Hey everyone! Myself and Seras put together a video talking about how far Guild Wars 2 has come over this past year. We wanted to put this video together to shed light on how much GW2 has actually improved this year, and the solid foundation ArenaNet has given it. We also talk about the problems that were in the game’s early life cycle, and how ArenaNet addressed them. Thanks for your time!

I also want to close with a congratulations to ArenaNet for all of the fun they provided us over this past year. Many recent MMO’s have struggled keeping a playerbase for even that long.

So, through rose-colored glasses eh? Nothing about empty zones, lack of dungeon attention etc?

And GW is losing a lot of its playerbase as well, my friend.. Get out of PvE from time to time.. ;-)

Let’s ignore the after effects of the current Living Story, or even the dungeon reward revamp as well as future dungeon plans for a complete re-work.

But yeah, rose-colored glasses if that suits you

Except that we have been told, several times recently, that they are seeing an upswing in the player base.

And they are getting ready to release in China, which will further boost their playerbase.

Through smoke color glasses huh? Nothing about the end of culling, new content every two weeks, the introduction of the wallet, the imminent end to magic find gear.

Just because you personally don’t like something, doesn’t mean someone who does is looking at it through rose-colored glasses.

Maybe it’s just not to your taste…which is fine. But you should stop trying to dimiss people who like it…because it’s just wrong.

This game ain’t perfect and there are areas of concern and I will point it out when prompted.

But until then I just pick on the trolls.

Let’s ignore the after effects of the current Living Story, or even the dungeon reward revamp as well as future dungeon plans for a complete re-work.

But yeah, rose-colored glasses if that suits you

Dungeon reward revamp 1.5g for AC, 3g/1.5g for Arah and 1g for every other dungeon path, I would hardly call a revamp. But more of a lazy ‘crap we’ve, got to throw them a bone fast’ bandage fix. Not to mention the nerf to dungeon tokens which was completely unnecessary.

Oh, them ‘plans’ for future dungeon rework… Yeah, how are they coming along… Oh right, they’re taking their sweet time on that one. But don’t worry, every 2-3 months they come on the dungeon sub forum, just to assure us that they’re ‘working on things’. Sure sounds reassuring.

Through smoke color glasses huh? Nothing about the end of culling, new content every two weeks, the introduction of the wallet, the imminent end to magic find gear.

End of culling, what a joke. Yeah, they ended the culling of other players, woopdi-flipping-doo. What they forgot however was the slightly more important problem where monsters were being culled. But hey, at least I can see this moron standing next to me waving his Twilight around. That champion over there that wants to eat my face? Nah, he ain’t important.

Ya know what, I’ve posted that I’m not happy in regards to several of those things as well….and have posted my thoughts, feelings, and criticism in many a thread. However, I accept the fact that I am not the one making the game. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean that others don’t. Some very much do, and are excited about it.

I don’t go around crying gloom and doom though. “Oh the game’s dying” “Oh they are losing their playerbase” Yes, they have lost some players, possibly even a decent chunk. They went through a slump after the initial launch, this is common for all MMOs. However, they have actual numbers. They have told us that yes they lost players, yes they went through the slump, and now things are picking up. Not only that, they are getting ready to launch in China, which could (potentially) double their player base. If things were as bad kitten many are screaming, we’d be seeing a lot more action from Anets side, from NCSoft. That’s simple, basic business management.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I bet you that even if they did take their time to do the revamp, I would still complain how shoddy they did everything, because knowing Anet’s history, I’m pretty sure more than half of everything is going to be broken anyway.

Also, I’m not fickle at all. I’ve been posting for months about Risk vs Reward revamps and even posting suggestions about them. Not to mention, I even proposed a better list for the gold rewards that actually makes sense.

In fact, I actually like the AC revamp and think they did a pretty good job on that one. Although that might also mostly be because it makes bad players cry so much, whilst actually being easier than it was before.

Re culling. They fixed culling for both mobs and for players. It’s your own fault if you don’t know how to change your graphical settings.

I guess it’s also my own fault I can’t afford a big gaming rig and have to play on a 3 year old laptop with the worst graphical setting imaginable that needs a fan on it just so my graphical card won’t melt?

I need to play on lowest setting of everything just to be able to break 10 FPS. So no, it’s not because I don’t know how to change my graphical setting.

But hey, keep the assumptions coming, whatever makes you feel superior I guess.

That’s quite wrong. I have been posting on the forums since launch and most of my posts were game-improvement suggestions. Sadly arenanet doesn’t care what the players ask for, they just give us worthless crap and we’re supposed to be thankful for them working on that instead of stuff that actually would make the game better. That’s why there are so many negative comments on the forums nowadays and I can’t say I dissaprove. The way GW2 is developing, it is going to become WoW2 instead.
Even if the playerbase grows, who says any of them aren’t brainless idiots?
The point being, most of the dedicated people who like to play a game and have a good attitude will just give up on it, and the playerbase will be a bunch of zombies, basically a dead game.

