Expansion or end of franchise?
Not all of us are comfortable renting WoW or have ever played WoW in the first place so yes, it is completely arguable. Many of us are happy with GW2, sure there are issues but all games have issues, this is nothing new to us. All you WoW players who keep complaining every time some other MMO comes out with an expansion should probably just go back to WoW and be happy until you’re bored out of your mind and come back to GW2 until you’re unhappy again and go back to WoW. This is the MMO treadmill, get used to it.
Most popular MMO is down to 6.8 million players according to the quarterly report this week. But if you’re charging a monthly subscription, you need to release expansions to bring players back as well as keep the existing players interested.
You obviously one of the LS is not content players which is fine but that’s what ANet has decided to do to keep players coming back week after week. So unless revenue dropped significantly from last year, NCSOFT should have it’s quarterly report in the next week, week and a half and that may show motivation for an expansion.
Even if they announce an expansion, I wouldn’t expect to see it for another year.
RIP City of Heroes
Why do people make statements like this? There’s not only no evidence for this, but you know, there are probably as many people who hate WoW as who like it. There are entire sites dedicated to people who hate WoW.
At it’s height WoW had 12.4 million subscribers. That’s not a lot of people when you consider how many gamers there are total. I wouldn’t give a plugged nickle for the new WoW expansion, even if it were free and there was no monthly charge.
Now that doesn’t mean Anet will or won’t announce an expansion, but I think there are plenty of people playing this game who don’t like WoW at all, and probably wouldn’t play it under any circumstance.
I hope they try WoW again , and focus their energy on the forums ’’preventing’’ WoW from not having content for 12-18 months like in the end of Cataclysm and Pandaria :P
WoW 2.0 is already out and has “killed” GW2 .. so who cares about WoW 1.6 .. lol

I wrote a large reaction on this, but then I realized it’s not even worth it. This is just searching for arguments to back up the need of an expansion.

If this games keeps the players who hate wow the playerbase will be so small better hope for expansion or games dead end of story.
I for one can’t wait for the WoW expansion, not to play it of course, I won’t go back to WoW ever. I detest it so much now I deleted every single one of my Lvl 90 Characters & gave away everything I had.
I’m hoping all the people that want to turn GW2 into WoW will leave & let those of us who love GW2 play in peace.
As a devoted GW2 player going on her 2nd year now, I can only tell you that WoW will never be what this wonderful game is. For me. I’ve played WoW for many, many years before, and what I found in GW2 is why I’ll never go back, no matter how many expansions they push out. I personally love the Living World story, and Anet has done more things right than they have wrong.
So please, do not force your opinion on us, like I won’t force mine upon you. Many will stay, many will go, as is the lifespan of a game. But don’t take it for granted that we all feel the same way as you do. Or anyone else, for that matter. I trust Anet to do what they feel is right, and I’ll go along with it.

Is it that time of the month again?
GW2 doesn’t need to do anything just because there’s a WoW expansion coming out. Just like they didn’t do anything in response to Wildstar or ESO or EQ Next or Neverwinter Online or Rift going free to play or Pandaria or whatever else. (And before anyone says that’s because all of those games suck and no one plays them that’s after they were released. Before they were released they were the Next Big Thing in MMOs which was going to cost GW2, and presumably every other game, their entire fan base unless they did something big to counter it.)
This topic comes up every single time there’s another game or an expansion to a popular game coming out and it always goes the same way. Someone insists GW2 are doomed unless Anet rush out a big release of their own and/or copy everything the new game is being marketed on. People debate whether that’s true or not. The game comes out and for a week or two topics crop up from people who feel the need to inform us all that they’re now playing that game more than GW2.
Then a couple of weeks later everything goes back to ‘normal’. Some people probably did switch to that game, but new people have come to play GW2 in their place, some people came back to GW2 because the new game sucked and was obviously going to suck all along, most people don’t care either way.
Then something else is announced and the cycle starts all over again.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”

Proof? Of course not.
More people hate WoW than like it. WoW hate is so prevalent it’s not funny. If you can’t see it, you haven’t been looking.
And it’s not JUST WoW. It’s the amount of games that copied WoW and haven’t found the same success. There’s a reason WoW lost six million subscribers since its heyday.
There’s also people like me who never played WoW in the first place.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
My highest character in WoW is lvl 13 or 14 btw ..

