doesn’t anyone think the supposed rarity of this item is just stupid?

I think the rarity is great, a chance for a player to actually be unique is so rare on this game, most 80+ all look the same, and with so few armor and weapon skins, i think its great they added things like this, my only issue is they made it too hard to find the location, make the loot chance as hard as they like but not giving any clues on location which makes it too hard to find

Related to the forsaken fortune thing. I finished that “run” 2 days ago. The chest at the end is a small one….very small. In fact i was having issues even seeing the chest because of the boss’es corpse which was on it.. There are no “gargoyles” in that mini dungeon. Just some big “grave digger” that is irritating but definitely soloable.

It’s HIGHLY unlikely that’s the place u get it.

Also take in consideration that, that staff was ingame before that dungeon was even opened (Halloween)

either we’ve not been having alot of luck, or this chest gets opened less than 270 times / day across all servers. Which does indeed suggest that we can exclude shadow behemoth/grenth/…..

Yes, but what chest in the game is opened less than 270 times per day across all servers? We have over 400’000 players concurrent, and at least 10’000 players actively searching for final rest.

Even if you take a drop rate of 0.00005, much much lower than the devs state it is, that chest would only need to be opened 20’000 times total for there to be a 1.0 chance for someone to get Final rest. Surely there is no chest in the game that has not been opened that number of times already, even though we have “not been out 7 months yet”.

I think the real answer is that there is a wider RNG loot bug at play (the same one affecting champion loot) and they haven’t realised it yet.

Just a quick note—I said the odds of it dropping was closer to .005 than the 1 in a million or so that was tossed out. Those aren’t the exact odds, but if my math is correct, 10 players running the event every day might expect one staff to drop after about 7 months. (And we haven’t been out that long.)

…So it cannot be meaningfully farmed even if we did know exactly where to look.

I guess I’ll know when someone has discovered it when it shows up on the Trading Post for 3000g. Which would be a bargain at this point.

Good luck all. Not something I’m going to spend game time seeking.

I think I might be with you. If the drop rate is really that low (and MF is not supposed to affect chest drop rates), its basically impossible for a person to get this, unless you’re EXTREMELY lucky.

I’m not sure why many people seem so surprised with the drop rate (which would be around 0.05% according to what Vaughn said, not 0.005% like some of the posts state). Whenever I was playing with some maths I was assuming the drop rate of 0.02% for being pessimistic (this was the drop rate of GW1 mini polar bear, defined by the devs as ‘absurdly low’) or 0.1% for being optimistic, so looks like I was spot on. It makes the item really rare indeed, but we’ve already known that, right?

It seems worse because we just don’t know where it is yet, once it drops for one person, people will start farming the place, then they’ll find tricks to clear it quickly and then we’ll have more farmers which will result in several of those on the TP soon after. Obviously the best bet to guarantee yourself one is to start saving money for it, which is what I’ve been doing I might get lucky and had it drop instead, or I might not, no need to be upset.

And to all the people saying that the whole thing is stupid, or that the staff is ugly, or something blabla legendary blabla no particle effects.
First of all, if you like the look of the staff or not is a matter of taste. This is my favourite staff skin since I saw it in beta and back then decided I was gonna go for it. The fact that it turned out to be so special actually makes me glad. I’d like to go for a legendary to have some goal to work towards, and afterwards have the item that really shows that I worked for it one way or the other. But I find every single one of them incredibly fugly. So instead I end up transmuting my exotics with Krytan skins that cost 15c on the TP (the axe is honestly the best axe skin in the game!).

As for the hiding place of this beauty, I still think Zho’Qafa is our best bet, and that’s the place I’m gonna keep doing. The problem with confirming if it is/is not the right place, is that estimating how many times the chest was open is harder then it seems at first. We’ve got over 50 servers and the game has been out around 170 days, but can you really tell for sure when people started doing the event regularly, how often, on which servers (I’ve been on 4 since release and the PvE activity really varied), how many of them opens the chest each time? Imo the Catacombs are still in the game when talking statistics, and the place just seems to fit – simple connections like catacombs/high level zone/long event chain are present without too much overthinking done (“Omg The Rainbow Pirate used the word ‘final’ and his name starts with R, just like ‘Rest’ and he has a birthmark that looks like a gargoyle upside down I swear, ZOMG IT FITS”).

Anyway, good luck to everyone, cause I just wanna see the thing finally!

This is a relatively unknown/completed event from what I understand. It fits with the catacombs/“final resting place” theme:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Flame_Temple_Tombs

Just a thought. The chest is individually named apparently.

