ok the only named chests are(that are LARGE as Lindsay put)….

Ancient Chest – Megadestroyer
Demonic Chest – Shadow behemoth
Frost Chest – Jormag
Swamp Chest – Giant Jungle Worm

Now i had this thought yesterday which is why i made a list and also have started a list of every single group event in every map (only from wiki so will need testing etc)

When i looked at the list of named chests i thought this is going to be easy! then i had a daunting thought…Tequatl drops – Shard of the deep…from a unnamed chest (splendid or whatever its called but its basically the same kittenterer’s chest) now that means no matter what the chest name the loot table is specific to the boss not the chest name or identity, correct me if im wrong?

Anyone else thinks it’s something as simple as Grenth or Balthazar?

I’ve been doing research on the two and they both show signs of relating to a Gargoyle Skinned Scyth / Staff.

  • Grenth : Gargoyle’s in Guild Wars 1 had a higher resistance to Lightning and Cold Damage, in addition they were used in the dark ages as a “representation of evil” and “reminding people that the end of days is near.” This ties into Grenth because he is the God of darkness, ice and death. In addition, Grenth stole Dhuum’s powers. Dhuum was pictured with a Scythe and he was an “Cruel and Unjust God of Death.” It was said he hunted down all those who escaped death which ties into the Gargoyle’s being a “reminder to people that the end of days is near”.
  • Balthazar : One of Balthazar’s titles is “He That Shows Us The FINAL Truth”. In addition, Scythe Dervishes from Guild Wars 1 show their patronage to Balthazar. Another fun fact is that some think Balthazar is another representation of the Biblical Magi (Three Wise Men / Three Kings). This is interesting because if you look up The Legend of La Gargouille you’ll see that La Gargouille is said to have been the typical dragon with batlike wings that ties to the Church/Religion reference of the Three Kings. In addition, 3 of the Gods (Balthazar, Melandru & Dwayna) made their home in Orr (Three Kings?) but that really has nothing to do with this lol.

I’m leaning more towards Grenth, since that makes more sense. Maybe it’s just bad RNG or whatever. It’s the best I could come up with after researching for an hour.

:p Sorry if it’s been said before.

But on that note i believe it could be Megadestroyer or Benemoth as both rarely get done…and as for all you guys says they it got farmed in beta (well its beta! nothing worked properly! let alone a loot table on a specific chest from a specific boss! Which BTW they said they were not going to do, the whole anti farming one boss malarky etc)

Ive personally not done Megadestroyer so ill be looking to farm this soon, but i have run the moth 4 times tonight and its now on a pretty good 2 hour turnaround, just make sure the brewing one is started on the escort, and that the corrupted oakheart is down at the end of the 2 hours, dragontimer is up to date at this point of post

I been farming Zho’qafaot catacombs lately think I did it like 20 times only one I got exotic but not from chest think I got some names piece of armour from Eye
Its still my prefered place for Final rest to drop
Only question I have is: do all Glorious Chests share same loot table? because if they do then catacombs is not the place… It doesnt have specific name chest just huge splendid one if I remember name correctly

I do know the event that Flint’s talking about is barely touched, which is a shame. Especially considering the bloody Yogscast covered that specific mini dungeon in beta, I would have thought it would’ve given it loads of attention.

I don’t have much to add, and obviously I’ll post if I see it, but this a really interesting thread and a great example of community driven meta-game

I think we can just remove zho’qafa as a chance… Simply because the mod said something about “The chest with this lootable” or something like that. And from zho’qafa its a glorious chest i think, and there are so many of them around the world, and they have all the same loot table… So we have to find a chest with a unique name, like the demonic chest

Why do people keep saying that all chests of the same name share the same loot table? There are examples where this isn’t the case. So far the only limitation I’ve seen on chests is the quantity of items. This leads me to believe that it’s all chests sharing a base loot table with some having extra items at the minuscule rate.

has anyone considered that it could be a special event chain during night?

The wiki says that there are multiple different events during night, and if there are only a couple of minutes of night time it could be we haven’t found the right chain because it’s rare and only takes place at night.

the more I read theories the more I want to try and figure out where this is, Ive been thinking and it may be nothing but the Gargoyle that sits on the staff did anyone think about this?

Looking back at the lore of gw1 leading to gw2 the Gargoyles just vanished "1185AE Gargoyles mysteriously vanish from Ascalon”…

There is some speculation where they went but I think maybe this means we can rule out Orr? If I remember rightly Gargoyles still exist just in the Mad king realm of the underworld hence why they come out at Halloween. So maybe Shadow behemoth opening portals from the Underworld allows a Gargoyle to escape and find the owner of the staff. it spawns a “demonic” chest the staff looks pretty demonic so yeah id say that this event is pretty much it.

If its not the Shadow event then I think its somewhere in Ascalon, Gargoyles mostly lived in Ascalon and it Catacombs so maybe there could be a rare event somewhere in Ascalon or even a common event people rarely do that is based underground.