It is far to early to announce an expansion now. The game is only three months out in China. To announce an expansion roughly one year in advance is not clever.
Only NCsoft could force Arananet to rush out an expansion supposed that the predicted horribly low sales and revenue for Wildstar and missed expectations for GW2 China become true.
The new WoW expansion will take a large chunk of the GWII playerbase??
Have you even read anything about the expansion? It’s the most sorry excuse for an expansion in the history of that game.
Every single new feature that Blizzard announced for the expansion has either been removed or been nerfed to the point where it is completely useless.
The ONLY thing they announced for Warlords of Draenor that still remains to this day is the new character models – and I’d say it is a pretty lame expansion if slightly upgraded graphics is the biggest selling point.

Every time a new game or expansion comes out, someone (is it you?) says the same thing: ArenaNet! Make an expansion or the game will die!!
Funny, Guild Wars 2 doesn’t yet seem dead. I wonder how that can be!

Weren’t you here 2 years ago predicting how WoW’s MoP expac was going to kill GW2?
So far GW2 was killed be MoP, TESO and Wildstar at least, and it will be killed by
Cows in Bikinis, Archeage and Black Desert also ..
Very much like all other MMOs have already been killed by Vanguard, Age of Conan,
Warhammer Online, AION, SWTOR, RIFT .. and whatever else ^^

Why do people make statements like this?
It’s called black and white / dichotomous thinking or splitting. I haven’t found too many really useful discussions on the subject (mostly you’d find it come up in relation to depression and bi-polar), but for the most part it is characterised by only thinking of things at the extremes (no gray areas). It also goes hand in hand with a over simplification of things (thus allowing for it to be thought of in the extremes).
In such a way of thinking a statement such as: GW1 an expansion or it will fail, would comfortable fit in.
WoW 2.0 is already out and has “killed” GW2 .. so who cares about WoW 1.6 .. lol
Wait I’m confused? Wasn’t WoW 2.0 Buring Crusade? And what was 1.6… Blackwings Lair right? http://www.wowwiki.com/Patch_1.6.0
I don’t really see why anyone would be interested in WoW 2.0 anymore.
Unless you tried using the numbers in some sort of a ‘witty’ fashion, in which case I have no idea what you mean.

Problem is WoW has a very bad habit of having long content droughts. At release it probably has enough content to satisfy a casual player maybe a month or two? Oh they get some life out of the old gal by releasing new raid content, but that too has a release schedule that can’t satify the hardcore crowd for long.
What I’m saying is with GW2 being a b2p those players will probably just return after they’ve chewed through all the content.
Don’t diss the moo-moos. They’re hawt.
Not as hawt as some of those charr ladies :P

WoW 2.0 → Wildstar .. WoW in Space
1.6 or 1.7 .. whatever was just a generic number because its maybe expansion 6 or 7
of WoW 1.0 (original not Wildstar, but older .. thus 1.0)

Every time WoW loses another million subs, some WoW kid goes into full on panic mode and posts here.
Truth is all the expacs in the world can’t save WoW from it’s inevitable slide into obscurity.
gw2 players don’t want to play wow, or they’d be playing wow :p
I can’t understand why Anet hasn’t released an expansion for GW2. If I were an investor in NCsoft I’d be angry and probably pull my money out because it’s not even ineptitude, it looks like neglect. No good company passes on new revenue and returning customers do they? Then again I haven’t seen the earnings report, maybe they’re making good money with the suckers who think they “support” the game by buying gems and black lion keys. All the seem to be doing is delaying an expansion…if I can make money by creating a few skins and sticking them behind RNG chests, why not?
How silly.
Just because the OP’s life revolves around 2 games, either WoW or GW2, doesn’t mean that is the same for everyone.
I do agree with the the opening premise—expansion or its’ over. I also agree that the LS does not ‘cut it’. Drop in every 2 weeks for the unlock and do the story only. I personally don’t like drytop ect—-many many others do( I am glad that you do).
I no longer buy gems ( I used to get the 2000 gem cards on a regular basis to support the game).
That being said WoW will never even be considered as an alternate game to play(or any other sub based game.)
Falls is coming/then XMAS—there will be many many many others ways and games to attract my interest and more importantly my $$. So far Anet hasn’t done anything for me to even consider supporting them with cash again.