I just went all the way through it, this ends in a grand chest which isn’t named.

I’ve done that nearly 200 times since betas and never seen it drop there. Every single time I go through the zone I do it. I’m not an accurate measure though, fairly certain I’m stuck in perma-DR. I get a good hour and a half-2 hours a day before DR hits me then it’s back to blues and whites until daily reset….

Jeff didn’t say the odds are .5% or 1/200. He said they were closer to that than 1/1,000,000.

Assuming that he is referring to level 80 players to get the best possible chest loot also, not underlevelled, and assuming the use of the word “might” indicates basically a coin-toss/50% chance in his above time frame and 10 players/1 attempt per day to avoid DR/213 days, 2130 attempts gives a 50% chance, so the odds would be 1/4260 for a level 80 player to obtain this item if his math is correct.

Zho Qafa is not as farmed as you think, except by those who think final rest drops by this event. Most people don’t even know how the whole spawn works and how long it takes to spawn, you’ll be surprised you can actually farm this event repeteadly with no timer (15 mins on a chopper is all you have to wait.) but no one does this or knows it.

Like I said I’m in a guild that’s farming the catacombs as much as possible in Fergs Crossing, so guest that server and see if you can find people doing the event. Send me a pm here if im not on in game for an invite to the guild. We need a larger sample size to determine if this is the place or not, besides you get a lot of exp and can usually complete most of your daily doing the event.

lol? it takes people less than half that time to make a legendary. this staff is not legendary and doesnt even have particle effects. what point is it to make it that low drop rate

Well but legendairies don’t drop out of chests, do they. Precursors do. And if they made one precursor only drop out of one single chest very rarely, then precursor droprates wouldn’t be balanced.
This is a named weapon. I’m pretty sure that the staff is lore related too. As you can see making it that rare as it is now, it made a hype around it (especially cause of the nice skin). Legendairies don’t have to be the only cool looking weapons. Though they do get their shiny effects and footprints and stuff.
So yeah, making it harder to obtain than a legendary is a good thing, and it is necessary for it to keep its mystery. It’s like a scavenger hunt.

you dont know what a scavenger hunt is. a scavenger hunt has clues, and isnt rng. you dont go to the location once you figure out where the next item is and have a .05 chance of it being there.

The shadow behemoth isn’t being farmed by level 80s though. I think this should stay on our list for now. It was broken for a while and when I go there, there isn’t a lot of lvl 80s around.

I will continue to do this on my 80 and see if I can get some more players there with me when it comes up.

uhhh it most definitely IS being farmed by 80s. On my home server, as well as the ones I guest on, it is being timer camped just like the dragons. I routinely see 30-50 players, the vast majority of which are 80s(can tell by just looking at how many are in CoF gear…).

I personally do not have a toon that could use this staff, nor did I even know it existed until I stumbled upon this thread. That being said, I think what is happening here is awesome! I have no problem with this item being so rare and hard to find, I actually wish there were more items like this in the game. It is sandboxy stuff like this that often will give players a reason to log in and work together, and it is just the coolest thing to watch or be a part of. Awesome job Anet, and way to go community! An event that happens every couple 2.5 hours doesn’t seem very rare.

Compare the drop rate to pre-cursors is pretty silly. You could potentially get one from killing the lv2 skale outside Divinity’s Reach. The chance of that is probably infinitesimally small but it is still greater than 0 whereas the chance of getting final rest from that is impossible. Then there the fact that you can also get pre-cursors through Mystic Forge.

Not to super analyze or anything, but this is my logic :

Quotes from Devs
(I highlighted the important parts)

“It’s a Unique spawn with its own event.”

“From following the big post on the subject, I’ve seen some posts that have correctly identified the specific event/boss, but as I said, I don’t believe that it has been completed enough times to expect it to have produced Final Rest. And it’s closer to .0005%”

Specifically, there’s an event that involves the killing of a boss. (No comment on level/type of the boss.) Succeeding at the event will spawn a chest, which has a miniscule chance of dropping Final Rest. Again, running the event once, twice, or even a hundred times means very little – from looking at the drop chance, you’d have to run the event thousands of times and hope that the RNG smiles upon you.”