The last idea to go with gargoyles is the fact the ones that lived in kryta where mostly by the sea so maybe the ones that where left behind just got washed away and there could be a event underwater somewhere in the water but I cant think of any “Large” chest events underwater

anyway yeah if i was to place a bet id go with shadow behemoth, more and more people are starting to do this event so maybe we will see one soon, if not there could be a special timer or trigger, for example it was only able to drop during Halloween when gargoyles made a appearance with mad king or maybe when the event occurs at a special time/day/full moon/wearing odd socks/eating only salad.

I’m still not sure why everyone is so busy getting hung up on lore. If you go around trying to do every single event that has anything to do with the slightest mention of anything related to a gargoyle, the staff is never going to be found. Instead of wasting time speculating about finding the tiniest event chain in the darkest corner of the map (like what most of you have probably been doing for months already, as the staff has yet to be found), get a guild group and farm events like Megadestroyer, Shadow Behemoth, and other similar bosses that have unique chests. Taking that route is simple, can be done easily by a large number of people, and will probably lead to the staff being found (or not being found, in which case you can go back to scavenging for events that are related to a gargoyle’s mom’s pet dog). Focus on the big and easy ones first, then move on if the staff isn’t found after a month or so.

The issue is that with only doing the “big and easy ones” you’re focusing on the non-rare ones, which is counter to what devs have said multiple times now.

Shadow Behemoth has been farmed to death on my server(even before the “fixes” to it); now it’s routine to see more people than Jormag there(50+) during ALL times of the day.

My vote goes for a REALLY obscure event chain that probably is time of day dependent or at the very least dependent on some certain map/area wide conditions(read: other nearby events).

I’m leaning more toward Zho’Qafa Catacombs as to where Final Rest is obtained. Personally, I never knew that place existed and I was wondering why my Orr area completion was stuck at 59/60 for months O.O

If you take a look at one of the entrance to Zho’Qafa Catacombs on the world map, its look like a scythe head. Possibly a hint! Also the gargoyle design on the Final Rest staff remind me of the Royal Guards to the rare boss, Eye of Zhaitan(“Source of Orr” Storyline) which are the Old Kings and Queens of Orr.

As for the “same name chest share the same loot table” argument. Doesn’t The Shatterer and Tequatl the Sunless share the same reward chest name ? If that is the case then The Shatterer’s chest should also have a chance to obtain a “Shard of the Deep” scepter which is suppose to be unique to Tequatl’s reward chest.

Well, the thing is that zho’qafa was the first theory to pop up… It have been farmed for months now, by hunters. If we could get a precursor from that event, people would have gotten tons of precursors, and i doubt the final rest’s drop rate is so much lower than a precursor.

Im not saying its not from that event, but most liikely not, since its been farmed for months

Yes there is, but it doesn’t give a chest. And according to the (quotes of the) Dev posts in this thread, the event is in the open world. It’s just an extra event like the torch in AC and the Ooze king and queen in CoF.

Neither of those. They have both been looted millions of times (individually speaking).

Have you ever looted a Precursor or any other super rare item not during a Lost Shore Event?

There’s not a lot of Precursor’s on the Trading Post. I’m guessing the drop rate of Final Rest is even rarer than a Precursor.

Not to mention someone could have gotten it and not even know what it means.

A lot of theories have been exhausted, tried and failed.

This is a relatively unknown/completed event from what I understand. It fits with the catacombs/“final resting place” theme:

It’s a Grand Chest

I just did it, it’s a really good theory actually. Not a lot of people do it and it’s a “mini dungeon” that still holds its “open world” element since everyone can jump right in without a party. – However I wonder if it has any chance of dropping there because it’s a low level area. Even if it has loot scaling, what are the chances that it’s flagged for that chest for a level 80 to get?

Or maybe that’s the brilliance of it all, it’s rare because (besides its obviously low drop rate) not many maxed level characters go there and since Final Rest is a level 80 weapon, lower leveled characters don’t even stand a chance of getting it (since the loot from chests are scaled).

Oh the mind games. T.T

Huh…thanks for the correction. I went through the “chest” page of the wiki to find named chests and they listed “Rhendak’s Chest” as a named chest.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Chest

Is it just named Rhendak’s Chest before you spawn him? Is the wiki just wrong entirely?

As for some other possible events, I was thinking about Plains of Ashford. Each starting zone has a big world boss style event, except for Plains of Ashford, right? Some people mentioned the Barradin’s Tomb meta event chain and the Ascalon City event chain too, but do those end in a big chest? I checked them yesterday, but I was unable to catch them active.

I’m interested in the unique chests from the starter zone bosses after hearing about Wisteria from the wurm in Caledon. If that chest has a unique exotic, why not the other starter zone bosses?

I also find the different event chains at night to be interesting. That’s a good thing to look into.

I think we should focus our attention on open world events/event chains that spawn named chests (i.e. Grand Chest, Splendid Chest), but which are unlikely to attract attention from level 80’s because they’re located in sub-80 zones.

