Just a quick note—I said the odds of it dropping was closer to .005 than the 1 in a million or so that was tossed out. Those aren’t the exact odds, but if my math is correct, 10 players running the event every day might expect one staff to drop after about 7 months. (And we haven’t been out that long.)

Can you give us a hint if it’s connected to lore or if the Gargoyle has any significant meaning to the event/it? Or would that be asking for too much?

How do you determine if it a splendid chest or great chest or something like that? I did the eye in zho qofa catacombs tonight, and the chest was a big one, but I don’t know how to determine if it is a splendid, or great or glorious chest. Oh, and the chest dropped 3 greens and a blue.

Actually, that sounds pretty good. If my off-the-top-of-my-head math is right, that puts the drop rate at something like .05%, which I’m pretty sure is way higher than, say, the precursor drop rate.

Likely it share drop chance with other exotics in the area, but this one happens to be in a chest that do not get event zerged as often as the rest.

This may be seen as an indirect confirmation that it really is a rather unpopular event. I like.

Jeffery I have a request for the future!

First, I love scavenger hunts and mysteries so I hope more of these are put into the game later.

However, could you guys put in hints and clues around the world for these items so we can have things to find/discover/learn from. With such a low drop rate and not having any clues to go on, we could be doing the wrong event for dozens of months and not be any closer to the weapon.

Lore related clues involving books, codes, hidden messages, and secret passageways would be amazing.

Thanks for your hints you’ve given us so far, though!

So about 0.05%.

Er….with a drop rate that low, I think it should be an Ascended tier weapon minimum to be perfectly frank. That’s extremely rare for just an Exotic tier weapon to be.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?

Ok guys I’m in a guild to run catacombs in straits as many times as we can to get a large sample. We are going to guest 2 of the less populated worlds. I’d like to have the biggest zerg as possible doing this event thus increasing the odds of it dropping and the speed the event is done. Of course we are hoping that it drops from the catacombs but if you want to do other events also you’re welcome to do so, do it for the sake of science.

I did this event tonight also, and was shocked and awed to get two rares from the chest. A pistol and a trident. Shortly thereafter another group attempted it, but the champion risen abomination inside the catacombs was a veritable bowling ball from hell this time around and we were like pins made of tissue paper and sunshine and that was the end of that. He really needs a ‘strike’ sound effect for when he bowls everyone over. Anyway, no one got the staff – or at least no one said so if they did.

Yes, please! I love treasure hunts like this, and I believe more of this type of thing should be included in the future.

The point of these weapons is not to compete with any endgame legendary grind, but to inspire exploration. Sometimes being smiled upon by dumb luck makes one squee; normally I say no to RNG, but when it’s appearance only, so be it.

There are some, for example in a Whispers hide out in lornar’s pass I found a memner who talked about a hidden cave and treasure in the lake. Exploring that lead lead to griffonrook run. I have seen several other clues too. I generally try talking to named npcs they often have info about thier area. Sometimes more. Also look for the runes. They have a direct translation to English. If you have never noticed look atLA fountain base. Several sites have translators. One even has an android app. Was warned of traps by these once

Here’s what I’m taking from Jeffrey’s comments today (btw thanks Jeff!):

He stated: “I’ve seen some posts that have correctly identified the specific event/boss”.

Keyword is “some”…note that he used it instead of “many”. (Refer to graph below)

I think we can safely remove the bigger guesses such as Zho’qafa Catacombs and Shadow Behemoth, and instead focus our attention on the less mentioned events such as Statue of Dwayna, the High Risen Wizard or Fire Elemental.

I’m going to go with the Risen Priest of Grenth. He’s the final open world event/boss in the game, and it seems to fit his loot table. It’s not an easy event and I’ve seen it fail many, many times (only completed it once myself).

If anyone wants to examine 14 pages of posts for “some” events…have at it!

Unfortunately I am too lazy to try to get it. But it sure is fun to follow the progress.
A huge +1 from me to all the players who are trying to get it or in some way helping!

For people comparing it to korean grind game or saying it’s not worth it. This is a completely optional thing. You’re not exactly required to grind every day until you get this item.
I’d say having a Final Rest would give you much bigger ep than having a legendary though. Even though the most legendaries (imo) look much better than FR.

LIST OF ALL SUGGESTIONS IN THIS POST
I only included the ones with a confirmed chest.

May have forgotten some, I’m still combing through the posts.

I went through my list again. I did most of the Events again today and I’ve concluded (in my opinion) that it can’t be from a Mini Dungeon. It won’t be from a Splended Chest either, since they’re small and common.

