Is abysmal. So here I am, thinking it won’t be that hard to gather some lower tier mats (2-4) to prepare for crafting, right? boy was I wrong. First off, you have to go to a certain mob to get items you want, then you have to mindlessly just try to kill these low level creatures in hopes of getting those certain crafting materials.

Well half the time there is no drop what-so-ever and the other half it ends up being useless salvage material/whites/greys.

This 100+% magic find doesn’t seem to do anything either.

Why??? The only way to reasonably gather these mats is to level alts, while you’re doing map completion, you’ll end up getting various low amounts of these mats – once.

Then it just ends up being that mind numbing grind of orr, cof or fractals to get money to exhange for the mats. My god how unrewarding this game is toward those who rather just get stuff themselves. There’s also 0 reasons to go back to any lower level areas, just because what you don’t wanna see is kill enemies that end up not dropping anything except useless extra xp because everybody knows it’s pointless to kill anything there.

And hell, this really is a general point of why don’t enemies even drop loot most of the time??? It’s basically telling us to not kill anything at all or you’re just wasting time. And of course lest we forget, magic find doesn’t seem to do much of anything.

The drop rates in this game is designed to push people towards the Trading Post and the Gem shop.

Yes, the drop rates are very low, lower than many old-school MMOs – but it is how ANet have designed the game, so basically – we’ll have to deal with it.

The trick is to fill a bowl with m&ms and every time you kill a mob you eat one. Or put a bunch of different treats in little bags and grab a bag when you kill something, Ooo I got a good treat that time. Anet isn’t going to reward you, you have to do it yourself.

The reason why this is not an issue with you is because the RNG in this game needs to be tweaked. A good portion of members have issues with bad RNG, while others are incredibly lucky. I think there is something wrong with the coding of the RNG that causes this to happen, but I am sure there are more theories then this.

I’ve had bad drops since that patch that made veterans and champions drop something 100% of the times. I got really annoyed yesterday when I did 5-6 events in orr for the daily. Tens of mobs killed if not more and ended up with some bags, 10-15 of those grey skulls and 5-6 blues and 3-4 greens. Had veterans and champions drop absolutely nothing. Have in mind that I walk around with ~130% MF. Before that sure-loot patch I used to get 1-3 raress from a single event and at least a blue from veterans and champions. Back in those days I was mainly farming those 2 camp protect events in orr. Im pretty sure they did something because people were getting to much gold from farming in the open world.

Yes drop rates are very low in GW 2…

Drop rates are very low in ANY game released in 2012 that had some kind of CASH SHOP where you can buy gold with real money…

The lesson for the future 2013 onwards if a game has a cash shop in any form at all, drop rates are going to be abysmal…

Thats the way the games industry at the top end seems to be going…

There is very, very clearly a correlation between cash shops—→in game drops…

On the other side of the argument, however, having a cash shop to bring in additional revenue means more content and a bigger, growing game…

You pays your money, you takes your choice…

I don’t know. I tend to kill things that drop bags, because the bags usually have the mats I need. I seldom go for mats themselves. I find that ineffective farming.

In the course of just leveling I pretty much get what I need. I’m occasionally a hair short, but I’ve never farmed for mats once, before I started going for my legendary. And that’s a whole different ball of wax.

Nov 15 – the day loot got ruined

Jan 28 – the day loot got ruineder

Feb 26 – the day loot gets ruinederer?

I dread each new patch because the game gets tighter and tighter. 6 dungeons in a row, no rares. 2 fractal runs in a row, 1 proper rare and 1 exotic useless sigil (that shouldn’t count as an exotic. maybe if they were forgeable/salvageable…).

Salvage rates dropped in nov. Forge rates have been terrible for me recently. Personal experience means more to me than any PR statement, and we’ve seen how statements have been blatant lies (vet guaranteed drops).

I’m running out of things worth doing in the game, it’s like I’m being boxed out of every aspect. Does Anet want me to stop playing??

Well…i tried to play with full MF set + MF buffs one week and you know what…nothing, same trash loot as without any MF bonuses. Fractal or any other dungeon doesn’t loot nothing “spectacular” . Two days ago i have back to my normal set and you know what?
Got 9 rares and 1 exotic ( from normal trash mob’s in Fractal ).

