I really can’t give out any hints or information, especially since anything I say is going to be intensely analyzed. So I’m going to play it safe and not comment on the size of the boss, the chest, or the rarity of the boss. I will confirm that I looked in the game data and traced the item to its loot table to the chest that uses the loot table to the event that spawns the chest to make sure everything is set up. I can also confirm that it has a very low drop rate, so running the event 5 times or 10 times proves nothing.

Thanks for posting. Are other devs allowed to give us more hints eventually?

So does this mean it can be any chest then, and not necessarily a unique named chest? Thats what I gathered from this. Anyone else read it that way?

I still think Font of Rhand is in the running- especially if the size of the chest is not confirmed.
It is rarely done, it is in Ascalon and the final boss is underwater.
I know I’ve said it before but it is the best I can come up with- feel a bit like a headless chicken looking in all directions :P

If you’re talking about the char veteran/champion that can be soloed (I know, since I had to do it solo since the two others got defeated), I don’t think the chest is large. I think it was only a splendid one.

I also think it’s zho catacombs. Mainly because even after the theory was released nobody still does the event frequently. I did it about 10 times and usually solo because people do not know about it and they are more interested in balthazaar. After 10 times though it’s disheartening to keep doing it and spending about an hour soloing the event every time. Maybe we should gather a group of people to do it in a specific server every 2-3 hrs or whenever the event triggers. This way the loot is distributed among more people and the chance of it dropping is increased.

Mr. Vaughn,

Is there any way it would be possible to give us a hint in the form of an eliminator? For example could you tell us the event we are looking for “is not in Kryta” or “is not in a zone below level 50.” Or something to that effect.

Something as simple as those elimination examples would go a long way in narrowing down the search over a very large world.

Thank you.

So after reading loads of posts about Zho’qafa Catacombs, I’m just going to go ahead and build my case for Shadow Behemoth.

I used to be on board with the idea of it dropping from the catacombs, the lore aspect of a hint is definitely strong there: Dead stuff, coffins, etc. However, some things caused me to question that hypothesis, and I no longer think it is viable.

  • Zho’qafa has been farmed: A few guildies of mine, with a group of 20 (sometimes more) people consistently farmed the catacombs on a daily basis for 2 months. These players were, for the most part, level 80, and often did the event multiple times a day, and never once saw Final Rest. I would provide names of players, in case anyone is skeptical, but I feel that would be unethical to do. I will, however, say that it was on the Darkhaven server.
  • Shadow Behemoth is underfarmed: Today alone, about 9 guildies of mine (me included) killed Shadow Behemoth across Yak’s Bend, Jade Quarry, and Blackgate. Unless anyone in our group killed him without me being aware, we killed him 12 times each, making 108 total kills today alone. as far as the loot is concerned, 1 person got a level 80 exotic trident, unnamed, and several people got rares over the different attempts. The main point here, is that even though we killed him 108 times just today, there were never more than 20 or so people, maybe only 3 to 5 of those people being level 80 (not including us). I know that Shadow Behemoth was farmed a lot when the game first came out, but how many of those players were level 80? Did they consistently farm it? On top of that, from the reading I’ve done, Shadow Behemoth was bugged for about 2 months across many servers, if not all, and never spawned. That would go a long way towards leading to him being underfarmed.
  • Shadow Behemoth is not known to have a unique exotic associated with it: As far as I know, all other world bosses that have achievements associated with their names also drop a level 80 exotic that is unique to them, save the Steam Ogre. The Giant Jungle Wurm in Caledon Forest drops Wisteria, an exotic focus exclusive to that area, and at the time of typing this, there are only 13 Wisterias listed on the trading post. If you can only get Wisteria by being level 80 and doing the event, I would assume that the same requirement would be true for Final Rest if it were to drop from Shadow Behemoth.
  • The chest: The chest that Shadow Behemoth spawns, is, as far as I know, unique. It is a Demonic Chest, and it would make sense for it to have its own unique loot table. According to what I’ve read about the Glorious Chests (like the one in the Catacombs) is that they all share a loot table. Another point I’d like to make about the chest is that it is as tall as my max height Norn, and taller than my max height Human (I’ll attach a picture). On top of this, the chest for Shadow Behemoth seems to have some sort of diminishing return associated with it. There were instances where my guildies and I got no chest after killing him, so we waited a few hours and continued to farm it again.
  • In general: I’m not making any claim here to be right, I’m only stating why I am personally betting on Shadow Behemoth at this point. It’s obscure, it’s underfarmed, it’s an event chain, its a gigantic boss with a massive chest, and the level of the zone has nothing to do with the loot you get from the chest. I’m willing to at least put in 2 months of steady and consistent farming to see where that takes me, because I’ve wanted this staff for quite some time. As this is only a hypothesis, feel free to criticize it, test it, and read posts from other people that have the same idea. But hopefully we see Final Rest drop from somewhere soon, wherever it may be.