It’s from the open world

Drops from a “Large” boss chest

So, I personally concluded that

  • 1. He says “he doesn’t think it’s been completed enough times” which tells me that it’s not a popular event, such as dragons or places where 80s like to roam around. Places like Shadow Behemoth (even though it’s only been working for 3 months) have had precursors drop already and 30+ people farm it everyday on cooldown all day. What are the chances then, since the 3 month passing point?
  • 2. It rules out Mini Dungeons because he says “An event that involves killing of a boss and spawning a chest after the event is over” – Mini Dungeons have visual chests spawned before the boss is killed (atleast in Flame Tombs and the chest spawned outside his door is a small chest) and are not considered true events. In addition, this rules out events with Splended Chests or Chests that are already spawned prior to completing the event.
  • 3. The event includes a “boss” so anything less than a Champion is probably not it. I’d say that it most likely comes from a Legendary Boss (purple ring) more-so than a Champion (yellow ring). Where do Champion’s stand in the “boss” department?
  • 4. He says that some people have guessed correctly. This could be super-analyzing, but some of the most popular and overly exhausted theories would be Shadow Behemoth and Catacombs. If I were him and it was either of those, I’d probably say “a lot of people have guessed correctly” or “quite a few people have guessed correctly”, not “some” ; I would think “some” would mean it’s not a super popular theory, but rather one that’s been thrown out here and there. A “medium” level of popularity between a once or twice mentioned theory and the oldest theory since launch.
  • 5. It comes from a Large chest (or Large Boss, depending on how you read it). Though, I personally think she meant a Large Chest just in size but not necessarily loot quality.
  • 6. The boss should be “unique” and have it’s own event leading up to that point. I don’t think killing a Champion Risen would count as a “unique spawn”. To me, a unique spawn would be a named boss (Champion or Legendary, I’m leaning towards Legendary) with it’s own event chain leading up to that boss.

Basically, that’s why I think it’s one of the events that I stated before. I honestly think it’s going to come from a Legendary Boss rather than a Champion. In addition, it’s probably one of the lesser of the overrated theories and the chest rewarded should be large in size and spawned after defeating the boss/event (or atleast gained access to after the battle is over).

I also don’t know if the Staff actually has anything to do with lore either, if it’s even intended to have anything to do with Gargoyles, Tombs, Ascalon or anything like that – If you look at other named weapons, some of them have nothing to do with their name or their appearance. Ruling out something because it isn’t undead, death, graves/tombs, necromancer-ish, ascalon background or anything along those lines feels like maybe this is another reason why no one has found it? -shrugs- Maybe it’s something less obvious.

/wall of text

TLDR ; Keep any open mind to the less “obvious” events that don’t necessarily tie to the lore of obvious Gargoyles, death and Ascalon. I think it comes from a Legendary Boss, not a Champion. Legendary bosses are considered unqiue, rare spawns.

It only spawns a small Splended chest that can only be opened once in awhile, which contradicts what a Dev previously said. I solo’d the event twice yesterday and it could only be opened once. It looks good on paper, but I don’t think this is it (personally).

It is super obscure though, but maybe too obscure. Haha, when I signed on and went to the area, I did find some people e-RPing. >.> Was interesting to say the least.

/EDIT
I attached a screenie of some of the text that I thought was interesting. It’d be a really good candidate if the chest wasn’t a small splended one.

Had nothing better to do while the servers were down so I went to take a look on the official wiki and at the lists of orr events with the skuls by them, meaning you have to beat champions.

Well, out of all the cursed shore listed less than half have descriptions.
Checking if some of these spawn chests might also be a good place to start since
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/NPC_rank says that “These creatures are very rare to see, they can only be found in dungeon instances or in Ruins of Orr group events and require an organized group and concerted effort to take down. They can be identified by a special purple starburst frame with two crossed swords around their target portrait.”

When I can finally log in I’ll go take a look and see if any of the ones with blank pages are up and get some info.

My money is on it being somewhere in Orr.

Here’s what I’m taking from Jeffrey’s comments today (btw thanks Jeff!):

He stated: “I’ve seen some posts that have correctly identified the specific event/boss”.

Keyword is “some”…note that he used it instead of “many”. (Refer to graph below)

I think we can safely remove the bigger guesses such as Zho’qafa Catacombs and Shadow Behemoth, and instead focus our attention on the less mentioned events such as Statue of Dwayna, the High Risen Wizard or Fire Elemental.

I’m going to go with the Risen Priest of Grenth. He’s the final open world event/boss in the game, and it seems to fit his loot table. It’s not an easy event and I’ve seen it fail many, many times (only completed it once myself).

If anyone wants to examine 14 pages of posts for “some” events…have at it!

Towards the start of the game grenth was defeated constantly on most servers, along with the High Risen Wizard. I’d say even with all the people farming Zho’qafa for the past couple months or so, it’s still been completed less times by less players than either of those two events.

I actually find the letter P offensive, so everyone with a P in their name must have it removed.