My best guesses would be most likely any of these (listed from rarest to most common imo) :

  • Taidha Covington
  • Fire Elemental
  • Megadestroyer
  • Zho’qafa Catacombs
  • Shadow Behemoth (Most common, farmed on average)

Taidha Covington was a ghost town, even on Tarnished Coast. The people who did show up weren’t even 80. As a result, it technically has the best setup for a rare event that’s hardly exposed to level 80s. It has no “dragon timers” and there’s nothing for 80s in Bloodtide Coast, so not many people pass by.

As an avid PvPer, I find this thread amazing. I check it probably 10 times a day looking at what people discover as well as if someone has looted this thing.

The part I don’t understand, from a game design standpoint, is how a level 80 item, with a specific spawn, could not be in a level 80 zone. And if it isn’t, at least give us SOME idea of where the dang thing is…

I agree with Nurse is that it has to be from a chest that:
1) isn’t farmed a lot
2) when it is farmed, isn’t by level 80s

SOMEONE PLEASE FIND THIS THING!!!

Well but legendairies don’t drop out of chests, do they. Precursors do. And if they made one precursor only drop out of one single chest very rarely, then precursor droprates wouldn’t be balanced.
This is a named weapon. I’m pretty sure that the staff is lore related too. As you can see making it that rare as it is now, it made a hype around it (especially cause of the nice skin). Legendairies don’t have to be the only cool looking weapons. Though they do get their shiny effects and footprints and stuff.
So yeah, making it harder to obtain than a legendary is a good thing, and it is necessary for it to keep its mystery. It’s like a scavenger hunt.

Let me just get something straight, as I am slightly confused.
this staff, drops from a SPECIAL event and boss, that occurs (possibly) during the above stated? I am well aware that the specific place for the event/boss has NOT been discovered or atleast officially announced.
But is it an event that occurs DURING these events? as in, if it was during Fire Elemental, would it then spawn along with it ? or how does it work?? :-) I’m REALLY curious about the discovery of this awesome staff.

I feel like it is the shadow behemoth..I also feel that they (devs) try to say these numbers to demotivate people from farming the actual location and move onto somewhere else, prolonging its acquisition… whether it gets farmed often or not its still a unique event and its spawn time makes it rarer for most events in this area. Just my thoughts though, good luck all and may one of its searchers be the first to acquire it rather than someone just randomly joining in the event.

You seriously can’t see a problem with that drop rate? Really?

Exactly what is the point of wasting the resources to create a model that’s so rare it hasn’t dropped for anyone in the game yet after almost 6 months?

The dearth of armor and weapon skins in the Gem Store represents possibly millions of dollars of lost revenue potential, but you have time to make skins that maybe 10 people will possess in the lifetime of the game and it’s expansions?

It really feels like some things you do are for “MMO developer bragging rights”, rather than for the good of the game. “We had this awesome item in our game that was sooooo rare, only three of them dropped, ever, and one was salvaged for ectos by someone who was clueless as to what they had actually found”!

It comes off as pretty disgusting to some of your fans, maybe a lot of them…

Why are people trying to discourage super rare skins? It doesn’t need to be more than just a skin. I LOVED unique skins in Guild Wars 1. And in my opinion, it’s a shame the skins in this game are so very generic with exception of a few skin sets. (Beaded weapons for example)

I agree with Geikamir, this is a huge hype build around a single weapon. This is awesome, in my opinion. The game really needs more things like this. I would very much like these super rare skins in interesting locations, and I hope this will be added later on with perhaps a little less RNG. * cough*precursorscavengerhunt*cough*

Those aren’t the exact odds, but if my math is correct, 10 players running the event every day might expect one staff to drop after about 7 months. (And we haven’t been out that long.)

Lets work this one out for those who like numbers.
I’m going to assume that the hypothetical 10 people running the event do it once every day for 7 months. Also I’m assuming that you meant the .005 is the chance in % of the staff dropping after 1 person opens the chest.

To calculate the chance that the staff drops at least once, I’m going to subtract the total chance (100%) with the chance that the staff does not drop at all.

in a single case the chance of the staff not dropping would be 99.995% (100-0.005). The amount of times the chest is opened with 10 people doing it once a day for 7 months is 10*(7/12)365 = 2129. The chance of the staff not dropping is then (0.99995^2129)100 = 89.9%.

So to conclude for this example the chance of the staff dropping at least once after 7 months with 10 people opening the chest once a day (assuming the dropchance is 0.005%) is 100-89.9 = 10.1%.

Everybody’s harping on the drop rate, but let’s scale that some :

10 people doing the event only 1 time in a day would take 7 months.
Thus, x% * 10 people * 210 days ~= 100%

This means x = 0.047, or, roughly 0.05 as the devs have stated.

What does this means? It means that the event only needs to be done 2000 times before a drop is seen! 2000 is NOTHING. Think about it. There are 54 servers.

That means only 37 people PER SERVER need to complete this event. This is a decently large sample size too, so we’re probably not going to be seeing 5000+ kills before it drops, it should drop around the average.

