
Wake me when they fix the Engineer class Explosives Line including bombs and mines, thanks.

So, I’m looking forward to this specialization. But for those of you who don’t want to use a bow or act as a “hunter” on your Guardian, there is good news for you as well: You don’t have to play it! Conveniently, Arenanet made this thing called specializations that are totally optional. You can choose to play the specialization or choose from the other dozens of build options already in existence for your Guardian.
This is definitely the least interesting specialization released so far. Kind of sucks, I had high hopes for the Guardian. I’m just hoping the thief isn’t as big of a let down.

A lot of us were hoping to have a new interesting way to play our guardians. I guess we will continue to play the same way we’ve been playing for the last 2 1/2 years.
Guy who made up name Dragonhunter should specialize for something else imho.

I’m sure everything but Guardian will be fine, I’m pretty sure anet screwed Guardian up on purpose because it is too powerful and they’re afraid of balancing it so instead of just saying that they gave us a useless specialization. Get ready for Healbow/Staff Guardians who try to use traps and can’t comprehend why the traps arent triggering on stationary targets.

To add onto this, conveniently enough you can use the elite specialization and not have to use the longbow. What a thought.

But only two elites have been released yet.

Yes, same with mesmers having to spec into chronomancer to get the shield. All elites will give a new weapon that they can use, but you have to spec into that elite spec to get it.
Please give us a keyring…

Can we have this stickied?
The specialization is just that. A specialization. It does not ruin the class because it takes no functionality away from it. It’s only providing skills that could be useful in a specific combat scenario that the Guardian cannot normally do.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
I feel bad for guardians, I mean is like some children picked the name, it doesn’t even fit guardians at all, and the worst is that they just made them rangers, I really don’t understand who in his/her right mind would approve this name, is like someone who has nothing to do with the game or never even played it just came up with the idea.
Really really lame, I just hope they have something better for us thieves, but I have my doubts after this.

Agreed.
Name could use a rework, Need to see spec in action before I comment on its in combat use.
Templar, Paragon, Knight, Lancer, Valkyrie or any other support-based name would have been superior. Dragon hunter sounds offensive but the class is full defense, and it just doesnt fit right.

Not necessarily, if you consider you still have access to your other weapons and skills. after all, you don’t need to take the specialisation in its entirety.
Depending on the Traits of the specialisation, I can’t see why the specialisation couldn’t add to current front-line builds, which would be augmented with Wings of Virtue (an additional movement and support skill alongside meditations) and Shield of Courage.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Why would I replace my 100% block aegis virtue of courage with an inferior position dependent version of it?
Why would I replace my 100% block aegis virtue of courage with an inferior position dependent version of it?
To block more than just a single attack….duh. Kinda funny, all the guardians panicking over something new they barely have any details on. Although I will say, the name blows.
On the bright side, that new enemy from the video resembles a dinosaur. Also, the leaping/angel-wing virtue looks kinda cool.
Why would I replace my 100% block aegis virtue of courage with an inferior position dependent version of it?
Depends on the situation?
After all, Aegis only blocks one hit while the shield will block all attacks for the duration. Along with the leap, it could be useful for when your team is engaging an enemy.
Purely theoretical though until we see things like cool downs and durations.
Time is a river.

Even though “Dragon Knight” sounds cooler, I bet they couldn’t choose that name because everyone would accuse them of ripping off Final Fantasy.
people need to stop judging everything by damage numbers and see the potential of stuff they getting this new specialization is awesome
well the Dragonhunter name is the only thing i find Meh
People are acting like they are -FORCED- to change from Guardian > Dragonhunter and it is driving me insane already…ugh.
Maybe I should take a break from the forums lol.
Also,I’m sure a lot of people here don’t even main Guardian and are complaining just to jump in the bandwagon, and I’m 100% sure they will forget about it next week when the next specialization is revealed, and then they will start to complain about the next one…and so on.
No, I main a Guardian and was very much looking forward to finally having a ranged weapon option and now I’m looking for a new main after almost 3 years.
It’s basically because they see the Chronomancer and feel the Mesmer is getting shinier toys than they are. You see this phenomenon in kids all the time really, it’s pretty common.
They should’ve just made a spec that uses Lances and Spears instead, not a Bow.

So you mained a class, looked forward to a ranged option, got it along with a healthy dose of mobility, and because it wasnt all you expected it to be you’re looking to reroll (from a class that you could easily still play with additional buffs outright ignoring the specialization, mind you) without even seeing raw numbers?
Less hyperbole please.