Lol, not the type of action I was referring to.

We knew living story was coming at launch. We knew at it’s onset that they wanted to do it at rapid intervals (personally I liked the 3 week set up). People originally complained that F&F was too slow, they told us they were working out bugs / logistics / whatever and future releases would come more often. Then, Colin in a twitch stream, stated that based on their numbers and statistics (they saw a decline in interest and in people playing the content in week 3), they were going to the 2 week updates. To support this, they hired more people and scaled up their LS teams to 4 separate teams, giving each team a longer development cycle.

These are not the actions of a failing venture. You don’t hire people. You reduce salaries, snip over time, and lay people off.

It was too slow for what it actually brought into the game. Seriously… a couple of NPC’s, a new instance, a karma box? Did they work 1 month on THAT? Same goes for Living story at this moment, the content is total rubbish (bad story, bad rewards, grind/farm…) and they spend waaaaay too much time on it.

Sooo then what’s the problem? You have the same situation now as before pre-culling.

If you can’t play this game properly on a low-end computer then that’s your fault and not anet’s. There are options in game to adjust for this such as character details, LOD and textures.

ANet (NCSoft) noticed very quickly that PvE kitties are gembags: Keep them happy, and they’ll gladly invest in the gemstore and keep the game up and running..

*It was never mentioned that NCSoft is a failing venture.. However, it is a venture that is failing its playerbase.. *

The percentage of people who never PvE (pure WvW players) are blatantly ignored, since they have no effect on the cash flow at NCSoft..

Please stop with these bold generalizations using fantasy numbers pulled out of thin air! Where is the proof? Where are the sources! I may be at work, although I would NEVER admit that out in the open and publicly – but I am definitely not toiling! That sounds just negative. I am positively patrolling the neighborhood, spreading my knowledge and wisdom, accrued by years of practice, patiently reading the same things over and over again while phrasing the same things eloquently repeatedly myself (but so that no one notices).

So it’s probably like a lot more likely to be like 34%.

People originally complained that F&F was too slow

It was too slow for what it actually brought into the game. Seriously… a couple of NPC’s, a new instance, a karma box? Did they work 1 month on THAT? Same goes for Living story at this moment, the content is total rubbish (bad story, bad rewards, grind/farm…) and they spend waaaaay too much time on it.

I won’t disagree that F&F was super slow. A month for its initial phase, which took me all of an hour to do if I was lucky? However, I also took it with a grain of salt, since when they started releasing it, we were told they were still working things out and that it would take time to get all the kinks worked out. They were trying something new. I argued for having patience, not that it was good. Although, I did like the dungeon.

As for the current LS, you and I disagree is all. I like the current content. I find Scarlet to be humorous, and I enjoy hopping into the invasions a couple of times a day as a change of pace. It is a distraction from the typical leveling, dungeon runs, etc.

Keep in mind that development takes time. Its more than just code work. You have art, and voice, and testing. There is a lot to it. So while sure, they may have spent a month on that tiny piece, it may have been necessary to get everything integrated. We can’t honestly know, we don’t work there.

Any business worth their salt knows how lucrative (or not) their selected target audience is. I’m almost positive they were well aware of how profitable pve would be long before launch. For crying out loud they hired a monetizer solely for the purpose of milking the most out of it. That was pretty much a dead give away. But they are a business, and businesses are in business to make money. It’s what they do.

Yes, some of the player base feels let down. Again, I never argued against that, in fact I stated as such in another thread. I also argued that we let Anet down by being the narcissistic, entitled brats that we are. (Disclaimer: ‘we’ is a general use term, I am not calling out anyone specifically). There is hurt on both sides here.

I wouldn’t say WvW gets no love. They have their own team after all. We don’t know how big it is. We don’t know what all they are working on, but they have tried to spice things up a bit. Ok, you don’t like the mastery lines, but some people do. The maps haven’t ‘changed’ yet, but its only been a year! You have to give them time to come up with something interesting, get it approved, and then code and integrate it. It will take time. As I stated before, we don’t know what all they are working on. Have some patience, take a break, hell…read a book. It’ll all be there when you come back.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Focus! More focus! And Popcorn! All out here!

(…)
And the other 35% of people are those who enjoy the game and are toiling away here while at work (me).
(…)

Please stop with these bold generalizations using fantasy numbers pulled out of thin air! Where is the proof? Where are the sources! I may be at work, although I would NEVER admit that out in the open and publicly – but I am definitely not toiling! That sounds just negative. I am positively patrolling the neighborhood, spreading my knowledge and wisdom, accrued by years of practice, patiently reading the same things over and over again while phrasing the same things eloquently repeatedly myself (but so that no one notices).

So it’s probably like a lot more likely to be like 34%.

Disclaimer: This … satire … if you so will, was not directed at anyone particularly.

I really wish enjoying this game wasn’t met with people telling me I shouldn’t enjoy it, or trying to push labels on me.

I enjoy this game, or roughly 66% of it.