Shadow has been farmed a lot in my server since the patch (yes by 80s), everytime the meta chain started it was killed in about 10 minutes. That’s why I thought I’d see the staff soon if he dropped it but still nothing, I’m sure a lot of servers are like this. Unless ofc the event is still bugged but it would be cruel for the dev to not tell us that it drops from an event that’s bugged, ofc it would narrow it down but then we are left with false hope if this is the case.

This, though it doesn’t have to be from Mr. Vaughn. I’d be happy with any dev posting saying its not in X country(?), at least then we could stop wasting time looking in zones that have no possibility of having the event, boss, and chest that contains Final Rest.

*Growing

The game has been growing consistently every week for the last 9 weeks. It was just mentioned in an interview and was posted about by the devs a week or two ago.

I think shadow behemoth is the best bet. He is a rather rare event (i’ve leveled 4 characters through that area and never seen him). And hedrops a very large chest from what i’ve seen, which is also unique.

Shadow Behemoth was broken on my server (Tarnished Coast) for a long time; but, since the patch, it is being killed regularly and whenever I have been there at least two dozen folks are in on the killing. I expect if it drops from this boss, from that chest, it will be discovered soon.

On the other hand, if it has not been broken on other servers, and was farmed like it is now on TC, I don’t see how it would not have dropped by now.

There is a very good chance that “Last Rest” (and other items) have dropped many times and the players (not knowing that it was rare/special) tossed it in the MF, vendored or destroyed it.

Given that not all professions would have any use for it AND when/if dropped nothing in game points out that its especially ‘rare’ or ‘unique’, I think this is likely the case.

(I tossed a ‘Lover’ back in the MF once for this very reason)

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Shadow-Behemoth-doesn-t-always-spawn-Merged#post665817 bugged Shadow Behemoth thread began 3 months ago, which merely points out that the Boss had not been killed nearly as often as other world bosses were since launch.
So many tombs, so many undead, so many results of war in a fictional fantasy world. Where is the small gargoyle with the stick jammed up it’sA staff that has not yet been found in a fantasy world where the lore says gargoyles have not existed in a long long long time. Not one enemy NPC is using it, and how much confidence should anyone have in user modified Wiki? (b4 another new-to-thread-person asks, I’ll preemptively answer: We say Gargoyle because in the Myst, The PvP locker has the Gargoyle Staff skin available to preview. It is the same skin as Final Rest. http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/10weip/list_of_named_exotic_weapons/ Copy the Final Rest preview code from the linked page, paste it in game and preview the staff on a character while wearing your PvE gear. I like that there aspect of Vaughn hint being a Rare boss, and the Wiki description of NPC ranks, that Legendary NPCs are Rare, but can we trust the association from the hint to the NPC rank? can we trust the Wiki description/terminology? /shrug. If the Wiki-NPC rank page can possibly be confirmed as trustworthy hint hint, nudge nudge, it would help with hunting the very rare item. One thing I’m surprised hasn’t really been formulated by the GW2 community yet is a compendium of items that have dropped in Glorious or other “large” chests at each location. All of these types of chests have to have “very” rare items in their respective loot tables, many of which I’m sure have already been found…but they haven’t been documented on a consistent basis.

If we start documenting the loot tables of each large chest we can narrow it down to which one has the highest chance of getting [Final Rest] to drop.