Battle in the Vault gives a Grand Chest as a reward, I believe. Its position means that there should be a high number of people who do the event, but whether or not it’s done by level 80’s who have a chance to get a level 80 Exotic is another question. One thing that may weigh in its favour is the fact that the event takes place in old Ascalonian catacombs, which supports the gargoyle appearance of the staff.

The same rules could apply to Flame Temple Tombs, since the place is a last refuge for the Flame Legion to flee to, as well as it being an ancient tomb for Ascalonians from a time before the Searing. It’s an underwater dungeon in a level 15 – 25 zone, meaning that level 80’s are not likely to visit it either. I believe the chest spawned by killing the Champion Boss at the end is a Glorious Chest.

I’ve also done the Demagogue event in Brisban Wildlands twice, but both were on sub-80 characters. The chest that spawns at the end is a Splendid Chest, shaped like the sylvari chests.

If thats the case, it could be just about any event that has at least a glorious/magnificent chest, which just made it finding Final Rest that much harder. I really wish we could get a hint saying its not in X country(?), at least that would narrow the search down some, instead of being the whole of Tyria.

Is there any event(s) that happen in Jalis’s tomb (Ironhammer’s Crypt, Frostgate Falls POI) ? Its a tomb, which only kinda maps to the staffs name, though not the skin of the staff)

additional mysteriousness:

When doing dynamic events, be aware that finishing some may trigger others across the map.

If you are in lornars, you can for instance trigger 2 fights near the reapers gate, after doing a fight near the priory base, and then once all 3 are done, there’s a fourth fight by the delvers ridge. None of these dynamic events indicate that the other ones will now be active, you basically have to know in advance, or look pretty much everywhere.

It’s possible that there’s a dynamic event somewhere in say, cursed shore, that triggers another dynamic event in cursed shore, but very far away.

I just wanted to throw this out there

Though, it has nothing to do with a Gargoyle Scythe-shaped Staff, it is a ‘rare event’ with ‘rare’ bosses’ that can potentially happen throughout several different zones and areas. The more people that are there, the more “Modus Sceleris” Guild members participate (atleast in the particular area that I found them in.)

There’s also a Necromancer Guild Member that can ambush players throughout the zones.

It does reward a Chest at the end with a unique name of “Modus Sceleris’ Supplies” – I confirmed it today. I do not know if the loot scales the more people that are present, considering it’s unique mechanic, I only did it with one other person (thus only facing 2 of the Modus Sceleris Guild members).

When it was over, the “Modus Sceleris” Guild walked through a portal and relocated elsewhere (I’m assuming).

Meh, probably a dead end though.

/EDIT
I also tried finding other “rare spawned” events but most of them have been changed since Beta.

None are unique to any one grave, and don’t appear to give a clue to anything. Here they are:

Went to Shaemoor and translated all the gravestones. Most of them have nothing, others had the following:

If you read this
you are standing
on my head

Grenth bless the soil
Grenth bless the stone
Grenth bless the silence
So leave me alone

I took the time
to stand in line
to best a mighty foe
but boredom struck
I’m out of luck
and now I lie below

Where’s
my resurect*
portal?

Tomb of the
Scrybe* (The grave that the Lady in White goes to says this on it, but it is not the only one that says this.)

This
Guy
Is
Dead

I told you
I was sick

Rest in Peace (in a banner)
I told you I was sick

*These are misspelled on the stones, I translated them here exactly. ‘Scrybe’ is probably intentionally ironic, but I have no answer for why ‘resurect’ is misspelled.

My turret is so much better at this game than I am.

Apparently there are more named chests around the world. Yesterday I bumped into an event in Mount Maelstorm (Inqest Golem Mark II). Happened to kill him with a nother dood, and there was a chest after it named “Inquest recources” According to the size and the loot from the chest, I would say it is a splendid chest but with msot likely unique loot.

I can say that the Shadow behemoth drops excotics i scored as a Lev 80 Norgu’s Mantel

which I found very interesting from this event since he was a Mesmer, so we can say its loot table must be very interesting and may still contain our Final Rest .

Ps – note to guys doing the wiki entres I will hang on to this drop so pm me in game so u can add the pic and details to wiki if you like. Also if anyone is keeping track of SB’s loot table.

cheers come on devs a tiny little hint wont hurt

Has anyone considered the possibility that either the developer was being untruthful or is just simply misinformed at the time of his hint? On one hand many players have been farming events and large chests for millions of hours and never got Final Rest, and on the other hand players have been playing this game and all its events for millions of hours… JUST AS PLANNED. What I’m trying to suggest is, and I’m open to being wrong, hell I hope I’m wrong, that Murdock’s comment was simply designed to send us on a wild goose chase and make us keep playing their large epic events over and over.

There is no Final Rest in this game. The code may exist, but it can never be obtained, unless this supposedly large chest is well hidden, possibly in Caudecus’ UFO underneath Queensdale. But it can only be seen and looted if you have 1000 globs of ectos in your inventory.

I say we cannot rule out the common large events, specially in light of a bug being found with the qualifying of loot, which could of been blocking the dropping of Final Rest from its chest. Something along of the lines of “Yes you can have loot, but you do not qualify for anything more than ….”.