You could also look at it as : if 1 person ran the event on each server per day, it would take 37 days.

So, with that in mind, doesn’t this CLEARLY rule out Shadow Behemoth/Catacombs? They were my front runners for the drop because of their style elements, especially Shadow Behemoth with his named chest… but it just seems like it can’t be it now.

10 people doing the event only 1 time in a day would take 7 months.
Thus, x% * 10 people * 210 days ~= 100%

This means x = 0.047, or, roughly 0.05 as the devs have stated.

Hello,

I have a couple of remarks. First the post by Mr Vaughn states x = .005 , not 0.05, which means the chance is actually 10 times smaller than what you suggested.
Secondly you can’t just multiply when it comes to statistics.

Lets try a different aproach. Lets say that to actually see this staff drop we’d want a 90% chance that it drops at least once. With a chance of 99.995% that it doesn’t drop after a single try, we would achieve this 90% chance after approximately 46 051 attempts to open the chest.

For arguments sake let us assume the zho qofa chest is indeed the one that can drop this staff. This is an event that very few people do apparently. Further let’s take a rough guess and say 5 people on each server do this once every day. that would result in 5*54 = 270 chest openings / day. For a 90% chance that the staff has dropped at least once we would have to wait 46 051/270 = 170 days.

So with the assumptions I made this time there is a chance greater than 90% that final rest has already dropped for someone.

It is however commonly thought that this is not the case, so either we’ve not been having alot of luck, or this chest gets opened less than 270 times / day across all servers. Which does indeed suggest that we can exclude shadow behemoth/grenth/…..

I think the event has to fit the style of the item.

Wisteria i.e. is looted from the giant jungle worm meta event.

Guesses from Nurse:

  • Taidha Covington -> dont know it but looks like pirates?
  • Fire Elemental -> very abstract but you could argue to give the C.L.E.A.N. Golem the final rest by defeating the fire elemental. but i dont think thats it
  • Megadestroyer -> destroyer inside a vulcano
  • Zho’qafa Catacombs -> Eyes of Zhaitan are the Old Kings and Queens of Orr, and have been imprisoned by Zhaitan. Killing the Eye in this Meta Event would give the final rest for the King / Queen.
Shadow Behemoth -> Portals to the underworld. Dhuum once ruled over the underworld and uses an scythe.

One i would add:

  • Cathedral of Eternal Radiance -> Dont remember the story to well, but i think it was something about relatives of deceased did some rituals so the dead will find their final rest. Other then that you kill the Corrupted High Priestess in the meta event = final rest for her.

We need to focus on the events that have been listed more than once, then our list should have about 4 events (in theory) as someone quoting someone suggesting, to me is not another suggestion rather a thought on that suggestion so, if an event has been suggested by two different posts then this is an option, imo the best bets are:

1. Zho’Qafa! Now Jeff put “some posts” how many people actually suggested this and not just said i agree with so and so? On top of this how many times have you run it and how many people were you with? I reckon ive done it maybe 8 times each with 5 people or less meaning ive only knocked 40 times off the 200,000 times needed. lets say for arguments sake, i reckon 50 people with 5 man groups did it 10 times = chest looted 2,500 times thats only about 1.5% of how many times it needs to be done! meaning its not farmed at all!
2. Flame Temple Tombs (hardly ever run and its a mini dungeon, the boss is quite hard and its quite a complex set of requirements to get to the end, Lore could fit but a few things dont sit right for me, the chest is small, the boss is small and its not essentially open world because your portal to get into it)
3. Shadow Behemoth (was broken but…farmed to hell! I did it every 2 hours 6 times on one day and then 4 times every 2 hours the next day! I saw at least 6 people each time, meaning its chest it getting looted by a player on average somewhere around 60-80 times a day! on ONE server!!! so this could be more like a 1500-2500 times a day over all of the servers) Now Jeff said he thinks its not been done enough to warrant it dropping then i very much doubt its this as if the event has been working for over 10 days its reached its 200,000 in 10 days on average!

My math might be wrong as i typed it very quick but i think it shows how many people are wrong about the Zho’Qafa being farmed etc! and how moth is farmed to Death!

I run a Guild for people interested in finding it, you dont need to rep just there so we can look at the roster and ask if your free to do a run on one of the events, this is for EU servers just PM in game! the guild is called Lupi stole my pug, Thanks

Yeah I can think we can safely rule out Shadow Behemoth.

There was also mention of of Forsaken Fortune, which fits rather nicely with the gargoyle idea. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Forsaken_Fortune. Being tied to an achievement makes it rather interesting and only “some” people mentioned it. I’ve done it a few times and if i remember, the chest was rather large. Not sure about the uniqueness of the boss though.

doesn’t anyone think the supposed rarity of this item is just stupid?