I don’t do Fractals all that much I don’t do sPvP at all, I do dungeons only with guild groups, and I barely commit to WvW. I only just now today bothered getting my second piece of Ascended gear, and it was because I wanted a quiver and finally had most of the parts for it.

I enjoy hopping on and doing the Invasions, primarily because I am often testing out stuff rather than going for “teh lewtz”.

I enjoy the Living Story because, hey, it may not be amazingly groundbreaking with the story but it’s at least not a daily routine of “same old thing, different day”.

I enjoy playing this game because I don’t need to “cash” to be useful, I just need to TRY and learn how to play my class. And maybe adjust my style somewhat now and then. (I need to remember to try running TeamSpeak/Mumble on this rig and see if it causes massive crashes again.)

I enjoy hunting for those things which are kind of neat to me and make the discovery worth the time put into looking for them.

Most of all, I enjoy the days . . . few as they are . . . when I can spend time with my guildmates. I enjoy not feeling like I NEED to be in every day or else (on the other hand, I do enjoy feeling that I accomplished something when I logged in, rather than just spinning my wheels farming or poking stuff for nothing).

Total summation of your posts…I don’t like the game so it must suck. Shrugs.

I know not everyone likes it, but it’s obvious to me many people do. Why does that bother you so?

Total summation of your posts: I’m not going to read anything this person said and just pretend I’m still right.

You didn’t even address my points. I’m not saying everything in the game is bad, I’m just saying there are still blatant flaws in it. Something you seem to have a pretty big problem admitting.

Either address my points saying why they’re wrong, or don’t bother replying. I never said I don’t like the game. I said the dungeon revamp was lazy and the ‘end of culling’ completely missed the biggest problem: the culling of enemies.

Where exactly did I say ‘I don’t like the game’.

Pointing out flaws doesn’t mean I don’t like something as a whole. I like the South Park series, that doesn’t mean they don’t have bad episodes.

Sooo then what’s the problem? You have the same situation now as before pre-culling.

If you can’t play this game properly on a low-end computer then that’s your fault and not anet’s. There are options in game to adjust for this such as character details, LOD and textures.

The problem is that they advertised to ‘put an end to culling in PvE’, but forgot to put an end to culling of monsters. So what I get now is that I can see every player in LA, which I never even wanted, but I still can’t see the gravelings in AC when doing the scepter event for example.

It’s indeed my fault that my computer is trash, and that’s not something Anet can help. But they can help the fact that they missed the problem with culling by a long shot. How is me complaining about a blatant design flaw so bad?

I don’t even see why anyone cared about the culling of players to begin with. I always thought the problems were with mobs. Who cares about Johnny Casual over there with his ugly armor, while there’s monsters around trying to murder you that you can’t see.

I really don’t understand why you can’t grasp the fact that this is a serious issue and that the ‘removal of culling in PvE’ was a completely pointless update without the removal of culled enemies.

And GW is losing a lot of its playerbase as well, my friend.. Get out of PvE from time to time.. ;-)

Except that we have been told, several times recently, that they are seeing an upswing in the player base.

And they are getting ready to release in China, which will further boost their playerbase.

rolls eyes

Lets cry gloom and doom some more because we aren’t happy.

Yes we may have an upswing now, but when this Ascended stuff gets added that upswing may very well change direction, its happened once it’ll happen again..

I think anyone who predicted the Ascended stuff being a pain has already either quit, made peace with it, or otherwise isn’t a factor in leaving. I really don’t see multiple people who hung around after last November going “I’m gone the instant they announce Ascended armor, even though they practically said it’s coming eventually.”

It’s possible that lots of people are in denial about the consequences of having heavily time-gated Ascended Gear, but will leave the game once these consequences come to pass (assuming they do, of course).

Lol. In my opinion there shouldn’t even be a distinction between end-game and pre-end-game. Dynamic events are part of pre-end-game but they could actually be a great end-game part, if they enhanced them so they really did affect the world. More about this:

I don’t enjoy endgame, therefor, they shouldn’t put it in the game, because this game is just for me.

You’re quite close. Let’s look at this closer.

I don’t enjoy end game. Other people besides me ALSO don’t enjoy end game. We don’t know how big a percentage that is, but clearly other people do feel the same way. There are whole lot of MMOs out there already focused on end game. There are relatively few MMOs (none of the ones I’ve tried) that don’t focus around end game.

Some posters feel ALL the MMOs should be for them. Some of us feel it’s about time that at least one AAA title was for us.

I don’t really see that as unreasonable. It’s far more unreasonable to say that all MMOs should be the same.

So you accuse us of feeling that an MMO should be made just for us, while at the same time expecting the exact same thing from this one? I’m sorry, but you’re being quite the hypocrite.

Not to mention, it wouldn’t hurt your gaming experience in the slightest if they added elite end-game content for the people who enjoy it, seeing how they won’t make a gear treadmill out of it anyway, and the rewards would be purely cosmetics.