I have been trying to work my way through the Zho’Qafa catacombs. As usual, Orr is a giant empty sewer, where you fight your way through trash mobs for no gain. I hate Orr. Does any else on Fort Aspenwood go down there? Am I gonna have to find a different server? I’m pretty sure it doesn’t drop at shelt/pen, but that is the only place in Orr that has other players. I think this is probably the best idea based on how empty it always is in the catacombs.

The code has been checked its in the table from the chest from the event. IF the event was in a chain then i’m sure that whole event chain would be checked
Take this example : It DOES drop from shadow. BUT the event chain is ‘broken’ that means the last event is unable to start – THIS applies to any other chain which is a process of eventS (plural) so EITHER:
It IS part of a chain and only the final event was checked
It is part of a chain and the series was checked but an S was missed off event
It is a SINGLE event not part of a chain

I have explored a lot of Tyria (not all, by any means, and not just the PoI’s and Waypoints) and I have come across lone champ-level creatures in hard to reach, out-of-the-way places.

Most of them don’t have events linked to them that I know of. I have not killed many of them either, becasue even at 80, some of these creatures hit really hard. For instance, the champ level 23 froggie king in the cave in the zone NE of Metrica (forget the name) can 2-shot me.

Is there a list somewhere of actual, documented events for the whole of Tyria? It may be in an event that for whatever reason nobody has triggered yet because the parameters fo that event haven’t been met yet.

I just keep having a feeling that “If A then B” happens, the choice you make for “B” will determine whether you get choice “C” or choice “R” and we’re just making the incorrect choices to arrive at the desired end result.

With how low the drop rate is, and the likelihood that it’s a group event (so the Anet employee would need help from the community or from quite a few Anet employees) makes that not a real viable idea. The best Anet could really do (without revealing more about it) is to attain it on the test servers.

That would prove nothing though, since the test servers have frequently had cases where something worked fine there, but then faceplanted on the live servers. I think it’s reasonable to suspect that this is a case where everything looks perfectly fine on paper, all the numbers in the flowcharts seem to be in the proper place, and yet for some inexplicable reason the thing just doesn’t work on live.

I doubt Anet wouldnt notice something like that. The reason being that if it does srop from a major/popular boss, grenth, melandru, teq, etc. then id think anet would realize something is seriously wrong with the stats since collectively the players have killed each of those bosses at least a 1000 times since release. They did say the drop rate is very low but I doubt that low. Id still guess its in orr, just a much less popular legendary boss, like the one I suggested in the zhoqafa chain. The reddit user I had seen mentioned something interesting. He said during the final part of the chain where they meet the eye of zhaitan, he says something like “you have disturbed my FINAL RESTING place”. Along with thr fact that the people in the chain mention searching for something valuable

Also doubt Anet would not notice:
Godskull glitch
21 Karma exploit
Snowflake exploit
CM story money runs
Balthazar event chains and other event chains broken constantly for months
Cursed Shore farm
Plinxx Farm
Grenth Farm

Oh wait….

They did notice. That’s why those were all fixed so quickly (well, broken events took a while because repro is so problematic for most of them). By your logic, it must work because the issues you’re comparing it to have all been resolved.

Keep in mind that by the description we were given the event must spawn a chest, the drop won’t come directly from the boss. Also the event must have a boss, so events without a boss that spawn a chest won’t be it.

personally it may not be in the game – devs can come here all they want and say they checked up on the loot tables etc. but that could be them just talking. events have been farmed so much since release that at least ONE person if not a few have this final rest staff. those people i’m sure would know the value of that staff or at least some screen shots on this forum of it. almost as if final rest is the item to keep people doing big chest events, and its made not to drop. lol.

Some events have been heavily farmed (like Shadow Behemoth and Zho’qafa) but others have not. For example, as someone else mentioned, the Demagogue event is extremely rarely completed. It’s in a purely optional portion of a low population zone, only accessible by a semi-hidden path in an area no one has much reason to go. It’s also a group event, so even those people who manage to stumble upon it are unlikely to complete it. I had two 100% map completion characters before even discovering that area existed. I only happened to find it because I was determined to complete the Maguuma Explorer achievement I had been sitting at 165/166 on.

There’s other candidates like this that are very rarely completed. Bashing Bauxite Alchemicals has been mentioned as a possibility. It’s a rarely completed underwater group event that’s fairly difficult. I’m sure there’s a number of other underwater or hidden events like those two.