No, I saw the skills on the ranged “weapon” and noticed none of it is related to combat and it is entirely support making it the guardian staff of ranged weapons aka useless.
I have a feeling if they had a different name than “Dragon Hunter” then there would have been less disappointment in the reveal.
They should’ve just made a spec that uses Lances and Spears instead, not a Bow.
They wanted to give the Guardians, sorry, Dragonhunters, ranged weapon options. Bow was there, land versions of spears / lances were not. This was easier. Simple really.
Lol……Dragonhunters. Forget Guardians, I’m now calling every Guardian I see Dragonhunter. ;P
I read “traps” and that’s when my head hit my keyboard until the keys fell off. Honestly, someone on the dev team needs to play this game!

This is definitely the least interesting specialization released so far. Kind of sucks, I had high hopes for the Guardian. I’m just hoping the thief isn’t as big of a let down.
This is literally the second specialization they have revealed so far (outside the name tempest). It was either going to be “this is the best specialization they released so far” or “this is the worst specialization so far”. We don’t even know how it works yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it. But seriously, did you consider sounding less extreme and simply typing “this to me seems worse than the mesmer specialization”?
I too hope that the thief specialization is awesome. But I can see how people would be a little let down (with the information so far) when the chronomancer sounded like the coolest thing ever. I think a lot of people drooled over that one. I bet the guardian “traps” will be cool, and I’m looking forward to tomorrows reveal.
I read “traps” and that’s when I jumped to the conclusion that Dragonhunters will suck and the world is coming to an end. No, I don’t want to know the details of these traps, that information is irrelevant. A trap is a trap and can’t in any way be cool. Dragonhunter doomed. >.<
Whoah there buddy, it’s going to be ok. ;P

Exactly. I think the issue here is the Chronomancer presentation simply out-shined the Dragonhunter presentation. Well that and Dragonhunter is such a silly name. I’m sure Dragonhunter will be fine, of course they’ll all be inferior to the totally awesome Engineer Specialization!
Like 5 months ago you didn’t even expected you could “advance” (not really advance, just another having a choice) to another class, and now you will stop playing that said class because the specialization isn’t what you wanted?
Like…wow.
@Edit
I mean, the specialization NAME . Even worse than not wanting the spec because it “sucks” or “isnt the king of DPS” or “dont fit the game” is not wanting it simply because of the name.
This is the kind of event where you can see who really mains Guardian.
The ones who really love guardians will keep playing guardians, the ones who like guardians and also try new things will get Dragonhunter and keep the Guardian.
The ones who were in just for the lootstick are jumping out of the bandwagon right now.
I mean, protecting someone by jumping in front of then with your wings and then raising a magical shield to protect them…Can this get more Guardian-y? I don’t think so.
Bring on the Dragonhunter!

Traps don’t work at all in current PvE meta and they are weak in PvP. I’m not concerned with “cool”, just useful. Maybe the trait line will have some redeeming value.

No, I will stop playing it because it is insulting. 6 months ago I wouldn’t have expected a ranged option on a Guardian, tho I did want one. Then they teased us with the art with a bow on it, and then they showed us… a useless support bow.

As I mentioned before, those skills could easily be applied to cancelling projectile barrages. coupled with the leap virtue, Guardian now has a gap closer for ranged harassment, instead of relying on blocks/aegis.
Just because they don’t have direct damage doesnt mean they cant get you in your opponents face/cripple their dps.

I could get into my opponents face with my sword the entire time. Guardians have never had trouble closing gaps. That is not a thing that exists. We needed the ability to fight back from range to begin with. Plus that shield isn’t going to stop “barrage” barrage isn’t a projectile it is ground targeted AoE.
I bet if the guardian’s bow looked and acted more like Greatbows from Dark Souls less people would be complaining.

This Forum has been rated “G” kids.
One more proof that the devs don’t play guardians and don’t care about guardians.
Chronomancer is great, because it gives a lot of benefits while making you carefully consider whether to take 3 trait lines or chrono+2 trait lines (and I can see some current builds that wouldn’t benefit as much from chrono as much as a third trait line).
Granted we don’t know the full spec, but with this, very little seems like something that you can justify losing a trait line for. Much of it will probably come down to whether or not Longbow has enough soft CC to deal with kiting; and whether the projectiles are fast enough and damaging enough to take over scepter’s role.