So folks – my two cents here:

1) 10 folks can run it – that wipes out a lot of the possibilities touted above – Zho’qaffa is definitely a 5-10 person (or more if there is interest) event.
2) Not many folks ran it until lately (lost in the boring swamp in <75 zone – no Ori – nothing else of real interest…) I never knew of it until a guildie pointed out the Final Rest thread on reddit…
3) It has a Glorious Chest
4) Have been running Zho’qaffa 3x a day (across a few servers) on various alts the last week – at least 15 times. The trash mob drops are great – Heavy Bags & in my experience at least one rare or better from the trash (including Rurik’s Boots one run).
5) Magmaton dropped for me today from the chest… IMHO the third best hammer in the game…
6) there is some debate on the math – be that as it may, given the large population in this game across numerous servers, a 1 in 2000 or even 1 in 200,000 drop rate wipes out many of the well known possibilities….

Takeaway – This Zho’qaffa chest has a fully loaded loot table, ain’t been run much & meets all the criteria hinted at by the devs… I for one will be showing up regularly & you can keep your Jormag blues for yourselves…

That isn’t correct (@ Legendary’s only being in Orr). The boss Taidha Convington in Bloodtide Coast is a Legendary.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Campaign_Against_Taidha_Covington

She’s one of the few Legendary’s that have a “chance” at triggering, making her unique/rare. In addition, the treasure chest is a large one.

But yeah, I think that’s what they meant when they said it was a “rare boss” or a “unique boss” was that it was a Legendary, not a Champion. Just a guess though.

I wonder if Taidha was mentioned in the thread where the devs say some people have been mentioning it.

Using the “search this thread” option at the top of the page, it appears that Taidha has been mentioned in only 12 posts. She is a definite candidate!

Yeah, add me to the list of people who think it is Taidha. First of all, it is a huge PITA to do, one person has to guard an NPC while a second large group has to kill a really tough champion boss. Doing all that gives you a CHANCE for the event to advance. There is no reason for level 80’s to even be in the zone and I have never once seen the event happen until yesterday.

I’ve been trying to do it off an on the past week or two and it keeps “bugging” out at the point where the Lionguard are supposed to attack(you go downstairs, kill the risen boss and all the mobs, but it doesn’t trigger anything afterwards).

I tried guesting on a few other servers and it was the same there(risen boss is killed, NPCs show up, stand around in the camp outside, then disappear and the risen boss in the bottom spawns again).

I’m in that area quite often, but I’ve honestly only seen that event properly working once, and that was RIGHT at the beginning of launch. Other than that, there has either not been enough people to even kill the risen boss or the event has been bugged.

If someone has a server with this working let me know and I’ll guest over there an try it out.

Where are all these Zho’Qafa farms occurring? Been on three servers today begging in map chat for help on this event. I am currently on the server where a guild claims to be farming it, and we can’t get ANYONE to help. It seems like this hardly ever gets done. So please inform me where these farms are taking place so that I might help.

My turret is so much better at this game than I am.

I am on SoR. The event worked for our guild yesterday but we had to do the first escort part of the quest 3-4 times before it would finally advance. Even with quite a few 80’s the events are not easy. We died several times on the first champ boss with a party of 4.

At the same time you are killing the risen boss, someone also needs to be outside on the other end of the island protecting Jenni so she doesn’t die. If you do both successfully, the event has a CHANCE to proceed to the Taidha event. You will likely have to do both those events several times before you are able to advance the chain.

That’s what makes this event so rare, it only has a random chance of triggering the meta event to kill Taidha Covington. You need to keep Lionguard Jenny alive, she’s the merchant at the Covington Keep near the skill point. If she’s not alive when you defeat the Champion, the meta event will NOT start no matter what. So, 1 person needs to guard Jenny while the other group of people kill the Champion. If you see Jenny, Bill and Hekja leave the island then you know the meta is starting.

Most people don’t know that though, you won’t be starting the meta event with out Jenny because Jenny leads you to the Taidha Covington event.

Sorry guys if i don’t answer pms in game but I’m at work right now, I usually do zho qafa at around 5:30pm eastern time, I’ll be on then doing the event chain, I have no problem with the event wether its just me or 10 people just show up and I guarantee we’ll get through it plus I will explain how the event chain works for those that would like to know. Fergs crossing is the server, send me a pm here for an inv to guild and we’ll be sure to do the event tonight a couple of times

Yeah I understand, well you know Fergs Crossing is the farming server for this event so if other people are on they would do it but I can’t be sure right now :p, I will do it later today for sure in an hour or so with whoever is on and people on that specific server.