For those looking for event candidates, most of the events that have chests are meta events. Here is the wiki’s list of meta events. I can’t vouch for completeness, but since meta events always provide a notification, they’re unlikely to be missed. Data isn’t always available on whether an event drops a chest or not, so the lack of a note like “a glorious chest spawns after completion” does not necessarily imply there’s no chest reward. If you do one of these events and have information to add to the wiki, please make those edits.

Taken from a reddit user online – jmpherso which I think contains valuable information and information for a guild. The reddit thread is here http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/18jk5r/final_rest_apparently_have_a_very_low_drop_rate/

Okay, we need to step it up folks.

Let’s put together a cross-server guild where we can spam the chat with any relevant events happening on any of the servers so we can all quickly join up and guest to take part in said event.

We know numerous things.

1) You must kill a boss.

2) It’s looted FROM a chest.

Therefore (I’m doing my discrete math homework as we speak) : The boss you kill drops or “upgrades” a chest.

3) It’s involved in an event.

Therefore, it is part of an event chain that spawns a boss which drops a chest.

4) “Amount of times run” means nothing if we’re talking anything less than thousands. That being said, he specifically said “5 or 10 times”, meaning someone might be on to something if they brought up having farmed a more rare event numerous times, specifically because he made a counter point to that.

It’s clearly not from an event that has been run into the ground tens of thousands of times, that much is for sure.

So, I’m going to start working on a list of chests dropped from bosses during events. Can we get someone to start a guild who’s active and can keep up to date on a roster/invite people who ask?

List:

1) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kill_the_imp_lord_to_stop_him_from_summoning_more_imps Interesting because the chest doesn’t spawn from the boss, but you must kill the boss to reach the chest.

2) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Slay_the_destroyer_troll_released_from_the_tomb Another interesting one. I’m not 100% sure if you can get the chest without killing the boss, but a tomb is involved, as is a key. This one is likely done rarely.

So that is every large, named chest that is dropped in response to interaction with a boss. If anyone can comment on how often these events have been done, we can check some of these off.

I’ve created a guild called Final Rest Looters, you can reach me at Jikuim.1349 in the in game messaging system. I really think this needs to happen, come on people! I’m going to repost this as it’s own post once this topic falls from front page so it can keep some attention.

I’ve italicized all of the chests which, to me, seem VERY unlikely.

The first few of us who have joined are deciding on two servers to use for farming to switch back and forth between for doing events. The first we decided on is Desolation, second is still being decided on.

I think we would all apreciate if we could get an official response to some of this questions:
1. At various interviews devs mentioned hints and clues all across world, hints about MF recipes, legendary recipes etc. Is there a hint/clue about Final Rest location out there in Tyria?
2. Since Final Rest is intended (or not) to be rare and special, is it tied to some history and lore or is it just a rare skin without background? Also, if it indeed has some lore about it is there any way we could get our paws on that lore?

I hope that mr. Jeffrey Vaughn will have liberty to give us answers, since they wouldnt be direct hints but would matter none the less!

It’s clearly not from an event that has been run into the ground tens of thousands of times, that much is for sure.

This ^^^, we cannot rule out a popular event. Just because we have not had someone say they found it does not mean it has not already dropped. How many people run those events yet do not come to forums, and since Final Rest is not on TP, anyone who does not look at the forums might think because it is not listed it might be worthless.

The drop rate IS extremely low so ruling out an event based on its popularity could mean we’re missing it all together.

Can we combine the threads? There’s another one in crafting section I think. Or it might be the events section.

I can almost promise you it’s not going to be the farmed events. People ping loot (especially named exotics) all the time after looting.

So we know that [Wisteria] is a rare level 80 drop from the Jungle Wurm. It has to be assumed that this is possibly the rarest item on that mob’s loot table.

That said, we have yet to find out what the rare items are on loot table’s for the Shadow Behemoth, Fire Elemental, and the Frozen Maw. There are plenty of other chests out there we need to work on, but this would be a great (and easy) place to start.

Also, make sure you’re on an 80 level character when fighting these mobs for a chance at the rarest item.