So MF do nothing, drops are pretty and totally random…only matter of players luck.

The relationship between low drop rate/everything-cost-money and Cash Shop is obvious. Nevertheless there IS a problem with the drop system.

Wooden Chest that gives white item/junk which goes against Anet own patch note. Veteran/champion that drop piece of junk (when they drop something). etc…. And for what I read, MF that does nothing anymore….

So even with the Cash Shop thing…the drop system is bugged actually and should be corrected….IMO

My first character that I mapped with made about 50g just from mapping and drops, however this one made a little over 15. Usually at the end of the day, all I have is junk (grey) and whatever it is I gathered. I don’t even bother with champions anymore as they still drop nothing for me. They should boost drop rates and reward people who actually play/farm a lot or just play casually. I have a friend who just started playing and he already bought tons of gold from the cash shop to buy full exotic set because he’s a lazy type of player and can’t be bothered otherwise.

I’m not sure how much is pure luck or if MF affects anything. Sometimes I get no rares, sometimes I get lots, with MF gear. It’s random at times. They should just remove MF and boost overall drop rates. I hate when I kill lots of mobs at the same time and don’t get anything. Not even junk items, but empty loot. Doesn’t feel rewarding to me..

This game is made so you cant get anything by yourself, all you have to do is farm gold mindlessly or buy gems and then go to the trading post and get the stuff you need. Trying to get something in particular will only make you waste your time, just be happy with the unexpected/unneeded drops while you farm gold which gives you more gold.

Sometimes the drop rates of ‘items’ are fine it’s just the quality of items is poor if we are talking about gear. In terms of mats, poor drop rates make crafting underwhelming as a game system. For crafting to work you need resource nodes and predictability in terms of other required mats acquisition and I haven’t experienced it in-game. I hope crafting is reconsidered as a game system at some point and made viable as it traditionally exists in other games. Overall, the game is not rewarding, beyond the awesome gameplay of course, in my experience.

This has been my experience as well. I’ve run for ~300 hours on just my warrior and have farmed Lvl 80 dungeons in EXP mode and FOTM all the time and I’ve never once found an item worth more than 50 silver. I get that it’s random and that it’s all about farming and patience and I don’t expect an exotic or even rare every run, but quite frankly the absence of finding a single item worth even 1 gold ever in 300 hours is pretty mind boggling and very frustrating.

My conspiracy theory? A lot has happened in the past few years of the games development. They were well into the game design, then had to change engines. They rushed release to beat MOP, Rift xpac and Christmas. The original devs no longer work GW2 now. NCSoft is pushing the agenda now.

Loot drops/DR, things such as the change in account bound dye is in place on purpose to push us to the TP/Gem Store. Anet is getting all they can out of Gem Store purchases before the next two big AAA MMO’s are released. GW2 has made some monumental evolutions with the MMO game, but if the upcoming two new AAA MMOs can take those points and incorporate them without all of the negative aspects and greed…..well, I think you really will see a mass exodus of Tyria.

Yesterday I killed 6 vets and a champion and didn’t get a single drop, while doing considerable damage on the champ and all the damage on the vets. I looted one dropped wooden chest that only had a couple of whites. Why is RNG so out of whack? Why are Vets and Champs still not dropping loot even after they were patched to do so? The monster has gotten away from Dr Frankenstein and now he’s chasing it around the countryside in the dark trying to catch it.

I have bad days and I have good days. However I have more bad days than good when it comes to drops. So much so that I very rarely even go to zones anymore. I spend most of my time in dungeons now. Drop rates are worse than crap. The only reason I even run dungeons is for the tokens, so I can get guaranteed loot. Then I just turn around and salvage or mystic forge the items so I can perhaps get a little money.

I do not understand how some people can claim to make 5g an hour doing… anything in this game. On a profitable day of playing 8 freaking hours I make anywhere between 8-14g. That is doing all paths of AC, TA and CoF, as well as fractal daily quests for the first three tiers.

take that one step further:

take lots of M&M’s, separate colors to represent drop rates for items (blue, green, yellow, red, etc). when you get say, 4 blue drops, eat 4 blue M&M’s from the pile. at the end of a gaming session, log how many of each were either eaten or left, and report drop rate data to appropriate thread.

you now have a constant snack flow of M&M’s, and you collect data for science!