So far GW2 was killed be MoP, TESO and Wildstar at least, and it will be killed by
Cows in Bikinis, Archeage and Black Desert
MoP didn’t live up to the hype, nor expectations. TESO also didn’t live up to the hype and became somewhat irrelevant, despite having a solid name behind it. Wildstar whilst doing well, failed to kill GW2.
In short, them games you mentioned have failed “to kill GW2”. If anything, they have been killed by their own hype. As for Archeage and Black Desert, people like you throw them around, as if they are some sort of kryptonite to GW2. Whether they live up to expectation and hype is another matter. Don’t be surprised if they are killed by their own hype though.
Honestly, I agree with the OP on this one. I am a loyal fan and supporter of GW2, and plan to stay that way for a while but I can’t deny the fact that even I have grown frustrated with the lack of content and the dwindling community. Guild Wars 2 has so much potential but for some reason most of the new content just feels… empty. Any game this age should have had a decent amount of content released by now, even free to play games. I worry that if they do not announce an expansion soon the reason for that will be they have already moved focus else ware.
GW2 needs something big, regardless of other games and their expansions. It’s time.
Games with gear treadmill endgames NEED expacs, they wither and die without them.
GW2 doesn’t have that problem. Since they give us new content every 2 weeks – new zones, new dungeons, new stories, new maps, new features, it keeps us playing.
WoW 2.0 is already out and has “killed” GW2 .. so who cares about WoW 1.6 .. lol

I need to get out more (in a non-literal sense) haven’t been perusing the MMO sites like I use to. Thanks for clarifying that. Most of the reviews of wildstar I’ve heard (I’m not really into sub-games) have been a bit mixed so I didn’t really ever perceive it as being a GW2 killer.
well …
That is true. an extension would be good. I started to need to see something new, for me, the current maps are becoming ugly.
No asser novelty. No visible changes in actual villages or expention habitat of peoples. Nothing interesting natural level exploration (without crystals jump, or propulsion). No hidden secrets new, has the tomb raider …
My desire to explore being my biggest motivation, I’m a bit stalled.
Really, an extension would be beneficial.
it would:
- Dungeons
- Armors
- maps
- puzzles
- Stories
- News faces / hairstyles / ears / horns / beards / customizations (without having to pay a fortune)
- A race too?
- A dragon
- Housing can be / guild hall
- exploration
players would be happy.
And frankly, I have no desire to migrate like a bird. On Archeage, Black desert, Wildstar, WoW, etc …
They do not want give me. I prefer Gw2…

Again it does not keep “us playing” (only you and others that like it it), some , including myself, do not keep playing new areas other than to finish the story in a incredibly short time and don’t bother with the ‘new’ area again.
You may not be leaving and you enjoy the new cycle—-others don’t like the way it is evolving.

And as always the question becomes how many others. I feel this way so enough people will leave…that’s what you…and the OP are saying.
But you don’t know the numbers. No one does. Not even Anet. It’s just a guess on your part.
I suspect we’ll have an expansion next year, not this one. When China is a year old or so.

Hello Sheldon .. i know you don’t understand sarcasm .. so sorry i didn’t wrote under my post : yes .. this is sarcasm.
And no .. “people like me” don’t throw them around .. i know they won’t kill anything
since especially those open-pvp games in the west only kill themself because in the
end they turn just into gankfests after some months.

I have never played WoW and I never plan to. Subscription based MMOs are a dying breed and WoW only continues to succeed because it has some seriously loyal people who have now invested many years of their life into that game. To keep their monthly playing customers happy and paying they have to release a new ‘expansion’ everyone once in a while and it’s a ploy to get the old gamers who have let their subscriptions stop to come back to the game.
GW2 has a seriously different way of approaching bringing us new content. We have Living Story. Not only are they not making any of us buy this new content but it is updated on a far regular basis than a WoW expansion is. This isn’t GW1 guys, and they seem to not want to get into the model of forcing us to buy new content. Be kitten happy about that!
I can’t understand why Anet hasn’t released an expansion for GW2. If I were an investor in NCsoft I’d be angry and probably pull my money out because it’s not even ineptitude, it looks like neglect. Since GW2 is only a small part of the company’s total income stream (only 16.3% in 2013), pulling your money out would be silly. You also ignore that only 18% of their income comes from NA/EU. If it wasn’t for GW2, their direct income stream from the west would be minuscule, although some income from the EU may be booked as royalties since they pawned off day to day operations of Aion and Lineage 2 to a 3rd party there.

Well it was in 1stQ of 2014 18.3 of the total profits the NCSoft made. That is a good amount considering Aion and Lineage 1 and 2 are sub games. Who knows what it looks like now that GW2 went live in China, the largest game market in the world.
GW2 is important to NCSoft, if it wasn’t A.net wouldn’t be around.