We can rule out popular events for a different reason. Considering there is only a smaller segement of the population looking for the item, we need to concentrate our efforts in areas that are NOT popular to increase our pool of data. Popular events are popular, if the item drops from a popular event, eventually that item will make its way onto the TP, when that happens we know the item was found. By focusing our efforts on unpopular events we make it more likely that Final Rest will be found.

Basically I would recommend not spending any effort on any popular event chain, such as Shadow Behemoth.

I would also rule out events that lead to a chest that already drops a known named exotic and focus on the events that dont currently have a known named unique exotic associated with them.

Zone – Malchors Leap
PoI – Kitah Manse

Why? Well…its underground with 3 priory explorer npcs wandering around it, there are also lit torches that glow purple.

Whilst going down also, there is a floating green object, unknown to me, and pulses every second.

When you reach the npcs, there is empty space, a space large enough for a big boss battle.

Nothing is interact able, but aroused my suspicion about this spot.

Dunno what events happens as i don’t stick around in malchors leap for long.

Yet another theory :o

Before you lies a battered statue of Dwayna. The elements have not been kind to it.
Examine the area.
There are indentations in the ground before the statue. It appears to have been made by people who spent a great deal of time kneeling here.

Kneeling will start an event- has anyone tried other actions at all the other statues in one log in (as needed to complete the books) ALSO the tomb is EMPTY where is Saul D’Alessio??

Hello all,

I’m slightly tired and have perhaps drunk too much red wine, but I think I may have something which strongly indicates the whereabouts of Final Rest. Either that or it is a giant red herring.

I believe Final Rest is dropped from the chest that spawns when you complete the group event “kill the champion risen megalodon” by the Shipwreck Rock Waypoint at the southern most point of Orr.

The first clue is given quite clearly when you speak to the ghostly crew who have been shipwrecked, right by the waypoint. When speaking to crew member Sjoerd, he says “Orr is no place for the living. Not these days”, to which your reply is “You deserve to REST. May the Spirits of the Wild guide you to your FINAL reward” (my caps). See the attached screenshot.

The second clue is given when you speak to crew member Camelia, who stands by the water and says “I have been doomed to an eternity of constant, sleepless vigil by a monstrous megalodon shark….will you kill it for me?” i.e. will you help end her constant, sleepless vigil and help her to achieve Final Rest? See second attached screenshot.

No one ever does the Megalodon event because frankly it’s underwater and most people (that I know, anyway) avoid underwater combat wherever possible. Not only that but it is in the furthest corner of Orr where people hardly go anyway.

Strongly suggest people start checking this out!

Anyone started or starting a Guild for the purpose of grouping players that are interested in finding the staff? What is the server and the guild name? (Final Rest? Gargoyle on a Stick? Artifact Staff Service? Named Exotic Staffers? Mystery Van? hehhehhehheh) I’d be willing to guest onto a server to join the hunt with other hunters.

That there Sjoerd is part of a personal story mission http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Romke%27s_Final_Voyage . There are far too many uses of rest and final throughout Tyria, due to the war. Not to say it’s not possible that the big fish might drop it. Anyone know what the chest is called? (merely to add to the database of observations)

Ok I just completed this event and can confirm NO chest drops from the Champion Risen Megalodon event. We killed the shark and looked all over but no chest. Even talked to the NPC ghosts again and they repeated their messages.

Also did Captain Rotbeard and no chest spawns from that event either, so can at least remove those two events out of the equation for now.

In my long winded post a page or so back I mentioned Aurora’s Remains and the event there. I only brought it up that it had this weird otherworldly homey feeling to it. The event I did solo wasn’t too terribly hard, and it did have a chest at the end. Granted it wasn’t a huge chest it was a Sylvari-looking chest. I looted a few greens and blues from it. Event link is below.

It’s http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Draw_out_and_destroy_the_Demagogue%27s_spirit

Area is filled with Shining Blade and White Mantle ghosts, and some of the NPCs mention that they were slain there during a battle that took place there. Final Rest is usually determined to be the spot where someone died. So at this point instead of looking into Orr and doing that Catacombs event maybe look elsewhere? I highly doubt it’s even in Orr and could be a level 80 exclusive drop from any chest granting event in the game world.

Before anyone asks I was the only person doing this Group Event.
